Esports: State Championships Resume

AURORA – The CHSAA 2024 Esports State Championships for League of Legends, Rocket League and Splatoon resumed Monday with Rocket League competition.

Prior to Thanksgiving break, the first round of Splatoon competition began, with eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals that are part of the Esports championship day on Tuesday, Dec. 10. 

Both the Rocket League and Splatoon brackets are 16-team single elimination brackets, while eight teams made the League of Legends bracket. The final four teams remaining in League of Legends will advance to Localhost in Lakewood for the in-person final, while the final eight teams will advance to Localhost for Rocket League and Splatoon. 

Quarterfinalists in Splatoon are No. 1 Mountain View Big Swig Express (Drew Plug, Grace Frye, Joe Buck and Owen Lamb), No. 9 The Squidbusters of John F. Kennedy (Deli Tran, Alex Kleinbrink, Tyler Magee and Kaeden Esquibel), No. 4 Chatfield Splatoon Varsity (Josiah Myers, Santi Sagastegui Zapien, Wyatt Dodd and Brycen Hampton), No. 5 Wicked-Fresh Salmon of Ponderosa (Greyson Finkelstein, Shane Cogan, Anna Clark and Hyrum Clark), No. 2 Puddle of Squids of Lakewood (Matthew Bresnahan, Simon Warner, Ari Logan and Kyle Herman), No. 7 Falcon Fresh of Highlands Ranch (Derek Pierce, Emily McMahon, Jude Shaw and Remy Mendez), No. 3 Creek Cephalopod Army of Cherry Creek (Moose Landow, Alex Clift-Willoughby, Ashton Cohen and Zaylix Terhune) and No. 6 DCCHS Splat Varsity of Discovery Canyon (Jace Clawson, Landon Kane, Coleton Tallman and Jonathan Stallworth).

After Monday’s Rocket League competition, the first round of League of Legends takes place on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The winners of all of the first round games will advance to the in-person final at Localhost on Tuesday, Dec. 10. 

The championship day will start with the Rocket League quarterfinals at 9 a.m. The semifinals will begin at approximately 10 a.m., with the finals set for 11 a.m. League of Legends play will begin with the semifinals at 10:30 a.m. and the championship set for 1 p.m., while Splatoon will cap off the day with the quarterfinals beginning at 2 p.m., the semfinals set for 3 p.m. and the finals at 4 p.m. A trophy presentation will take place immediately after each of the individual games’ finals.
