5A Football: Week 1 Playoff Results

AURORA – Week 1 of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 5A Football Playoffs for the 2023 State Championships are underway. Live scores can be found on MaxPreps and select games will be streamed on the NFHS network.

Friday Results

Friday night’s 5A Football Playoff action got started in Denver and Castle Rock, as No. 13 seed Denver East hosted No. 20 seed Mullen at DPS All-City Stadium and No. 9 seed Castle View hosted No. 24 seed Fossil Ridge at Douglas County Schools Stadium. Castle View defeated Fossil Ridge 35-16 to advance to the second round, where they’ll travel to play No. 8 seed Mountain Vista. Meanwhile, The Denver East Angels toppled the Mullen Mustangs 23-7 to reach the second round, where they’ll take the trip to Colorado Springs to play No. 4 seed Pine Creek.

No. 10 seed Legend hosted No. 23 seed Brighton in their first round matchup at EchoPark Stadium in Parker, and won the game, defeating the Brighton Bulldogs 51-14. They will travel to play No. 7 Valor Christian in the second round. No. 18 seed Fountain Fort-Carson took a road trip up to Recht Field in Boulder and upset No. 15 seed Fairview 42-14 to punch their ticket to the second round, where they will face undefeated No. 2 seed Columbine.

Meanwhile, No. 14 seed Chatfield defeated No. 19 seed Cherokee Trail at JeffCo Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood, by a score of 42-7. They will play No. 3 seed Arapahoe in the second round. No. 17 Legacy upset No. 16 Eaglecrest 28-14, on a road trip to Stutler Bowl in Greenwood Village. They will return to Stutler Bowl next week for their second round matchup with No. 1 seed Cherry Creek.

In the final game of the night, No. 11 seed Grandview won a tight game with No. 22 seed Douglas County 28-21 at Legacy Stadium in Aurora to reach the second round, where they’ll meet No. 6 seed Regis Jesuit.

Thursday Recap

CHSAA’s 5A Football Playoffs kicked off Thursday night at EchoPark Stadium in Parker, as No. 12 seed Rock Canyon played host to No. 21 seed Arvada West. After scoring a touchdown with less than a minute to go in the first half to take a 14-7 lead, the Jaguars never looked back, as they led for the remainder of the game and secured a 20-14 victory to advance.

Rock Canyon will travel to play Ralston Valley’s No. 5 seed Mustangs in the next round.
