DENVER — Up into the night sky went the trophy, hoisted there by dozens of hands.

Colorado Academy, once more, is the best field hockey team in the state of Colorado.

The top-seeded Mustangs put the finishing touches on a perfect season Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over defending champion Regis Jesuit in the state field hockey championship game.

“It’s kind of a bit surreal, to be honest,” said Colorado Academy coach Veronica Scott, now in her sixth year.

Colorado Academy ends the season at 18-0-0, becoming the first champion with an unblemished record since the Mustangs did it in 2014.

“These seniors — when these seniors were my freshmen, they were the ones who they were hockey players. They wanted to be hockey players,” Scott said. “And that was a difference. Normally we’ve got the lax players or the soccer players who want to mix in, but these kids were going to win the state championship. They’ve prepared, and they’ve done it. And I couldn’t be prouder.”

It is the program’s first title since 2015, which was the last of four-consecutive championships, and sixth overall. Only Kent Denver, with 10, has won more.

Julia Hall, a junior, opened the scoring in the waning minutes of the first half following a penalty corner. Camielle Doherty had an assist. The goal came with just under three minutes remaining.

“That was so important,” said junior Katharine Merrifield, a captain for Colorado Academy. “It was definitely a momentum-builder.”

Then, in the second half, Merrifield, the state’s leading scorer, made it 2-0. It was her 25th goal this season — the highest total in at least a decade.

After Merrifield’s goal, Regis Jesuit turned up the pressure and won a number of penalty corners. But Rebecca Kerr, the Mustangs’ goalie, made a number of key saves to keep the Raiders scoreless midway through the second half.

Kerr and Madeline Gordon have shared goalie duties for Colorado Academy this season, with Gordon starting the first half, and Kerr starting the second.

“They’re such a great combination, and we had no reason to separate them,” Scott said. “And it worked.”

Regis Jesuit made it a one-goal game when Caitrin Lombardo poked home a loose ball in front of the goal with eight minutes to play.

The Raiders (14-2-2) looked to have a great chance to tie the game with 4:27 remaining, but a Colorado Academy defender was able to clear the ball in front of an open net. The Mustangs’ defense held firm as the clocked ticked down the remaining time, setting off a celebration.

The semifinals and championship game were pushed back a week by a massive snowstorm. Ultimately, the two rounds were played on back-to-back nights.

“Credit to the girls: It just didn’t phase them,” Scott said. “They just said, Alright, the business is the business, and we’ll carry on how we have to carry on: rain, hail or snow. They took it all in stride.”

  • No. 2 Golden boys soccer nets state quarterfinal berth

ARVADA — Golden looked very much like a No. 2 seed in the Class 4A boys soccer tournament Tuesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

The back-to-back 4A Jeffco League champs cruised past No. 15 Niwot to the tune of a 3-0 victory. The win advances Golden into the state quarterfinals Saturday where the Demons host No. 26 Centaurus back at NAAC.

“We got really fortunate with our seeding to give us some home games,” Golden junior Daniel Erger said after the Demons’ third straight shutout victory. “Obviously I love this pitch. I love to be at home. We feel good here.”

Centaurus scored its second straight postseason road victory Tuesday night. Centaurus edged No. 10 Discovery Canyon 2-1.

“There is a pedigree there. A few years ago they played in the state championship game,” Golden coach Larry Harding said referring to the Warriors losing to Air Academy in the 4A title game back in 2017. “We are just going to have to go back to the pitch and tighten up some things to get the boys ready for Saturday.”

Centaurus opened the postseason upsetting No. 7 Holy Family 5-0 last week before defeating another top-10 seed Tuesday night.

“Once the postseason hits seedings don’t matter,” Golden senior Sam Markovich said.

The Demons were definitely ready to play in the opening dozen minutes against Niwot. Golden finished off a pair of scoring chances in the 10th and 12th minutes to grab an early lead.

Golden senior Christian Sekavec ripped home the first goal with a low shot that zipped past Niwot freshman goalie Javier Amaya in the 10th minute.

A direct free kick led to another Demon goal two minutes later.

Erger was fouled outside the goal box by Niwot senior Andre Worrell in the 12th minute. Senior Ian Persky took the free kick that was tipped by senior Josh Colin and then Erger was able to get a foot on the ball to flick it over the head of Amaya for an early 2-0 lead.

“Before the game I was talking about playing it one the ground and playing it low so I could get a touch on it,” Erger said. “There was a nice little flick by Josh (Colin) as well. It worked out in our favor.”

Golden (15-1-1 record) extended its lead to 3-0 in the 26th minute. Niwot was called for a handball in the goal box off a free kick from Persky. Golden senior Joaquin Garfias slammed home the penalty kick to give the Demons a commanding 3-goal lead.

Niwot had a flurry of scoring chances with about five minutes to play in the first half, but Golden senior goalie DJ Koury was up to the challenge. The Cougars (11-6) couldn’t trim into the Demons’ lead at halftime.

“We’ve been a strong defensive team all year, but we haven’t played to many complete games,” Markovich said after the Demons’ sixth shutout win of the season. “It was nice to get a clean sheet (shutout) like this. We come out with the mindset that we aren’t scared of anybody. We do whatever it takes to keep the ball out of the net.”

Tuesday’s win was a far cry from Golden’s first-round win Saturday where the Demons squeaked out a 1-0 victory against No. 31 Denver West.

“They came out tonight more focused. Especially in the first half,” Harding said. “I’m enjoying this.”

Golden is the lone 4A Jeffco League team to advance to the state quarterfinals. Standley Lake suffered a 2-0 loss to Silver Creek on Tuesday night.

“At this point it’s all about motivation and how badly you want it,” Harding said. “The hard work is paying off. They have worked really hard.”

  • No. 26 Centaurus boys soccer pulls off another upset in the 4A tourney

COLORADO SPRINGS — A winning goal can come can at any time during a soccer game, whether it’s the first or last minute of the game.

For the No. 26-seeded Centaurus Warriors, it came in the last thirty seconds of their Class 4A boys soccer second round game.

Senior Christian Nunez led Centaurus past No. 10 Discovery Canyon with goals in the 53rd and 80th minutes. The setup for both goals were extremely similar as Nunez dribbled past multiple defenders before launching a bullet past the goalkeeper. The Warriors won, 2-1.

“Since the beginning, we knew it was going to be a tough game and we just put everything out there,” said Nunez.

After Nunez gave Centaurus the lead, Discovery Canyon answered back in the 74th minute, off of a header from junior Hunter Lindell.

Minutes later, Nunez stunned the crowd with his second of the night.

“We scored a goal and we got motivated, and we let them have one,” said Nunez. “We kept our heads up and kept going for it and we had one at the end.”

“He is a special talent,” said Warriors head coach Lee Stanley. “He has ball skills (and) vision that you don’t really see much in high school kids. He has vision beyond his years (and) he can hold onto the ball under pressure from several players.

“He is absolutely a special talent and we haven’t seen a player like him in years.”

Centaurus dominated possession early for most of the first half but failed to get on the scoresheet.

Centaurus goalkeeper Parker Sanchez and Discovery Canyon goalkeeper Seth Lawrence matched each other save for save as Sanchez had a spectacular sprawling save off a Thunder free kick while Lawrence had a great save on a 1-on-1 chance minutes later.

“I think we actually possessed better in the first half,” said Stanley. “We changed and became a little bit more direct during the second half instead of working the ball as much through the midfield. We tried to back off the defenders by being a little more direct.”

Discovery Canyon had a chance to take the lead in the 67th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick, but the shot went off the crossbar before going out of bounds.

“We scored with thirty seconds left on the clock and Discovery Canyon had a goal scored five minutes before that,” said Stanley. “If we put our heads down and feel sorry for ourselves from that goal, it could have gone the other way but (we fought) hard until the end and (got) it with thirty seconds left.”

“(We) didn’t want to go to overtime,” said Nunez. “We’ve been in overtime in other situations (and) hasn’t gone right. (We) had to end it whenever we had the chance to and that’s what we did.”

  • No. 8 Lewis-Palmer tops No. 9 Pueblo Centennial to advance to 4A boys soccer quarterfinals

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

MONUMENT — Prior to 2019, Lewis-Palmer boys soccer coach Brian Barkey had only seen his team advance past the first round of the Class 4A boys soccer tournament once.

With a win in over Mesa Ridge last week, Barkey happy to see the Rangers’ second trip into the second round under his watch. Tuesday against Pueblo Centennial, he was looking for a first-time achievement.

His boys delivered with a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs. Their reward is a trip to the mountains on Saturday to face No. 1 Battle Mountain to face No. 1 Battle Mountain.

“We challenged them in April,” Barkey said. “We asked them what they wanted to talk about in 10 years about this team. And they said that they wanted to make history.”

But in order to make history, they had to follow through with that goal on the field. Centennial had been ranked as the No. 1 team in the 4A CHSAANow.com coaches poll at one point, meaning that even as the No. 9 seed, it was common knowledge that the team was capable of coming away with a win.

That’s why it was so important for the Rangers (14-3) to strike first. An L-P corner kick in the 21st minute yielded no result, but it was the Bulldogs (12-5) who knocked the ball out past the goal line, giving the Rangers another shot.

And they saw something. The second chance ricocheted off the post and several feet before it shot past Centennial keeper Jesse Chavez and into the net. It was Tanner Kilgore taking the bow when all was said and done.

“we hit it high (on the first one) and the keeper kept punching it,” Kilgore said. “So we line drived it lower and then it hit the post and then (we) hit it.”

On the opposite end of the field, it was a welcome sight to see for keeper Aidan McGonagle. But he didn’t have a lot of time to enjoy it. The Bulldogs pressed offensively and tried to create their own scoring opportunities.

A free kick from about 35 yards out didn’t amount to anything, but a shot shortly after forced McGonagle to dive to his left side, fearful that the shot was good.

It sailed wide right, but it was an indication that Centennial was going to stay aggressive in the offensive end.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

But the defenders held their ground and each time the Bulldogs looked to be on the verge of firing off a shot, the Rangers knocked it away or deflected it from its intended target.

“Our back line is a straight brotherhood,” McGonagle “We don’t fall apart. We always come together to secure a win. Even when our offense isn’t coming into play, we always know we have each other’s backs.”

He quickly noted that after the first goal, he knew the Rangers all but had the game in the bag.

“All we need is one goal,” he said. “One goal secures a win.”

He believes that can be the case on Saturday as well. Battle Mountain beat Montrose 1-0 earlier in the day so any hope of getting to semifinals at Legacy Stadium in Aurora means a successful trip to Vail has to come first.

But if there is one thing that the Rangers are not, it’s afraid of the number one that precedes the Huskies on the bracket.

“I know them very well and it’s not a problem,” Barkey said. “We’re confident.”

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann is among eight inductees to the Colorado Dugout Club Coaches Hall of Fame class of 2020, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The Colorado Dugout Club is baseball’s coaches association, and annually inducts new members into the Hall of Fame. The ceremony for the 2020 class is Jan. 17, 2020 at the Marriott Tech Center.

In a statement announcing the class, the Dugout Club wrote:

Along the way, many of these nominees again crossed paths with previous classes inductees, and intertwined with a single purpose — to add their special touch to unify players, coaches and schools. And they did that with an uncanny ability and grace that has helped develop the highest standard for others to follow.

These men, as did the previous year’s groups and the inaugural class, have achieved above the norm. Their contributions and influence created legacies along the way that impacted those throughout the state, region, nation and internationally. Their involvement within and outside their respective communities have led others to refer to them as “Baseball Guys” and “Mr. Baseball.”

The list of 2020 inductees includes:

    • CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann
    • Long time former head baseball coach at Colorado University Frank “Chief” Prentup
    • Former head coach at Mullen HS and Metro State University Vince Porreco
    • Long time baseball coach at Colorado School of Mines Jim Darden

The Mustangs put an end to a scoreless affair midway through the first half, and then held off all kinds of scoring chances from Kent Denver to advance.

Kent Denver had most of the pressure early in the first half, with a number of penalty corners and shots on goal, but it was Colorado Academy which struck first.

When the Mustangs finally got some sustained pressure on Kent Denver’s side of the field, it led to two penalty corners. On the second, Anderson Dodge, a senior, scored from the left side after her shot deflected off a defender and found the top right corner.

That goal came with 12:21 to play in the half.

Things stayed that way through halftime, and into the second half. Once again, Kent Denver continued to put pressure in the offensive zone, and had a number of corners, but nothing found the goal.

The Sun Devils had a great chance with 15:21 to play, off another penalty corner, but Colorado Academy goalie Madeline Gordon make a good save to preserve the shutout.

With about nine minutes to play, Kent Denver’s Camille Marsh made a great individual run and had a chance in close with a defender closely trailing her, only to watch her shot just missed to the left.

Kent had another great chance with 6:48 to go, when a loose ball following a corner squirted free to the left of the goal. But a shot attempt was just wide.

Ultimately, Colorado Academy was able to hold on and advance.

It is Colorado Academy’s first appearance in a title game since 2015, which was the last of the program’s four-consecutive state championships. The Mustangs will be making their 12th championship game appearance.

Regis Jesuit’s Zoey Dale scored on a give-and-go just 1:16 into the second overtime to lift the Raiders to a second-straight appearance in the title game.

The tightly-contested game, which was a rematch of last year’s state title contest, saw a couple of good chances by both teams during regulation.

Cherry Creek had a chance in close less than four minutes into the game following a penalty corner, but just missed on a shot towards an open goal. Another chance off a corner from the Bruins with six minutes remaining in the half hit the right post.

The most prominent scoring chance came with 10.7 seconds remaining in the half, when Regis Jesuit’s Zoey Dale appeared to have scored, but the goal was disallowed because the ball did not come out of the circle prior to the shot on a penalty corner.

Then, with 9:32 remaining in the second half, Regis Jesuit’s Cate Lord broke in alone on the goal, but Cherry Creek’s Tallulah Fuhs sprinted third yards to catch up with her and push the ball away at the last moment before a shot attempt.

The teams — who played on Sept. 18, a 2-0 Regis win — went to overtime. Neither team had a particularly great opportunity to score in that period, so they went to a second OT.

In that overtime, Dale took the inbounds pass on a penalty corner, passed to a teammate, who immediately returned the ball, and Dale buried the shot in the lower right corner.

Regis Jesuit, the defending champion, will now continue its quest to defend its title on Tuesday night.
