When the dust settled on the first set of girls soccer rankings since the preseason, much had changed.

Ultimately, it was Columbine that emerged as the new No. 1 team in a transformed Class 5A poll that added three new teams, and also all kinds of tumult following an early two weeks where just about everyone was beat by someone else.

The Rebels, off to a 3-1-0 start, received just one first-place vote out of the 10 in the classification, but rose to the top with 84 overall points, ahead of new No. 2 Broomfield (four first-place votes, 73 points).

Mountain Vista dropped one spot to No. 3, Cherokee Trail jumped from No. 10 to No. 4, and Cherry Creek — unranked in the preseason — rounds out the top five.

Rocky Mountain was the lone team to hold its spot at No. 6, Regis Jesuit is up to No. 7, and newcomers Legacy (No. 8) and Ralston Valley (No. 9) joined the fray. Grandview, the preseason No. 1 which is off to an 0-2-0 start, fell to No. 10.

Each of the three No. 1 teams in the other classes held firm. Those are Valor Christian (4A), Kent Denver (3A) and Dawson (2A).

The 3A poll added No. 8 Manitou Springs and No. 10 SkyView Academy, but there were no new teams in 4A or 2A.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

New polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • 3A girls hoops Great 8 roundup: Late rally propels CSCS into semifinals

Manitou Springs Colorado Springs Christian girls basketball
    (Katie Pickrell/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER – Mark Engesser was at a loss for words Thursday afternoon.

The Colorado Springs Christian girls basketball coach had just watched his team rally from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. From there, the Lions held Manitou Springs scoreless on their way a 38-32 victory in the Great 8 of the Class 3A state tournament at Hamilton Gymnasium on the University of Denver campus.

Engesser was already thinking about what his postgame speech might sound like after CSCS entered the fourth quarter trailing 31-23. But the Lions (23-2) outscored the Mustangs 15-1 in the fourth quarter and overtime combined to advance to Friday night’s semifinals against top-seeded Sterling.

“I didn’t see that coming at all,” said Engesser, whose team defeated Manitou Springs for a third time this season. “Maybe some of the girls just got in a better rhythm and got used to the fans. I can’t describe how that happened, I really can’t. That was amazing.”

Megan Engesser scored 13 points, pouring in six points during a fourth-quarter flurry that tied the game up. Manitou Springs (16-9) opted to hold the ball for the final three minutes to gain the final shot, but the Lions’ stifling defense didn’t allow Mustangs senior Shelby Megyeri to get off a good attempt.

“I was scared to death to go man. We switched to man, full-court, and our girls showed they could do that,” Mark Engesser said. “Katie Hildenbrand, just an amazing defensive effort on Shelby Megyeri.”

In overtime, Katie McGrath and Rachel Ingram knocked down buckets. Madison Mackie put the game away with two free throws.

“I never thought that we were going to lose,” Megan Engesser said. “I wanted to give everything I had tonight. I was praying the whole time.”

Ariana Olson scored 10 points to lead Manitou Springs.

    (1) Sterling 44, (9) St. Mary’s 38

The top-seeded Tigers finally broke through with a big fourth quarter to stave off the upset bid from No. 9 St. Mary’s.

Sterling (25-0) struggled from the floor for much of the night, trailing by as many as five points in the third quarter. But the Tigers regained the lead for good early in the fourth quarter and outscored the Pirates 13-6 down the stretch.

Brooke Polenz scored a game-high 21 points for Sterling. For the Pirates (21-4), Makenna Bodette led the way with 17 points.

    (3) Lamar 43, (11) Pagosa Springs 42 (OT)

After 11th-seeded Pagosa Springs rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime, No. 3 Lamar did just enough to advance to Friday’s semifinals against Centauri.

Cali Clark scored a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds before fouling out to pace the Savages (23-2). Cassie Forgue added 13 points.

Lamar led 34-25 in the third quarter, but managed only 12 points in the second half.

Morgan Lewis led Pagosa Springs (18-5) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Farrah chipped in with 10 points for the Pirates.

Centauri rode a strong third quarter to a four-point victory in the quarterfinals, advancing to play Lamar in Friday’s semifinals.

The No. 10 Eagles held a one-point lead at halftime, but the Falcons (23-1) outscored Liberty Common (21-4) by six points in the third quarter.

Ember Canty scored 11 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds for Centauri, and Melissa Wilson added 10 points. Caroline Van Berkum grabbed 10 rebounds.

Halley Miklos led Liberty Common with 17 points and 13 rebounds and Hannah Kohl added 10 points.

  • Girls soccer rankings: Grandview, Valor, Kent, Dawson preseason No. 1 teams

    Grandview girls soccer champions
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

It appears that Grandview and Kent Denver will be carrying defending champion hype into the 2017 girls soccer season.

The Wolves and Sun Devils both sit atop their respective classes of the initial CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings.

Grandview claimed the Class 5A title in a thriller over Mountain Vista and Kent Denver came away with the 3A title after beating Colorado Academy 3-1.

Grandview was a nearly a unanimous choice as No. 1, but one first-place vote did go to Cherokee Trail, which comes in at No. 10 to start the year.

Mountain Vista will start the season ranked second, hoping this time around they can not just compete for a state title, but to claim it come May.

Columbine will start the year at No. 3 after reaching the 2016 semifinals before falling to Mountain Vista.

Broomfield, the fourth semifinal team from last year, snags a No. 5 ranking.

It was Lewis-Palmer who claimed the 4A championship last spring, but it’s Valor Christian who enters this season as the top-ranked team.

The Eagles edged the Rangers by one point to claim the top spot in the poll.

Cheyenne Mountain lands at No. 3 and is always a threat to compete for championship gold.

Windsor and Mullen come in at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively to start the year. Both teams advanced to last year’s 4A semifinals.

    Kent Denver girls soccer champions
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Kent Denver and Colorado Academy will start the year at No. 1 and No. 2 just where they ended after last spring.

Jefferson Academy starts the year ranked third after reaching the semis last year with Liberty Common taking the No.4 spot and The Academy, also a 2016 semifinalist, coming in at No. 5.

Dawson starts the year atop the 2A rankings. The Mustangs fell to Vail Mountain 7-0 in the 2A championship game last year, but are looking to make another run at a title.

Vail Mountain has moved up to 3A this season.

Evangelical Christian takes the No. 2 spot, Front Range Christian is third, Fountain Valley (a 3A team in 2016) is fourth and Denver Christian rounds out the 2A at No. 5.

Valor Christian returned to the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings this week after narrowly beating Golden on Wednesday.

The Eagles, now 11-9, are ranked No. 10 this week.

The top three teams in 4A remained the same with No. 1 Pueblo South leading the pack. No. 2 Evergreen avoided an upset against Green Mountain to stay in the hunt.

The biggest mover of the rankings goes to Heritage Christian (16-0) in 1A. The school is up three spots in this week’s poll at No. 2. The Eagles defeated No. 8 Briggsdale to leap in the rankings behind No. 1 Kit Carson.

In 5A, Ralston Valley continued its 17 game win streak to keep pace at No. 3 in the rankings.

5A’s lone shakeup comes with Fossil Ridge and Fairview. Fossil Ridge, ranked No. 10 in last week’s poll, switched spots with Fairview at No. 7.

3A added Faith Christian at No. 10, and Eaton moved up two spots to No. 8.

Paonia stayed at No. 1 in 2A with minor shakeup beneath them.

Grandview stays put at No. 1 in the 5A, along with the overall top six teams from last week.

No new teams broke into the 5A poll.

St. Mary’s is still firmly entrenched in the No. 1 spot in 3A. Sterling (No. 2), Liberty Common (No. 3) and Lamar (No. 4) also hold on to their positions from a week ago.

Olathe was the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings at No. 8.

Paonia is still No. 1 in 2A, but Yuma made a two-spot jump to come into the week as the new No. 2 team.

Simla breaks in this week, coming in at No. 8.

  • Liberty Common girls basketball gets top-10 win over Eaton

    (Alex Clough/CHSAANow.com)

FORT COLLINS — Liberty Common girls basketball had three players score in double figures to secure a top-10 win on Friday.

The Eagles beat No. 10 Eaton 58-34.

“I am not usually a shooter, but today I was,” said Chloe Kohl, who had 14 points, including three 3-pointers for Liberty Common. “That was really exciting.”

Halley Miklos and Hannah Kohl were also huge contributors for the Eagles. Miklos was the leading scorer with 18 total points, and Hannah Kohl had 14 total points and two 3-pointers.

Addie Randel and Bailie Duncan each added five points for Liberty Common.

The key for Liberty Common was to play well on defense. After the first quarter they were up 14-7.

“I feel really good about tonight,” Liberty Common coach Troy Ukasick said. “It is a really good quality opponent and we were nervous about them. I am really proud of how we did tonight.”

During the third quarter, Eaton had 11 of their 13 points that quarter come from free throws. The Reds hit 71.4 percent of their free throws.

“I give credit to Liberty, Troy does a really good job with the girls,” said Eaton coach Todd Hernandez. “They have a lot of experience and their length gave us a little bit of difficulty. I think sometimes it shows we don’t have a lot of varsity experience.

“It really starts with Liberty’s defense. They really put it on us.”

Liberty hosts Akron on Saturday, while Eaton will face Resurrection Christian on Tuesday.

Pueblo South Holy Family girls basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Holy Family has played its way back into the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

The Tigers grabbed wins over Erie and Mead last week, earning them enough votes to be the only new team in the 4A poll. They’re ranked No. 10 this week.

Pueblo South remains the top team in 4A and are still undefeated against Colorado teams this season.

Air Academy (No. 5) and Pueblo West (No. 6) each gained two spots from their position last week.

The 5A poll also had only one new team with Fossil Ridge breaking in at No. 9.

Grandview remains the top team in the class, perhaps even solidifying their position even more after a 70-55 win over No. 7 Cherry Creek.

Fruita Monument comes in at No. 6, two spots better than last week’s rankings.

St. Mary’s took 10 first-place votes to remain the No. 1 team in 3A, with Sterling still right behind the Pirates at No. 2.

Manitou Springs jumped two spots from last week, coming in at No. 10.

Faith Christian (No. 9) and Eaton (No. 10) are the two new teams to the 3A poll.

Paonia still stands as the No. 1 team in 2A thanks to an undefeated record.

Del Norte broke into the top-three, landing at No. 3, two spots better than their position last week. At No. 6, Swink also jumped two places.

At No. 10, Holyoke is the only new team in the 2A poll.

In 1A, Kit Carson is still at No. 1, but Fleming jumps a spot to come in at No. 2. Both teams are still undefeated.

Antonito (No. 3), Kit/Branson (No. 4) and Heritage Christian (No. 5) round out the top half of the rankings. Each of the top five teams received at least one first-place vote.

Cheyenne Wells is the only new team in 1A, coming in at No. 10.
