All-state football teams for the 2019 season
The 2019 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

Pomona boys hoops wins opener at 12th annual Ralston Roundup
ARVADA — Colorado Mesa University might end up getting the steal of the early basketball signing period.
Pomona senior Trevor Baskin has already signed on the dotted line with the Mavericks to play basketball in Grand Junction next season. The 6-foot-8 forward has certainly been impressive on the court through the Panthers’ first five games.
Baskin is averaging 29.4 points per game and more than a dozen rebounds, not to mention almost a half-dozen blocks per contest.

Pomona senior Trevor Baskin (22) goes up for a dunk during the first half Tuesday against Prairie View. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “I just want to help the team in any way as possible,” Baskin said after he scored 36 points in just over three quarters of action Tuesday in the opening round of the Ralston Roundup Tournament. “If that means rebounding 40 times and passing it. I just need to contribute as many ways as possible.”
Pomona (3-2 record) cruised to a 70-41 victory over Prairie View to open up the 12th annual tournament put on by Ralston Valley High School. The Panthers will face the winner of Legacy/Rampart in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, back at Ralston Valley High School.
“We aren’t playing as clean as I would like, but I’m certainly not going to give a win back,” said Pomona coach Jon Baskin, father of Trevor Baskin. “I think down the road we’ll be OK. We are still trying to find ourselves and figure things out.”
One thing is clear, Baskin will be the focal point for Pomona. After averaging a double-double last season in points and rebounds the sky is the limit. The senior dominated the Thunderhawks scoring 31 points through the first three quarters.
“I’m not trying to pull him back on anything. He takes what the defense give him,” Coach Baskin said of his son. “We just let him go play and he’ll do what he can to help us win. I’ve been really pleased with him so far.”

Pomona sophomore Jer’rick Jackson, left, gets a shot up over Prairie View freshman Rashawn Salinas-Johnson during the opening game of the Ralston Roundup on Tuesday. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Sophomore Jer’rick Jackson added 9 points and senior Dylan Espinosa had 7 points to help the cause for the Panthers.
“We are long and athletic, but we are also inexperienced,” Coach Baskin admitted. “We’ve got some football guys out with some injuries that will make us better.”
Senior Isiah Tshimanga is currently out with an injury. He averaged a dozen points per game last season.
“We are missing our best athlete (Tshimanga), but once we get him back we’ll be out running at lot,” Baskin said. “We’ll use our athleticism and speed. We like to use that to our advantage.”
Baskin will have some fun one-on-one battles once Class 5A Jeffco League play rolls around. Columbine senior Luke O’Brien, who has signed with the University of Colorado, will be a great test for Baskin.
“Playing Columbine and Luke is going to be a big one,” Baskin said looking ahead. “I’ve played against him since I was 9 or 10. We have always had that rivalry, but we are friends off the court.”
Coach Baskin said he likes Pomona’s chances once conference play begins after Winter Break.
“If we can get hot at the right time we could make some noise, but that is a long ways down the road. A lot more gray hairs and late nights,” Coach Baskin said. “I’m staying cautiously optimistic until we got all our guys available and see where it goes from there.”

Prairie View sophomore Dominic Marrujo (13) attempts to steal the ball from Pomona senior Trevor Baskin on Tuesday at Ralston Valley High School. Marrujo scored a team-high 18 points for the Thunderhawks, but Baskin answered with 36 points to lead the Panthers to victory. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) -
Ralston Valley boys basketball shows depth in win over Standley Lake
ARVADA — On the eve of Caleb Rillos signing his National Letter of Intent to play football at the United States Air Force Academy, the Ralston Valley senior did a little work on the basketball court.
Rillos — 6-foot-5 wide receiver that led the Mustangs with 57 catches for 766 yards and 12 touchdowns on the football field this past Fall — continued his domination over to the hardwood. The senior had 10 points in limited minutes as Ralston Valley easily handed Standley Lake a 78-27 defeat in the opening round of the Ralston Roundup Tournament that the Mustangs host.

Ralston Valley senior Caleb Rillos (21) elevates over Standley Lake junior Declan Adams (30) and senior Matthew Tuholski (5) for an eventual dunk on the opening night of the 12th annual Ralston Roundup Tournament on Tuesday night. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “He (Rillos) is always in the right position on offense to help us out,” said Ralston Valley senior Caden Gigstad, who led the Mustangs with 18 points. “His offensive rebounding is a huge aspect that always helps out.”
An unfortunate injury limited Rillos late in the season last winter. He suffered a broken wrist when he hit the floor after a dunk. The injury forced Rillos — three-sport athlete — to miss the entire boys lacrosse in the spring for the Mustangs.
“I just don’t hang (on the rim) anymore,” Rillos said of not being shy to use his leaping ability, but changing his dunking technique. “Last year I had five dunks on the season. Right now I already have 13 in six games.”
Ralston Valley (5-1 record) was firing on all cylinders against Standley Lake (2-3). The Mustangs led 45-8 at halftime. The Gators were held to single-digits points in each quarter except Standley Lake’s 10-point third quarter.
Standley Lake sophomore Eldar Djedovic led the Gators with 10 points.
“We pride ourselves on our defense,” Gigstad said. “We take our defense personally. We just fly around on defense.”

Ralston Valley sophomore Beau Wilson (4) drives on Standley Lake sophomore Larry Tygart (21) during the first half Tuesday night at Ralston Valley High School. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Offensively, Gigstad and Rillos was the only Mustangs to reach double-digit points. However, it looked like a summer league game at times with Ralston Valley coach Chris Braketa swapping out five players at a time about every four minutes through the final three quarters.
Ten different Mustangs scored and six players finished with 8 points or more.
“We’ve definitely have more depth then we had in the past. Guys come off the bench and intermix really well. We are still trying to figure out a lot of that,” Braketa said of working with such a deep bench and figuring out rotations. “We haven’t had a lot of practices all together with football. It’s still going to take some time. We’ll figure it out.”
Ralston Valley finished 17-7 last season and in a three-way tie for third-place in the Class 5A Jeffco League with a 6-2 conference mark . The Mustangs nearly have everyone returning from last year’s squad.
“Losing only one player (Jordan Stratch) from last year we pretty much have everyone coming back,” Gigstad said. “There is a family aspect we’ve already built and we’ve got younger players who are able to step in and play. The family aspect is what we are built on.”
Ralston Valley returns to its home court Thursday to face Mountain Range (5-2) in the semifinals of the Ralston Roundup. That tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
While conference play is more than a month away, Braketa is excited thinking about the competition ahead in what appears to be an improved 5A Jeffco conference this season.
“I believe Jeffco is deep than its been in the past. As soon as we get into league it’s going to be a battle,” Braketa said. “There are four of five teams that can come out and win league.”

Grand Junction Central’s Kole Taylor found a path to sign with LSU football

(Photo courtesy of Central High School) Kole Taylor can’t help but smile when he sees what’s happening in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. First, the LSU Tigers were named the No. 1 team in the final College Football Playoff rankings.
Then, quarterback Joe Burrow claimed the 2019 Heisman Trophy, a feat once unfathomable for a program known more for a hard-nosed running attack.
After putting ink to paper on Wednesday, Taylor officially becomes a part of all that as he will indeed head south to join the LSU football program and try to keep it as the powerhouse that it became this year.
“They had really recruited blocking tight ends since their scheme was ground-heavy,” Taylor said. “This year, they got a new passing game coordinator and he opened up that offense a lot. What they saw in me was that I’m a passing-catching tight end.”
To find Taylor, LSU had to navigate over Vail Pass and through Glenwood Canyon to get to the western edge of the state. He’s another shining example that teams in search of talent can find it regardless of the hills they have to climb or the windy roads they have to navigate.
“If you have that talent you will be found,” Taylor said. “But you also have to put yourself out there.”
That’s not always the easiest thing to do when living in Grand Junction. But Taylor found a way because playing for a team like LSU is not something even the top Colorado recruits always get the chance to do.
“I worked up at Six-Zero with Matt McChesney,” he said. “He has a lot of connections and he was able to communicate to these coaches.”
That work in Denver paid off last February when the Tigers first reached out to Taylor. At first, they wanted to read his interest in them and also make sure he was the kind of athlete and kid that they could bring into their program.
It started out with just a few text messages and it wasn’t long after the initial conversations started that an offer was thrown out there.
“Feb. 25th they offered me,” Taylor said. “We had started communicating about a week before.”
Taylor took a trip down to Baton Rouge for the LSU spring game. The only other spring game he attended was at the University of Colorado.
But LSU had his attention from the very start.
“Some of their legends were there,” Taylor said. “Tyrann Mathieu was there, Leonard Fournette was there and it was great that those alumni care to come back.”
His official visit came at the beginning of the summer. That visit amplified his desire to be a part of something that he truly believed is special.
With his signing becoming official on Wednesday, he’s set to take the next step in football career. And while he wants to enjoy the day, he knows the work is far from over. In fact, it’s only just begun.
“I’m really excited to do this and get things rolling,” Taylor said. “I figure it will hit me once I’m there in Baton Rouge. The first week is going to be crazy. It’ll be a big transition.”
But it’s a transition that a pass-catching tight end from Grand Junction is looking forward to making.
