  • Longoria carries No. 5 Pueblo South football to huge win over No. 10 Canon City

CANON CITY — There’s nothing fancy about the way George Longoria runs the ball. And there doesn’t have to be.

Ball security, identifying the gaps and breaking tackles are attributes that make him one of the best runners in the state and also why he was able to lead Class 3A No. 5 Pueblo South to a 26-21 win over No. Canon City on Friday.

“When you come out to Canon City, they have a good team and and they get good momentum,” Longoria said. “When get out there in the first 10 minutes, you have to fight.”

After winning the state wide coin toss on Thursday, South coach Ryan Goddard instantly knew that he wanted to put the ball into the hands of his high-powered offense. He fed Longoria early and often as the Colts (3-0 overall, 3-0 South Central League) found the end zone three times before the Tigers (3-1, 3-1) could blink.

“We came out with balance with run and pass,” Goddard said. “We’re a little more fresh. You have to remember this is only our third game. We mixed things up and we made some plays.”

Longoria carried a heavy load in that time, carrying the ball 19 times for 115 yards and all three scores in the first half alone.

But it was far from a one-man show. While Longoria was putting on a show with his running attack, junior quarterback Jace Bellah complimented the ground game by spreading the ball out to his squad of receiving targets.

In the same first half that saw Longoria rush for 115, Bellah hit four different receivers for 122 yards, most of which helped set up Longoria’s runs.

Canon City got on the board thanks to a long kick return from Josh Rall which put Lucas Walcott in position to find Seth Newton for a 16-yard score.

“Once that happened it opened up the flood gates, Canon City coach Tom O’Rourke said. “The kids realized we were in this. They needed that for the emotional and momentum part of it.”

That momentum carried right over into the second half.

The Tigers struck gold in the third with Walcott finding Rall for a 43-yard touchdown strike to make it a 20-14 game. It was the only score for either team in the third as the Tigers seemingly adjusted to South’s running attack.

But Longoria wasn’t going to be held down for long. He broke for runs of 10, 18 and 16 yards to set the Colts up for their fourth touchdown of the game. That came courtesy of Bellah on a one-yard run to push the lead to 26-14.

But the Tigers were quick to strike again as Walcott found Newton for a 65-yard touchdown pass cutting the lead to just five points.

Unable to sustain a drive, the Colts punted back to the Tigers and out the game in the hands of the defense. A botched snap helped, but the Colts held strong getting the ball back into Longoria’s hands where he capped off his night with 38 carries for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

“That’s George,” Goddard said. “He’s the guy that’s going to continue to pound and pound and he’s going to get a crease and make things happen.”

Overall the performance was better than what the Colts saw last week against Pueblo East but know there is plenty of work to do with the playoffs looming.

“All week we worked on cleaning up our mistakes from last week,” Bellah said. “I think we did a good job in the first half and next week just need to do a better job of carrying it over in the second half.”

  • Big plays lift Bear Creek football to win over Wheat Ridge

LAKEWOOD — It appeared the only thing that could stop Bear Creek senior Adrian Valenzuela from finding the end zone were penalty flags Friday night at Jeffco Stadium.

The big playmaker for the Bears (2-3, 2-2 in Class 4A Jeffco League) had four touchdown catches of 66, 20, 13 and 30 yards to help Bear Creek to a 46-25 victory over Wheat Ridge.

“Honestly, coming into this game my mentality was this was going to be the last time playing at Jeffco Stadium,” Valenzuela said. “I wanted to go out with a bang.”

Valenzuela also had a kickoff return and punt return for touchdowns called back because of Bear Creek penalties late in the second quarter and early in the third quarter. If not for the flags, the senior could have had six touchdown on the night.

“I’ll take the four receiving touchdowns, but man, I was hurting seeing those flags on the kickoff return and punt return,” Valenzuela said.

Valenzuela did put the hurt on Wheat Ridge (0-5, 0-4) helping the Bears score 25 unanswered points to open up a 39-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.

“Explosive,” is how Bear Creek’s first-year head coach Matt Steinfeldt described Valenzuela. “There are a lot of special pieces on this football team. Adrian is one of those that stood out on film. He missed a couple of games with an injury. He is now just getting into that in-game season.”

Bear Creek junior quarterback Jaedon Minter tossed all four touchdowns to Valenzuela as Bear Creek picked up its second victory in three weeks.

“I would love it,” Minter said of wishing he had Valenzuela for one more season. “He was my No. 1 receiver. He is a hard worker and the main guy I have to look for.”

Wheat Ridge senior Sam Mcdonough and Bear Creek junior Richie Caballero scored on short touchdown runs in the first quarter as the 4A Jeffco rivals went into the second quarter tied 7-7. Then it turned into the Valenzuela show.

His 66-yard touchdown with 11:15 left in the second quarter gave the Bears a 14-7 lead. The Farmers (0-5, 0-4) responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Luciano Vecchiarelli and 32-yard field goal by senior Matthias England to put Wheat Ridge up 17-14.

However, Minter hooked up with Valenzuela for a big 20-yard touchdown with 2:05 left before halftime to give the Bears the lead 21-17.

“It was all about my team,” Valenzuela said. “I couldn’t have done any of this without my team and my lineman. This was a team win. Yes, I scored four touchdowns, but I couldn’t have done it without my team.”

Bear Creek dominated the third quarter with the Bears’ defense not allowing the Farmers to cross midfield. Junior Andrew Montoya kicked a 34-yard touchdown and Minter found Valenzuela for his third touchdown of the game. The 13-yard touchdown catch gave the Bears a 31-17 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Minter to Valenzuela for a 30-yard touchdown with 8:38 left in the fourth quarter put the icing on the victory cake for the Bears.

“As seniors we wanted to leave our legacy and our mark on this place,” Valenzuela said, who took photos with his fellow seniors at midfield after the victory.

Bear Creek is scheduled to close out its regular-season schedule next Friday night against Golden (1-3, 1-2) at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

“When we came into this program we knew there was a lot of talent here that we could mold and develop,” Steinfeldt said. “Consistency going into Golden is a huge thing for us.”

Bear Creek will likely play a non-playoff game on the road for Week 7 to close out the season.

“I feel like this program is going to keep on winning,” Minter said. “We found a new coaching staff that loves us. They know exactly what to do to have us win.”

Wheat Ridge wraps up its regular season Saturday, Nov. 14, against Standley Lake at Jeffco Stadium.

Ponderosa quarterback Jack Hanenburg threw touchdown pass to Kolton Miller with 38 seconds left to lift his No. 4 Mustangs over No. 10 Montrose in a big Class 4A football matchup on Friday night.

With the game tied at 14, Hanenburg found Miller from 20 yards out to lift his team to a 21-14 win.

“Montrose is one of the best teams in the state,” Ponderose coach Jaron Cohen said. “It was truly a game that could have gone either way.”

Hanenburg opened the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cael Porter in the first quarter, giving Ponderosa a 7-0 lead.

Montrose responded with a 22-yard score from Trent Blundell, tying thing at 7-7.

But Ponderosa retook the lead following a 96-yard drive. Again, it was Hanenburg leading the way, and his 1-yard touchdown made it 14-7 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter. Then, in the fourth, Montrose evened the game at 14-14 when Briger Kirtz threw a 20-yard touchdown to Blundell with 2:23 remaining.

That set the stage for the game-winning drive from Hanenburg and Ponderosa.

“We had some big stops on defense and had a game winning drive that showed tremendous poise,” Cohen said. “I am incredibly proud of our program.”

Ponderosa’s defense held Montrose from scoring in three trips to the red zone, including two stops on fourth-and-goal.

Said Montrose coach Brett Mertens: “Proud of our kids. They played extremely hard. The game could have gone either way and things didn’t go our way at the end.”
