WHEAT RIDGE — It was all about being aggressive and not wasting time on the mat Thursday night at Wheat Ridge High School.

Jefferson, Class 3A’s No. 5 ranked team in the current On the Mat rankings by Tim Yount, defeated Wheat Ridge 48-36 on the Farmers’ home mat. The dual ran a total of 32 minutes thanks to some aggressive wrestling on both sides.

“It’s that time of year. You have to get after it,” Jefferson coach Oscar Fonseca said. “There is no time for holding back.”

While there were five total forfeits — three by Jefferson and two by Wheat Ridge — the remaining nine matches ended all with pins. Not a single match even got into the third period.

“For our side, it’s just being young and inexperienced,” Wheat Ridge coach Dave Osse said of the quick matches. “We are excited and want to get into the match. Sometime we get the (early) takedown, but sometimes we are so excited we put ourselves in a bad situation.”

Jefferson’s Cruz Ortega (106), Kyle Cisneros (132), Nick Gallegos (138), Brandon Onofre (152), Giovanni Lopez (170) and Oscar Lopez (220) were all victorious by pin for the Saints. Cisneros, Gallegos, Onofre, Lopez, along with freshman Jimmy Ramirez III (120) — won by forfeit — are all ranked in the top-8 of their 3A weight classes.

Cisneros had the distinction of being a returning state champion.

“In the beginning of the season was a little rough, but I think I’m back on track for a second state title,” Cisneros said talking about his season so far.

Cisneros had a scare at the Arvada West Invite last Saturday. He cruised to a quarterfinal victory in one of the toughest tournaments in the state, but injured his ankle in the semifinals. Thursday was his first match back and he didn’t look hampered by the injury. Cisneros pinned Wheat Ridge junior Angelo Vecchiarelli in the second period.

“It was the first time I’ve been injured during my high school career,” Cisneros said. “I’m just focused on getting as healthy as I can and getting back (to state). I already know what I have to do. I’ll be a lot more confident down at Pepsi Center. On finals night I’ll have the upper hand.”

Fonseca believes Cisneros will be ready when the state-qualifying regional tournament rolls around in a few weeks.

The key dates ahead for all wrestlers in the state is regionals — Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11 — where the top four placers in each weight class will earn the right to wrestle at the state tournament Feb. 16-18 at Pepsi Center.

Jefferson is slated for the Class 3A Region 4 tournament at Elizabeth High School.

“The guys who qualify are going to be very competitive at the state tournament,” Fonseca said. “We are doing 6 a.m. practices in the morning and then in the evening. It’s showing.”

Wheat Ridge earned victories by pin Thursday from Josh Moler (145), Jayce Chea (160) and the Farmers’ lone senior Nikolos Schnebly (285). Schnebly was initially slated to win by forfeit in the final match of the night, but the Saints inserted 220-pound freshman Anthony Lozano to allow Schnebly to wrestle on Senior Night.

Wheat Ridge junior Josh Moler, top, puts the finishing touches on his pin. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“It’s hard when it’s your last match in your home gym and you don’t have anyone to wrestle and take a forfeit,” Osse said. “It was a nice gesture on Jefferson’s part.”

Schnebly is also the Farmers’ lone returning state qualifier, but there is hope that Wheat Ridge can get a few more down to Pepsi Center next month.

“I’ve got to work a lot more on setting up takedowns,” said Moler, who scored a first-period pin. “I’m much better than where I was at last year. I think I have a much better shot this year.”

Wheat Ridge is slotted for the Class 4A Region 3 tournament at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs for its state-qualifying tournament in a couple of weeks.

“I think we are in a really good situation going into the last month of the season,” Osse said.

  • No. 1 Pomona pins down another wrestling title at A-West Invite

ARVADA — Pomona sophomore Theorius Robison had enough in the tank Saturday night to do a backflip after winning the 132-pound title at the Arvada West Wrestling Invite.

“Wrestling can get emotional,” Pomona coach Sam Federico said about Robison’s match which was the highlight of the finals. “You try to keep things calm, but you never know. Sometimes it goes crazy. A finish like that is always exciting.”

Last year’s 126-pound 5A state champion and top ranked 132-pounder in Tim Yount’s On the Mat rankings let his emotions get away from him a little bit after defeating No. 2 ranked Grand Junction’s Dylan Martinez. However, Robison was clearly focused on the future moments after the come-from-behind victory.

“That was a big win, but I’ve got to just keep on getting ready for state. I know he (Martinez) is already working on stuff to get me back at state,” Robison said. “I’m trying to defend my title at state. I’ll keep working hard, but that was a big win.”

Robison trailed 5-0 late in the second period. It appeared he scored a 1-point escape, 2-point takedown and 3-point near-fall in the final moments of the second period, but after the two officials talked it over the near-fall was ruled to have happened after time expired in the period.

Martinez led 7-6 with 8 seconds left in regulation time and with a restart in the neutral position. Robison made one last-ditch effort to take the victory. The sophomore was able to get a last-second takedown to grab a 8-7 victory.

“I kind of knew he was going to back up,” said Robison, who improved to 18-1 on the season. “I came in hard and it just happened the way it happened. That’s the way is was supposed to go.”

Robison was one of four Panthers to take home first-place titles at the annual A-West Invite. Sophomores Justin Pacheco (113) and Colton Yapoujian (120), along with seniors Jason Romero (160) and Brandon Micale (285) joined Robison on top of the podium at the end of the night.

“All in all we wrestled pretty good,” Federico said. “We still have some improvement to do like everyone else here. We are wrestling pretty good.”

The Panthers had seven wrestlers in the finals and captured the team title with 196.5 points. The top-ranked team in 5A faced a tough field with 5A’s No. 2 Grand Junction, No. 3 Grandview, No. 6 Castle View, No. 7 Coronado and No. 9 Adams City all at the tournament that has been called the “mini-state” in the past.

The Panthers weren’t completely at full strength. Pomona was missing its 106 and 145 pounders.

Pacheco won one of the deepest brackets in the tournament. Five of the top seven ranked 5A wrestlers at 113 pounds made it a tough road for everyone. The sophomore took a 4-0 decision over Coronado’s Steve Dabelko in the final.

Yapoujian could likely moved up to No. 1 at 120 after winning another competitive bracket. The sophomore pinned Jefferson’s Jimmy Ramirez III in the championship bout at the 59 second mark.

Romero, a two-time state runner-up, had a tough match against Grand Junction’s Jay Skalecki. The senior was able to take a 4-2 victory on his journey to hopefully that first state title.

“Going up to 160s for the first weekend was a little different,” Romero said. “I was a little banged up from the tournament we just came from, but I was able to finish strong.”

Pomona senior Brandon Micale wrapped up the tournament with a 6-3 victory over Castle View’s David Nuriyev in the heavyweight bout. Micale came in ranked No. 4 at 220, but wrestled in the heavyweight class on Saturday.

“He (Micale) is a strong kid, but you are having to push around some big kids,” said Federico, who added he might keep Micale at heavyweight for the rest of the season. “He is used to doing it in football, but it’s a little different in wrestling. We’ll see.”

The next tournament up for Pomona is the two-day Top of the Rockies Tournament at Centaurus High School this coming Friday and Saturday.

  • Lakewood wrestling pins down dual win over Jefferson

LAKEWOOD — If you were late to the wrestling dual between Jefferson and Lakewood on Wednesday night you were likely out of luck.

The dual between the two Jeffco programs lasted about 30 minutes from start to finish. Six forfeited matches, seven pins and one technical fall made for a quick dual at Lakewood High School. No match went the full six minutes.

Lakewood came out victorious with a 41-36 victory. The Tigers jumped out to a 36-0 lead with pins by David Schadler (170 pounds), Brayton Stieger (182) and Michael Inouye (220) to go along with three forfeit victories.

Stieger had the quickest pin of the night. He pinned Jefferson freshman Kyler Tolka in nine seconds.

“I went in there serious and ready to go. I put a fireman carry on his and won,” Stieger said of his fastest pin of his career. “That’s all there is to it.”

Once the dual got to the lighter weights, Jefferson showed why it currently sits at No. 5 in Class 3A by Tim Yount’s On the Mat rankings. Saints’ Cruz Ortega (106), Randy Duran (126), Nick Gallegos (138) and Brandon Onofre (152) all won by pins and Jefferson picked up two wins by forfeit.

“Just for our kids to compete and get better in every position,” Jefferson coach Oscar Fonseca said of his objective in the dual before winter break. “That is all we are looking at right now.”

The Saints’ returning state champion senior Kyle Cisneros didn’t wrestle with Lakewood forfeiting at 132 pounds. Cisneros won the 3A 126-pound title last winter and On the Mat currently has him ranked No. 1 at 132 pounds in 3A.

“We don’t pay attention to that stuff,” Fonseca said of his five wrestlers currently ranked in the top eight of their weight class in 3A. “Rankings are settled at the last day of state (tournament).”

Fonseca added he believes that with hard work “any kid” has a shot to place at the state tournament come the middle of February at Pepsi Center in Denver.

Lakewood has its own returning state champion. Junior Gabe Dinette captured the 5A title at 145 pounds last season. Dinette and a handful of other Tigers were held out for Wednesday’s dual because of injury.

“A few of our kids are out nursing some small injuries,” Lakewood coach Daren Stennes said, who added Dinette will be good to go after the winter break. “We could have had some good match ups, but we didn’t.”

The match was eventually decided when Lakewood’s Rylan Morgan won by technical fall, 15-0, in the third period in the 145-pound bout to give the Tigers an 11-point lead with one match to go.

However, Jefferson finished the match strong with Onofre’s first round pin to close out the dual.

“You get anxious, but you work through it,” Onofre said waiting for his match, the last of the night.

Onofre is currently ranked No. 4 at 152 pounds. The Saints’ depth this season has Jefferson primed to make some noise at state in the team standings and cement the wrestling program as the flagship athletic program for the school.

“I think it’s fun to be competing at a high level,” Onofre said.

The Saints and Tigers get back to action with duals during the first week of January after the holidays.

“I’m just going to do a lot of running and weight lifting to keep my strength up. Going to eat right too,” Stieger said of his plans over the next two weeks. “Relax of course, it’s break.”

The 2015-16 all-state wrestling teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

Wrestlers of the year were determined by a formula which took the following information into account: season record; season winning percentage; type of wins at state (pin, tech fall, major decision); and strength of a weight classification’s bracket.

  • Jefferson names Nick Trombetta new football coach

Nick Trombetta has been named the new football coach at Jefferson, Saints athletic director Joe Generose said on Wednesday.

Trombetta, who has been as an assistant with Thornton since 2012, takes over a program that was 1-8 in 2015, and 0-9 the year before that. However, the Saints went 8-3 in 2013 and made the Class 2A playoffs.

“We feel great about this hire and think he will be very successful here at Jefferson,” Generose said.

Trombetta was an assistant head coach in charge of running backs and the special teams coordinator at Thornton. Prior to that, he was a head coach in a youth league from 2008-12, and was also a freshman assistant at Ranum in 2002.

“Becoming a head coach has been a goal of mine,” Trombetta said on Wednesday. “I am most excited to be part of the Edgewater community, and to be able to lay the foundation for a football program that the community, school, and most importantly the students can be prideful about. We are excited and ready for the process.

“The goal for the program will be to create a competitive culture that will not be comfortable with average. It is all one step at a time.”

Asked what made Trombetta stand out as a candidate, Generose said, “We were looking for a coach who had experience rebuilding a football program from the ground up and changing its culture. We believe that coach Trombetta not only has the experience in this area, but has an aptitude for connecting with all students and building positive relationships.”

Generose added that “football is arguably the most visible sport in high school and I believe athletics is a great indicator of how business is run inside the school.”
