  • Bear Creek boys hoops rally to hand Hinkley its first loss

LAKEWOOD — Luis Miera has come home.

After three years at Alameda International and helping the Pirates to 18-7 record last year averaging 15.3 points per game, Miera transferred to Bear Creek High School to finish out his prep career.

“He was a Bear Creek kid from the beginning,” Bear Creek’s boys basketball coach Will Gosch said about the transfer from Alameda. “He had to go live with another family member for awhile. The family in the Bear Creek community really turned it around and he had the opportunity to come back here to finish out his senior year at Bear Creek.”

Miera is the Bears’ leading scorer so far this season averaging 19.6 points per game. He poured in 15 points, including three 3-pointers Friday night as Bear Creek rallied from a double-digit deficit against Hinkley in the semifinals of the Bear Creek Invitational.

“I knew I was going to be a spark right away with this team,” Miera said. “I just try to get my guys going and pushing it.”

Miera and junior Liam Franks (16 points) pushed the Bears to a 61-50 victory over the previously undefeated Hinkley (4-1 record). The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 14-2 lead midway through the first quarter.

Bear Creek’s first field goal didn’t drop until Franks hit a 3-pointer with 2:50 left in the first quarter. Gosch said he felt the reason for the slow start against Hinkley was due to his team’s warm-ups being flat.

“We are a young team with not a lot of varsity experience,” Gosch said. “We are really trying to take it one game and one day at a time. It took awhile to wake-up tonight.”

Bear Creek tightened up defensively and made a living at the free-throw line in the second half. Hinkley top two scorers — Jeremiah Taylor (18 points) and Jeremiah Warren (16 points) — both fouled out in the final minutes.

“This is a big win,” Miera said. “We dropped a game in Grand Junction last week that we knew we shouldn’t have lost. We went back to practice, back to the drawing board and came back strong.”

Bear Creek went 10-for-16 from the free-throw line in the final quarter and Franks scored seven points to seal the win.

“We are learning our roles and they know not one kid can beat a team out there,” Gosch said. “I think that fourth quarter it felt like everyone was contributing. That is really our system.”

The win advanced Bear Creek (4-1) to the tournament’s championship game 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

“It means a lot, especially being the defending champion,” Gosch said of getting back to the title game in the annual tournament the Bears host. “How cool it would be to go against Coach Pachner and Arapahoe?”

That is precisely what is on tap Saturday at Bear Creek High School. Gosch will face his old mentor Troy Pachner and Arapahoe. Gosch was an assistant coach under Pachner at D’Evelyn before Gosch took the helm of Bear Creek’s program.

  • Arapahoe boys basketball coach Troy Pachner wins his 400th career game

LAKEWOOD — Fittingly, Troy Pachner won his 400th career coaching victory on a basketball court in Jeffco.

Arapahoe’s 73-44 victory over Lakewood late Friday night in the semifinals of the Bear Creek Invitational marked a huge milestone for Pachner, who is in his 25th year coaching high school hoops.

Arapahoe senior Bryson Stephens (23) led the way with 16 points Friday night in the Warriors’ 73-44 victory over Lakewood. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“It’s exciting to have that Jeffco feeling,” said Pachner who coached in the Jeffco League for 21 years at D’Evelyn and Valor Christian. “I’m excited to do this in Jeffco.”

It started with Pachner cutting his teeth coaching in California for three years before moving to Colorado where he took over the heading coaching job at D’Evelyn in 1998.

“We had an incredible 17-year run at D’Evelyn. That was outstanding,” said Pachner, who guided the Jaguars to the Class 3A state championship in 2004. “I had a really good four years at Valor with some really great kids over there, but I’ll be honest. This is where I want to do it.”

Pachner guided Valor to the Class 4A state title in 2017. He is in his first year at Arapahoe. The Warriors (3-1 record) haven’t had a winning season since their 2013-14 campaign.

“It’s very different,” Arapahoe senior Bryson Stephens said of the change with the Warriors’ program. “He (Pachner) doesn’t tolerate losing at all which is a great thing. He has made it clear that we are here to win.”

Stephens (16 points) led the way for Arapahoe as the Warriors led from wire-to-wire against Lakewood (3-2). The Warriors had four players reach double-digit points as nine players scored for Arapahoe, but in Pachner signature-style it was the Warriors’ pressure defense that guided the way.

“Our defensive pressure set the whole tone,” Pachner said after the 29-point victory. “That was the key.”

Lakewood junior Michael Bennett was the lone Tiger in double-digit points with 15 points on the night. Despite the loss, Lakewood coach Daryl Johnson was all smiles when he gave a congratulating embrace to Pachner after the game.

“I haven’t won a single one of these games,” Pachner said. “I’ve been blessed to have some unbelievable players going all the way back. Credit to those guys and credit to my (assistant) coaches.”

Pachner also pointed out how important his wife Frances, son Isiah and daughter Heidi have been to his success.

“They have allowed me to seek my passion and I’ve just really appreciative of that,” Pachner said.

Bear Creek coach Will Gosch — an assistant for Pachner at D’Evelyn for six seasons — handed his mentor the game ball after the victory. Gosch’s Bears will square off against Pachner’s Warriors in the Bear Creek Invitational championship game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bear Creek High School.

“Tomorrow is big,” Stephens said. “Let’s go get 401.”

  • Monarch boys basketball rallies to defeat Chatfield

LITTLETON — Monarch senior AJ Tennessen asserted himself in the fourth quarter Thursday night at Chatfield High School.

Tennessen scored 11 points in the final 8 minutes to spearhead a 33-point fourth quarter for the Coyotes (3-3 record). The scoring barrage erased a double-digit lead by the home Chargers (3-3) and gave Monarch a 73-71 victory.

“We stayed in it the whole game and never gave up,” Tennessen said. “We kept with it and kept fighting.”

Monarch had possession with the game tied at 71-71 in the final 30 seconds. The Coyotes got great ball movement to give senior Matt Chen an open lane to the basket. Chen drove to the paint and when the defense slid over, Chen shoveled a pass to a cutting Tennessen for the eventual game-winning layup.

“The plan was to drive it into the paint, either get a kick-out shot or get it down low,” Tennessen said of his layup with 6.8 seconds left. “My man helped in the middle so that left me open for the layup.”

The win ended a 3-game losing streak for Monarch and first-year coach Tim DeBerry.

“These are just sticking with it and they figured it out,” DeBerry said of the 33-point fourth quarter after the Coyotes had just 10 points in the third quarter and trailed by a much as 15 points late in the third quarter. “These kids were dying for a win and we got it.”

Monarch had to face some adversity. Starting senior guard Deuce Humphrey had to leave the game in the first quarter have suffering a bad cut on his forehead. The cut would need stitches, but Humphrey returned in the second half.

Chen finished with a game-high 17 points, including two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Junior Joey Covington had 16 points and a big 3-pointer with 1:43 left in the final quarter that put the Coyotes up 70-66.

Monarch made a living at the free-throw line. The Coyotes finished 18-for-25 from the charity stripe with Tennessen doing most of the damage going 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.

“We know were are unsized and have to use fouls. This is the first night in six games that it has hurt us,” Chatfield coach Erik Buehler said of Chatfield’s defensive struggles in the final quarter. “We have to be better on our rotations and stop guys further from the rim rather than at the rim.”

Chatfield juniors Nate Jacobson and Carter Rubin led the way for the Chargers offensively. Both had 16 points each and combined for nine 3-pointers. Sophomore Chase Miller pitched in 14 points.

“We know we can play that way and if we can string quarters together like that we can go on runs and take on just about anyone,” Buehler said of the Chargers’ 23-point third quarter where Chatfield broke out to a 53-40 lead going to the fourth quarter.

Buehler is in his first year at the helm of the Chargers’ boys basketball program. He was an assistant last year under longtime Chatfield coach Stephen Schimpeler. Buehler, who was also an assistant coach and interim head coach at Golden under John Anderson. He stepped in to the head coaching position at Chatfield when Schimpeler retired after last season.

“It is definitely different,” Buehler said taking over Chatfield’s program and his time as the interim head coach at Golden. “I took over for two legends (Schimpeler and Anderson). The kids have been great. They have bought in and that has been huge for us. It’s awesome so far.”

Chatfield is a few years removed from having some solid postseason runs. The Chargers made the 5A state quarterfinals during the 2016-17 season and 5A state semifinals during the 2015-16 season.

Chatfield is back out on the road next week. The Chargers are at Brighton on Monday, Dec. 16, before playing in the Mullen Holiday Tournament on Dec. 18, 19 and 21 at Mullen High School.

Buehler hopes to have Chatfield junior Dylan Carter back next week. The Chargers’ leading scorer — 14.2 points per game — missed the game against Monarch with an injury.

“Hopefully he (Carter) is healed up,” Buehler said of the Chargers’ leading scorer. “We have four games next week so we didn’t want to take any chances this week. Hopefully he can help us in the next four games.”

Monarch senior AJ Tennessen (44) and junior Sam Carlson (21) have Chatfield sophomore Christian Foutch blanketed during the first half Thursday night. The Coyotes had a 33-point fourth quarter to rally for a dramatic 73-71 road victory. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)
