Montrose boys basketball is headed to the Class 4A Sweet 16 following an overtime win over Evergreen on Saturday.

Montrose won, 48-46.

“What a great high school basketball game,” Montrose coach Ryan Voehringer said. “I have nothing but respect for Coach Dolan and his team. I though we played extremely well on the defensive end as a unit. We drew five offensive fouls. Are help defense was great and did a great job on their ball-screen action.”

Luke Hutto led Montrose with 25 points and eight rebounds.

“Luke Hutto was a man on both ends,” Voehringer said. “I also thought we had great minutes from two bench players, Ashden Oberg and Fletcher Cheezum. Ashden made two huge plays in overtime. I’ve been telling those two to be ready when their number was called. Ashden stepped up huge. Proud fo him. Great team win. Survive and advance.”

The game was back-and-forth from start to finish. Evergreen led 12-11 after the first and Montrose was ahead 24-22 at halftime. They held that two-point advance by leading 32-30 after three. Montrose led by four with 50 seconds left in regulation, but Evergreen battled back to tie it at 40-40 after four quarters.

Tied at 46 in overtime with 5.4 seconds left, Jordan Jennings found Oberg for the game-winning bucket.

“The win was a grind-out game,” Montrose senior Trey Schwerdtfeger said. “There was no break. Every play counted. Having Luke out during OT was hard, but when it comes down to it, good teams can score all five players and when your number is called you better be ready and our guys were. That’s what it came down to.”

Added Trey Reese, a sophomore: “What led to our win was our defense. Every ball screen we switch, which worked and not getting in a hurry when they pressured us bringing the ball up helped.”

Griffin Lauritano had 18 points to lead Evergreen, and Cam Morlan had 10.

“Montrose played a very good game,” Evergreen coach Jeff Dolan said. “Hutto has an extremely bright future. He made some big plays. Montrose is very disciplined and well coached. Our players did everything we could down the stretch to keep us in the game. Both teams were back and forth and both teams never quit. I can’t be more proud of this team and the fight they have.”
