    With the regular season nearing its end, the top two ranked softball teams took to the field for what could be a state championship preview.

    But if that’s the case, it’s hard not to consider No. 1 Eaton a heavy favorite heading into next week’s state softball tournament.

    Eaton jumped out to a quick lead and never relented en route to a 17-6 win over the defending Class 3A state champion (and No.2-ranked) Bulldogs.

    Each side scored multiple runs in the first inning as they went into the top of the second with Eaton holding a 3-2 lead. But then the bats heated up and five Eaton players crossed home plate over the course of the third inning to make it an 8-2 game. Eaton scored four more in the top of the fourth and University finally found a little offensive momentum in the bottom half of the inning, matching Eaton’s four runs.

    But Eaton refused to take the foot off the gas and scored a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game after six.

    Jennifer Jarnagin led the Eaton offense going 4-for-5 on the day, blasting a home run and driving in three total runs. She also crossed home plate four times.

    Olivia Comer also played a big role as she went 2-for-3 and drove in a game-high four runs.

    Freshman Sadie Ross was steady in the pitcher’s circle as she three all six innings, striking out five hitters and allowing four earned runs. With the win she improves to 9-1 on the year. She also held the Bulldogs to nine hits through the course of the game.

    Just two players in University’s lineup had multiple hits in the contest. Andi Padilla and Kendree Kern each hit safely twice, but neither drove a run in and Kern managed to score once. Delaney Wieneke’s lone hit of the game was a solo home run.

    Kaden Wyatt and Lexi Sanchez shared the team lead with two RBI’s on the day.

    Both teams close out regular season play on Saturday and await their fates when the 3A state bracket is released early next week.

  • Conifer and Golden run to team titles at 4A Jeffco League XC Championships

    ARVADA — Green Mountain senior Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos and Evergreen senior Sarah Allen have made the most of their opportunities so far this cross country season.

    Tuohy-Gaydos and Allen claimed the individual titles at the Class 4A Jeffco League Cross Country Championships held Thursday at Standley Lake Basketball Barn in Arvada.

    “The course is deceitful,” Allen said after her time of 19 minutes, 35 seconds which was 15 seconds faster than Golden sophomore Lily Mourer who finished second. “You’ll think you’ll be going pretty fast because it is pretty flat, but with all the grass and uneven texture it’s pretty slow and hard.”

    It has been a tough prep career for Allen. She didn’t make varsity her freshman year and then came down with bronchitis her sophomore year. Last year, she suffered stress fractures that prevented her from running for a second straight season.

    “This is the first time of making it to this point,” Allen said, who has won all seven cross country races she has entered this season. “I’m really proud of it. Running is my favorite thing. Getting to this point feels so rewarding.”

    Allen was able to pull away from Mourer and Standley Lake senior Sophia Abernethey — both returning first-time all-conference runners — to keep momentum heading into regionals next week.

    “I really want to keep up with the faster girls,” Allen said of moving into regionals for the Cougars on Oct. 8 in Gypsum. “The girls at regionals are really good.”

    Golden’s girls just edged D’Evelyn by two points to win the team title. Mourer and junior Meredith Overton finished in the Top-5 to pace the Demons.

    On the boys side, Tuohy-Gaydos continued his extremely successful prep running career at Green Mountain. He will go down as one of the most decorated boys runners in 4A Jeffco history. He finished Top-10 at the league championships as a freshman before winning three straight individual conference titles.

    “It’s really rare and I’m really lucky to be able to do that,” Tuohy-Gaydos said of his three-peat.

    Tuohy-Gaydos has won every race he has entered this Fall and continued his streak on Thursday. However, the senior is more focused on the team goals for the Rams.

    “Really when it comes to these races it’s not really about getting a time. It’s about helping the team,” Tuohy-Gaydos said after his time of 15:59.7 claimed the 4A Jeffco boys individual championship. “My time was sub-16 which on a course like this with a lot of surface changes and hills, I’m pretty happy with it.”

    Green Mountain was just edged out by Conifer for the team title. The Lobos were paced by seniors Zack Gacnik, Topi Alahuhta and junior Isaac Vanwestrienen. The Conifer trio all placed in the Top-5 to give the Lobos 38 team points. Green Mountain finished with 42.

    “Our team goal this year is to qualify for state,” Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos said. “For me, my individual goals are all intertwined with that. Whatever I can do to help my team qualify for state and win races is my goal.”

    The Jeffco League Cross Country Championships did look different with 4A teams competing Thursday and 5A teams running the same course coming up Friday afternoon. Normally both 5A and 4A run on the same day, but due to COVID guidelines the championships had to be split into two days.

    Tuohy-Gaydos is extremely grateful of the cross country season during the current pandemic.

    “I’m really appreciate CHSAA for one, allowing us to race. That is first and foremost,” Tuohy-Gaydos said. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to run this year as a senior. It makes me feel happy that people are following mask rules. I’m somebody who has family members that are high risk. I appreciate for what everyone is doing.”

  • Dos Rios members clear weather damage ahead of 3A boys golf tournament

    For what felt like the 100th time, 2020 seemed to have it in for Colorado high school athletics. With the boys golf state championships a month away, it wasn’t a global pandemic that threatened the chances of playing out the two rounds at Dos Rios Country Club.

    It was the Colorado weather that reared its ugly head.

    On Tuesday, Sept. 8 the weather forecast in Gunnison called for extreme wind conditions. On top of that, there was going to be snow. As the front passed through the town, the conditions were every bit as bad as any weather app or TV meteorologist said they’d be.

    When things were over, the Dos Rios Country Club — the site of the Class 3A boys golf tournament — was a mess.

    “We lost 40-plus trees on the golf course and thousands of branches and leaves,” general manager Al Pryor said. “It devastated the driving range. We have a line of poles that hold up the net and those poles cracked like toothpicks. It was horrible.”

    Pryor was faced with a decision. He could see the amount of work that it was going to take to get the course playable again. Pryor and his course superintendent Jim Mills arrived at the course at 8:30 a.m. the next morning and Pryor began to think he was going to have to make a very tough call to associate commissioner Tom Robinson.

    “I thought then that I was going to call Tom and cancel the entire event,” Pryor said. “There was no way. With the devastation I thought it was going to take two or three weeks to get it cleaned up to where it was playable.”

    After considering the options, Pryor reached into his deep Texas roots and decided that rather than pass the buck, it was time to roll up his sleeves and get to work.

    Gunnison is a small community and one that is proud to host an event like the boys golf state tournament. He gathered his staff and called for a member workday to start clearing and repairing the course. It was vital that the members got to enjoy the last remaining fall days to play themselves, but Pryor also wanted to give the high school athletes a memorable experience at his facility.

    “We had 25-plus people show for two days with chainsaws, lift trailers and probably got about 40 percent of the big stuff out of the playable areas,” Pryor said. “That left tons of stuff to do, but I knew we’d get it done. When you see it next weekend, it looks like nothing happened.”

    When the first players step up to the No. 1 and No. 10 tee boxes at 9 a.m. Monday morning, disaster will have officially been averted in a year where disaster has been the norm.

    When recounting the events that took place early last month and what had been done since then, it gives Pryor a huge feeling of pride toward his staff and the community that he has made his home.

    “I’ve been the PGA for 45 years, since 1975, and I’ve never seen anything this fulfilling as a small group, a small town that came together,” he said. “Wielding a chainsaw for eight or nine hours a day when you’re not used to it is hard. I had to tell them to stop because everyone was getting tired and I didn’t want anyone to get hurt. It was fulfilling to see this group of people come together to make sure the golf tournament could facilitate a state tournament. It was wonderful.”

  • Cross country team rankings by region

    The 2020 cross country regional fields will be determined, in part, by a coaches poll within each region.

    The official vote will be held this coming weekend. The coaches held a trial vote last weekend, and the results of that vote is below.
