Jeffco Preps With Pleuss is a monthly roundup of Jeffco prep highlights hosted by Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ sports information director. This month’s edition features the girls swimming state championship at VMAC in Thornton. Evergreen captured another Class 3A team title. Ralston Valley diver Izzy Gregersen won the 5A diving state championship and Chatfield junior Kathryn Shanley swam to two individual titles. Ralston Valley and Columbine locked up in a big Class 5A Jeffco boys basketball game that came down to the wire. Before the postseason started, Wheat Ridge took a non-league victory over Bear Creek on the hardwood. Green Mountain’s girls basketball continued its historic season. The big National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Feb. 5 was celebrated by several Jeffco schools.

  • Girls basketball playoff roundup: Pine Creek upsets Grand Junction Central

Hitting the road isn’t always a sign of impending doom when it comes to basketball playoffs. That certainly turned out to be the case for Pine Creek as it made its way west on I-70 for the first round of the Class 5A girls basketball state tournament.

The Eagles entered the tournament as the 39 seed, but it didn’t deter them as they left the western side of Colorado with a 29-26 win over Grand Junction Central. They’ll stay a little closer to home on Saturday when they head to Arvada to take on No. 7 Ralston Valley.

Pine Creek jumped out to a 20-8 lead at halftime but the offense quickly slowed down in the second half. Leah Redding knocked down a big 3-pointer for Central early in the fourth quarter to cut the Eagles’ lead to eight points.

Pine Creek made its way to the free throw line where Brynae Stewart made two and Jordyn Gutierrez made one to keep the game just out of Central’s reach.

Fairview’s Izzy Munson led all scorers with 19 points as the Knights battled back from a five-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter. They’ll meet Denver South in the second round.

Leaya Mckinney and Alexa Barkeen each scored 11 for the Sabercats.

    (37) Brighton 63, (28) Mountain Range 53

The Bulldogs were one of just three lower-seeded teams to get wins in the first round. Their win over Mountain Range puts them in the second round where they’ll travel to Fruita Monument.

    (36) Arvada West 48, (29) Loveland 38

Arvada West’s first round win sets up a matchup with Grandview in the second round.

    Other 5A scores:

    • (30) Liberty 48, (35) Greeley West 38

No. 37 Longmont upsets No. 28 D’Evelyn in first-round thriller

Jordynn Lee scored 17 points to lead Longmont to a first-round upset win over D’Evelyn. The Trojans advance to the second round of the 4A tournament where they’ll see a familiar foe in Erie.

Longmont opened the season with a 56-42 loss to the Tigers and now get a chance at redemption.

Emmelia Ashton added 13 points in Longmont’s winning effort on Tuesday.

    (19) Skyview 39, (46) Coronado 36

Jordan Gonzales knocked down a big 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter as Skyline held off a persistent Coronado team. The Cougars trailed by one entering the fourth quarter but Fatinah Muhammed made two key buckets to put them up by five.

But the Wolverines battled back to avoid the upset and stay alive in tournament play.

    (23) Palmer Ridge 38, (42) Pueblo East 36

Eden Bonser led all scorers with 17 points as the Bears grabbed a narrow win over the Eagles. They won’t travel far for their next game as they’ll take on league rival Air Academy on Friday.

Jaylene Escajeda led Pueblo East with 11 points.

    (34) Littleton 58, (31) Denver West 44

Ava Youngblood-Yazzi and Jasmyn Thompson-Harvey each scored 12 points as the Lions were one of just two lower-seeded teams to get a win in Tuesday’s slate of games.

    Other 4A scores:

    • (30) Pueblo County 36, (35) Standley Lake 31
    • (21) Lewis-Palmer 54, (44) Widefield 50
    • (32) Centaurus 43, (33) Pueblo South 33
  • No. 9 Golden boys basketball stays atop 4A Jeffco with win over D’Evelyn

GOLDEN — Alan Acevedo is making his mark on the hardwood during his freshman campaign at Golden High School.

Wednesday night was another example of how key the freshman has been for the Demons — No. 9 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A boys basketball rankings. Acevedo came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points and grab seven rebounds in Golden’s 58-53 home victory over D’Evelyn.

“I just want help the team,” Acevedo said. “I don’t really care about points. I care about the family and team.”

The victory kept Golden (11-6, 5-1) atop the 4A Jeffco League standings with rival Wheat Ridge (9-6, 5-1). Green Mountain (11-4, 4-2) is one game back. D’Evelyn (7-10, 3-3) is still within striking distance, but Jaguars’ coach Dan Zinn knows getting better and preparing for the playoffs is a primary focus.

“We are still going to battle every game and see where the chips fall,” Zinn said of the league title. “But at the same time we know there is a state tournament that we will be apart of and we want to get ready for that as well.”

D’Evelyn held a 29-28 halftime lead on the road against Golden, but the Demons turned the tide in the third quarter. After 15 points in the first half, Acevedo stayed hot. The freshman’s 3-pointer with 2:30 left in the third quarter gave Golden the lead for good at 38-37.

A 14–3 run extend the lead to double-digits midway through the fourth quarter.

“Second half we talked about just keeping our guy in front of us and play some good half-court man defense,” Golden coach Lou Vullo said. “We picked it up with our energy when we starting playing our 1-3-1 and trapping them at half-court. I think that is when we turned it around a little bit.”

Senior Ben McLaughlin hit a big 3-pointer during the Demons’ run in the fourth quarter. Fellow senior Jack Anderson had a field goal and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to reach 10 points on the night.

“We feel like we are deep,” Vullo said of his team that had eight players score on the night. “If someone isn’t producing one night someone else will step in and help us out. We are fortunate to have that.”

D’Evelyn senior Sam Belmonte (4) tries to work inside on Golden freshman Alan Acevedo and senior Kevin Mulligan. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

D’Evelyn senior Sandy Dinegar (11 points) and junior Kase Sundarapura (10 points) were he lone Jaguars to reach double-digit points in the loss.

“Our defensively intensity was there all night,” Zinn said. “Our energy was there, but when you can’t make baskets it is tough to win basketball games.”

Wednesday night marked the midway-point through 4A Jeffco League play. All seven teams in the competitive conference have played six of the dozen league games on the schedule. Going into Wednesday’s action, only Standley Lake was outside the top-48 in RPI that qualify for the state tournament.

“This league is tough. We play Littleton on Friday and they are a scary team,” Vullo said. “At the end of the day there could be five of us who go to the state tournament.”

Golden has road games coming up against Littleton (Friday, Jan. 31) and Standley Lake (Feb. 5) before heading into the home stretch of conference play.

D’Evelyn remains on the road with games against Evergreen (Friday, Jan. 31) and Green Mountain (Feb. 5).

  • D’Evelyn boys hoops upsets No. 10 Green Mountain in OT thriller

DENVER — D’Evelyn’s boys basketball team might have had the win Wednesday night to jumpstart its season.

The Jaguars (5-8, 2-1 in Class 4A Jeffco League) upset No. 10 ranked Green Mountain in an overtime thriller at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School. D’Evelyn was able to pull away in overtime to grab a 68-62 victory.

“I’ve been waiting for this team to show up and put it all together,” D’Evelyn coach Dan Zinn said. “It wasn’t all together today, but we were a heck of a lot closer than we’ve been. On both ends of the court we were getting done what we wanted to get accomplished.”

Senior Sandy Dinegar (23 points) and junior Luke Kjellsen (22 points) carried the offensive load for the Jaguars. D’Evelyn held a double-digit lead midway through the second quarter thanks to Dinegar’s 14 points before halftime.

“They both are playing well,” Zinn said of Dinegar and Kjellsen. “Both have multiple facets to their game that makes it hard for them to be stopped.”

Kjellsen did most of his damage in the second half. The junior’s 3-pointer early in the third quarter gave the Jaguars the lead back after Green Mountain (8-4, 1-2) went on a 12-0 run.

“Green Mountain is a really good team,” Zinn said. “We had the first-quarter run, but basketball is a game of runs. We were able to withstand their run.”

The Rams had the ball in the final seconds of the fourth quarter with a chance to win it in regulation. However, an acrobatic driving shot by freshman Jaylin Hardwrict (16 points) didn’t fall and the put-back attempt by senior Matt Schlieper didn’t drop in.

“We have to finish,” Green Mountain coach Mike Puccio said. “There was a lot missed at the rim tonight.”

It was all Jaguars in the overtime period. D’Evelyn made just one field goal, but was 9-for-10 from the free-throw line to close out the win. Kjellsen finished 13-of-16 from the free-throw line, all in the second half.

“I had a rough beginning the season with free throws. I was shooting something like 40 percent,” Kjellsen said. “I knew if we were going to win big games we had to make free throws.”

D’Evelyn students there were in attendance rushed the court to celebrate with its players after the big conference win.

“We’ve had a rough go of it. I think our effort was kind of lacking,” Kjellsen said of the 4-8 record coming into Wednesday’s game. “Tonight I think we showed as a team that we can play four quarters of basketball hard and we can beat anybody.”

Green Mountain has dropped 3-of-4 games since Winter Break. Junior guard Darius Padilla has been out with a health issue for all three of the Rams’ losses since the start of the new year, which has contributed to the Rams’ turnover problems. Green Mountain turned the ball over 27 times against D’Evelyn.

“We miss him,” Puccio said of Padilla. “But it’s got to be next man up. You can’t just stop winning games because Padilla is out. He does bring a lot for us, but it’s got to be next man up.”

D’Evelyn junior Luke Kjellsen (43) takes the ball strong to the hoop Wednesday on Green Mountain junior Dylan Green (32). Kjellsen poured in 22 points, including going 13-for-16 from the free-throw line in the second half to help the Jaguars to a 68-62 overtime win over the Rams. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

  • D’Evelyn girls hoops ready for league play after win over Summit

DENVER — D’Evelyn girls basketball will begin Class 4A Jeffco League play tomorrow coming off a winning note.

The Jaguars (7-4 record) defeated visiting Summit 60-32 on Tuesday night, on the eve of the start of conference play for D’Evelyn.

“We said that our league started tonight,” D’Evelyn coach Chris Olson said after the Jaguars ended their 2-game losing streak. “All of our (league) game are going to be pretty good games. It should be competitive every night.”

D’Evelyn sophomore Chloe Klataske, middle, drives on Summit’s Sarah Pappas (5) and Nicole Kimball (2) during the first quarter Tuesday night. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

The non-league game Tuesday was actually the conclusion of the Jeffco Jungle Jam Tournament that started back on Dec. 11. A snowstorm prevented Summit to get down to the Metro Area for a scheduled game during the tournament, so the game was rescheduled right before the Jaguars start conference play.

“We are all excited,” D’Evelyn senior Rylee Waggoner said of getting into league play. “A lot of players haven’t experienced this league varsity level.”

D’Evelyn travels to Evergreen High School on Wednesday night to face the defending 4A Jeffco League champs — Evergreen Cougars (4-2).

It was a three-team race last season for the conference title. Evergreen, Green Mountain and D’Evelyn combined for a 30-6 mark in league play, leaving the rest of the field in their wake. The Cougars eventually finished a game ahead of the Rams to capture the league title.

“It’s definitely nice to start league with one of our tougher games,” Waggoner said of facing Evergreen to start the 12-game conference schedule that features home-and-away meeting for all seven teams in the league. “There are no easy teams in the league at all. We are all going to compete.”

Green Mountain — ranked No. 7 in the latest CHSAANow.com Class 4A girls basketball poll — looks to be the front-runner this season after getting out to a 8-1 non-league record. The Rams open their conference schedule tomorrow night at home against an improved Wheat Ridge (5-2) squad.

Olson believes that Green Mountain and Evergreen will be the teams to beat in the historically tough 4A Jeffco League.

D’Evelyn junior Megan Stein, left, goes up for a shot over Summit senior Anna Tomlinson (32) on Tuesday night. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

D’Evelyn was tough in the opening minutes against Summit. A 3-pointer by sophomore Maddie Topping midway through the first quarter gave the Jaguars a 13-0 lead.

“She (Topping) is one of those kids that last year we wanted to play a little bit more, but development wise we just let her play JV,” Olson said. “We knew this year that she would start right from the beginning. She can shoot the 3. She can drive. She is a pretty good defender. She is just going to keep getting better.”

The Jaguars’ pressure defense early was key. Senior Peyton Balbin scored seven points in the first three minutes all off of turnovers created by D’Evelyn’s full-court pressure.

“We don’t have that height anymore, so we are going to have to depend on our defense to make our offense,” Waggoner said. “That full-court press we do a lot of a time it kills teams. We just have to all work together.”

D’Evelyn offense really got going in the second half. The Jaguars poured in 38 points after halftime to nearly double-up Summit. Ten different players scored for D’Evelyn, including junior Lexi Szathmary.

Szathmary had missed a few games due to an ankle injury, but got some spot time against Summit. She is the Jaguars’ leading scorer, but will get a chance to get back to near 100 percent hopefully with D’Evelyn having a week off after its league opener against Evergreen.

The Jaguars finished with nine 3-pointers on the night, but Olson knows success will come with defense this season.

“One of the things we’ve learned from the preseason is everything for us is going to be defense driven,” Olson said. “That is how we create good shots. When we’ve struggle to score we aren’t turning teams over and not forcing tempo.”

D’Evelyn senior Peyton Balbin, left, takes it strong to the basket during the Jaguars’ opening 13-0 run to start the game Tuesday night against Summit. The Jaguars never trailed in the 60-32 victory. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)
