In front of parents, grandparents, the student body and the community, the ffith-ranked Montrose football team beat Grand Junction, 54-7, on Friday’s homecoming.
“I felt like the engery was high and we were ready,” Montorse senior Gabe Miller said. “Our senior class is leading better then I could have ever hoped. I hope that this is just the beginning. I’m also realy happy to see our younger classmen stepping up and playing hard.”
The visiting Tigers got the ball to start the game but after Body Greiner recovdered a Tiger fumble, the Inidans took over on the Tigers 17 and Ethan Hartman went 17 yards for the game’s first touchdown. After the Montorse defense held, Hartman went 65 yards for a touchdown on the Indians’ next drive. The Indians would add two more touchdowns before the quarter ended and led 28-0 at the start of the second quarter.
The Indians pushed their lead to 42-0 by halftime and tacked on another pair of scores in the second half.
“Proud of how the kids came out and took care of business,” Montrose head coach Brett Mertens said. ”It was a great nigh to be a Montrose Indian and a great night for a homecoming crowd.”
Friday’s win kept the Montrose Indians unbeaten in 2021.
“Montrose is a very good football team,” Grand Junction head coach Landon McKee said. ”They have great size and get off the ball very well. Our kids responded to halftime and came out and didn’t quit the second half. We are pround of our kids and their response.”
The Indians will travel to face No. 1 Palmer Ridge Friday. The Tigers will be at Aurora Central on Thursday.
