  • All-state football teams for the 2018 season

    The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • Boulder boys hoops tips off season with win over Chatfield

    LITTLETON — Boulder and Chatfield got their seasons officially underway Monday on opening night of the prep basketball regular season in Colorado.

    Boulder used an offensive surge in the start of the fourth quarter to take a 78-69 victory at Chatfield Senior High School. The Panthers (1-0 record) turned a 1-point lead to start the final quarter into a double-digit midway through the fourth quarter.

    “At the start of the game I was kind of nervous, but kind of came into my own and the players did that too,” Boulder’s first-year head coach Riley Grabau said. “They are just a good group of young men who compete. We showed that tonight.”

    Junior Giles Schmid led the way for the Panthers with a game-high 22 points, including going 6-for-7 from 3-point range. Senior Miller Davison (13 points), along with sophomores Alex Rucker (18 points) and Drake Arthur (11 points) were huge in the final quarter as the Panthers took advantage of their size advantage inside on the Chargers (0-1).

    “Just instilling confidence in these guys and making sure they can hit the shot when they shoot it,” said Grabau’s team that scored 51 points in the second half. “When you get pressed I was also taught to get a layup and that is what we did.”

    Chatfield just couldn’t keep pace with Boulder in the fourth quarter. Missing eight free throws in the second half didn’t help the cause either.

    “Defense is definitely our strong suit. We pride ourselves on our press,” Chatfield senior Luke Carlson said. “I think toward the end we just got tired, made mental mistakes and down the stretch our defense let us down.”

    Carlson had a monster third quarter scoring 11 straight points for Chatfield. The senior finished with 20 points.

    “I was just in the right place at the right time,” Carlson said of scoring 11 straight points in a span of just over three minutes to open up the second half.

    Despite foul trouble for the majority of the game, senior Connor Vernon pitched in 12 points. Senior Christian Holmes came off the bench to score 13 points for the Chargers.

    “We are just a little behind,” said Chatfield coach Stephen Schimpeler who started three sophomores in the Chargers’ opener. “There are some things we haven’t worked on our put in yet. That is on me. I’ve got to do a better job.”

    Guard Dylan Carter led the number of sophomores that will get plenty of playing time for Chatfield this season.

    “We need our seniors to step up,” Schimpeler said. “Our sophomores are going to learn by being in the fire. The seniors will help them out, but we’ll go through some growing pains for sure.”

    Monday night was the head coaching debut for one of the recent prep basketball greats from Colorado. Grabau was named Boulder’s head coach just a few weeks ago, taking over for Jack Clarke.

    Grabau helped guided Faith Christian Academy in Arvada to a pair of Class 3A boys basketball state titles in 2008 and 2009. He then transferred to Boulder High School where he guided the Panthers to the 5A title game in 2011.

    He went on to have a successful four-year run at the University of Wyoming. Grabau was a three-year starter and finished his career with 852 points and 237 assists. He played professional in England before returning to Boulder where he was an assistant coach last year.

    “It’s not hard with a game like tonight when we get a W,” Grabau said when asked if it was difficult to coach instead of being on the floor as a player.

  • 5A boys soccer semis: Arapahoe and Grandview to meet for state title

    PARKER — Converting on scoring chances wasn’t working for either Arapahoe or Broomfield in the first Class 5A semifinal match at EchoPark Stadium on Wednesday.

    After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer the eighth seeded Warriors and the defending state champion Eagles took to penalty kicks to determine who would advance to the 5A title game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Friday.

    It took six rounds of kicks for Arapahoe to come away with the 4-3 edge. With the loss, No. 13 Broomfield will miss its first state championship match since 2013.

    The Warriors (16-1-2 overall) were on the attack from the very first whistle, getting the majority of the chances through the first 40 minutes of the game. The best chance came in the ninth minute when a shot ripped past Broomfield keeper Kaden Carson who was out of position off a rebound.

    But his defenders had his back as a kick save kept the match scoreless. Shortly after, Cameron Gail played the ball right in front of the net, but this time Carson was perfectly placed in the box and corralled the shot.

    The script flipped somewhat in the second half as the Eagles (12-7) began to find chances of their own. A hard shot from Mawolo Easton was stopped by Arapahoe keeper Spencer Cobb, who looked to be willing to match Carson’s level of play.

    A free kick for the Warriors gave them one last late chance to break the scoreless tie. Travis Sawyer played the ball into Gail, but the shot went right into Carson’s arms. The Warriors continued to attack in overtime and Gail had yet another chance to end the game. He broke down the field as the ball was played in, but his shot went just wide.

    The teams lined up for penalty kicks and each side scored on their first three chances. Carson got the save on Sawyer’s chance giving the Eagles a chance to take the advantage. But Nathan Dishongh’s was off the mark. Each side missed their next shot and then Liam Anderson buried one to put Arapahoe back up front.

    Cade Austin stepped up for Broomfield and took aim at the right side of the net, but his shot slammed off Cobb’s outstretched hand, sending the Warriors to the ninth title game in program history. Arapahoe has won five state titles, the last coming in 1997.

    After a scoreless first half, Grandview wasted no time in taking the lead over Boulder. The Wolves came away with a 2-0 win to advance to the school’s third boys soccer championship game.

    Ransom Hall found the net in the 50th minute and Jaime Luna padded the lead two minutes later by getting a header just over the reach of Boulder keeper Toby Batemen.

    Rather than pack the backfield and make Boulder press, Grandview (16-1-1) stayed aggressive on the offensive side of the ball. A corner kick with just over 16 minutes left in the second half nearly pushed the lead to three goals, but the header went just over the Boulder net.

    The Panthers (17-2) averaged over three goals per game in 2018, but were unable to find the net.

    The Wolves now get a shot of redemption against Arapahoe. The two teams played back on Sept. 25 with the Warriors getting the 3-2 win.

  • 5A boys tennis: Chatfield’s Christian Holmes takes aim at repeat title

    DENVER — Chatfield’s Christian Holmes is off to a near-flawless start in the Class 5A boys tennis state tournament as he seeks to defend his crown at No. 1 singles.

    Holmes, a senior, opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mountain Vista’s Max Probst in the first round. He then beat Grand Junction’s Cameron Weckerly 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinal to secure a spot in Friday’s semifinals.

    Holmes is seeking to become the first repeat champion at 5A No. 1 singles since Hayden Sabatka of Highlands Ranch did it in 2011 and 2012.

    He will face Arapahoe senior Tyler Landen in the semifinals, which begin at 9 a.m. Landen beat Rock Canyon’s Chris Swanson (6-2, 6-3) and Fairview’s Luke Silverman (6-2, 6-0).

    This is the second consecutive season that Landen has reached the semifinals at No. 1 singles; he was in the quarterfinals as a sophomore.

    Holmes missed the early part of the season after tearing the meniscus in his right knee, but returned to win his regional last week.

    In the other semifinal, Regis Jesuit’s Morgan Schilling will face Cherry Creek’s George Cavo. Both are sophomores.

    Cavo, who finished second at No. 3 singles last season, beat Monarch’s Michael Conde (6-4, 6-3) and Poudre’s Jordan Rickard-Peisner (6-1, 6-2) to reach the semifinals.

    Schilling beat Heritage’s Chase Walters (6-1, 6-3) and Boulder’s Ryan McCoy (6-2, 6-0) to advance. Schilling lost in the playbacks at No. 1 singles last season.

    Schilling led a Regis Jesuit contingent which advanced six of seven positions into the quarterfinals. The Raiders, among the favorites to claim the team crown, are tied for the lead after the first day with 19 points. They last won a state title in 2010.

    Perennial power Cherry Creek also has 19 points to lead the field. Defending champion Fairview sits in third with 12 points.

    Of note, when Lakewood senior Danny Kingman won his first-round match 6-2, 6-2 against Cherokee Trail sophomore Shawn Springer, it was the first time the school had won a state match since 1972.

    Two matches didn’t complete play on Thursday due to rain, and will complete on Friday morning.
