Montrose football rolls to league opening win over Falcon

The No. 6 Montrose Red Hawks (5-2) hosted Falcon (2-5) in front of another full house Friday night. The Red Hawks won the league opener, 49-6.

The Red Hawks came out firing, as on fourth down, Torrie Eckerman blocked the punt, scooped it up and scored from 15 yards out. The Red Hawks then recovered a Falcon fumble, and Eckerman scored from two yards out to make it 14-0. The Red Hawks led 21-0 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Blake Griffin scored from four yards out and it was all Montrose, 28-0, at halftime.

The Red Hawks got the ball to start the third quarter. They moved right down the field as Gage Wareham passed to Griffin for a 22 yard TD. Griffin then once again scored from six yards out, making it 42-0 after three quarters.

Aidan Grijalva scored from ten yards out, in the fourth quarter to make it 49-0. Je’von Evans returned the ensuing kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown for the lone Falcon score to make the final 49-6.

“Another amazing night of football in Montrose,” head coach Brett Mertens. “I love coaching this team and am very proud of the players and coaches. “We are getting better every week and looking forward to another game next week.”

“We are slowly getting to the accomplishments we want to achieve,” Eckerman added. “We are getting better, but the work is not yet done.”

Montrose will be at Mesa Ridge next Thursday, Oct. 13.
