    As the 2019 season is set to begin, the boys soccer preseason rankings were released on Monday.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Battle Mountain, Delta among boys soccer teams with returning state stat leaders

    As the start of the fall season inches closer, it’s fun to take a look at what the 2019-20 school year has in store on the athletic fields.

    The 2018 boys soccer season gave fans plenty of memorable moments that were capped off with championship runs by Arapahoe, Air Academy, Kent Denver and Crested Butte. But past champions aren’t the only things to rehash as the start of official practices looms.

    There were players statewide who put up impressive numbers through the course of the season. A lot of those players are returning and giving fans a good reason to keep an eye on what plays out on the soccer field this fall.

    Overall points:

    Sand Creek’s Jayden Austin blew away the field in total points last year, but the Scorpions lost those staggering numbers to graduation. Across the state, it will be Battle Mountain senior Danny Barajas who returns in 2019 with the most points from last year.

    Barajas scored 68 total points thanks to a combination of 24 goals and 20 assists. Right behind both from an all-classification standpoint, as well as a Class 4A standpoint is Gatorade player of the year Thad Dewing out of Air Academy, who totaled 62 points.

    Last year’s 5A leader in points comes back as Rangeview’s Rashid Seidu-Aroza totaled 60 points.

    Delta’s Martin Corral led 3A with 61 points and will be back for the Panthers this fall. Heritage Christian junior Nagi Williams returns as the 2A leader in points. The top three points leaders from 2A last year all graduated this past spring.

    It’s no surprise to see many of the same names on the points list fall into the category of returning goal scorers. Corral leads all returning players across the state after he scored 28 goals in 2018.

    Seidu-Aroza leads the crop of 5A returners with 27 goals to his name last year. He was matched in 4A by Dewing.

    Ridgway’s Robert Beserra and Heritage Christian’s Williams each scored 22 goals last year to return as the leading scorers in the 2A field.

    Assists:

    Just as important as those scoring goals are those finding the goal scorers. Union Colony Prep junior Isaac Perez finished last year with 21 helpers to rank second in the state in all classes. With two years still play, it’s safe to assume that he’ll continue to place the ball where his forwards can bury it in the back of the net.

    Boulder senior Sam Phillips assisted on 14 goals. It was tied for third in 5A, but those sitting either with him or above him on that leaderboard will not return in 2019. The Panthers advanced to the 5A semifinals last year so having Phillips back is crucial to any state championship hopes.

    Part of the reason Barajas is returning to the pitch with the most points in the state is his ability to find scorers on top of putting the ball in the net on his own. His 20 assists mark the most by a returning 4A player this fall.

    Salida’s Quinn Bosanko matched Barajas’ 20 assists last year. It was good enough to lead all 3A players and he’ll be back for the Spartans this fall.

  • All-state baseball teams for the 2019 season

    The 2019 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

    Player and coach of the year was also selected by a vote of the coaches.

  • 3A baseball: Lutheran, 2-0 in the tournament, is getting hot at the right time

    GREELEY — On a team full of capable hitters, Brody Schneider often leads the way. So when Lutheran watched their senior shortstop crank a two-run homer in the first inning of the Class 3A state baseball tournament, a beauty over the left field fence, the Lions’ other hitters stepped up too.

    They did enough damage in wins over St. Mary’s (6-3) and Resurrection Christian (15-5) to put them in a favorable position heading into Saturday with a 2-0 tournament record. Lutheran will face University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Butch Butler Field in Greeley.

    In a double-elimination playoff, with two losses needed to knock a team out, the winner of that game will be the only remaining 3-0 group in the bracket. Yes, Lutheran is in a good position.

    “It was really important for us to start 2-0,” Schneider said. “We’re getting super hot at the right time and that’s all that matters.”

    How did Schneider, a senior, feel about starting Lutheran’s scoring binge with a home run against St. Mary’s?

    “It was super cool,” he said. “I try to keep level-minded and hit line drives. To put that one out is absolutely awesome.”

    Schneider now has 11 of the team’s 21 homers on the season, while also leading the Lions in batting average (.551 entering Friday) and RBI (45). He spoke humbly after the game, giving plenty of credit to his teammates, but Schneider carries a big stick.

    After Teagan Rae scored on a wild throw in the first inning against Resurrection Christian, the Cougars’ Cooper Strong tied the game at one on a Lutheran error in the third. Schneider, who had an RBI single against St. Mary’s as well, came up with a big play in the bottom of the third.

    Lutheran loaded the bases and then an unusual play occurred. A hard hit ball made contact with the foot of Rez pitcher Zach Cook, and then a throwing error to first base by another infielder allowed all three runners to score. Lutheran led 4-1, but the Cougars responded with RBI hits by Cooper Strong and Cook. The game was tied at four heading into the fourth frame.

    That’s when the Lions really heated up.

    Griffin Webb lined an RBI double. Nick Crandall, Carson James, freshman Dorian Pacheco, and Aaron Morgan also had RBI hits as Lutheran recorded eight consecutive hits in an amazing display of prowess in the batter’s box. The scoreboard read Lutheran 9, Resurrection Christian 4.

    The Lions pushed the lead to 12-5 in the sixth and the game ended one inning early as Nate Nejedlo cleared the bases with a single, then an error by Rez. The Lions are sitting in a good position with a 2-0 record. University, the defending champions, are also 2-0 after claiming wins over Colorado Academy 5-3 and Delta 9-3 at the other 3A site, Butch Butler Field.

    “That was our overall goal,” Lutheran coach Seth Sorensen said. “We needed to get two today. The bats were hot. We got a lot of young guys. For them to go up there and have some intent and some focus, I was just super proud of the way we approached the plate today.”

    Colorado Academy will face Alamosa, who lost 5-4 to Delta, in an elimination game on Saturday. Eaton and St. Mary’s will face off in the other early elimination contest as Resurrection Christian (10-2 winners over Eaton) and Delta are also keeping title hopes alive.

    Sawyer Shepard drove in a pair of runs in the fourth frame of Rez’s win over Eaton, with the help of the glaring sun in the left fielder’s eyes as he wasn’t able to find the ball on a deep fly. Andrew Iwanicki had a sac fly to lift the Cougars’ lead to 6-2. Will Schrotenboer tacked on a sac fly of his own and Ethan Wheeler notched an RBI single to open up an 8-2 margin.

    In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Zach Cook found the outfield grass for a two-RBI single. The Cougars could be very dangerous on Saturday.

  • Delta baseball picks up an extra-inning win over Montrose

    Delta baseball got a walk-off win over Montrose in eight innings on Monday to end its regular season 19-4.

    The Panthers led 5-1 after five innings, but Montrose scored a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. Delta then plated one in the eighth for the win.

    “We knew it was going to be a dog fight,” Delta coach Steve Reiher said. “Landon is a great coach and we knew they would come at us. We came out with a lot of energy. Ryan Cooper did a great job of keeping them off balance today. What we need to improve on is just a some little things that we haven’t been able to, like fly all communications.”

    The Panthers broke out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, including a two-run single from Nolan Bynum. They would go ahead 4-0 after three innings.

    Montrose trailed 5-2 going to the seventh. A two-run single by Dustin Boone in that inning tied the game at five.

    Bynum finished 2-for-2 with three RBIS. Gauge Lockhart and Trevor Myers each went 2-for-3, with Myers scoring three runs. Nathan Workman and Kolby Keller each had an RBI for Delta.

    Lockhart also picked up the win in the mound, pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings. Ryan Cooper, a senior, threw 6 2/3 innings for Delta.

    Montrose senior Dustin Boone was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Trey Schwardtfeger struck out 12 batters on the mound for Montrose in seven innings of work.

    Montrose ends the regular season at 17-6.

  • Baseball rankings: Rye is the new No. 1 in 2A

    Rye has moved up to the No. 1 spot in this week’s Class 2A baseball rankings.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

    Seven new teams hopped into this week’s baseball rankings: Pine Creek (5A), Wheat Ridge (4A), Golden (4A), Colorado Academy (3A), Holyoke (2A) and Prairie (1A).

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

    During the regular season, new polls are released each Monday.

  • Big sixth inning lifts 4A No. 8 Palisade baseball over 3A No. 4 Delta

    Palisade scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to help spark a win over Delta on Thursday.

    The Bulldogs, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A, trailed 3A No. 4 Delta 10-8 heading into the sixth, and then RBIs from Luke Sorensen (on a single) and Brandon Pribble (sac fly) tied the game at 10 with one out.

    Ryder Mancuso followed that with a double to give Palisade the lead at 11-10, Jack Mohler made it 12-10 with a two-out RBI single, and Cody Bellmire plated two more with a single of his own. Then Stevenson Reynolds hit a two-run home run to center field, which made it 16-10. Sorensen added an RBI double to push the lead to 17-10.

    In all, Palisade scored the nine runs on eight hits, two walks and two errors in the inning.

    Sorensen finished with six RBIs, and was 3-for-5.

    Cade Bickham picked up the win, allowed three runs (two earned) in four innings of work.

    Palisade is now 15-5 this season. Delta falls to 13-3.
