State skiing: Summit leads both boys and girls team races after day one

GRANBY – The 2022 Colorado state skiing championships got underway Thursday with the Alpine giant slalom and Nordic skate events.

After the first two events, Summit leads the team race for both the boys and girls. The boys team has 310.5 points, which is just a few points ahead of Battle Mountain (307). The girls team has a wider lead with 335 points. Battle Mountain is in second there as well with 295.

In the girls giant slalom, Summit senior Paige Peterson took the top spot with a total time of 2:12.66. Peterson, who took 12th in the event at last year’s championships, edged out Battle Mountain’s Robin Pavelich who finished with. 2:13.96.

As a team, Summit had three in the top-10 of the race, with sophomore Luci Brady taking seventh, and Senior Victoria Uglyar taking 10th. Evergreen scored the second-most team points after sophomore Lexi Ornstein placed third. Rounding out the top-five were Lake County’s Gwen Ramsey and Platte Canyon’s Hannah Search.

In the boys competition, Durango junior Toby Scarpella turned in the best run time with a 59.97, the only sub-one minute run, and the best overall time with a time of 2:02.20. As a sophomore last season, Scarpella placed third in the event.

The top team in boys giant slalom was Battle Mountain, who had Will Bettenhausen take fourth, Andrew Conley ninth, and Aaron Galehr 11th. Aspen’s David Conners took runner-up with a 2:04.39, while third place belonged to Summit’s Dylan Smith and fifth to Middle Park’s Zackar Niedzwiecki.

Meanwhile on the Nordic slopes, the girls skate winner was Lake County’s Rose Horning, who blew by the competition with a 16:59.1. Her teammate, Ella Bullock, was a distant second with an 18:10.4. Summit placed third and fourth with Sophia Bertonneau and Ella Hagen, respectively. Middle Park’s Sylvia Brower rounded out the top-5. Summit took home the most team points from the event with 170, while Lake County had 162.

For the boys, Eagle Valley’s St. John Ferguson took gold with a 14:33.0. It was a triumph for him after taking silver in both Nordic events last season. He led his team to the most points in the event with 170.

Battle Mountain’s Sullivan Middaugh took second with a 15:14.9, while Vail Mountain’s Cyrus Creasy took third, Lake County’s Jace Peters fourth, and Eagle Valley’s Lukas Bergsten fifth.

The 2022 skiing championships conclude tomorrow with the Alpine slalom and Nordic classic events.
