Girls Volleyball: Semifinalist Tickets Punched, State Champions to be Crowned Saturday

DENVER – Throughout the second day of competition at the 2024 Girls Volleyball State Championships, 10 teams across the five classifications have secured its spot in tomorrow’s semifinals, while an additional 20 teams are still alive and looking to clinch the remaining semifinal spots through the contenders bracket.
 
In 5A, No. 2 Valor Christian and No. 5 Fossil Ridge have made the semifinals, while No. 1 Thompson Valley and No. 6 Cheyenne Mountain advanced in 4A. No. 1 Eaton and No. 3 Village will be two of the four semifinalists in 3A, while the 2A bracket is the only one of the five that has advanced its top two seeds through to the semifinals, as No. 1 Simla and No. 2 Sedgwick County have remained undefeated through two days of play. In 1A, No. 1 Merino and No. 3 Fleming have secured semifinal spots.
 
Saturday’s competition will begin with the two third-round consolation games at 8 and 9:30 a.m., with the winners advancing to the semifinals at noon and 2 p.m. The championship games for all five classes are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Class 5A

No. 2 Valor Christian got past No. 3 Mountain Vista, 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-12, 25-11), to secure a spot in the semifinals, while No. 5 Fossil Ridge swept No. 8 Cherry Creek by set scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-20.

Fossil Ridge will play in the first semifinal game at noon, and will face the winner of the third-round consolation game between No. 3 Mountain Vista and No. 4 Legend. That game will be played tomorrow at 8 a.m. With its loss to Valor Christian, Mountain Vista fell to the consolation bracket, while Legend stayed alive by sweeping top-seeded Chaparral (25-14, 27-25, 25-22) in the second-round consolation game.  

Valor Christian will take on the winner of No. 6 Pine Creek vs. No. 8 Cherry Creek at 2 p.m. Cherry Creek fell to the consolation bracket due to its loss to Fossil Ridge, while Pine Creek advanced with a 3-0 win over No. 10 Pueblo West (25-22, 25-18, 25-19). The third-round consolation match between Pine Creek and Cherry Creek will be played at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Class 4A

No. 1 Thompson Valley moved on to the semifinals by sweeping No. 12 Mead, 25-8, 25-8, 25-16, and will next play at noon against the winner of No. 2 Lewis-Palmer and No. 9 Windsor. Windsor advanced to the third-round consolation game by defeating No. 11 Palmer Ridge, 3-1 (25-14, 16-25, 25-21, 25-20) today, while Lewis Palmer fell to No. 6 Cheyenne Mountain. 

The Red-Tailed Hawks continued their hot streak by upsetting No. 2 Lewis-Palmer in five sets (18-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-10) to move on to the semifinal round. Cheyenne Mountain will next face the winner of No. 8 Lutheran vs. No. 12 Mead. With its loss to Thompson Valley, Mead fell to the consolation bracket, while Lutheran advanced by upsetting No. 5 Montrose, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-21) in the second round of the elimination bracket.

Class 3A

No. 1 Eaton and No. 3 Village advanced through the championship bracket to the semifinals, as the two schools swept its competition today. Eaton got past No. 4 Alamosa, 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-17), while Village swept No. 2 Platte Valley (25-22, 25-22, 25-19). 

With its loss, Platte Valley fell to the elimination bracket where it will face No. 8 Sterling at 8 a.m. Sterling advanced to the third-round consolation game as it knocked off No. 12 Centauri, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-16) today.

Alamosa also fell to the consolation bracket where it will face No. 7 Resurrection Christian at 9:30 a.m. Resurrection Christian advanced through the second-round of the consolation bracket by knocking off No. 6 Lamar, 3-1 (31-29, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20). 

The Platte Valley vs. Sterling winner will advance to the noon semifinal where it will face top-seeded Eaton, while the Alamosa vs. Resurrection Christian winner will head to the second semifinal game and face No. 3 Village at 2 p.m.

Class 2A

The 2A bracket it the only bracket where the top-two seeds have secured spots in the semifinals, as No. 1 Simla swept No. 5 Colorado Springs Christian (25-23, 25-18, 25-19) to advance and No. 2 Sedgwick County got past No. 6 Wiggins, 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19). 

Wiggins will look to make its way to the semifinals through the elimination bracket, where it will face No. 9 Haxtun at 8 a.m. The winner of that game will advance to face No. 1 Simla in the semifinals. 

In the second elimination game, No. 5 Colorado Springs Christian will face No. 3 Lyons at 9:30 a.m. The winner of that game will advance to the semifinals to face No. 2 Sedgwick County at 2 p.m. 

Haxtun advanced to the third-round consolation game by knocking off No. 11 Hoehne, 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17), while Lyons knocked off No. 8 Del Norte, 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16).

Class 1A

No. 1 Merino and No. 3 Fleming each swept its opponent today to clinch a spot in tomorrow’s semifinal games. Merino got past McClave (25-18, 25-19, 28-26), while Fleming downed Idalia (25-21, 25-12, 25-17). With the losses, McClave and Idalia fell to the contenders bracket and will look to make its way to the semifinals by winning its third-round consolation games. 

At 8 a.m., Idalia will face No. 11 Briggsdale, with the winner advancing to face No. 1 Merino at noon. In the other third-round consolation game, McClave will face No. 6 Stratton, with the winner taking on No. 3 Fleming in the second semifinal at 2 p.m. 

Briggsdale advanced in the elimination bracket by sweeping No. 10 Cheraw (25-16, 25-21, 25-23), while Stratton got past No. 8 Hi-Plains, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-15).
