  • Volleyball rankings: Mountain Vista makes jump to No. 2 in 5A

Every No. 1 team in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings held their position, but there was still plenty of new looks near the top of each class.

In Class 5A, Chatfield remains undefeated at No. 1, but they have company nipping at their heels. The Mountain Vista Golden Eagles made the jump from No. 10 to No. 2 following a sweep of 4A’s Ponderosa, a team that many would call one of the best in the state, regardless of classification.

Undefeated Prairie View and Bright both join the rankings this week at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.

In 4A, Lewis-Palmer has yet to relinquish the top spot this year, but now it has Colorado Springs-area rival Cheyenne Mountain right behind them at No. 2. The Indians looked impressive during a 3-0 sweep of Doherty this week and will get their shot at the Rangers later this season.

Ponderosa fell two spots following its loss to Mountain Vista.

New to the 4A poll this week is Elizabeth, who comes in at No. 10.

Eaton continues to remain dominant in the 3A rankings, even taking down last week’s No. 2 Platte Valley early last week.

Undefeated Alamosa breaks into the 3A rankings this week, jumping all the way up to No. 7.

Resurrection Christian says firmly in the No. 1 spot in 2A. One team did break their way into this week’s poll as Vail Christian lands at No. 9.

The No. 1 team in 1A is still Idalia, who has yet to lose this season. McClave played its way into the 1A rankings this week, landing at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Football roundup: Horizon knocks off Legacy with late safety

Horizon was stuffed on fourth down with less than three minutes to play, and it looked like Legacy might escape with a big win in Class 5A football. But then the Hawks got a game-changing, go-ahead safety and walked away with a 22-21 win on Friday night.

The game was a wild one.

Legacy jumped out 14-0 in the second quarter, but Horizon battled back to tie it at 14 in the third quarter.

Legacy took the lead when quarterback Matt Lynch, a UCLA commit, threw a touchdown pass later in that quarter. Horizon answered with a Cade Verkler rushing score, but the extra point missed, making it a 21-20 Legacy lead in the fourth quarter.

Late in the fourth quarter, Horizon had a 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard-line. The Hawks were stuffed. But two plays later, Horizon got the key safety. It was 22-21, and the Hawks would hold on to win.

    2A/1A: (3) Bayfield 35, (1) Paonia 0

Bayfield ended Paonia’s 26-game winning streak in stunning fashion.

It was 22-0 at halftime, and the lead only grew from there. Bayfield forced three turnovers in an outstanding defensive effort.

“We had to be physical up front, and we had to stop them,” coach Gary Heide told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “The plan worked to perfection.”

Paonia’s 26-game streak was the second-longest in the state.

“I’m kind of a low-key, one-game-at-a-time, and, ‘No game is no more important than the other’ guy, but this morning, I just realized the opportunity that Bayfield had, along with getting a win,” Heide said. “A game like this, you end up gaining a lot of confidence.”

Bayfield quarterback Kelton McCoy threw three touchdown passes for the traditionally run-based offense.

“We don’t pass a whole lot, but when we do, we try to do it at optimal times. Tonight, it really worked out,” Heide said. “Kelton McCoy threw some really nice passes.”

    3A: (1) Pueblo East 47, Discovery Canyon 36

Discovery Canyon nearly pulled off a major upset, but Pueblo East was able to pull out a win.

“It was a fun night,” Pueblo East coach Lee Meisner told the Scoreboard Show. “We knew we were going to get everything they had. … We had a heck of a game.”

This game featured 10 ties or lead changes, including a number in the final quarter. It also had a 99-yard kickoff return.

Discovery Canyon led 28-27 going to the fourth. Pueblo East soon went ahead 33-28, and Discovery Canyon answered to retake the lead at 36-33.

Then, with 2:45 to go, Pueblo East took the lead for good at 40-36. The Eagles added a late touchdown to ice the game.

Said Meisner: “We just kept preaching to our kids: ‘We have to play four quarters of football. No matter what the score is, just at the end of it, do your job, and then worry about the score.’”

    5A: Doherty 24, Fruita Monument 21 (OT)

Doherty jumped out to an 18-0 lead at halftime, but then Fruita Monument started to chip away.

It was 18-13 after the third quarter, and then tied in the fourth after a safety and a field goal.

In overtime, Fruita Monument kicked a field goal on its possession, and then Doherty’s Tequan Baker scored the winner on a 6-yard run:

    1A: Limon 26, (4) Burlington 0

Limon pulled off the upset of its rival, and improved to 4-0 this season.

“Our kids really stepped up tonight,” Limon coach Mike O’Dwyer told the Scoreboard Show. “I thought they played really well. By far, the best game we’ve played all year.”

Of the shutout, O’Dwyer said, “Anytime you play Burlington, they’re so disciplined and so well-coached, you have to play assignment defense and everybody has to do their job and not worry about what everybody else is doing. You just have to take care of your job. I thought tonight, our assignment defense really played very, very well.”

    [divider]

    1A: (5) Cedaredge 40, (10) Center 13

It was 14-13 at halftime, but Cedaredge pulled away to notch a huge top-10 win to move to 4-0.

“They had some turnovers and we capitalized on those turnovers,” coach Brandon Milholland told the Scoreboard Show. “Another important piece that I realized late in the fourth quarter is we’re starting to get out of our own way and kind of believe in what we’ve going on.”

Cedaredge pulled away to 25-13 after the third quarter, then put the game away in the fourth.

    [divider]

    8-man: (3) Norwood 38, (4) Sargent 28

Norwood was clinging to a 16-12 lead at halftime, but pulled away in the third quarter with two quick scores.

“We got a lucky bounce,” coach Brandon Alexander told the Scoreboard Show. “We scored quick, and turned the ball over, and scored again. Two scores early in the third quarter, that was really huge for us.

“Sargent was a great team, they were very athletic and fast, so it was exactly what we had to have.”

  • Coronado’s Hankin has experienced it all at 5A state wrestling tourney

DENVER — Coronado senior Jess Hankin has run the gamut of emotion at the Class 5A state wrestling tournament.

Hankin has experienced failing to place on the podium, winning a state championship and then suffering a one-point loss in a title bout.

“I don’t think about my losses all the time,” Hankin said Thursday night after opening up his final prep state tournament with a 9-1 victory at 132 pounds against Thornton junior Wendell Berry. “I do think about what I did wrong and what I need to improve on. I use that to get me better in this situation and atmosphere. There is a lot more pressure involved then usual.”

Living in the now keeps Hankin focused on the task at hand as the lone wrestler in 5A attempting to win his second individual state championship after falling short his junior season.

“It’s pretty motivating,” Hankin said looking back on last year’s championship bout loss. “It’s nice to go out on a win.”

As a freshman, Hankin got a taste winning on at mats at Pepsi Center. He finished with a 1-2 record at 103 pounds before a loss in a second-round consolation match ended his tournament.

Hankin’s sophomore season ended with the ultimate prize, a state championship at 113 pounds. Hankin upset top-seed Kyndall Rutz of ThunderRidge in the final 6-2 to end his remarkable three-day run.

Coming in as a returning state champion in 2014, Hankin advanced to the 126-pound champion bout but suffered a 1-0 loss to Cherry Creek’s Mitch Finesilver.

“I haven’t changed anything as far as my warm ups or routine,” Hankin said of his fourth trip down to Pepsi Center. “I just get focused on my match and think about what I’m going to do.”

Hankin’s four takedowns and escape against Berry on Thursday night was enough to earn the victory. However, the senior admitted he was a little frustrated about his first-round performance.

“My attitude is always to be dominate, no matter what and no matter who the opponent is,” Hankin said. “I felt like I didn’t wrestle to my full ability this round.”

Hankin faces Lakewood freshman Gabriel Dinette in the quarterfinals at 132 on Friday afternoon. An interesting twist could face Hankin if he advances to the final Saturday night. Cherry Creek junior Matt Finesilver, younger brother of Mitch who defeated Hankin last year in the 126-pound final, could be Hankin’s opponent.

“Everybody is going out to win this thing,” Hankin said about how he respects all his opponents. “Nobody is going to just sit down and let you win. You just have to keep going.”

Denver East senior Maya Nelson’s goal is to be the first female to place in the top six at the state tournament. Nelson will have an uphill climb after losing to Prairie View senior Keynan Davis in the opening round at 120 pounds.

Davis had a key two-point takedown of Nelson at the close of the first period. He eventually held a 5-0 lead before Nelson got a takedown late to make the final score 5-2.

“Honestly, even though she is a girl I would say she is the second strongest person I’ve ever wrestled,” Davis said. “She is really strong.”

Nelson made history last 5A state tournament becoming the first female wrestler to win a first-round match. Two close two-point losses in the quarterfinals and second round of consolations prevented Nelson from standing on the podium.

It was actually the fourth meeting between Davis and Nelson over the past two years. Davis was able to even his record to 2-2 against Nelson with Thursday’s win.

“I knew that was how it was going to be because everyone loves Maya,” Davis said of hearing plenty of cheers for Nelson during the match. “She is a great wrestler. I knew everyone would be watching our match. I was just mentally prepared to go out there and be aggressive with her.”

There were no major first-round upsets in the 5A tournament. All six returning state champions from last season were victorious, including Grand Junction senior Jacob Trujillo who is attempting to become a three-time state champion.

Last year’s runner-up Pomona took a slight edge on Jeffco rival and defending state champion Arvada West in the team standings after Day 1. The Panthers racked up 24.5 points. A-West (24) stands in second and Pine Creek (18.5) sits in third. Grand Junction (18) is close behind in fourth with Chaparral (17.5) is fifth.
