AURORA – The Colorado High School Activities Association’s Boys Tennis Individual State Championships continue on Friday with the semifinal round and first and second-round playbacks.
Since the 4A tournament has been condensed to two days, due to forecasted rain in Pueblo, the 4A championship finals and third place matches will begin immediately following the conclusion of today’s second-round playbacks, at approximately 2 p.m., at Pueblo City Park. The 5A championship finals and third-place matches will take place Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Denver Tennis Park.
Thursday’s first day of competition saw the first round and quarterfinal rounds get completed. In 4A, Kent Denver advanced all seven lines to the semifinals, while D’Evelyn advanced six and Colorado Academy advanced five. Grand Junction, Peak to Peak and Vail Christian all advanced two lines, while Cheyenne Mountain, Evergreen, Niwot and Thomas Jefferson advanced one each.
In 5A, Regis Jesuit advanced all seven lines to the semifinals, while Cherry Creek advanced six and Valor Christian advanced four. Fossil Ridge, Grandview and Pine Creek each advanced two, while Arapahoe, Cherokee Trail, Denver East, Fairview and ThunderRidge advanced one each. A live stream will be available for all matches at Denver Tennis Park.
For the first and second-round playbacks, depending on which two players advance through the semifinals to the championship finals, the players that lost to the advancing players will create two playback brackets that will lead to the third-place match. The first round playbacks will feature the two players that lost to one of the finalists in the first and quarterfinal rounds. The winner will advance to the second round playbacks and face the player that lost to that finalist in the semifinals. The winner of the second-round playback will advance to the third-place match to face the winner of the playback bracket from the other championship finalist.
The breakdown of who could advance can be found in the first day recaps:
- 4A semifinalists and potential first-round playback matches
- 5A semifinalists and potential first-round playback matches
Individuals qualified for the state tournament bracket through their performances at regionals. The first-place and second-place finishers from every regional automatically qualified for the state tournament.
