The CHSAA is excited to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. This year marks the 36th annual celebration and girls and women in sports and is particularly significant, as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
The CHSAA equity committee strongly encourages all schools, administrators, athletes, coaches, officials and everyone involved in Colorado high school sports and activities to celebrate their female members of the community.
“The CHSAA is proud to celebrate this holiday and we recognize that we still have a long way to go until there is complete equity and inclusion in all areas of sports and activities,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bethany Brookens, who oversees the association’s equity committee. “Today, and throughout this year, let’s take a minute to support our women and girls, especially as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX.”
The first comprehensive federal law to prohibit sex discrimination against students and employees of educational institutions, Title IX passed in 1972 and requires educational institutions to maintain policies, practices and programs that do not discriminate against anyone based on sex.
“Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day is something that is very important to Douglas County schools as well as the CHSAA,” CHSAA equity committee chair Derek Chaney said. “We encourage you to recognize and celebrate the female athletes, coaches, and officials in your schools, all across the state.”
This week, NFHS CEO Karissa Niehoff highlights the 36th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The CHSAA encourages its membership to attend the NFHS’s first-ever Better Together: Women and Sports Leadership Virtual Summit on May 1-3.
