Jeffco Stadium is set to celebrate the start of its 60th season

A copy of the original program of the inaugural football game at Jeffco Stadium on Sept. 5, 1959 between Lakewood Tigers and Cheyenne Indians. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) LAKEWOOD — Bear Creek and Lakewood will kick off a historic season for Jeffco Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30.
The flagship stadium for Jeffco Public Schools begins its 60th season with the opener between the two old Jeffco rivals that were around when Jeffco Stadium (500 Kipling St. in Lakewood) opened its doors in 1959.

Logo celebrating Jeffco Stadium’s 60th season. “I think it is really exciting for both players and coaches to be the game to kickoff the season at Jeffco (Stadium). On top of it we get a rivalry game against Lakewood High School,” Bear Creek football coach Zach Morris said. “It is pretty amazing that it is the 60th year of football at Jeffco, hopeful we do the district proud with a high quality game.”
The inaugural game on Sept. 5, 1959 featured the Cheyenne Indians versus Lakewood Tigers.
Admission prices will be rolled back for Friday’s football game between the Bear Creek Bears and Lakewood Tigers to celebrate the event — $3 adults and $2 students. The first 500 football fans through the gates will receive a collectable Jeffco Stadium 1959-2019 60th anniversary season t-shirt. Gates will open at 6 p.m., one-hour before kickoff.

Old Jeffco rivals Lakewood and Bear Creek kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday night. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Despite the fact that Bear Creek and Lakewood are not in the same conference with the Bears moving down to Class 4A a few years ago, Lakewood football coach Jeff Braun expects a spirited game.
“This is a long time rival between to schools that really don’t like each other,” Braun said.
This anniversary holds special meaning for Jeffco’s Executive Director of Athletics and Activities — Jim Thyfault. The Pomona High School graduate attended games in the 1960s, played at Jeffco Stadium for the Panthers in the 1970s and had sons play at Jeffco Stadium.
“The stadium has stood the test of time,” Thyfault said. “In large part due to the support from the district to update when needed and the commitment our stadium managers put into it. They take a lot of pride in their work.”
Jeffco Stadium is set to host 26 regular-season prep football games this season. Jeffco Stadium has been the home of the all-classification Colorado High School Activities Association’s three-day state track meet for a decade.
“It’s an honor that CHSAA asks the district to host the three-day state track & field meet each year at the stadium,” Thyfault said. “It always caps off a great year of good football, good track & field, good athletes, coaches and officials.”

The first 500 fans through the gates at Jeffco Stadium on Friday night will receive a free commemorative t-shirt marking the historic game. Gates open at 6 p.m. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) -

Jeffco boys golfers tackle tough Bear Creek Golf Club

Arvada West junior Tyler Tyson chips out of trouble on the par 4 No. 11 hole Monday at Bear Creek Golf Club in Lakewood. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) LAKEWOOD — It’s not even September, but Monday’s boys golf tournament marked the midway point of conference play for the Class 5A and 4A Jeffco League.
On the toughest of the six courses of the Jeffco League tournament schedule, Chatfield senior Max Heupel soared up 5A individual standings with a strong 1-over-par, 73. Heupel was six strokes better than Arvada West’s junior Zach Tyson and Valor Christian’s tandem of Logan Byler and Lucas Schulte, who all shot rounds of 79.
Heupel is tied with Lakewood sophomore Max Lange atop the 5A Jeffco individual standings. Valor widened its lead in the team race over second-place Ralston Valley and third-place Lakewood.

Lakewood junior Ryan Liao chips onto the No. 16 green during his round of 80 Monday at Bear Creek Golf Club. Liao had a hole-in-one on the No. 7 99-yard par 3 to highlight his round. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Defending 5A Jeffco individual medalist — Lakewood junior Ryan Liao — shot a round of 80, but did have one of the highlights with a hole-in-one on the No. 7, 99-yard par 3.
On the 4A side, Golden’s Grayson Flambures took the individual title with a round of 80. The Demons also edged Evergreen by six strokes in the team race. Golden and Evergreen are locked in a tight race for the conference team title. The Demons are one stroke ahead of the Cougars with three league tournaments remaining.
Evergreen’s Clayton Whitton and Jack Mitchell are currently one-two in the overall 4A Jeffco individual standings. Green Mountain sophomore Ollie Gibbons is third, Flambures and Conifer junior Dakota Dolph is tied for fourth.
The final three Jeffco League tournaments are scheduled for Indian Tree (Aug. 30) West Woods (Sept. 9) and The Broadlands (Sept. 17).

Bear Creek grad Olabisi Johnson selected on the final day of the 2019 NFL Draft

Olabisi Johnson, pictured during his career at Bear Creek. (Cynthia Betancourt/MaxPreps) Olabisi Johnson, a 2015 graduate of Bear Creek, was selected in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday.
Johnson, a wide receiver, was picked by the Minnesota Vikings with the No. 247 overall selection. He becomes the first-ever product of Bear Creek to ever be taken in the NFL Draft.
Johnson is the second former Colorado high school football player to be drafted this season, following Wiggins grad Dalton Risner, who was selected in the second round.
This is the 42nd time in history that the state of Colorado has had multiple players selected in one year, and second season in a row multiple players have been drafted. Find a complete database of former Colorado high school football players who have been drafted here.
Johnson started 11 games for CSU last season, and caught a career-high 54 passes for 796 yards and four touchdowns. He is one of 10 Rams to finish his career with more than 2,000 yards receiving.
At Bear Creek, Johnson was a first-team all-state selection as both a wide receiver and a cornerback in Class 5A during his senior season. He also competed in track, winning in the 5A 110 hurdles as a senior.

No. 10 Chatfield girls lacrosse completes Jeffco League sweep
LAKEWOOD — Chatfield had officially clinched its first girls lacrosse conference title since 2014 before taking the field Thursday at Trailblazer Stadium.
Completing an undefeated record in the Jeffco League with an 18-1 victory over Bear Creek was the cherry on top for a historic conference season for the Chargers (12-3, 8-0 in Jeffco).

Chatfield sophomore Megan Locke (12) drives past Bear Creek freshman Allison Wathen during a Jeffco League finale Thursday. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “It means so much,” Chatfield senior Bailey Truex said after the team excepted the conference title plaque. “For the four of us seniors we haven’t had this since we made varsity our freshman year. It’s so cool to come together as a team.”
Truex, Ryley Caron, Madeline Tokarski and Jordyn Bashore are the four seniors who were freshmen when Sarah MacDonald took over as coach for the Chargers’ girls lacrosse program four years ago.
Chatfield finished fourth in the Jeffco League during MacDonald’s first season in 2016. The Chargers had back-to-back third-place finished behind rivals Columbine and Dakota Ridge the past two years.
“This was a full team effort,” MacDonald said. “We hadn’t beaten Columbine before. We hadn’t beaten Dakota Ridge before. We really had a common goal where we were really focused and ready to win.”
Chatfield — ranked No. 10 in the CHSAANow.com girls lacrosse poll — will enter the postseason on a 10-game winning streak. The league title gives the Chargers an automatic bid to the 20-team state tournament.

Chatfield senior Bailey Truex, left, helped lead the Chargers to their first girls lacrosse league title since 2014. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “We are an underdog because I don’t think other people see us as a great team like those big name teams,” said Caron, who had eight goals against Bear Creek. “I think the winning streak really making us going in feeling strong about ourselves. We really can beat anyone if we put our minds to it.”
Truex and freshman Makenna Mant both had four goals in the victory over the Bears (5-9, 0-8), who also closed out their regular season with the conference finale. Tokarski and freshman Sophie Astone added a goal each for the Chargers.
“We set the goal at the beginning of the season to win league. We stuck to that the whole time,” Truex said. “We had a couple of close games, but we stuck to it and won them all.”
Chatfield’s closest league game was a 12-11 victory over Golden. Since that close call, the Chargers have won four of its five final regular-season games by double-digit goals.

Chatfield freshman Sophie Astone, right, weaves through the Bear Creek defense during the Chargers’ 18-1 win. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) The Chargers were No. 9 in the RPI rankings coming into Thursday’s game. Chatfield is almost guaranteed a first-round bye, but might have to go on the road for a second-round game that has to be played by May 11.
“It is kind of that anxious moment where know we are waiting for the brackets to come out,” MacDonald said. “No matter what we are going to be ready to play and focused. In my opinion — I’m a little bias because it my team — I think we can go really far with the group of girls we have when we remain focused and play for each other.”
The last time Chatfield won a league title the Chargers advanced all the way into the state semifinals five years ago.
“We feel really accomplished about our season and we are really pumped about the playoffs,” Caron said.

Chatfield’s girls lacrosse team lifted the Jeffco League title Thursday at Trailblazer Stadium. The Chargers finished conference play with an undefeated 8-0 record. It’s the first conference title for the program since 2014. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)
