    The tournaments for both classifications run Oct. 2-3. Class 5A is held in Aurora, 4A is in Littleton, and 3A is in Lafayette.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Five new teams enter this week’s polls

    Five new teams across the three classifications joined this week’s boys soccer rankings.

    Included: Grand Junction (5A), Far Northeast (5A), Denver North (4A), Eagle Ridge Academy (3A) and Faith Christian (3A).

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

    DENVER — Yanitza Banuelos had three RBIs as Denver North softball beat Denver South 14-12.

    Madison Peerman, Melina Mora and Lauren Castillo each added two RBIs for the Vikings.

  • Football roundup: Greeley West knocks off 3A No. 1 Longmont; game called early due to nearby gas leak

    Greeley West football beat Longmont to move to 2-0 on Thursday night, taking down Class 3A’s top-ranked Trojans.

    The game had a weird ending: It was called with 2:39 remaining after the stadium had to be evacuated, according to the Greeley Tribune, because of a gas leak near the stadium.

    Afterward, Greeley West posted on its Facebook page that “small leak” had been capped.

    “The site is now secure and safe, according to fire authorities,” the school posted. “Sorry for the inconvenience and interruption to tonight’s Greeley West game. The emergency response was quick and safety was secured.”

    This marked the first time since 2009 that Greeley West, which plays in 4A, had beat Longmont. The two teams play annually, and Longmont had won seven-straight games between the two teams.

    Longmont actually led 14-0 in the first quarter before Greeley West rallied to tie the game at halftime.

    The Trojans again took the lead at 20-14 in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored the game’s final 20 points.

    Greeley West’s Derek West had two rushing touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a score, according to the Greeley Tribune.

    The Spartans are now 2-0, while Longmont fell to 1-1.

    3A/4A: Palisade 28, Montrose 27

    The Bulldogs scored 22 second-half points to rally from a 27-6 halftime hole and beat Montrose.

    Montrose, which plays in 4A, jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, but Palisade adjusted after the break. The rally started late in the third, with a rushing touchdown with 4 minutes to play in the frame.

    The Bulldogs, a 3A program, got another rushing score early in the fourth, then took the lead three minutes later on yet another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

    3A: (4) Silver Creek 45, Mountain View 33

    Silver Creek exploded for 22 second-quarter points en route to the 45-33 win over Mountain View.

    Andreik Knechtel and TJ Blazon each accounted for two touchdowns for the Raptors, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. Brandon Harper added a 98-yard kickoff return for a score.

    Notables

    • David O’Connell threw for 196 yards and four touchdowns as Golden beat Littleton 49-0. Colin Mulligan caught two of those touchdown passes.
    • Ho-hum, yet another high-scoring affair: Skyline beat Coronado 70-50. Jeremy Hollingsworth and Moses Rivera each had four touchdowns for Skyline, according to GazettePreps.com.
    • There were five shutouts on Thursday. Aside from Golden over Littleton, Thomas Jefferson beat Pueblo Central 68-0, Cherokee Trail beat Denver East 33-0, Horizon topped Overland 40-0, and Denver North beat Arvada 40-0.

    DENVER — The Denver Prep League played its second match of the year at Kennedy Golf Course and it was Denver East who came away with the win.

    The Angels shot 224 as a team. Thomas Jefferson took second with 235 and Denver North finished third with 252.

    Thomas Jefferson’s Roger Nakagawa claimed the individual with a two-under-par 69.

  • All-state baseball teams for the 2017 season

    The 2017 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

    Player and coach of the year was also selected by a vote of the coaches.

  • State track: Grandview’s Brie Oakley shatters state record in girls 3,200-meter race

    LAKEWOOD — What a way to begin the final Colorado prep meet of your career, Brie Oakley.

    During the opening events of the state track and field championships at Jeffco Stadium on Saturday morning, Oakley shattered the all-classification record in the 3,200 with a winning time of 10 minutes, 9.26 seconds.

    The Grandview senior, a Nike national champion in cross country in December, proved every bit as capable on the track in separating just enough from Fort Collins senior Lauren Gregory (10:16.43, second-fastest in state history) to claim the 5A crown in back-to-back years. The previous Colorado record in the girls 3,200 was 10:17.48 by Niwot’s Elise Cranny in 2014.

    “I feel really great,” Oakley said of the achievement. “That was also a big PR for me, about 14 seconds.”

    The pair of Division I recruits — Oakley signed with the University of California and Gregory with the University of Arkansas — have combined for multiple state championships, state records and national accolades. The tandem pushed each other to historic heights.

    For the first seven of eight laps Gregory tucked in behind Oakley, letting the No. 1 seed do much of the work. The smooth striding senior, a two-time state champion in the event in 2014 and 2015, seemed in perfect position to potentially overtake Oakley.

    But it was Oakley who shifted into a gear Gregory couldn’t match on the final lap. Still, the race was memorable for both competitors.

    “I knew she was going to be right on me,” the new state record holder said. “She’s run a 10:30 this season. I think having her right on my back really helped push me to go even faster than I thought I could.”

    Oakley also ran the anchor leg of a 3,200 relay that finished fourth in 9:28.45. Fairview’s foursome of Sarah King, Hannah Freeman, Isabella Rowland, and Marlena Preigh overtook Broomfield on the final leg to win in 9:13.42. Broomfield was the runner-up in 9:20.92, while Mountain Vista finished third in 9:26.64.

    Grandview girls are off to a substantial lead in the team tally after day one with 70 points, not only winning the 3,200 but also the high jump (junior Kylee Harr at 5 feet, 8 inches). Alisha Davis (5-2) also tied for fourth in high jump for Grandview and Leilah Vigil (40 feet, 9.75 inches) was fourth in shot put.

    The Wolves were impressive in two other relay finals as well; claiming state championships in the 800-meter sprint medley (1:46.57) and 800-meter relay (1:41.12).

    Cherokee Trail (31), Mountain Vista (29), Fort Collins (26), Loveland (21), Rock Canyon (21), and Cherry Creek (21) round out the top teams in the current standings, but Grandview has to feel positive about their chances of winning a first-ever girls state championship in track and field on Sunday.

    In Class 4A, Air Academy’s Maria Mettler (10:47.25) ran away from Denver North’s Kayla Young (10:56.25) and Mountain View’s Lauren Offerman (11:08.24) to claim the 3,200.

    Peak to Peak sophomore Anna Shults the 3,200 title in 3A with a winning 11:15.62. She also claimed the 1,600 crown as a freshman.

    Telluride’s Soleil Gaylord (11:33.16) won the 2A 3,200 and Shining Mountain’s Emma Schaefer (12:24) claimed 1A.

    There were a number of other standout performances on day one of the state meet, including Valor Christian sophomore Anna Hall winning the 4A 300 hurdles in 43.17 seconds and Paonia girls setting a new 2A state record in the 800-meter relay (1:43.95 with Sophia Anderson, Emily Pieper, Brianna Van Vleet, Lyla Hayutin-Baril).

    The Peak to Peak girls 3,200 relay of Tiana Bradfield, Anna Shults, Rachael Metzler, and Quinn McConnell broke the 3A state record of 9:24.95 by The Classical Academy in 2012 with a 9:12.44.

    Lutheran junior Maya Evans won the 3A 200-meter dash (24.35) and long jump (3A state meet record of 19-5.25). Eaton senior Tarynn Sieg broke her own 3A state meet record in the shot put with a mark of 45-5.50. D’Evelyn senior Sarah Cerrone broke the 3A state meet record in high jump with a mark of 5-7.50.

    Denver East sophomore phenom Arria Minor put away the 5A field in the 200-meter dash with a blistering 23.57, while Niwot junior Mary Gillett was the 4A champion in 24.83. She placed second in long jump behind only teammate Alexis Carroll.

    Isaac Green leads the way for Monarch

    As for the top-flight boys competitors on Saturday, Monarch swept the 5A top three places in the 3,200 with Isaac Green (9:26), Charlie Perry (9:27) and Zach Litoff (9:31). Green and Litoff teamed with William Dixon and Sean Gazarick (7:50.04) to dominate the 3,200 relay as well.

    Monarch and Fountain-Fort Carson (Donovan Williams first in 200 in 21.63, Jason Farrell third in 300 hurdles in 38.89, Jequan Hogan first in triple jump at 50 feet, 7.25 inches, second place in 800-meter relay) are in a battle in the 5A team competition.

    Hogan, a junior, gave his team a major boost with one of the top triple jump marks in Colorado history on his fourth and final jump. Hogan actually scratched his first two jumps, but leaped 49 feet, 7 inches on his third attempt. Fruita Monument senior Gunner Rigsby (49-00.50) was the runner-up.

    “After they said that second jump was a foul, I was kind of mad,” Hogan admitted. “I was kind of angry and I think it helped me jump a little harder and push a little harder. I picked it up and jumped a 50.”

    Hinkley also had a promising first day as senior Darrien Wells (runner-up in 200) and junior Angel Heredia (now two-time state champion in 300 hurdles) were two legs of an 800-meter relay that nipped Fountain-Fort Carson 1:27.25-1:27.43 for the 5A crown.

    Veterans like Montrose’s Ian Meek (4A 3200 champion in 9:23) and The Classical Academy’s Tanner Norman (9:14.45 for 3A state meet record) were distance stars again. Montrose (7:58.93) held off Silver Creek (7:59.56) in an entertaining 4A 3,200 relay.

    Mountain View’s Nolan Kembel (37.94) claimed the 4A 300 hurdles and Pueblo West’s Frank Nash (23-6.25) won the 4A long jump. Lutheran’s Jacob Dack (shot put) and Adam Dawson (203-1 in discus) swept the throws in 3A.

    The final day of the state track and field meet at Jeffco Stadium will begin with field events at 8:00 a.m. and track events at 9:00 a.m.

  • Baseball regional tournament brackets released in 5A, 4A, 3A

    AURORA — The baseball regional tournament brackets for Class 5A, 4A and 3A were released on Wednesday.

    Cherry Creek, Denver North and Lamar are the top seeds in their respective classes.

    Cherry Creek claims top overall seed in 5A

    Cherry Creek edged out Legend to claim the top overall seed in 5A. The Bruins (14-5) got back on track after a two-game skid just in time for the state tournament.

    No. 2 Legend will host Region 5 which includes No. 31 Pomona, No. 19 Grand Junction Central and No. 18 Fairview.

    Last year’s runner-up Rocky Mountain comes in at No. 4. The Lobos won’t be seeing the team that won the title over them as defending champion Cherokee Trail did not make the postseason.

    No. 3 Mountain Vista will play host in Region 7.

    No. 5 Rock Canyon gets Grandview in the first round in Region 4. No. 12 Heritage and No. 21 Grand Junction are on the other side of the bracket. 

    Mountain Range grabbed the No. 6 spot and will host Region 8.

    No. 7 Regis Jesuit and No. 10 Broomfield are set up for a potential matchup in Region 6 if they can get past No. 26 Loveland and No. 23 Arapahoe, respectively.

    Legacy is the final regional host at No. 8.

    Denver North on top in 4A

    Denver North is on top in 4A after capping an undefeated regular season. The Vikings went 18-1 in the regular season last year, before losing to Niwot in district play.

    The Vikings are out to learn from last year’s failure and turn it into success this year.

    Defending champion Valor Christian and runner-up Pueblo West will both host. The No. 3 Eagles will host Region 7, while the No. 6 Cyclones will host Region 8.

    No. 2 Windsor (17-2) is the Region 5 host. Also in the bracket are No. 31 Wheat Ridge, No. 15 Summit and No. 18 Thomas Jefferson.

    Evergreen, Fort Morgan and Pueblo East will be making the trek out to No. 4 Palisade as the Bulldogs earned a host spot.

    Air Academy came in at No. 5 and will face Rifle in its first round matchup.

    No. 7 Silver Creek and No. 8 Canon City make up the rest of the regional hosts.

    Lamar grabs top spot in 3A

    Winners of 17 straight games, Lamar baseball grabbed the top overall seed in the Class 3A baseball regional tournament.

    Lamar beat 2016 runner-up Manitou Springs 9-8 in extra innings in its last game of the season.

    The Mustangs are in Region 5, hosted by Lutheran — the No. 2 overall seed.

    No. 3 University will host Region 7 that includes defending champion Faith Christian and The Academy. The Bulldogs will face Kent Denver in the first game.

    La Junta and Peak to Peak are the No. 4 and 5 seed, respectively. 

    Delta came in at No. 6, earning a Region 4 host. The Panthers are on an 11-game win streak. 

    Bayfield is the No. 7 seed and Region 6 host. Resurrection Christian faces Salida, while Bayfield gets Denver Science & Tech: Stapleton.

    Bennett (14-4) rounds out the top eight seeds. The Tigers are a strong No. 8 seed, with No. 9 Colorado Academy on the other side of their bracket.

    DENVER — Denver North baseball, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, beat Denver East 5-2 on Thursday to finish its regular season 19-0. The Vikings won the Denver Prep League title in the process.
