  • All-state boys swimming and diving teams for the 2017 season

The 2017 all-state boys swimming teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.

Swimmers of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced at the state meet. This means that they received the full amount of team points from individual events they swam in, as well as one-fourth of the total points earned by the team in relays they swam in.

Divers of the year were selected by finish at the state meet. Coaches of the year were voted upon by coaches at the state meet.

HIGHLANDS RANCH — ThunderRidge boys basketball cruised to a 93-50 win over Liberty on Saturday. The Grizzlies took 19 from Kaison Hammonds and Corey Seng to get ahead and stay ahead. Hammonds hit five three-pointers in the game.

  • Poloa, Noti lead No. 5 Doherty girls basketball over Liberty

COLORADO SPRINGS — Doherty’s entire starting lineup was forced out of the game due to a uniform violation. So when they re-entered moments later, they were all business in a 57-43 win over Liberty on Thursday.

The win gives the Spartans a two-game cushion in the Class 5A Colorado Springs Metro League and they are now winners of seven straight contests.

“We knew that if we came out slow on Liberty, there would be a good chance that it would be a close game,” Kalani Poloa said. “We knew if we came out hard and pressured them the way we did we could get a head start and push up the score the way we did.”

The game got off to a clunky start with officials noticing that the CHSAANow.com No. 5-ranked Spartans (15-1 overall, 6-0 CSML) had the waistband of their shorts rolled up, a violation of uniform rules. The entire lineup had to be subbed out of the game.

When the starters got back into the game they took no prisoners on either end of the floor. They seemed to score at will, while their zone press gave the Lancers (10-6, 4-2) fits.

By the end of the first quarter, the Spartans built a 17-8 with Kalani Poloa scoring nine of her 17 points in the quarter.

Doherty was able to balance the offensive effort in the post, finding Aubrianna Noti in the post often. She scored a team-high 17 to and was able to limit the damage Liberty could in the paint.

“They can’t stop our big inside,” Doherty coach Pat McKiernan said. “Every time we went inside we got something good out of it.”

It looked like the bulk of the offense was going to come from 3-point range as Jordan Valentine knocked down two deep balls early. But the constant pressure on the Liberty offense limited her to only one basket the remainder of the game.

“At first we played a zone. We didn’t think Jordan was going to hit them right away,” Poloa said. “After we saw her hit those hit threes, we switched to a man and kept her away from the 3-point line.”

They were forced to get their points through another means and it was Jayda Lyon who stepped up, leading the all scorers with 21.

“The nice thing about our group is that we have a lot of different types of players that can do different things,” Liberty coach Kyle Spencer said. “We don’t have to put all the pressure on one player.”

    But Lyon’s 21 weren’t enough.

By the time the game was headed into the fourth quarter, the Spartans had built a 41-27 lead. The Lancers were able to cut it to 11, but no closer.

The important takeaway from the game from Liberty’s standpoint was seeing one of the top teams in state. They’ll see Doherty again on Saturday, but if Liberty hopes to do some damage in the state playoffs, they know the level of play they have to maintain.

“We had a lot of growth against a team that is top-six right now in RPI,” Spencer said. “To be able to compete a little bit at that level, it’s good for us to know what it looks like.”

  • Liberty boys basketball looking like the real deal with win over Rampart

COLORADO SPRINGS — Things just got a little more interesting in the Colorado Springs Metro League.

With Doherty’s solid play all season and Rampart coming off a championship performance in their own tournament – which included wins over defending Class 4A champion Pueblo West and defending 3A champion Colorado Springs Christian School – it was starting to look a two-horse race.

But Liberty’s 80-73 win over Rampart on Thursday night may have changed that. The Lancers (8-4 overall, 3-0 5A CSML) suddenly look like legitimate contenders.

“Absolutely,” Liberty coach Ivan Chambers said. “Look at it. We beat Vista Ridge by 24 and Vista Ridge turns around and beats Doherty. Rampart beats Vista Ridge by one. Now look who’s taking control.”

    And take control they did.

The Lancers built an early 18-9 lead, but found themselves heading into the locker room trailing 40-34 at halftime.

In order to turn the game around, they had to start getting production from its back court. The trio of Moz Doria, Matt Kirk and Sean Bohuslavsky combined for 52 points of the team’s total offense.

“It’s a team game,” Doria said. “We have to be able to play well together and that I think that’s what helped us in this game.”

All in all, Liberty took Rampart by surprise a little bit. The Rams came in with a distinct height advantage with Jackson Ehrlin standing at 6-foot-8 and Dawson Carper towering at 6-foot-11.

They each scored 21 points, more than doing what they needed to offensively, but it was on the other end of the floor that coach J’on St. Clair wasn’t pleased with.

“Our defensive effort has to improve,” he said. “They got more baskets in transition than I anticipated so that’s not very good. They made timely shots and uncontested shots. That’s just poor defense.”

A Jeremiah Pruitt 3-pointer in the fourth quarter increased the Liberty lead to 66-56. The transition defense continued to be a problem as a steal and a fast break gave a Doria a crowd-pleasing dunk.

“I love putting a smile on my teammates’ face,” Doria said. “It felt great.

Rampart would make one last effort to claw back Carper would hit a shot down low, drawing a foul in the process. The made free throw put the Rams within four, but they still struggled defensively.

Kyle Bohuslavsky would sink three clutch free throws at the end and at the final buzzer, the landscape of the Metro League was suddenly a little different.

“At the beginning of the season, we knew what we were capable of,” Doria said. “We knew we were under the radar for a while and we just came out and played some small ball and it feels great knowing we can hang with these teams.”

The Lancers will travel to Pine Creek next before hosting Coronado. Their next big test looms when they see Doherty twice in four days.

And they will see Rampart again on Feb. 7.

The Rams will be ready for the rematch. They have to be ready for the rematch in order to regain hopes of bringing home a league title.

“They have to come to our place,” St. Clair said. “We’ll be ready when they come to our place.”

  • Cherry Creek volleyball has high expectations heading into regionals

Postseason volleyball gets under way this week and teams from all over the state will battle in hopes of advancing to next week’s state tournament at the Denver Coliseum.

One of the more interesting regions in the Class 5A field will be Region 11, which is hosted by Loveland High School.

At 20-3, the Indians come in as the high seed of the pool and have yet to lose a match to a non-league opponent but finished in fourth place in the extremely competitive Front Range League.

Cherry Creek come into the region with a 19-4 record, putting them at No. 16 in the state field. The record was good enough to finish third in another powerhouse league in the Centennial.

The lowest seed in the pool is No. 25 Liberty. The Lancers come into the weekend at 12-11 and finished fourth in the Colorado Springs Metro League.

The Bruins have high expectations for regional play as long time head coach Sally Moos is looking to lead her Bruins back to the Coliseum for the sixth year in a row.

“Our goal of going to state is solid in all of our minds,” senior libero Kate Chapman said. “We’re have trained for months to get to this point so we just have to play our game point by point.”

It’s also no secret that the Bruins have had success in regular season tournament play winning both the Cherry Creek Classic and Titan Classic this last weekend.

“We set the bar [high] with wins in those tournaments,” Chapman continued. “We now strive to surpass how we played then every time we step on the court.”

Games begin at 10 a.m. with Loveland taking on Liberty.

With three teams fighting for one spot emotions and energy will be high and only one team can keep its season alive.
