GOLDEN – With Manitou Springs needing a little bit of a spark Thursday night, Shelby Megyeri turned into a wrecking ball on both ends of the floor.

The sophomore was all over the place down the stretch for the Mustangs in the Class 3A state girls basketball quarterfinals, forcing turnovers, drawing fouls and driving to the basket for layups. Megyeri finished with a game-high 16 points, and Manitou Springs rode an impressive defensive performance to a 50-44 victory over Eaton and a berth in Friday’s semifinals at Lockridge Arena on the Colorado School of Mines campus.

“It’s a great feeling. I’ve never experienced it,” Megyeri said. “I’m only a sophomore and I’ve only been to state (once). We got to state last year but we lost our first game. This is a new feeling – it’s hard to explain, but I’ve got the chills thinking about it.”

Manitou Springs (23-2) takes on top-seeded Sterling (25-0) at 4 p.m., with Pagosa Springs (24-0) meeting Lutheran (24-1) at 7 p.m. in Golden.

“We’ve very excited. Sterling’s a great basketball team,” Mustangs coach Jon Asp said. “I feel like we rise to the occasion against good teams.”

Eaton led 37-32 late in the third quarter before Brooke Garretson knocked down a pair of free throws. Megyeri then picked off two passes that led to layups.

A Jayla Jarnigan 3-pointer put Eaton back up 42-38, but the Mustangs rallied again. After Shelby Hard cut the lead to two points, Megyeri and Garretson combined to score the team’s final 10 points.

Eaton was limited to only five points in the fourth quarter.

“From here on out we had eight strong teams, and I told the girls at halftime we can’t outscore any of these teams here,” Asp said. “We’ve got to step it up on the defensive end and that starts with boxing out. We boxed out awful that first half.”

Eaton junior Bailey Schumacher scored 13 points in the first half but was held scoreless over the final two quarters. Caiden Rexius added 11 points for the Reds.

“Eaton’s a strong team and I felt like they had the momentum most of the game,” Asp said. “But I think our advantage is we’ve won a lot of close games these last two years. We’ve been in a lot of tough games and we’ve been able to pull it out and win those.”

The Tigers remained undefeated thanks in large part to a first-quarter surge that saw Sterling outscore the Eagles 16-5.

Jenna Knudson led Sterling with 26 points, including a 14-of-17 effort from the free-throw line.

Molly Gillis led Liberty Common with 12 points.

Payton Shahan scored 16 points and Morgan Schaaf added 10 as the Pirates moved into the semifinals with an impressive showing against Centauri.

Schaaf added seven rebounds and six blocked shots.

The Falcons shot just 26.3 percent in the first half and 23 turnovers. Ember Canty led Centauri with 13 points.

Four Lions players finished in double figures as Lutheran rolled into the 3A semifinals one year removed from winning the 2A state championship.

Chandler Sturms led Lutheran with 16 points. Kaleigh Paplow and Kristen Vigil added 12 points each and Cara Thomas chipped in with 11 points.

Rangeview has joined this week’s Class 5A boys basketball ranking at No. 10.

The Raiders, who are riding an eight-game winning streak, totaled 18 points to crack CHSAANow.com’s ranking.

The 5A poll continued to be led by Regis Jesuit, which got 18 of the 20 first-place votes in the classification. ThunderRidge, which got the other two first-place votes, stayed put at No. 2. Those two teams play on Tuesday.

Overland bumped up one spot to No. 3, leaping Eaglecrest. Chaparral rounds out the top 5.

Also ranked this week in 5A: No. 6 Dakota Ridge, No. 7 Rock Canyon, No. 8 Denver East and No. 9 Fossil Ridge.

In 4A, Longmont extended its stay atop the poll. The Trojans are a unanimous pick with all 20 first-place votes following their one-point win over then-No. 2 Holy Family.

Golden returned to the No. 2 spot in 4A this week, just ahead of Holy Family, which fell to No. 3.

The 4A poll added Air Academy (No. 9) and Pueblo South (No. 10) this week.

For the third time in three weeks, there is a new No. 1 atop the 3A poll after Lutheran was upset by Jefferson Academy last week.

Faith Christian makes a return after garnering nine of the 15 first-place votes. Colorado Springs Christian, another former No. 1, got the other six first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Lutheran dropped to No. 3, while Jefferson Academy is No. 4.

That ranking added Alamosa (No. 10) this week.

Elsewhere, Resurrection Christian (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A) both stayed atop their respective rankings.

The 2A poll added Sedgwick County. 1A added Kit Carson. Both are ranked tenth this week.

For the second straight week, there’s a new team atop the Class 3A boys basketball rankings.

Lutheran knocked off Faith Christian, last week’s No. 1, with a 65-55 win on Saturday. Monday, the Lions received eight of the 14 first-place votes and totaled 128 points in taking over atop that poll.

Faith Christian dropped to second, just ahead of Colorado Springs Christian, which occupied the top spot prior to Faith. Colorado Academy, the preseason No. 1 team in 3A, is fourth this week and Jefferson Academy rounds out the top five.

With Lutheran, Faith, CA and Jefferson Academy all hailing from the 3A Metro, it means that league currently has four of the top five teams in 3A. No. 8 Kent Denver gives the league five ranked teams.

In 5A, Regis Jesuit remained a unanimous No. 1 pick. ThunderRidge (No. 2) and Eaglecrest (No. 3) continued to follow the raiders.

Overland bumped up one spot to No. 4, and Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

Chaparral also moved up, to No. 6, while Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 following its first loss.

Denver East is up to No. 8, Fossil Ridge is now No. 9 and Monarch joined the poll at No. 10.

The 4A poll continued to be led by Longmont. That ranking added No. 8 D’Evelyn and No. 10 Lewis-Palmer this week.

Resurrection Christian (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A) held firm atop their respective polls.

Troy Green (24) and Montbello are ranked No. 8 in Class 5A this week. (Dennis Pleuss)

Montbello and Mountain Vista have joined this week’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A.

The Warriors are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s rankings this week, while the Golden Eagles are No. 9. Both teams are 5-1.

That wasn’t the only change. Top-ranked Regis Jesuit and No. 2 ThunderRidge stayed put, but Overland moved up to No. 3 after a solid showing at an out-of-state tournament.

Chaparral moved into the top-5 following a big win over then-No. 3 Eaglecrest on Friday. Chaparral is No. 4 this week, Eaglecrest is No. 5.

Cherry Creek bumped up three places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge also moved up to No. 8 and Rock Canyon remained ranked at No. 10.

In 4A, the changes continued. Pueblo Central spear-headed the movement with its jump to No. 3 this week, while Mead (No. 6), Palmer Ridge (No. 8) and Evergreen (No. 10) are all newcomers.

Colorado Springs Christian (3A) and Sanford (2A) both stayed put atop their respective rankings this week.

In 1A, top-ranked McClave lost to unranked Wiley last week. As a result, McClave dropped to No. 6 and Wiley is No. 10 in this week’s poll.

It also left a gap at the top, where Sangre de Cristo is now the No. 1 team. But voters were split, as a total of six teams received first-place votes this week.

Arickaree/Woodlin (No. 8) also joined the 1A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Regis Jesuit now No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
Regis Jesuit is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A boys basketball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After last week’s big win, it was assumed that Regis Jesuit boys basketball would take over the top spot in Class 5A. Monday, the Raiders officially moved up.

Regis Jesuit received 15 of the 16 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll this week, and had 159 overall points. This came on the heels of a 3-0 week to open the season, which included a win over preseason No. 1 Overland.

But Regis was far from the only mover. ThunderRidge also started its season 3-0, and has jumped from preseason No. 5 to No. 2 this week. The 5A poll also added four new teams: No. 7 Aurora Central, No. 8 Dakota Ridge, No. 9 Cherry Creek and No. 10 Rock Canyon.

Things changed in 4A, too. Longmont stayed put as the No. 1 team, but there are three new teams — led by No. 2 Golden, which had an impressive opening week, including wins over Vista PEAK and then-No. 6 D’Evelyn. Also joining are No. 6 Pueblo Central and No. 8 Air Academy.

In 3A, there’s another new No. 1 team. Colorado Springs Christian assumes the top spot there after Colorado Academy lost to Fossil Ridge’s JV team last week.

  • Bassey, Colorado Academy boys basketball eager for another run at 3A title game

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t’s good to be wanted, a fact to which Justin Bassey can certainly attest.

The Colorado Academy junior is on the radar of a number of Division I colleges these days. Programs ranging from Harvard and Cornell to Gonzaga, Creighton and Vanderbilt, not to mention Colorado and Denver, are all interested in the 6-foot-4 standout.

But when the 2014-15 prep basketball season tips off in early December, Bassey has only one focus: Bringing the Class 3A state championship trophy back home with the Mustangs.

“It’s another thing to consider and contemplate,” Bassey said of the attention. “But during the season I don’t think my main focus will be college. It’s an exciting experience to have, but I also don’t want to allow that to sidetrack me from the current season.”

Colorado Academy comes into this winter with big ambitions after a one-point loss to Holy Family in the 3A state title game last March. The Mustangs had a final chance to take it all, but a last-second shot went off the back of the rim.

“Holy Family was kind of destiny. It was kind of their year. They were very good, very talented, very well-coached and had some really good senior leadership,” CA coach Steve Hyatt said. “We learned what it takes to get there. We know you’ve got to prepare every day and get better very day and focus on the process, not the product.”

“We don’t really care about win-loss records or rankings – all we want to do is try to hold that ball up at the end of the year.”

Holy Family moved up to the 4A classification this year, and Colorado Academy is among the early favorites to replace the Tigers as champions. In fact, on Monday, the Mustangs were ranked No. 1 in CHSAANow.com’s preseason poll.

Bassey, fellow junior Christian Hyatt and senior Chris Kuelling lead the way, with Bassey coming off a season in which he averaged 20.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

“Justin is definitely a special, special player,” Coach Hyatt said. “He’s an unbelievable athlete – he can play point guard, post up, shoot 3s and handle the ball.”

Christian Hyatt started as a freshman and averaged 14.5 points as a sophomore. Kuelling was right behind him with 14 points a game, shooting 51 percent from 3-point range and knocking down 90 3s on the season.

The team is still young with a lot of junior talent, including Peter Vukovich-Simonson, a transfer from Valor Christian; and Will Creedon, a 6-8 post who played junior varsity as a sophomore.

“We’re constantly hungry. We had 11 guys on varsity last year and only four of those guys left,” Bassey said. “So really we have seven guys returning to the team who still have that bitter taste in their mouth. We came so close to winning a state championship, but coming up short, that will be a major motivation for us coming this year.”

Colorado Academy lost its second-leading scorer in Jack Buckmelter, who transferred to Denver East. Bassey said it’s a big loss, but it will force the Mustangs to play a different style and create a different dynamic.

“We have a really strong group of guys. Pretty much the whole lineup, I’ve known them all since fourth or fifth grade,” he said. “Our relationship off the court really blossomed on the court. You can see that chemistry we have and the feeling we have for each other’s game.”

Hyatt said scoring won’t be an issue for the Mustangs, but depth and getting the younger talent ready to play will be an early focus. With teams like Colorado Springs Christian (preseason No. 2), Faith Christian (No. 3), Moffat County (No. 4), Jefferson Academy (No. 5) and 3A newcomer Lutheran (No. 6) in the mix, getting back to the 3A state title game will be a challenge.

To help it better prepare for that competition, Colorado Academy is taking part in early tournaments at Fossil Ridge and Mullen, playing a handful of 5A and 4A teams.

“We want to go play good competition,” Hyatt said. “I tell the kids we can go 0-9 and I don’t care; we can go 9-0 and I don’t care. The purpose is to get better and we need to play tough competition.”
