Salida girls swimming on pace to make school history

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) There are a lot of things the town of Salida does very well. The town as a whole is very visitor friendly with a versatile atmosphere that almost anyone can enjoy.
When Colorado residents talk about heading west to that region of the state, it’s mostly associated with a trip to the Monarch ski area. But inside the walls of the high school, a group of athletes doesn’t care about skiing.
The girls swim team cares about making history in the pool and there is a real feeling that they are on the verge of doing just that.
“This group of girls came in with a lot of focus and we had a couple of freshmen come in that are very strong, that have been training in our summer program,” coach Wendy Gorie said. “We do not have a year-round program in Salida. We only have a summer league program, which is very unusual.”
Nevertheless, this team is looking every bit the part of a state contender. The Spartans came in at No. 1 in the Class 3A girls swim rankings this week and they have the results to back it up. The 200-yard medley relay team has the best time in the class and is hoping they can open the state meet up with a win in the event to set the tone for what they want to accomplish.
“It’s a little intimidating because we’ve never been seeded first by that much ever,” junior Hannah Rhude said. “So it’s a little intimidating but it’s really exciting to see how we stack up to everyone and how our hard work has been paying off.”
History was made for the team a year ago when senior Elise Mishmash claimed gold in the 100 freestyle. That was the very first indication that something special was coming together in the small town tucked in near the collegiate peaks.
“The state championship in the 100 freestyle,” Gorie said. “That is the glamour event of swimming.”

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) So if she can do it, other members of the team can put their own mark on the state meet next month at the VMAC.
Mishmash already has the top time in the state for 3A, but just over a second and a half behind her is Lily Lengerich, who also occupies a spot on the medley relay team.
Drawing on Mishmash’s experience from last year, the Spartans are ready to get on the big stage and do something special for their school. And they want to do it together.
“We’re here to bring it this year and we’ve never had this kind of intensity before,” Lenderich said. “We’re just really ready to take that to state.”
The Spartans look strong at the top of their lineup, but they’ll have plenty of work to do to hold off defending champion Evergreen as well as Pueblo County.
Mishmash certainly has ambitions of repeating in the 100 freestyle and adding a 100 breaststroke title to her name. Her one minute, 10.03 seconds in that event is the second-best time in 3A this year.
Regardless of how she fares in her individual events, her focus is not to get these wins for herself. She wants them for her teammates so together they can do something special for their school.
“I think that that is actually a big motivator,” Mishmash said. I think it’s really special to do something super awesome in your school history as a team, not so much as an individual. So I really think that that’s a big drive for us.”

No. 7 Ralston Valley girls basketball rallies to win over Lakewood
LAKEWOOD — Ralston Valley junior Sydney Bevington has always been a ‘pass first’ guard for the Mustangs.
However, Bevington has clearly learned how to flip the switch when it comes to dominating games in crunch time.
“She is starting to takeover games,” Ralston Valley coach Jeff Gomer said of his talented 6-foot-1 guard. “She is starting to realize what she can do with (shooting).”

Ralston Valley junior Sydney Bevington poured in a career-high 25 points Tuesday night against Lakewood. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Bevington poured in 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead Ralston Valley — No. 7 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A girls basketball rankings — to a comeback road victory Tuesday night against Lakewood. The Tigers (4-8 record) led the Mustangs (11-2) 33-29 heading to the final quarter.
Ralston Valley went on an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter, led by Bevington. The junior ended with a career-high 25 points.
“I just felt like the shots were open for me,” Bevington said of her 14 points in the fourth quarter that including going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. “There was a size difference with who was guarding me. Overall it was a team effort, but I’m glad I was able to help.”
The three-year starter also grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. Bevington is now averaging 14.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
“She (Bevington) is going to get plays, but we gave her some extra plays where we were in sleep mode,” Lakewood coach Chris Poisson said. “(Ralston Valley) deserved to win. They made more plays than we did. I’m not disappointed in our effort. We are close.”
While Bevington scored 14 of 18 points for the Mustangs in the final eight minutes, senior Ellie Schweiker had a key layup in the final minute that extended Ralston Valley’s lead to 45-40 with less than 30 seconds to play.

Lakewood junior Mariah Ramos (22) tries to get a shot over the outstretched arms of Ralston Valley senior Ellie Schweiker on Tuesday night at Lakewood High School. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “I felt like we needed a momentum shift,” Bevington said. “I felt like the whole game was back-and-forth, but that layup (by Schweiker) really sparked us.”
Sophomore Saya Sabus pitched in 11 points for the Mustangs. It was Ralston Valley’s fourth straight victory.
Lakewood’s crafty senior guard tandem of Nadia Trevizo-Medina and Aaliyah Sabala had a dozen points each in the Tigers’ loss.
“We might be the best 4-8 team around,” Poisson said. “We should be disappointed we lost, but confidence moving forward that we are almost there and hopefully turn that corner.”
Ralston Valley and Lakewood finally get into their conference schedule Friday, Jan. 24. The Mustangs host Chatfield at the end of the week, while the Tigers stay at home to face Dakota Ridge at 7 p.m. Friday night.
“Now that it’s almost February we mine as well play some league games,” Poisson joked. “Mentally we can refresh and get to the third phase of the season. We’ll take the lessons we’ve learned and hopefully get better.”
No. 3 Valor Christian (13-1) are seeking a second-straight 5A Jeffco League title. The Eagles biggest conference hurdle could come early in league play. Valor hosts Ralston Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 29, in what will be a top-10 match-up next week.
Gomer likely won’t have a fully healthy squad. Junior Brooklyn Seymour missed her second straight game Tuesday night due to an injury.
“That is our only game that week,” Gomer said looking ahead to Valor. “We would like to have Brooklyn back, but we probably won’t. It will be a good test for us. Valor is really good. I’m looking forward to it to see where we are at.”
