  • Standley Lake football hoping for first playoff appearance since 2013

ARVADA — Standley Lake football has been chomping at the bit for a playoff appearance for several years.

The Gators’ 32-7 victory over George Washington on Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex pretty much sealed the deal on Standley Lake (8-2, 4-1 in Class 4A Mountain League) getting a postseason bid.

“It’s crazy. We’ve been trying to meet the expectations of what the coaches want from us,” Standley Lake senior Logan Heeren said. “We aren’t really a big team, but we are a blue-collar team. We play as hard as possible.”

Standley Lake entered Week 10 action sitting at No. 12 in the all important RPI standings. The Gators finished second to Fruita Monument (10-0, 5-0) in the 4A Mountain League. While the Wildcats grab the automatic bid, Standley Lake has made a strong case on the field to make the state tournament for the first time since 2013.

“It’s good. It’s nice to be back where we’d like to be every year,” Standley Lake coach Don Morse said. “It will be a good experience for them. We are young so to at least get this (playoffs) taste in their mouth. Depending on the match-up, hopefully go out and compete with somebody.”

The Gators’ two losses this season have come against Fruita and 5A’s Arvada West. Fruita will likely grab one of the top seeds in the 4A state tournament. A-West looks to be a shoo-in to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2010 after a 7-3 record.

“We just want this playoff game and put up a fight,” Heeren said.

After back-to-back .500 seasons, the Gators will no doubt be seeded in the 16-team Class 4A football state tournament when brackets are reveled Sunday, Nov. 5, on CHSAANow.com.

Standley Lake jumped out to a 19-0 halftime lead over George Washington (2-8, 1-4). Junior quarterback Anthony France threw first-half touchdown passes to Heeren (12 yards) and junior Tyler Williams (32 yards) to open up a 13-0 lead.

“I might of bobbled it and then got popped,” Heeren said of his touchdown catch. “I got into the end zone so it was all worth it.”

Junior Brady Kizer scored on a 6-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes before halftime to take a 19-0 lead into the locker room.

The one negative of the first half was Standley Lake’s leading rusher Ty Webber suffered a leg injury on his first carry. Morse had to go to running back by committee with Webber out.

“It was rough,” Heeren said of Webber getting injured on his first carry. “You can’t get down or get scared. You just have to play.”

George Washington showed some fight in the second half. The Patriots pulled off a long touchdown pass from quarterback Jaydon Green to junior Andreas Kasum to cut the Gators’ lead to 19-7 early in the third quarter.

Standley Lake answered on the final play of the third quarter with a long touchdown run by senior Draven Rabideau to give the Gators a 25-7 cushion headed to the final quarter. Rabideau sealed the win with a 9-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes to make the final score 32-7.

  • Football roundup: Windsor clinches league title with OT win over Skyline

Windsor broke up a two-point conversion attempt in overtime to seal a wild 56-55 win over Skyline and wrap up the Northern League championship on Friday.

The fifth-ranked Wizards had led 49-33 with 5:47 remaining, but Skyline came storming back to tie the game at 49 following two touchdowns and two-point conversions.

Windsor scored first in overtime — quarterback Connor Apodaca faked a handoff up the middle and ran to an open end zone to his left — but No. 10 Skyline again responded. The Falcons’ Nathan McGregor hit Austin Robison on a play-action pass on fourth-down.

Skyline then went for two, its fourth such attempt of the game. This time the pass was broken up in the left side of the end zone. According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan, it was senior Bryce Kellum who had the big play.

The result was a Windsor win, and a conference championship. The Wizards are now 8-1 this season, and 4-0 in their league. Every other Northern team has at least two league losses.

Skyline is now 7-2, including 2-2 in the Northern.

“It was awesome,” Kellum told the paper of the win. “Just awesome.”

Windsor led 35-20 at halftime, a lead secured by a key interception from junior Tayt Gallatin in the end zone.

Noah Montague had two rushing scores for the Wizards, including a 91-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Salazar also rushed for two touchdowns, according to the Coloradoan’s Kevin Lytle.

Skyline’s star running back Jeremy Hollingsworth had two touchdowns. McGregor had four total touchdowns, including a pass to Jack Wathen with 15.7 seconds left in regulation that helped tie the game.

    • No. 7 Kit Carson advanced to the quarterfinals with a 46-12 win over Cotopaxi.
    • The remaining six first-round games are on Saturday.
    • Here’s an updated 6-man bracket.

    Notables:

    • 4A No. 4 Fruita Monument wrapped up its first conference title since 2002, according to Matt Meyer of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, with a 50-16 win over George Washington.
    • 3A No. 7 Canon City locked up at least of share of the Southern League with a 48-7 win over Woodland Park. The Tigers also hold a potential tiebreaker with a win over Discovery Canyon last week.
    • 5A No. 4 Columbine is now in the same position in the Mount Cameron Conference, sitting at 4-0 after a 50-0 win over Mountain Range on Friday. The Rebels hold a potential tiebreaker over Fairview (which is 3-1 in league play).
    • In 8-man, No. 3 Merino beat No. 9 Haxtun 39-24.
    • No. 8 Burlington edged No. 5 Limon 29-28. “It was a great ballgame that could’ve gone either way,” coach Glynn Higgs told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show.
    • 8-man No. 2 West Grand cruised to a 52-0 win over No. 6 Gilpin County.
    • Another top-10 clash in 8-man, where No. 10 Sargent rolled past No. 8 Mancos 54-14.
    • The 2A game between Pagosa Springs and Montezuma-Cortez was delayed following a power outage in the first half. The delay lasted 45 minutes. Pagosa ultimately won 48-7.
    • In 1A action, Wray beat rival county rival Yuma 19-7 to retain the Harvest Cup.
    • Another 1A game: Cedaredge and Hotchkiss were scoreless in regulation, and then Cedaredge won in overtime, 3-0.

  • Football roundup: No. 1 Kent Denver beats No. 4 La Junta in state title rematch

Eagle Valley Kent Denver football Scott Yates
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

After failing to beat La Junta twice last year, Kent Denver needed this one. And with a late field goal, the top-ranked team in the Class 2A CHSAANow.com football poll got it.

The Sun Devils came away with a 10-7 win over the Tigers to somewhat avenge last year’s defeats, the latter of which came in the 2A state title game.

“Anytime you lose the state championship game you have a bad taste in your mouth,” Kent Denver coach Scott Yates said. “All our kids and coaches wanted to try and erase it.”

The win is the 319th for Yates, who remains tied with West Grand’s Chris Brown for the most in state history.

The Tigers (3-1 overall) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.

    But the lead wouldn’t hold.

Kent Denver (4-0) was able to tie the game before halftime and the two teams came out unwilling to give each other any more points.

Still locked in a 7-7 tie, it was Kent Denver who would get the edge as Quinn Voboril kicked a late field goal which proved to be the game winner.

“We had to stop them in order to get the ball with enough time to go down the field. That created a little momentum for us,” Yates said. “It gives you an uplift and said let’s do something with it. We marched the ball down the field pretty well.”

The Sun Devils open league play next week when they hit the road and travel to Elizabeth. The Tigers also begin league play next week, hosting TCA.

    8-man: (8) Hoehne 44, (2) Daypsring Christian 37

Hoehne built a 22-8 lead at halftime, but Dayspring Christian did everything possible to make up ground in the second half. But 22 points in the third quarter alone wasn’t going to cut it.

The Farmers were able to put up 22 more points in the second half and finish off the upset over 8-man’s second-ranked team.

Senior Jacob Yates had 202 yards and two touchdowns for Hoehne. Kyle Rowe also rushed for two scores, and Riley Hudson added one.

Christian Still, a freshman, tossed three touchdown passes for Dayspring Christian — all of them to senior Jimmy Fargo.
