  • 2016 Volleyball regional brackets, matchups released

    The 2016 regional volleyball brackets were released on Monday, and the qualifying schools all found out who they’d be playing and where they’d be going.

    The 3A-5A brackets had their fields set by the RPI, and the teams were seeded by the final RPI standings, as well, with some changes made due to geography and first-round league matchups. Teams in 1A and 2A qualified for the regional round after playing in districts last week.

    In Class 5A, it was Fossil Ridge who earned the top overall seed after finishing with the highest RPI rating. As a result, the Sabercats will their region.

    Rock Canyon, Fairview, Chatfield, Denver East, Chaparral, Mountain Vista, Rampart, Fruita Monument Arapahoe, Loveland and Ralston Valley are the other 5A host teams.

    In 4A, undefeated Lewis-Palmer rightfully sits in the No. 1 spot. The Rangers are looking to reclaim the 4A title that they lost to Cheyenne Mountain last year.

    Along with the Rangers, it will be Eagle Valley, Cheyenne Mountain, Montrose, Pueblo West, Valor Christian, Holy Family, Berthoud, Thomas Jefferson, Silver Creek, Niwot and Palisade hosting for 4A regionals.

    Eaton stands tall as the top overall seed in 3A regionals and is looking to claim a fourth-consecutive title in 2016.

    Valley, Colorado Springs Christian, University, Bayfield, Resurrection Christian, Faith Christian, Middle Park, Salida, St. Mary’s, Sterling and Pagosa Springs are the other teams that earned the right to host.

    After the completion of district play in 2A, the eight host-site teams were determined. Unlike 3A-5A, which is seeded by RPI, 2A regional brackets are seeded by district results.

    Hoehne, Dayspring Christian, Paonia, Denver Christian, Del Norte, Yuma, Telluride and Colorado Springs School will all host regional play this weekend.

    Like 2A, the 1A regional brackets are determined by the outcome of district play. As a result, it will be La Veta, Kit Carson, Flagler, Rocky Mountain Lutheran, Nucla, Springfield, Kiowa and Weldon Valley who will serve as regional hosts.

    The results of regionals will set the state tournament pairings for all classes.

  • Grandview’s Brie Oakley makes history at state cross country meet

    COLORADO SPRINGS — Melody Fairchild was long considered the gold standard for girls cross country in Colorado history.

    In many ways, Fairchild still is the gold standard. But, a strong case could be made that this has become the golden era.

    More and more ladies in recent years have thrown their hat into the ring, challenging Fairchild’s spot as arguably the greatest of all-time.

    There was Air Academy’s Katie Rainsberger, a Nike national champion last year who shattered a national record in the 3,000 meters.

    There was Niwot’s Elise Cranny, a Nike national runner-up who ran some of the top-10 fastest track times in American history.

    Fort Collins senior Lauren Gregory, though in her humbleness would be the last to say it, is another of the legends who have made a lasting impact on Colorado cross country, even on the national level.

    On Saturday, Gregory was striving to join Estes Park’s Emily Plummer (Class 3A, 1994-1997), Wheat Ridge’s Rebekah McDowell (5A, 1992-1995), and Smoky Hill’s Megan Kaltenbach (1999-2002) as the only four-time girls cross country champions in state history.

    But, Grandview’s Brie Oakley had a better day. The nation’s No. 1 ranked runner by Milesplit.com elevated to an earth-shattering performance with a time of 17 minutes, 7 seconds to claim the 5A crown. To put that time into context, Rainsberger posted a 17:39 last year, which was the fastest time of the day by 35 seconds.

    Gregory, after sticking on Oakley through one mile, finished as the runner-up in 18:32. Oakley flipped the script on Gregory after a narrow 18:15-18:17 margin at state last year. The whole idea of being at this level this quickly is surreal to the Grandview stalwart. After all, she’s only in her second cross country season as a senior.

    “I was hearing about Lauren and Katie last year early in the season and I was like, ‘wow, I want to be like them someday,’” Oakley said. “I want to be like them with people cheering my name. That definitely motivated me. I guess I’m one of the top girls now, but I want to still keep my head straight. I just want to keep moving forward and keep doing what I love.”

    Initially, Oakley didn’t think her time was going to be that quick.

    “Coming into the stadium, I couldn’t exactly tell what it said,” she noted. “I thought it said 18 minutes or something and I was like, ‘oh my gosh I’m running a lot slower than I usually do.’ But then I got closer and it said 16:55. That really opened my eyes.”

    Oakley, after chasing surely more records in the future, will be running for the University of California next year.

    As for Gregory, she took the result with as positive an attitude as one could have in difficult circumstances.

    In the spring she struggled with an injury that was diagnosed as a stress fracture after the season was complete. She didn’t have her usual individual success, but fought through to score as many points at the state meet as she could during her team’s pursuit of a state championship. She came through. But, a long healing process ensued.

    “I kind of rebooted the whole system,” she said. “The whole summer was reboot, reboot. We needed to dust out everything in the past and just change myself completely. I wish I could’ve had the four-peat, but the fact I was even out here today makes me so happy. I got to run against the best runner in the whole nation. I have to give it all to her. She was better than me today.”

    Gregory, ranked No. 8 in the country, came back to shatter multiple course records this fall. She has committed to become an Arkansas Razorback next season.

    In a matchup of two nationally ranked teams, the Broomfield Eagles held off Mountain Vista 55-62 to claim their second consecutive state championship.

    Ivy Gonzales (third), Madison Mooney (fourth), Laura Thompson (13th), Katelyn Mitchem (15th), and Emily Mitchem (20th), the scoring five for Broomfield on Saturday, are part of a junior class that promises to be around for more.

    Class 4A

    Maria Mettler may not have thought it was possible over the summer, but the senior was able to add to a recent Air Academy assault on cross country titles. Her 18:31 made for a comfortable cushion over Battle Mountain’s Elizabeth Constien (18:59) and Naomi Harding (18:59) in the individual competition.

    “I never would’ve dreamed this,” Mettler admitted.

    She found inspiration from seeing teammate Ethan Powell win the 4A boys race an hour earlier.

    “I remember watching Ethan and I was so excited,” Mettler said. “I felt like I had just run my race.”

    The Huskies of Battle Mountain returned the favor in the team competition though by winning 98-130 over Air Academy. The contingent of Constien, Harding, Alex Raichart (13th), Grace Johnson (38th), and Kaela Farhney (42nd) doesn’t have a senior among them. The ladies won their second state championship in the sport, also claiming 4A in 2005.

    Class 3A

    In easily the most dramatic finish of the day, Peak to Peak’s Quinn McConnell had a small lead on Denver North’s Kayla Young coming into the stadium.

    From exhaustion, McConnell took a spill while nearing the finish. Young went down herself just moments before. Each runner was stumbling, but Young had enough to pass a depleted McConnell with a winning time of 18:36.

    The Denver North senior, a 4A runner-up to Rainsberger the past two seasons before moving down a class, won her first state championship and the second individually for the school in joining Joseph Manilafasha (4A, 2006 and 2008) as titlists.

    “I took it out hard on purpose and knew that would take a toll on everyone,” Young said. “When I fell I thought it was over, but I got up. Then she fell. I stayed up and I did it.”

    The Viking was proud to bring one home to her school.

    “It’s a really small program and so I think it’s amazing to represent them and show that small guys can get state titles too,” she said.

    McConnell (18:47.1), who was the defending 3A champion, fell over the line just ahead of fellow sophomore and teammate Anna Shults (18:47.2). The tandem teamed with Tiana Bradfield (12th), Rachael Metzler (19th), and Ellie Triem (21st) to provide Peak to Peak with their first-ever state championship in cross country. They were the runner-up in 2015 and 2007. The Pumas (57 points) were well-ahead of The Classical Academy (94).

    Class 2A

    In the final race of the day, Soroco sophomore Chloe Veilleux (19:47) outlasted Buena Vista’s senior tandem of Annie Hughes (19:56) and Whitney White (20:07) for her first state crown. Veilleux was sixth at the state meet as a freshman.

    Telluride was able to secure back-to-back championships with 21 points, 18 ahead of runner-up Lyons. Soleil Gaylord (3rd), Maya Ordonez (5th) and Alyssa Pack (13th) led the way for the Miners.

  • Volleyball rankings: Lewis-Palmer new No. 1 in 4A

    Lewis-Palmer is back as the No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings.

    After suffering a five-set loss to Rock Canyon, Cheyenne Mountain fell out of the top spot for the first time since winning the 2015 4A state championship.

    It was just one move in what is a very different looking top 10 from a week ago.

    Holy Family jumped two spots to No. 3 while Berthoud jumped three spots to No. 6.

    Three new teams cracked the top 10 as Montrose came in at No. 7, Thomas Jefferson  lands at No. 9 and Valor Christian rounds out the rankings at No. 10.

    There was also a lot of movement in the 3A rankings, which also saw three new teams break in. Eaton held on to the top spot, but Resurrection Christian made the jump to No. 2.

    Sterling (No. 5), Pagosa Springs (No. 7) and Delta (No. 10) are the three new teams in 3A.

    After rattling off two wins last week, Chatfield is still the No. 1 team in the 5A rankings.

    Rock Canyon and Highlands Ranch each jumped two spots to land at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

    Fossil Ridge (No. 8) and Cherokee Trail (No. 9) are the two new teams in the 5A rankings.

    Paonia remains the top team in the 2A rankings.

    The biggest 2A jump of the week belonged to Dayspring Christian who jumped from No. 5 to No. 3.

    There were no new teams in the 2A poll.

    Fleming is the new No. 1 team in the 1A poll, taking five of eight first-place votes.

    Prairie made a sizable jump from a week ago, coming in at No. 5 which is four spots better than its previous ranking.

    Flagler (No. 6) and Kiowa (No. 10) are the two new teams in this week’s 1A poll.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Volleyball rankings: New faces lead three polls

    A trio of new teams are taking over No. 1 spots in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings this week.

    With plenty of changeover in the Class 2A poll, Paonia comes in as the new top team. The Eagles have not dropped a set yet and cruised to a 2-0 start.

    Dayspring Christian jumped three spots to No. 5, but it was the bottom of the poll that showed the most change.

    Highland (No. 7), John Mall (No. 8), Simla (No. 9) and Telluride (No. 10) are all new to the 2A rankings, showing that a title run in that class could be wide open come November.

    The same theory could hold true for 5A. Chatfield comes in as the new No. 1 team, jumping two spots in the process.

    Despite a five-set loss to Cheyenne Mountain, Caparral jumps from No. 2 to No. 6.

    Three new teams broke into the 5A rankings with Highlands Ranch landing at No. 5, Mountain Vista coming in at No. 8 and Lakewood breaking in at No. 9.

    Cheyenne Mountain and Lewis-Palmer hang on to the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the 4A poll.

    Holy Family notched the biggest jump of the week, leaping three spots to land at No. 5.

    At No. 10, Eagle Valley is the only new team to the 4A poll.

    Only one team broke into the 3A rankings as well as Middle Park comes in at No. 10. Resurrection Christian made a big jump to land at No. 4 this week. The Cougars were sitting at No. 9 in the preseason rankings.

    Eaton holds on to the top spot in 3A.

    Kit Carson takes over the No. 1 spot in 1A thanks to a 2-0 start. Previous No. 1 Fleming is also undefeated on the year, but dropped one spot to No. 2.

    Weldon Valley (No. 4) and McClave (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A poll.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    MONTROSE — Grand Junction boys golf captured the Montrose Black Canyon Invitational on Tuesday.

    The Tigers shot 213 to win the team championship, while Montrose was second at 216.

    Grand Junction’s Trevor Olkowski was 3-under and won the event individually. Montrose’s Glen-Michael Mihavetz was second at 1-under.

    The 2016 all-state girls soccer teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

    AURORA — Valor Christian’s athletic department had a banner season in 2015-16, leading the state with seven team championships.

    In terms of individual sports, Cheyenne Mountain led the way with 11 individual champions.

    Team Championships

    Valor Christian had the most team championships this season with seven. The Eagles won boys golf, softball, football, girls basketball, girls swimming, boys lacrosse and baseball.

    The seven titles are the most since Regis Jesuit and Cheyenne Mountain each won seven in 2010-11.

    Five teams tied for second place in the state with three team championships this season: Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Academy, Kent Denver, Pomona and Regis Jesuit.

    Colorado Academy and Valor Christian each had a state-best three girls championships, while Valor’s four titles were the most on the boys’ side.

    In all, 67 different teams won a team championship in 2015-16, including 16 teams which won multiple championships.

    Individual Championships

    Cheyenne Mountain also had an outstanding year in terms of individual titles, leading the state with 11 championships. The program was well balanced: Six championships came from its girls teams, and five came from the boys.

    Lutheran’s 10 individual championships were the second-most in the state, including a state-best nine boys titles. Regis Jesuit was third with nine individual titles, and Air Academy and Pomona tied for fourth with eight apiece.

    A total of 135 schools had at least one individual champion, and 82 had multiple champions. Of those, 21 schools had at least five individual champions.
