DENVER — Morgan Schilling is headed back to the No. 1 singles final at the Class 5A boys tennis state tournament.

Runner-up a year ago to two-time champion Christian Holmes of Chatfield, Schilling, a junior from Regis Jesuit, said he felt a difference between that tournament and this year’s event.

“I feel more experienced, more mature, more ready for the crowds and the cheering,” Schilling said. “I think last year, I came in with not really with great belief against Christian. I was always scared of him. He was always pretty intimidating. This year, I’m more confident.”

It showed. Schilling beat Greeley West freshman Nico Jamison 6-1, 6-0 in Friday morning’s semifinals to return to the championship match. It was a rematch of a match they played just a week earlier at regionals, which Schilling won 7-5, 6-2.

“This match, I was dictating way more,” Schilling said. “I was stepping in, and I didn’t miss as much as I did last week. So I just wanted to go into a mode where I was not missing. It was working.”

Schilling will face Fairview junior Luke Silverman in the championship match.

Silverman, who reached the quarterfinals last season, beat Cherry Creek junior George Cavo 6-1, 6-4 in his semifinal.

“I played really well in the first set, and then we both got a little bit tight in the second, but I still played really well,” Silverman said.

That match was also a rematch. Cavo had beat Silverman 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 in August.

But this time around, Silverman got a great start in the first help, and it helped to spark the win.

“Everything felt pretty good. I was returning well, volleying really well,” Silverman said.

Silverman and Schilling have already played this season, in the semifinals of the Cherry Creek Invite on Sept. 14. Schilling won that match, 6-0, 6-4.

“It’ll be a fun match,” His game is pretty solid. I’ve seen him play a bunch of times. I’ll have to do my best.

Both players said they’re looking forward to a great atmosphere on Center Court at Gates Tennis Center.

“It’s great, it’s different than pretty much everything else,” Silverman said. “You have the whole team cheering for you.”

Added Schilling: “It’s an amazing atmosphere on the Center Court with everyone watching and cheering, so I’m just excited.”

The bulk of the playback brackets were halted when a rainstorm strode through the Denver metro area, causing play to be delayed entirely by two hours.

When play did resume, it did so quickly. Playback results rapidly came in, and it impacted the team race, which will come down to the final day. Regis Jesuit and Cherry Creek were tied late into Friday’s action, and Regis Jesuit inched ahead late to hold a slim 67-64 lead.

Both teams have a number of matches yet to play, including four head-to-head matchups in championship finals. Each school is in five total championship matches on Saturday, and one third-place match.

All finals and third-place matches begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Gates Tennis Center.

  • No. 4 Chatfield football escapes with win over Golden

LAKEWOOD — Chatfield freshman Mason Lowe did enough late Friday afternoon to hopefully get himself on the Chargers’ varsity football roster next week.

“He (Lowe) is a special kid,” Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin said. “We have been waiting with him and letting him play freshman games. You’ll see him a lot.”

Lowe’s #16 jersey was nowhere to be found on the roster, but he found himself in the end zone early in the fourth quarter on a 58-yard halfback touchdown pass from senior Daniel Nickels to give Chatfield a 14-3 lead over Golden.

“He (Lowe) has been practice with varsity the last couple of weeks,” said Nickels, who added he had full confidence throwing the pass to a freshman who was playing in just is second varsity game. “He has proved himself.”

Chatfield — No. 4 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A rankings — went on to win 21-3 against the gritty Golden squad that came in on a five-game winning streak. Golden got a late touchdown run by senior Nate Freeman to clinch the win.

“I told our kids that we are a good team and they are a good team,” Golden coach Jared Yannacito said. “It was going to come down to execution and little things. (Chatfield) executed and did the little things a little bit better.”

Golden (5-2, 1-1 in 4A Jeffco League) put the first points on the board with a 14-play drive in the first quarter that chewed up nearly eight minutes off the clock. Senior Matt Elliott eventually kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:22 left in the first quarter to give the Demons a 3-0 lead.

The drive featured a holding call on Chatfield on fourth-down that kept the drive alive for the Demons. Golden also converted another fourth-down with a run by quarterback Joey Mancuso.

“We had a few penalties early on, but our pursuit to the ball and positive attitude after a bad play is key,” Chatfield senior linebacker Colin Simcox said. “We’re a good group together.”

The Chargers’ defense didn’t allow the Demons to score for the rest of the game. Golden turned the ball over on downs three times, missed a 50-yard field and a hit from Chatfield senior Jorge Auran created a fumble that Simcox recovered in the final minutes to wrap up the win.

“We’ve told the defense that we’ll be leaning on your guys all year,” McGatlin said. “I’m proud of them.”

Chatfield (6-1, 2-0) took the lead late in the first quarter on a long drive of its own. The Chargers drove 73 yards for the first touchdown of the game. The 15-play scoring drive featured a fake punt where sophomore Jacob Marschall run 13 yards up the middle for the on a fourth-and-3 play.

Marschall was the leading rusher for the Chargers with senior Malcolm Boyd out with an injury. Senior quarterback Jake Wells finished off the scoring drive with a 9-yard touchdown run with just over a minute before halftime.

“Injuries always hurt, but those guys came out and showed they are worth varsity minutes,” Nickels said of the young players stepping up for the Chargers.

Chatfield turns its attention to a huge conference showdown against rival Dakota Ridge (6-1, 2-0). The Chargers versus Eagles showdown is 6 pm Thursday, Oct. 24, at Jeffco Stadium next week. The winner will be the lone undefeated team in 4A Jeffco League play and firmly in the driver’s seat to win the conference title.

“We need to have a good week of practice. No messing around,” Simcox said. “It’s our Dakota Week. We have to win it because whoever wins that game will likely be league champs.”

Dakota Ridge just escaped Stocker Stadium on the Western Slope with a victory Thursday night. The Eagles edged Grand Junction 13-12.

“It’s a rivalry game and will be a packed house for sure. Those are the kind of games you look forward to,” McGatlin said. “I respect Coach (Ron) Woitalewicz a ton and that program.”

McGatlin also gave a lot of credit to Yannacito for turning the Demons’ football program around since the Pomona graduate and former Panthers’ assistant coach took over Golden’s football program.

“Coach Yannacito is a great coach. He has done some amazing things,” McGatlin said. “Three years ago before Jared came over when we played them it 50-0 at halftime. Now they play hard and compete.”

Golden faces rival Wheat Ridge next Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. The game will be critical for the Demons and Farmers when it comes to RPI points and aspirations to make the 16-team 4A state tournament field.

“I’m extremely proud of my team and my boys when it comes to home much tougher and stronger they are getting,” Yannacito said. “To be in a game like this… I’m excited about where they are going.”

    2A: (2) Sterling 24, (3) Platte Valley 6

Sterling jumped out with two quick touchdowns, including a fumble return for a score, in the first quarter, and turned that momentum into a huge win.

“We knew coming in all week who the opponent was and what was at stake tonight,” Sterling coach Rob Busmente told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Our kids did a great job during the week of preping during practice.”

Busmente added that the game was “from start to finish, probably one of our most complete games that we’ve played this season.”

Of the two early touchdowns he said: “Jumping out fast and creating some momentum early was a positive, and we were able to maintain that level through the rest of the game.”

Sterling is now 6-1, with the lone loss coming out-of-state to Scottsbluff, Neb. The Tigers are in first place in the Patriot East at 3-0.

    6-man: (2) Fleming 63, (9) Briggsdale 14

Fleming locked up the North League championship with the big win.

“Especially the second half, we just started executing well,” Fleming coach John King told the Scoreboard Show. “Sticking with our blocks longer, and people on the back side, really trying to work hard and take their angles. It just kinda started clicking.

“We kind of wore them down a little bit,” King added. “We have really good depth this year for 6-man.”

Fleming is now 8-0 overall, and 5-0 in the North.

  • No. 4 Ralston Valley football knocks off No. 1 Columbine in 5A thriller

LAKEWOOD — Ralston Valley versus Columbine lived up to all the hype Friday night at Jeffco Stadium.

A 60-yard touchdown pass from Ralston Valley senior quarterback Walker Brickle to senior JJ Galbreath with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter pulled the No. 4-ranked Mustangs to within 23-22 against No. 1 Columbine.

“JJ ran a great route and the line gave me enough time to throw it,” Brickle said of the touchdown pass. “We delivered. It was a big play.”

Ralston Valley went for the game-winning 2-point conversion. Senior Chase Wilson just crossed the goal-line to give the Mustangs the 24-23 upset victory.

“I was pumped. Coach (Matt Loyd) wouldn’t have made that call if he didn’t know we could get it,” Wilson said about going for the 2-point conversion. “I got some good blocks from my fullbacks and just put my head down to get across the plane.”

Brickle’s second touchdown pass of the night to Galbreath is one that is going to be remembered for a long time. It’s a play that Columbine senior Tanner Hollens knew was coming sooner or later.

“He (Galbreath) did a double-move. They had been setting it up all game,” Hollens said of what he saw on the final touchdown from his defensive back position. “They were going hitch, hitch, hitch and then they hit us with the double-move … touchdown.”

Columbine (7-1, 2-1 in Class 5A Metro West) had good field position with just over a minute to play, but turned the ball over on downs. Brickle took a couple of knees before the Mustangs (8-0, 3-0) could officially celebrate Ralston Valley’s first victory over Columbine since 2014.

“I’m just happy for these kids. The senior class had never beaten Columbine,” Loyd said. “That’s what I’m happy for. I’m just glad our senior class can say they beat them once.”

Loyd gambled a few times in the victory. The biggest was going for it on fourth-down from the Rebels’ 8-yard-line in the third quarter. The gamble paid off with Brickle escaping Columbine’s rush and scrambling in for an 8-yard touchdown run to put Ralston Valley up 16-13 midway through the third quarter.

“In a game like this you have to gamble and take sacrifices,” said Galbreath, who had a 5-yard touchdown catch in the first half. “Tonight, Coach did it and he had faith in us.”

An interception by Columbine senior DJ Davis of Brickle early in the fourth quarter allowed the Rebels to score a go-head touchdown. Hollens scored his second touchdown of the game on an 8-yard run with 6:11 left in the game.

Columbine tacked on a third field goal of the night by junior Adam Tasei with 2:56 left, but it was plenty of time for Brickle to work his magic.

“He (Brickle) is very, very tough. He is very competitive and he knew he was going to have to hang in there,” said Loyd, of facing the great pass rush of the Rebels led by senior Justin Lohrenz, who sacked Brickle twice. “He did so and made some plays to allow us to win the game.”

Ralston Valley heads back to its home field at the North Area Athletic Complex next Thursday for a 4 p.m. game against Lakewood. The Mustangs know Friday night’s win over Columbine was big, but they still have a long road ahead.

“We just have to go to practice next week and stay focused,” Brickle said. “We still have two (league games) ahead and a lot more to go. We have to stay focused and have good positive energy.”

Columbine has another huge test against No. 8 Pomona (5-3, 2-0).

“I believe this will be good for us,” Hollens said of the loss. “We can just get better week-by-week now. We know the potential we have and where we need to improve. It’s going to be another dogfight against Pomona.”

  • No. 10 The Classical Academy football stuns No. 8 Elizabeth in final seconds

    (Derek Lee/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — For the briefest of moments, it looked like senior night for Hayden Cooper was going to end on a missed field goal. But as the ball sailed wide of the goal post, The Classical Academy realized it had been saved by a whistle.

    Elizabeth had called a timeout.

With two-tenths of a second on the clock, his second attempt was good giving Class 2A No. 10 TCA a thrilling 10-9 over No. 8 Elizabeth.

“I was thankful I got that extra kick in,” said Cooper. “I was so dialed in and ready, I just wanted to make that so bad.”

Cooper said that one of the Elizabeth players was screaming Cooper’s number leading up to the kick.

“That boosted me,” said Cooper. “That made me want to make it even more. So many things were going through my head but when that snap went off, everything was dialed in. It was great.”

Prior to Cooper’s made field goal, Elizabeth (5-2 overall, 2-1 2A Tri-Peaks) had been called for a penalty, which moved the ball up to the 26-yard line. Penalties played a large role as both teams accrued more than 50 yards each due to penalties.

“I don’t know what happened today,” said Titans head coach Justin Rich. “I don’t know if we were sloppy or weren’t clean. We probably were but we can’t have penalties like that and win so we’re lucky to get out of this one, but I can’t explain the flags.”

Coming into tonight’s game, Cardinals senior quarterback Vincent Weber had 546 passing yards and 250 rushing yards. The Titans’ defense was able to keep Weber quiet, with Elizabeth’s only touchdown coming on blown coverage.

“We just wanted to stay in coverage,” said Rich. “(We wanted to) be really strong on the edge and try to get (Weber) to pitch or string it out and I think we did that all night too. He’s good, I think defensively we executed everything that we wanted to execute, and we gave them a field goal and had a busted coverage.”

That led to Elizabeth taking a late 9-7 lead even with a defensive effort that the Titans (5-2, 3-0) were generally pleased with.

“Our defense altogether, we played great,” said Cooper, who had an interception just before halftime. “I wish we could have kept the penalties to a minimum, that really hurt us a lot. But overall we did great just pinning them in and keeping them from getting big yards.”

Rich praised his team’s resilience, saying that they could have given up toward the end of the game.

“We gave up a score late, they could have given up there,” he said. “We were 4th and long, they could have given up, then we got a 1st down. This group has shown all season that they believe and they’re going to try to find a way to win and they got it done. I couldn’t be prouder.”

The win puts TCA in control of the Tri-Peaks league ahead of next week’s road game against defending 2A champion La Junta.
