The CHSAA office on Friday released the schedules and alignment for teams that have opted to play in the spring 2021 football season.

    Find them here:

These alignments and schedules are subject to change should teams opt out and/or in prior to the season.

A total of 54 teams are set to play football in Season C, after opting for that season this fall. They are split into five classifications: 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 8-man.

Teams will play a six-game regular season, with three scheduled home games and three on the road. Teams that do not make the postseason will have the opportunity to play a seventh game after the regular season.

Like the fall season, eight teams per classification will make the playoffs. The Season C championship Weekend will take place at CSU Pueblo on May 7 and May 8.

Season C football schools can begin practice on Feb. 25, 2021. The first week of competition begins on March 11.

  • Quarterback Cade Phillips is putting up record numbers for Cheraw football

(Photo courtesy of Kendi Groves/Hanna Hansen)

In the midst of an unprecedented season, Cheraw quarterback Cade Phillips is putting up unprecedented numbers.

The sophomore has been getting better with each week this season and has the Wolverines sitting at 4-1 heading into the final week of the regular season. Perhaps the unordinary part of his story is that he’s getting it done through the air, an unconventional method when it comes to the 6-man classification.

In five games, he’s thrown for 945 yards, 24 touchdowns and has yet to be intercepted by opposing defenses.

He ranks second in all of 6-man for total passing yards and first in touchdowns. In all, just three players have over 900 passing yards in the classification and just two have over 20 passing touchdowns. That honor goes to Phillips and Granada’s Dominic Coleman.

“It’s crazy, honestly,” Phillips said. “First off, I have to thank my blockers and receivers for catching the ball. You see a lot of 6-man teams rushing for big numbers and for Coleman and I to start turning the 6-man game to more of a passing game is crazy.”

As luck would have it, those two battled in what will go down as an all-time regular season 6-man classic. Phillips threw for 271 yards and Coleman bettered him with 294. But each threw seven touchdown passes which set a state record for combined touchdown throws in a game.

Granada won the game 67-60 but it was a show that was well worth the price of admission.

“That was a fun game to be a part of on both sides,” Cheraw coach Brad Phillips said. “It was two fairly high-ranked teams going at it. It was amazing, even for 6-man, how quick both those teams were able to score at some point and both of them have good defenses.”

The next game, against Manzanola, he threw for seven touchdowns again. His 14 touchdowns in consecutive games is a 6-man record, and his 18 TDs in the past three games is also a 6-man record.

This is far from a one-man show. Both coach and quarterback, father and son, praise the effort of the team as a whole. Trey Pearce leads the receiving corps with 384 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.

If there was any indication that the shootout was a one-off performance for Cade, that went out the window the very next week as he threw for 292 yards and seven more touchdowns in an 82-38 win over Manzanola. This time, however, he added 157 yards and a touchdown while running the ball.

It wasn’t really ideal to have to see those numbers again, but there came a level of comfort knowing that if Cade needs to take to the air, he’s more than capable of effectively slinging the ball around the yard.

“We were hoping he wouldn’t have to,” Brad said. “We were hoping our defense would slow Manzanola down a little more so we wouldn’t have to put up the kind of numbers we did. He has really good receivers and really good blocking and he’s capable of doing that on any evening that we need him to.”

It’s a fun way to play the game.

One of the greatest appeals of the 6-man game is the wide-open nature of the field which tends to allow for several exciting scoring plays in a game. Add in what a kid like Cade can do when he’s generating offense through the air while a teammate like Braeden Harris is balancing the attack on the ground and it makes for some of the most exciting football in the state.

“Our team can score 36 points in a quarter and come back from a 20-point deficit pretty fast,” Cade said. “It’s amazing what we can do when we’re clicking on all cylinders.”

The current COVID-19 pandemic didn’t allow for the normal signing celebrations across Jeffco during the first of four signing days coming up for the Class of 2021. However, a number of Jeffco Public Schools student-athletes signed on Nov. 11 to continue their college careers.

Ralston Valley had nine girls sign, highlighted by last year’s Class 5A girls diving state champion Isabel Gregersen. She will dive for Florida State University. Sydney Bevington is taking her basketball talent to Santa Clara University and Jordan West is staying close to home to play softball at Colorado State University.

  • All seven football championship games to be played at CSU Pueblo

All seven classifications of the 2020 state football championship games will be held on the campus of CSU Pueblo as part of CHSAA’s Championship Weekend this December.

The CHSAA office and the Pueblo-based Friends of Football made the joint announcement of the games on Wednesday.

The event will mark the first time in the history of Colorado high school football that all seven classifications will play at the same site as part of Championship Weekend, which is slated for Dec. 3, 4 and 5 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.

“This is an opportunity to showcase all seven levels of football — from schools with 30 students to schools with more than 3,000 — on the same field on the same weekend,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Adam Bright, who oversees football. “This will be a great culminating event to this football season.”

The historic combination of playing all seven classifications at one site will result in the following schedule:

    • The 6-man and 8-man games will be held on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
    • Friday, Dec. 4, will see the 2A and 4A games, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
    • On Saturday, Dec. 5, the 1A, 3A and 5A games will be held at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

With varying field dimensions, temporary goal posts and field paint will be used for the 6-man game, and 8-man will use the same temporary field paint.

The CHSAA Board of Directors unanimously approved the site move during a meeting on Tuesday evening.

“The unanimous vote speaks to our confidence in this plan,” said Troy Baker, the president of the CHSAA Board of Directors. “We are excited for Championship Weekend, and are celebrating the fact that the CHSAA staff has worked so tirelessly to put this plan together with the Friends of Football.”

CHSAA’s Season A began its championship season with golf in early October. Tennis, softball and cross country have all completed successful championship events.

“Our championship season started with golf, and then continued with tennis, softball, and cross country,” said CHSAA commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green. “For me, this is about a celebration of the athletes, coaches, athletic directors and parents in our school communities; our officials; and the CHSAA staff. Even in the midst of the pandemic, our Association has found a way to celebrate high school athletics and activities. We are looking forward to celebrating football as the culmination of Season A.

The relationship between CHSAA and Friends of Football began in 2018 when the groups combined to put on the 2A and 3A state football championships at CSU-Pueblo.

“I want to thank the Pueblo community, the leaders within the city, the leaders at CSU-Pueblo, and the Friends of Football for not only advocating for this event, but wanting this event,” Blanford-Green said. “Their work and their history has shown they want this event. It’s always great to host an event where you’re wanted. They did everything they could to make this happen.”

“Friends of Football and CSU Pueblo Athletics are very proud and excited to work through the challenges of 2020 for the benefit of student athletes from 6-man schools to 5A schools,” said Dan DeRose, president of the Friends of Football. “The Pueblo community will do all we can to make this a weekend that will never be forgotten.”

In order to be able to play the games in Pueblo, Friends of Football worked diligently with the Pueblo County Health Department, the Pueblo County Commissioners, and CSU Pueblo to create a variance in state health guidelines that was approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The variance allows for 1,400 fans per game, meaning roughly 15% of stadium capacity will be used.

Safety measures as part of the variance include:

    • Upon purchase of a ticket, contact information will be gathered to communicate safety measures, as well as for contact tracing purposes, if necessary.
    • Seven entrances will be used.
    • Fans will have color-coded tickets, which will help direct them where to go.
    • Seven entrances will be used, with touchless ticket taking.
    • Groups have designated parking areas, as well as their own restrooms and concessions.
    • Masks will be mandatory.
    • Pods will be separated in different seating areas, and spaced six feet apart to maintain social distancing in any direction with neighboring pods.
    • The stadium will be cleared between each game.

The state football playoffs begin next week. State playoff brackets will be posted on CHSAANow.com on Sunday.
