Sophia Abernethy could cross the finish line and not have to worry about what was happening immediately behind her.

The Standley Lake senior had pulled well ahead of the field and crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 53.3 seconds to take the win at the Ralston Valley cross country invite. Arvada West’s Amelie Bauer finished in 22:17.3 to take second place.

The boys race was dominated by Arvada West. Senior Logan Deison crossed the finish line in 17:27.1 and was only in danger of getting caught by two of his teammates.

Overall, the Wildcats had six runners finish in the top 10 of the race. Since only four get scored, Deison, David Rhoades, Dominic Danborn and Gabe Schultz gave the team 10 points, the absolute best score a team can record.

Pomona got two top-10 finishers to take second place and host Ralston Valley finished third. Pomona junior Dylan Jenkins was the top non-Arvada West finisher at 18:28.3.

  • Brighton, Windsor, Pine Creek boys golfers shoot under par

For the second Thursday in a row, several Colorado high school boys golfers managed to get to their respective clubhouses after playing rounds under par.

Brighton’s Kyle Leydon had the best day of any of them as he helped Brighton claim the EMAC North tournament at Thorncreek. His 6-under-par 66 was the best round of the day throughout the entire state.

He made quick work of the front 9, getting out in just 30 shots thanks in big part to a 5-hole birdie streak starting on the par-5 third hole. His momentum cooled after the turn as he match his three birdies on the back 9 with three bogeys. Nonetheless, his 66 was 17 shots better than Prairie View’s Keagan Bond who finished second.

Pine Creek sophomore Wesley Erling took advantage of his him course and putted well despite the greens being recently aerated. He made back-to-back bogeys on No. 2 and No. 3 before getting both those strokes back with an eagle and the par-5 fourth.

He was comfortably at 4-under on the back but made bogey on three of his final four holes to win the Pine Creek Invite with a 71.

Windsor’s Brentyn Paiz had an adventurous route to his 71. He made a bogey on his second hole (No. 12) at Pelican Lakes but quickly moved under par with an eagle on 15. He made bogeys on 3 and 9 but still got through the stretch at even par thanks a birdie on No. 5.

He was even heading into 10, his 18th hole of the day, but finished his round off with a birdie to become the only player at the tournament to shoot a red number.

  • D’Evelyn softball rallies to upset No. 4 Chatfield

DENVER — D’Evelyn softball got a serious confidence boost Wednesday.

The Jaguars rallies from deficits of 4-0, 5-2 and 7-5 against Chatfield on D’Evelyn’s home field. D’Evelyn pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take its lone lead 8-7 and score a walk-off victory.

“It is so good. I can’t even express how good it is,” D’Evelyn sophomore Syndee Fark said after the dramatic victory over the No. 4-ranked Chargers in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A softball rankings.

A bloop one-out hit by junior Avery Garbarek scored junior Kensley Arbaugh from third base for the walk-off, game-winning hit. The Jaguars scored six runs in the final two innings off Chatfield senior pitcher Izzy DiNapoli.

“It’s a really big win,” D’Evelyn coach Dan Porreco said. “Izzy (DiNapoli) is one of the best. We battled a lot. We did a lot of the little things and didn’t make a lot of mistakes.”

The Jaguars (3-0 record) also took advantage of four errors Chatfield (6-2) committed in the final two innings. It was the second loss of the season for the Chargers.

“It is definitely frustrating, but we have to be better,” Chatfield coach Jen Lazzeri said. “We’ve talked about playing at an intensity level in practices and games which is what we need to get a league and state championship. We’ve talked about what that sounds, looks and feels like. We didn’t have it today.”

Chatfield seniors Courtney Bidwell and Madison Shepard led the Chargers offensively. Bidwell went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples. Shepard was 2-for-4 and a check-swing RBI hit in the top of the seventh inning gave Chatfield a 6-5 lead.

A RBI sacrifice fly by DiNapoli pushed the Chargers’ lead to 7-5 heading in the bottom of the seventh inning.

D’Evelyn quickly answered with senior Eve Dalla walking to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Senior Aubrey Garbarek ripped an RBI double to score Dalla. A dropped fly ball in right field scored the game-tying run setting up Avery Garbarek to knock in the game-winning run.

Fark went 3-for-4 from the plate, including knocking in the Jaguars’ first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. She also picked up the win on the mound.

“I knew we could wake-up the bats,” Fark said of her mindset when she took over the pitching duties from junior Mia Riebe in the middle of the fourth inning with the Jaguars trailing 4-0. “I was a little nervous at first, but I knew I just had to hit my spots and I had my defense behind me.”

D’Evelyn begins its conference play in the 4A Jeffco League on Sept. 8 against Alameda International.

“Now we have to move on,” Porreco said. “We’ve got a tough league and some tough teams ahead.”

Chatfield opens Class 5A Jeffco League play later this week. The Chargers host Ralston Valley at 4:30 pm Friday, Sept. 4.

“I think it is good,” Lazzeri said of the quick turnaround to face Ralston Valley in a conference opener 48 hours after the loss to D’Evelyn. “It’s an awesome group of girls. There were tears in their eyes after this one. They feel the pressure of no regional tournament and just the top 16 teams go to state.”

D’Evelyn not only has the tough 4A Jeffco League head, but also the Dave Sanders Tournament next week that will be played at the Aurora Sports Park, site of the one-day state tournament for Class 5A, 4A and 3A this season.

“It’s hard, but we are fortunate to be out here that is the main thing,” Porreco said of the shortened season. “We have to stay safe and hopefully nobody gets sick. We are fortunate to be out here, which is a great thing.”

As Niwot and Mullen both try to get their level up play up to a state championship level, they put their talents on display against each other in a key regular season dual.

Niwot came away with the 4-3 win and had to earn every bit of it on a warm Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars and Mustangs split the doubles matches as Mullen’s No. 1 team of Dante Dino and Greg McMullan took down Ivan Calderon and Lichen Liao 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the day’s only three-set match. Mullen as won No. 4 doubles with Sean Phelps and Blake Zaragoza beating Ryan Gray and Raaghav 6-0, 6-2.

The Cougars got doubles wins from upperclassmen tandem as Alan Wilcox and Xavier Moy beat Luc Caldwell and Alex Evans 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 doubles while Maia Heather and Reeves Moor beat Patrick Duke and Colin Mackenzie 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3 doubles.

The singles matches ended somewhat decisively in all three positions with the Cougars getting two wins to Mullen’s one.

In No. 2 singles, George Henry Hanzel held off Sam Keronen 6-4, 6-0 to give the Mustangs their only singles win on the day.

Niwot controlled the rest of the match as Luke Weber beat Jack Barker 7-5, 6-0 and defending 4A No. 1 singles champ Neil Wilcox beat Mac Caldwell 6-2, 6-3.

Wilcox is seeking his second state title but is also determined to help his team claim a championship. The Cougars finished third in the team standings last year behind champion Cheyenne Mountain and the very Mullen they beat on Wednesday.

“I always have to be there for my team,” he told CHSAANow.com last week. “It’s important for to win it just for me, but it’s just as important for our whole team to go out and win a state championship.”

Getting a with over last year’s state runner-up has to be a huge mental boost in that regard. Boys tennis regionals are just over two weeks away with the state tournament slated to begin in three weeks.
