  • Three new teams join 4A baseball rankings

Things got a bit crazy when this week’s Class 4A baseball poll was released.

Three new teams — Pueblo West, Pueblo East and Mountain View — joined CHSAANow.com’s ranking after going unranked in the preseason.

Pueblo West jumped all the way up to No. 3 following its 4-0 start which includs a win over then-No. 4 Palmer Ridge, as well as an impressive showing at a tournament in New Mexico.

Pueblo East is No. 5 this week, while Mountain View is No. 8.

Green Mountain remained No. 1 in the 4A poll. In fact, none of the No. 1s changed from the preseason, meaning Regis Jesuit (5A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Dove Creek (1A) all held firm.

In 5A, Columbine joined the poll at No. 9. They were the lone newcomer to that ranking.

The 3A poll added La Junta (No. 10), while Dayspring Christian (No. 9) and Dolores (No. 10) are new to 2A. 1A added No. 9 Springfield and No. 10 Fleming.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

Defending champions and teams that lost in last season’s title games make up the preseason No. 1 teams in baseball this season.

Heading their respective classifications in the CHSAANow.com polls are Regis Jesuit (5A), Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Dove Creek (1A).

Green Mountan and Resurrection Christian are defending champions, while Regis, Eaton and Dove Creek were all runners-up last season.

The 5A poll was the most split, with six different teams getting first-place votes.

Regis led the way with five first-place votes and 126 total points. Rocky Mountain, the defending champion, also got five first-place votes, but totalled 114 points.

Cherry Creek, another team to get a first-place vote, opens the year at No. 3. Legend (No. 4), Fairview (No. 5) and Chatfield (No. 9) also received at least one first-place vote.

ThunderRidge is sixth in 5A’s preseason poll, and is followed by No. 7 Dakota Ridge and No. 8 Grandview. Mountan Vista rounds out the poll at No. 10.

In 4A, Green Mountain was a unanimous selection with all 10 first-place votes. Montrose is No. 2, followed by Valor Christian, Palmer Ridge and Lewis-Palmer. Holy Family, last season’s 3A champion which has moved up to 4A, begins at No. 10.

Eaton heads 3A’s poll, and is also a unanimous pick with all 10 first-place votes.

Resurrection Christian received eight of the nine first-place votes to lead 2A. Caliche, last year’s 1A champ, is now in 2A but is unranked to begin the year.

Dove Creek received seven of the eight first-place votes to top 1A’s preseason ranking.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Playoff football roundup: Gunnison slips Sterling’s upset bid in 2A

It came down to a fourth-down conversion in overtime, then an extra point, but Gunnison survived.

No. 12-seeded Sterling pushed the No. 5 Cowboys to overtime on Saturday afternoon in the Class 2A football playoffs.

Tied at 22 at the end of regulation, Sterling scored on its possession in overtime, but went for two points and didn’t convert.

When it got the ball, Gunnison quickly faced a third-and-10. Gunnison quarterback Jake Wallin scrambled to the 1-yard-line to set up a 4th-and-1. The next play, running back Brady Wilson scored. The Cowboys then kicked the extra point to take a 29-28 win.

“It’s playoffs. A win is a win,” Wallin told the Gunnison Country Times afterward. “It doesn’t matter what the score is. If you win, you go on, if you lose, you’re taking your pads off for good. We’re excited to play another week.”

Gunnison advances to play Eaton, the No. 13 seed which upset No. 4 Lamar 41-20 on Saturday.

Eaton led 26-7 at halftime in that game. Lamar cut it to 26-14 with a score early in the third quarter, but Eaton pulled away with a 15-point fourth quarter.

    Elsewhere in 2A:

    • No. 1 Brush rolled over No. 16 Moffat County 49-7. Brush will face No. 8 Faith Christian, which beat No. 9 Bayfield on Saturday.
    • No. 3 Strasburg handled No. 6 Florence 48-6. Strasburg scored on six of its first seven possessions, according to the Canon City Daily Record.
    • Platte Valley, seeded No. 6, beat No. 11 Bennett 30-15. It will face Strasburg in the quarterfinals.
    • No. 2 seed Kent Denver took care of No. 15 La Junta, 58-14. The Sun Devils will face No. 7 Montezuma-Cortez, which won a wild game on Friday night.

    Notables

    • No. 9 Platte Canyon pulled off the lone upset in the 1A playoffs, beating No. 8 Wray on the road, 30-14. It will play defending champion Paonia in the quarterfinals. Paonia, the top seed, beat No. 16 Wiggins 49-0.
    • In 8-man, No. 8 Vail Christian held off  No. 9 Merino to win 38-34. Merino led this one 14-0 early before Vail Christian rallied to take a 24-20 halftime lead. Merino went back up 28-24, but Vail Christian grabbed the lead for good with a touchdown late in the third quarter. The Saints draw top-seeded Dayspring Christian, which is also the defending champion.
    • 6-man‘s semifinals are set: No. 1 Arickaree/Woodlin will host No. 4 Fleming, while No. 3 Peetz will be at No. 2 Eads.
    • Higher-seeded teams went a combined 25-3 in the first rounds of the 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man playoffs.

    CHSAA regional seeding/pairing procedure

    1. All league champions will automatically earn a berth to regionals.

    2. The remaining teams (up to 36) will be selected based on the MaxPreps Rankings published at the end of the regular season.

    3. Teams will then be seeded on the CHSAA regional seeding criteria:

    • The MaxPreps rankings will be the primary consideration
    • The CHSAA Seeding Committee will only make changes based on splitting up league opponents and geographical considerations (if and when possible)

    4. Teams seeded Nos. 1-12 will host regionals.

    5. All regional winners will automatically advance to the state champions

AURORA — Grandview, Ralston Valley, Pomona and Cherry Creek all got No. 1 seeds when the Class 5A football bracket was released on Sunday.

All four teams are the top seeds in their respective quadrants — which is a new format for this season. The classification kept a 32-team bracket, but instead of seeding teams Nos. 1-32, the seeding committee seeded four quadrants with Nos. 1-8 apiece.

The seeding committee is also a new addition this season. Previously, the 32-team bracket was set strictly by Wild Card points standings, with a few changes up or down one seed to avoid league matchups. This year, the 32 qualifiers were again set by the Wild Card points — which were released on Sunday morning — but the committee true-seeded the field based on a number of different criteria, including head-to-head, and an RPI ranking system.

No. 2 seeds include Rocky Mountain, Fairview, Valor Christian and Regis Jesuit. No. 3s are Fountain-Fort Carson, Overland, Mountain Vista and Doherty.

Among first-round matchups are No. 4 Prairie View vs. No. 5 Lakewood, No. 3 Mountain Vista vs. No. 6 Cherokee Trail, No. 4 Legacy vs. No. 5 Eaglecrest, and No. 3 Doherty vs. No. 6 Heritage.

Valor Christian is the defending champion, having won five consecutive titles over three classifications.

Teams can begin play this weekend. The semifinals are the weekend of Nov. 22 at home sites, with the championship No. 29 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The full 5A bracket can be found here.

The 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man brackets also came out on Sunday.

2A’s top seed is Brush, which will faces Moffat County in the first round. No. 2 is Kent Denver, No. 3 is Strasburg and No. 4 is Lamar. Also hosting first-round games are No. 5 Gunnison, No. 6 Platte Valley, No. 7 Montezuma-Cortez and No. 8 Faith Christian.

Platte Valley is the defending champion.

See the full 16-team 2A bracket here.

In 1A, Paonia earned the top seed. The defending champion will host No. 16 Wiggins in the first round of the 16-team playoff.

Other hosts in 1A include No. 2 Buena Vista, No. 3 Meeker, No. 4 Resurrection Christian, No. 5 Centauri, No. 6 Rye, No. 7 Crowley County and No. 8 Wray.

See the entire 1A bracket here.

Dayspring Christian, also a defending champion, nabbed the top seed in 8-man. It will host No. 16 Elbert to kick off its title defense.

    Arickaree/Woodlin Stratton/Liberty football
Arickaree/Woodlin is the No. 1 seed in 6-man. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

No. 2 Norwood, No. 3 Caliche, No. 4 Granada, No. 5 Akron, No. 6 Sangre de Cristo, No. 7 Simla and No. 8 Vail Christian will also host games in the first round of the 16-team field.

Find the full 8-man bracket here.

In 6-man, Arickaree/Woodlin is the top seed of the eight-team field. It plays No. 8 North Park in the first round.

Other teams hosting games in the first round include No. 2 Eads, No. 3 Peetz and No. 4 Fleming.

Defending champion Stratton/Liberty did not make the eight-team field.

See the entire 6-man bracket here.

The 2A, 1A and 8-man championship games are No. 22. 6-man’s title game is Nov. 15.

  • Grandview nabs No. 1 ranking after 5A football poll shaken up

Grandview, now 8-0, is the new No. 1 team in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A football rankings this week.

The Wolves took over the top spot previously occupied by Valor Christian, which lost an in-state game for the first time in 28 outings on Friday when then-No. 9 Cherry Creek upset the Eagles 33-17.

Grandview is unbeaten to this point in the rugged Centennial League, and beat Cherry Creek in Week 7. It topped a very solid Overland team 53-13 last Thursday.

    But it wasn’t a clear-cut, unanimous vote.

Ralston Valley also had a good claim to the top ranking. The Mustangs are 8-0, too, and won a monster game over then-No. 3 Pomona on Friday. They settled into the No. 2 spot this week, just 10 overall points behind Grandview.

Grandview received 10 first-place votes; Ralston Valley got five.

Meanwhile, Fairview moved up two places to No. 3 after escaping an upset bid from Fossil Ridge.

Pomona dropped one spot to fourth, Cherry Creek rocketed up from No. 9 to No. 5, and Valor fell all the way to sixth. Regis Jesuit is seventh, dropping one place despite a good win over then-No. 7 Mountain Vista.

Rocky Mountain remained at No. 8, Mountain Vista fell to No. 9 and Doherty rejoined the 5A poll at No. 10.

Speaking to the uncertainty in the 5A ranking at the moment, spots Nos. 4-7 are separated by a mere five points. Things could get much more clouded — Valor Christian and Grandview play in their regular season finale on Friday.

In the other six classificatoins, none of the top-ranked teams were displaced. It means Pine Creek (4A), Discovery Canyon (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Arickaree/Woodlin (6-man) stayed on top.

There were no newcomers in the 4A ranking this week, though 3A added Palisade (No. 10), and St. Mary’s (No. 9). Eaton (No. 10) joined the 2A poll. 1A added Crowley County (No. 10), and North Park joined 6-man’s ranking at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.
