AURORA – On the strength of its five state championships so far this school year, Cherry Creek is currently No. 1 in the country in the MaxPreps Cup rankings following the fall sports season.
Winner of 244 state championships in its history, Cherry Creek picked up titles in football, boys golf, boys soccer, boys tennis, and girls field hockey this fall.
Also ranked in the national top 100 in the MaxPreps Cup rankings through the fall seasons are Mountain Vista (56th), Thompson Valley (71st) and Valor Christian (86th).
The MaxPreps Cup recognizes the top high school sports programs in the nation based on state championships, runner-up finishes and national rankings. Points are awarded based on size of state, popularity of sport, playoff enrollment division and number of teams in each playoff enrollment division. National rankings are compiled by MaxPreps in football, boys and girls soccer, field hockey and volleyball. DyeStat’s national rankings are used for cross country, while HighSchoolGolf.com is used for golf and SwimCloud is used for national swimming rankings.
Cherry Creek has a total of 1,337 points, while Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) is second with 1,153 and Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.) is third at 1,050.
Mountain Vista has 628 points after winning state championships in girls cross country and flag football, Thompson Valley has 590 following state championships in football, boys cross country and girls volleyball, and Valor Christian is at 557 points following a state championship in girls volleyball and a runner-up performance in boys cross country.
