  • Football roundup: Roosevelt beats No. 3 Silver Creek on game’s final play

    (@SilverCreekLA/Twitter)

In a wild matchup, Roosevelt football scored on the game’s final play to upset Silver Creek on Friday night.

The Roughriders’ Noah Craig punched in a rushing touchdown as time expired to secure the 29-27 upset.

“Holy cow. It was a huge win,” Roosevelt coach Lane Wasinger told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game.

To even get to that final play, though, Roosevelt first had to convert on fourth down with 25 seconds remaining.

“It was like, ‘You know what?’ Let’s just go for it. Let’s go for the end zone,” Wasinger said.

Roosevelt quarterback Trent Beall, a junior, scrambled for the first down — and got out-of-bounds.

“He’s so slippery and he’s so good with his feet, and he’s just a playmaker,” Wasinger said. “It gave us a chance to put it in the end zone.”

Craig, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound senior, did just that.

“The sideline went crazy,” Wasinger said. “We just won a big football game.”

Roosevelt had led Silver Creek 16-6 after three quarters, before both offenses broke loose in the final quarter.

“It got pretty crazy,” Wasinger said of the fourth quarter.

Silver Creek actually took the lead with seven minutes to play, but Roosevelt rallied and eventually won on the final play.

Both teams are now 3-1 this season.

    3A: (2) Mead 38, (9) Longmont 14

Mead football continued its perfect start, beating No. 9 Longmont to improve to 4-0 this season.

The Mavericks, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter on their cross-town rivals, and went on to win 38-14.

Longmont did cut that early lead to 21-14 late in the second quarter, but Mead’s defense didn’t allow the Trojans to score again.

“Our defense had our back all night,” Mead quarterback Tyler Keys told BoCoPreps.com after the game.

Keys threw a passing touchdown and rushed for another for the Mavericks. Evan Hansen, Jake Wachter and Nathan Mackey also had rushing touchdowns. Dom Esters caught the touchdown from Keys.

Longmont quarterback Oakley Dehning rushed for a touchdown.

This was just the second-ever meeting between the two schools which are just 15 minutes apart. Mead won last season, 49-35, during its march to the semifinals.

    2A/3A: (2) Bayfield 20, (8) Durango 13

For the first time in the history of the rivalry — which dates to 1924! — Bayfield beat Durango.

Bayfield senior Hunter Killough had a game-sealing interception in the game’s final moments, according to the Durango Herald.

“I wanted it bad,” he told the paper after the game. “Since last year, I had been stewing on this game. It’s good to get that victory.”

  • No. 1 Holy Family football escapes No. 5 Fort Morgan in 3A clash

    Fort Morgan Holy Family football
    (Cannon Casey/CHSAANow.com)

BROOMFIELD — Early in the fourth quarter, Holy Family’s Matteo Lonardo found himself at the bottom of the pile with a fumble recovery.

“I wasn’t going to let go of that ball,” Lonardo said. “I’ve never fought for anything harder in my life than in the bottom of that pile.

“I knew after that we had all the momentum. I knew (the offense) would go down and do their job because they’re the best offense out there.”

Holy Family, newly-minted as the No. 1 team in Class 3A football, took advantage of the timely turnover and drove the ball down for the eventual game-winning touchdown in a 16-13 win over No. 5 Fort Morgan.

“I wasn’t surprised when they came up with that turnover,” Quarterback Stone Samaras said. “I’m grateful for my defense and I’m glad they were able to get us out there and we were able to capitalize.”

Samaras found Kyle Helbig in the back of the endzone for a 16-yard touchdown pass on third down. The Samaras to Helbig touchdown gave Holy Family its first lead with 7:50 in the 4th quarter.

The Tiger defense rose to the occasion again. An intentional grounding in the endzone gave Holy Family a safety and put them up by three points.

“Sometimes defense makes mistakes, sometimes offense makes mistakes,” Lonardo said. “We just have to stick up for the other side when they’re falling short. Today, the defense did that.”

With Fort Morgan facing a pivotal first-quarter fourth down in Holy Family territory from the 33, Holy Family’s Mitchell Guyot intercepted the pass off a deflection.

But, there was a flag for pass interference on the play.

Fort Morgan took advantage of the drive extending penalty with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Linker to Grayson Garver on a fade route.

At the end of the third quarter, Holy Family had a 3rd and goal from the one-yard-line, down 13-7. The Tigers ran it in for a game-tying touchdown, but an illegal shift set them back to the six.

The Fort Morgan defense stepped up and got two straight sacks on third and fourth down that had the Mustangs taking the ball over on the 25 when it was all said and done.

Fort Morgan put an emphasis 0n limiting Kyle Helbig and Stone Samaras, and boy did they. In the first half, Samaras and Helbig connected just once.

“That was the one positive play of the entire half,” Samaras said. “Coming out into the second half, we had a new mindset. We were going to restart 0-0.”

Helbig ran a stop-and-go route and a Samaras pump fake got a rusher to leave his feet. Samaras floated the ball to Helbig for a 46-yard gain, but the Tigers were unable to take advantage of the momentum.

A Lonardo 45-yard field goal fell short and kept Holy Family off the scoreboard. Holy Family’s first-half drives went: Punt, interception, punt, punt, missed field goal, interception, interception.

But, it was a Fort Morgan turnover that let Holy Family into the game.

“Thank God for our defense because they kept us in the game,” Samaras said. “We knew we had to play our game, and we came out in the second half and that’s what we did.”

A fumble on the opening kick of the second half gave Holy Family the ball on the 24. Later in the drive, Mitchell Guyot took a handoff six yards and suddenly the Fort Morgan lead was just six points.

“I really think that fumble recovery sparked us,” Samaras said. “Kyle’s play brought us alive.”

Fort Morgan took over on the 20 after the missed field goal and the Tiger defense pushed the Mustangs back to their own 15. A 79-yard pass from Isaac Linker to Jacob Ortega gave Fort Morgan first and goal from the six.

An Adam Cardona 25-yard field goal put Fort Morgan up 10-0.

Andrew Monroe intercepted a Samaras pass and returned it to the 50 on Holy Family’s next drive, and Fort Morgan began driving with the clock winding down before halftime.

A wild series of plays had the Mustangs jogging into the locker room up 13-0.

Holy Family’s Coby Hsin picked off the pass with six seconds left in the half, but on the next play, Linker returned Samaras’ pass 42 yards for a pick six. A penalty negated the touchdown, but Fort Morgan was given one untimed down, and they extended their lead with it.

Jose Jimenez put a 33-yard field goal through the uprights as the half ended.

“During halftime, we were talking about how we’ve been here before,” Lonardo said. “We’ve been down more points than this. We never put our heads down or anything. We were confident and we came out and just wanted to play ball.”

Holy Family came out looking like an entirely different team. They controlled the pace, forced turnovers and put points on the board.

“We came together as a team in the second half,” Samaras said. “Our defense held it together and we came together as a group to come away with it.”

  • Football preview: The state has a wealth of talent at offensive line

It may not be the flashiest, but it’s arguably the most necessary.

No, they’re not going to rush for 1,800 yards or find a receiver that makes a tip-toe catch at the pylon. What they will do is make all that possible. They’ll create the hole, they’ll protect the pocket for the quarterback to make that throw.

They’re offensive linemen and the depth Colorado has at the position is unbelievable. And it will be for the foreseeable future.

“The talent this year is very deep in the younger ranks,” said former NFL offensive lineman Matt McChesney, owner of Six Zero Strength, which trains many of the top linemen in the state. “I think the state of Colorado is very deep with big guys, especially offensive linemen.”

Take the 1,590 yards Highlands Ranch’s Kobe Eller rushed for in 2016.

“Pretty much any running back in the state would love to run behind this line,” Highlands Ranch coach Mark Robinson said. “You’d have to be crazy not to want to run behind them.”

Eller had Austin Johnson, Drake Nugent and Jaden Walker creating holes and taking defenders multiple yards up the field.

“Austin Johnson might be the best player in the state of Colorado,” McChesney said. “He’s a fifteen-year-old grown man. He thinks differently, he acts differently. (Nugent) is the same way. They’re best friends, they feed off of each other.

“Both of those kids are absolute freaks, and the work ethic of both of them is just ridiculous. That’s what sets them apart.”

Robinson spoke on Walker and his role with the Falcons.

“Jaden Walker, he’s at center, guard combination,” Robinson said. “I don’t think there’s a better one in the state of Colorado.”

As for leadership, Robinson said Nugent is more of a vocal leader than Johnson and Walker.

“Drake is more of the vocal leader,” Robinson said. “Austin Johnson is a leader, just through his actions. They’re both very explosive off of the ball.”

Robinson added on the three linemen, “You put those three together, what it gives us is a lot of confidence having those guys in front of them.”

Johnson, Nugent and Walker lead in a different way. They lead in the weight room, they lead with their work ethic.

“What they really do is they push you in the weight room. They’re great weight room leaders,” Robinson said. “It pushes the rest of the team. They just go to work. I call them ‘bring your lunch pale’ type guys.”

For No. 9-ranked Highlands Ranch, the strength of the team lies in that offensive line.

“As far as our biggest strength, I would say, definitely our offensive line,” Robinson said. “You can break it right down and pinpoint it to that. A really solid offensive line.”

The athletes at offensive line across the state span from Mullen’s Florian McCann III, a CSU committ, to Air Force committ Blake Carrette.

“(Carrette) is a very multidimensional player that plays tackle for Mike Campbell at Arapahoe,” McChesney said. “He’s one of my guys in here that’s been grinding for almost three years for his opportunity.”

Said McChesney on McCann III: “He’s really a damn fine player, big body.”

McChesney, an alum of Niwot High School who played at CU, is excited about this wealth of talent, which should say a lot coming from a former NFL offensive lineman.

“Gavin Singer is a big tackle at Columbine,” McChesney said. “He might be the nastiest guy in the state. Very versatile, he can play right tackle, guard, center. It’s just a matter of time before the Mountain West or a Power 5 school gets a hold of him.”

Eaglecrest has a 6-foot-6, 265-pound lineman in Barrett Miller.

“(Miller) is very fluid, heavy hands, good feet, super athlete and great hips,” McChesney said. “He’s a huge prospect at Eaglecrest. He’s another nasty one. I always have to tell him we can’t hurt people in the gym, and to back off.”

McChesney spoke on the offensive line talent that Cherry Creek has with Mike Lynn and Carson Lee.

“(Lynn has) an extremely good punch, violent hands,” McChesney said on the six-foot-seven, 300 pound tackle. “He works five days religiously on top of what he does at Cherry Creek.”

“(Lee) is just born nasty. He’s got three more years to develop. The sky is the limit for Carson, he’s got big legs, broad shoulders.”

There’s returning first team all-stater Max Bruner at Ponderosa, Jacob Wilton at Brighton and many more.

McChesney builds a family with these big linemen and often utilizes the phrase, “Dungeon Family.”

“When I say Dungeon Family, it’s truly a family,” McChesney said. “I have your back, you have my back. You’re going to sell out for me, I’m going to sell out for you.

“Family holds eachother accountable, family helps eachother, family has eachother’s back.”

These linemen will be able to showcase their true talent on the field starting on Thursday, the beginning of Zero Week.
