Girls Tennis: First Round and Quarterfinals of Individual State Championship Tournament Completed

AURORA – The first two rounds of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Girls Tennis Individual State Championship Tournaments were completed Thursday at Denver City Park, Pueblo City Park Memorial Park, and Cheyenne Mountain High School. The semifinal round will be played tomorrow with the finals set for Saturday. Play will begin at 9 a.m. on both days.

3A Championship

In 1 singles, D’Evelyn freshman Nicole Celechovsky swept Pueblo East’s Ava Andrada (6-2, 6-4) and Vail Christian’s Jessie Allen (6-1, 6-0) to earn her spot in the semifinals. Her opponent will be Lutheran senior Lillie Hendricks, who also swept both of her opponents in the first two rounds, defeating St. Mary’s Academy’s Blair Franciscus (6-2, 6-1) and Peak to Peak’s Lena Crotty (6-4, 6-3).

In the other half of the 1 singles bracket, Dawson School’s Isabelle Jacobsma defeated Isabella Prohs (6-0, 6-2), and Steamboat Springs’ Lucia del Haya (6-1, 6-2) to punch their ticket. Their semifinal round opponent will be Colorado Academy’s Mira Leon, who beat University’s Halle Getting (6-1, 6-3) and St Mary’s Olivia Davalos (6-1, 6-2) to forge her path.

In 2 singles, D’Evelyn’s Evelyn Oltmans will meet Vail Christian’s Juliet Studness in the semifinals. Both athletes reached the semifinals without dropping a set, as Oltmans defeated Wellington’s Ava Essay (6-0, 6-0) and Colorado Academy’s Avia Lauchli (6-1, 6-0), while Studness defeated Pueblo East’s Haley Welte (6-2, 6-4) and Prospect Ridge Academy’s Maya Anderson (6-4, 6-2).

The other side of the 2 singles bracket pits Holy Family junior Annabelle Kenny up against Peak to Peak junior Sydney Lewis in the semifinals. Kenny punched her ticket by defeating both St. Mary’s Academy’s Curry McKinnon (6-2, 6-2) and Lutheran’s Ella Becker (6-4, 6-1) in straight sets. Lewis advanced to the semis with a flawless victory over University’s Hazel Byerly (6-0, 6-0) and a sweep of Timnath’s Sarah Daniels (6-1, 6-2).

In the 3 singles semifinals, D’Evelyn senior Sofia Cieslewicz and Vail Christian sophomore Heidi Iverson will square off. To reach the semifinals, Cieslewicz beat Timnath’s Addyson Wolfe (6-0, 6-4) and St. Mary’s Academy’s Elle Syre (6-0, 6-0), while Iverson advanced past Berthoud’s Addison Kapaun (6-1, 6-0) and Colorado Academy’s Aliza Kirkpatrick (6-2, 6-4).

The opposite side of the 3 singles bracket saw Prospect Ridge Academy’s Shannon Schmidt reach the semifinals with wins over Brush’s Kenna Grippin (6-0, 6-0) and Steamboat Springs’ Dylan Quinn (6-2, 6-3). Her semifinals opponent will be Peak to Peak’s Ranye Ezenekwe, who made it to the semifinals by defeating Canon City’s Rachel Comstock (6-2, 6-0) and Holy Family’s Clara Meisner (6-1, 6-4).

In 1 doubles, Colorado Academy’s Anna Johnson and Violet Tetzeli will play Vail Christian’s Summer Sveum and Sofia Elalayli in one semifinals match. The other side of the bracket will see a semifinals match between Steamboat Springs’ Evan Quinn and Kelsey Norland and Holy Family’s Avery Alderman and Lauren Stonehocker.

In 2 doubles, Vail Christian freshmen Alexa Blanch and Sabrina Nabonsal will play Holy Family seniors Kylie Horning and Sophia Pham for a finals bid. Their finals opponent will be the winner of the semifinal match between Peak to Peak’s tandem of senior Josie Adams and sophomore Molly Kolachov and Colorado Academy’s team of junior Storm Bearley and fellow junior Josie Hicks.

In 3 doubles, Vail Christian’s freshmen Carys Highum and Olivia Zajac will meet Peak to Peak juniors El Allen Bonney and Lhadze Olsen in one of the bracket’s semifinal matches. The bracket’s other semifinal match will be between Eaton juniors Lily Kennedy and Evie Gavette and Holy Family senior Kenna Dietz and junior Raelynn Pickup.

In 4 doubles, Vail Christian’s Linnea Iverson and Grace Armstrong and Peak to Peak’s Abby Fitzgerald and Jolie Sasserville will play for one of the two spots in the championship finals. Their opponent will be the winner of the match between Holy Family’s Olivia Kingsley and Reagan Leary and Colorado Academy’s Emily Archie and Bea Wadsworth
 

4A Championship

In 1 singles, Kent Denver’s Lila Moldenhauer swept Lewis-Palmer’s Juliya Yuzkiv, (6-1, 6-1) and Air Academy’s Haylee Hussmann (6-0, 6-0) to earn her place in the semifinals. Her opponent will be Niwot’s Saha Kolli, who triumphed over Pueblo County’s Megan Fields (6-0, 6-0), and Severance’s Joanna Carter (6-1, 6-2).

In the other half of the 1 singles bracket, Cheyenne Mountain’s Alyssa Sadri will meet Erie’s Nanoha Nakamura. Sadri advanced thanks to a flawless victory against Isabel Stoltz (6-0, 6-0) and a sweep against Discovery Canyon’s Cosette Gaines (6-3, 6-1). Similarly, Nakamura swept both Mountain View’s Rebecca Napolitano (6-1, 6-2) and Mullen’s Lilly Evans (6-4, 6-1) to punch her ticket.

In 2 singles, Cheyenne Mountain sophomore Sophie Zhou swept her first round match with Longmont’s Stella Rulon (6-1, 6-1) and her quarterfinals match with Kent Denver’s Tori Strobos (6-1, 6-2). In the semifinal round, Zhou will play Niwot senior Tracy Yu, who also won both matches in straight sets. Yu defeated Grand Junction Central’s Joey Smith (6-0, 6-1) and Thomas Jefferson’s Lily Mullins (6-2, 6-2).

The other 2 singles semifinal pits Windsor sophomore Zaylee Rose up against Severance senior Ava Zink. Neither player has dropped a set entering the semifinals, with Rose defeating Golden’s Nina Wither (6-2, 6-1) and Mullen’s Claire Lenich (6-2, 6-2), and Zink advancing past George Washington’s Hannah Nguyen (6-3, 6-4) and Denver South’s Laney Pearson (6-1, 7-5).

In the 3 singles semifinals, Cheyenne Mountain’s Rose Katen and George Washington’s Hannah Kenda will compete for a spot in the finals. Katen lost just two games the first two rounds, as she advanced past Longmont’s Addison Engelking (6-0, 6-0) and Air Academy’s Lily Kate Fackelman (6-1, 6-1). Meanwhile, Kenda defeated Grand Junction’s Caysee Calton (6-0, 6-1) and Ponderosa’s Kiera Sheehan (6-4, 6-3) to reach the semis.

The opposite side of the 3 singles bracket boasts a match between Severance senior Erin Crownhart and Mullen junior Anna Lawrence. Crownhart defeated Lewis Palmer’s Madison Dodge (6-1, 6-1) and Grand Junction’s Anara Munkhtogoo (6-1, 6-3) to reach the final four, while Lawrence beat Denver South’s Harper Pederson (6-0, 6-1) and Pueblo County’s Anna Kleven (6-2, 6-3).

In 1 doubles, Kent Denver’s Kendall Adams and Samantha Brenner will face Niwot’s Anne Haley and Samantha Zacky for one spot in the finals. Mullen’s Grace Brouilletee and Clara Dailey will play Cheyenne Mountain’s Jocelyn Kelly and Saffron Heroldt for the other bid.

In 2 doubles, Kent Denver junior Annie Goldmanis and freshman Nora Rapp will play Mullen seniors Avery Walters and Maisie McMorrow in the semifinals. The other semifinal match will have Palmer Ridge junior Kate Ulmer and senior Madison Schoolsky square off with Cheyenne Mountain seniors Daisy Hodsdon and Shea Devanny.

In 3 doubles, Discovery Canyon juniors Lily Gruber and Lauren Sincock will duel Denver South junior Bianca Bryant and freshman Sophie Kuentzler for a trip to the finals. On the other side of the bracket, Kent Denver advanced freshman Claire Bookmyer and sophomore Sophia Begal to the semifinals, where they will play the winner of the match between Mullen’s Grace Jeffers and Charlotte Morse and Severance’s Sienna Henry and Lane Robinson. The 3 doubles match between Mullen and Severance wasn’t completed on Thursday due to a rain halting play. That match will be completed when play restarts on Friday.

In 4 doubles, Kent Denver’s Sasha Berry and Margaux Lively will meet Mullen’s Ali Croci and Alexa Valdez in one semifinal match. The other semifinal bout will be between Erie’s Addie Osborne and Avery Gilbert and Cheyenne Mountain’s Meg Devanny and sophomore Lauren Sharp.
 

5A Championship

In 1 singles, Valor Christian sophomore Caroline Daugherty defeated Legacy’s Macy Black in the first round without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0), and then beat Legend’s Mia Scaife (6-1, 6-1) in straight sets to punch her ticket to the semifinals. Her semifinals opponent, Pine Creek junior Ava Lewis reached the semifinals by sweeping Eaglecrest’s Natali Marshall (6-0, 6-0) and by defeating Ralston Valley’s Ally Lowe in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-2).

In the other half of the 1 singles bracket, Chaparral junior Remy Nguyen and Cherry Creek senior Anika Sharma will play to see who advances to the finals. Nguyen swept Horizon’s Dana Whitney (6-0, 6-3) and Fairview’s Stella Laird (7-6, 6-4) to reach the semifinal round. Sharma earned her spot in the semifinals by defeating both Fossil Ridge’s Sophie Hartman (6-0, 6-2) and Columbine’s Juliette Jaycox (6-1, 6-0) in straight sets.

In 2 singles, Ralston Valley sophomore Emerson Bonner will face Cherry Creek senior Jisele Boker in the semifinals. Bonner reached the semifinal round with a flawless victory over Castle View’s Bradli Brown (6-0, 6-0) and a two-set win over Rock Canyon’s Sanskriti Sinha (6-1, 6-3). Meanwhile, Boker defeated Boulder’s Tessa Botha (6-3, 6-3) and Pine Creek’s Keelin Sills (6-4, 6-2) to advance.

The other 2 singles semifinal will feature Fossil Ridge freshman Irene Cobos and Fairview senior Jane Roth. Cobos managed to reach the semifinals in her first-ever CHSAA state championship tennis tournament with straight-set victories over both Fort Collins’ Taylor Alcaraz (6-0, 6-0) and Heritage’s Abigail Johnson (6-1, 6-4). Roth also advanced to the semifinals without dropping a set, defeating Valor Christian’s Annika Riley (6-0, 6-3) in the first round and Rocky Mountain’s Emma Praver in the quarterfinals (6-0, 6-4).

In the 3 singles semifinals, Ralston Valley sophomore Scarlett Lutz will play Rock Canyon senior Lauren Vick. Lutz dropped only three games in the first two rounds, defeating Fruita Monument’s Kat Austin (6-1, 6-0) and Regis Jesuit’s Otylia Martino (6-1, 6-1) on her way to the semifinal round. Vick swept her first round match with Denver East’s Sophia Massena (6-0, 6-1) and then came back from behind against Valor Christian’s Isabella Vogl (3-6, 7-6, 6-2).

The opposite side of the 3 singles semifinals bracket boasts a match between Cherry Creek sophomore Zoe Hochstadt and Fairview senior Maya Brankhage. Hochstadt was flawless in her first-round match with Arvada West junior Grace Lantz (6-0, 6-0) and won her quarterfinal match against Rocky Mountain’s Ainsley Cunningham in straight sets, (6-1, 6-4). Meanwhile Brankhage had three spotless sets on her route to the semifinal round, defeating Castle View’s Eleanore McGovern (6-0, 6-0) and Fossil Ridge’s Lara Seager (6-2, 6-0).

In 1 doubles, Cherry Creek seniors Sayeesha Garud and Sabrina Shama advanced to set up a semifinal round match with Fossil Ridge seniors Afton Sidwell and Abby Seager. On the other side of the bracket, Valor Christian sophomore Avery Jaggers and junior Sienna DeGhetto will square off against Ralston Valley juniors Adia Farling and Cassidy Gordon for a spot in the finals.

In 2 doubles, Cherry Creek senior Riley Loehr and junior Zoey Hao secured their spot in the semifinals, where their opponent will be Rock Canyon sophomores Megan Knudson and Skylar Smith. The opposite half of the bracket will have Valor Christian senior Sawyer Cruickshank and sophomore Anna Schouten duel with Ralston Valley junior Kylie Engelsman and senior Parker Lucas.

In 3 doubles, Ralston Valley freshman Mataya Farling and sophomore Sofia Elola are set to square off against Fossil Ridge seniors Libby Sollenberger and Bela Lorey. The other end of the bracket will feature Valor Christian senior Claire Pfaff and sophomore Ella Bohling matching up with Cherry Creek senior Joelle Yoon and sophomore Karissa Manley.

In 4 doubles, Cherry Creek seniors Julie Karlburg and Beth Munro will meet Rocky Mountain freshman Neena Wittemyer and senior Izzy Poduska for their semifinal round bout. On the opposing side of the bracket, Valor Christian is sending junior Reese Blanchard and sophomore Sofia Yaron to face Ralston Valley senior Elaina Roboff and freshman Kate Decker.
