  • Baseball rankings: Three defending champions among preseason No. 1 teams

    Three defending state baseball champions are starting the season right where they left off. In the initial CHSAANow.com baseball rankings, Cherokee Trail, Valor Christian and Holly come in at No. 1 in their respective classes.

    Cherokee Trail beat Rocky Mountain for the Class 5A championship, Valor won two-straight games to beat Pueblo West for the 4A title and Holly claimed the 1A crown from Fleming.

    The Cougars claim the top spot of the 5A rankings with six first-place votes. Centennial League foe, Cherry Creek, sits right behind them at No. 2. The Bruins are looking to end a four-year championship drought in 2017.

    Last year’s runner-up, Rocky Mountain, starts the season at No. 3.

    Outside of the top three teams, only Rock Canyon (No. 7) and Pine Creek (No. 10) received first-place votes to start the season.

    In 4A, Valor Christian, led by new coach Brian Bonn, claimed nine first-place votes to start the season with No. 3 Pueblo West being the only other ranked team to receive one.

    Mountain View will start the year at No. 2 with Windsor and Longmont rounding out the top five.

    Erie takes the No. 8 spot, meaning that the final four teams that remained in the 4A state tournament on the final weekend will come into the season ranked and carrying high expectations.

    University will start the season as the No. 1 team in 3A. The Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals last year before losing 3-2 to Manitou Springs, who finished as the state runner-up.

    The Mustangs enter the season at No. 7.

    Delta, a 4A team a year ago, sits right behind Manitou at No. 8. Defending champion, Fatih Christian sits high in the rankings at No. 2 as they hope to defend their title.

    Paonia enters the season as the No. 1 team in 2A. It’s the same seed the Eagles took into last year’s state tournament where they were upset by Limon in the semifinals.

    The Badgers lost in the state championship game, but will enter the season with the No. 6 ranking.

    Defending champ, Dawson will start the season at No. 2.

    Sedgwick County took enough votes to claim the No. 4 spot to start the year. 

    Like Paonia, the Cougars went into last year’s state tournament with a high seed, only to be shocked in the semifinals.

    Holly was the only team in the preseason rankings to grab a unanimous No.1 ranking as the Wildcats took all nine first-place votes.

    State runner-up, Fleming, enters the season at No. 3 with Eads sliding into the No. 2 spot.

    Dove Creek starts the season at No. 7 after reaching the semifinal game last spring. They upset Granada in the first round of the tournament.

    Granada was the No. 1 seed in the bracket this year, but will start the 2017 season with the No. 5 ranking.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

    During the regular season, new polls are released each Monday.

  • State wrestling semifinals: Hunter Willits will wrestle for a fourth title

    DENVER — Hunter Willits will wrestle for a fourth-consecutive state championship on Saturday.

    The Pueblo County senior won his semifinal match at the state wrestling tournament in the Class 4A 152-pound bracket against Cheyenne Mountain’s Luke White. Willits won by a 10-3 decision.

    Willits will face Nathan Morris of Longmont in Saturday night’s final for a chance to become Colorado’s 20th four-time state wrestling champion. Morris beat Mead’s Caleb Mendez 4-3 in the semifinals.

    Willits won 4A 132 as a freshman, 138 as a sophomore, and 152 last year.

    To reach the semifinals, he pinned Grand Junction Central’s Shaun Stepisnik in the first round on Thursday, and Greeley Central’s Justus Strand in the quarterfinals earlier Friday.

    Notables

    • A great match in 5A 132 pitted two returning champions against one another in the semifinals. Pomona’s Theorius Robison beat Arvada West’s Dayton Marvel 9-3 to reach the final.
    • The 138 pound final in 4A will be something. It will match returning champion Chris Sandoval of Windsor against fellow returning champion Justin Davis of Pueblo County. Davis is also unbeaten.
    • Likewise, the 5A 182 final will be electric. Pueblo County’s Dante Garcia won a tiebreak to move to the 4A 182 final. He will face Glenwood Springs’ Myles Wilson. Both are returning champions.
    • The star-studded 3A 285 bracket lived up to its hype in the semifinals. Sheridan’s Ricky Ayala outlasted Bayfield’s Sam Westbrook 5-4 in the ultimate tiebreaker. Ayala will face Delta’s Logan Church in the final. Church knocked off the top seed in the quarterfinals.
    • In the 5A 170 pound semifinals, Grand Junction Central’s Erminio Barrera upset top-seeded and returning champion Garrett Niel of Pine Creek.
    • Pueblo County’s Grant Willits will wrestle for a third state championship. He beat Pueblo East’s Aaden Valdez 10-6 in the 4A 132 semifinal. Willits will face Cheyenne Mountain’s Mike McFadden, who beat Grand Junction Central’s Andrew Bench 4-2 in overtime.
    • Rocky Ford’s Jacob Rodriguez pinned his way to the 2A 106 final. The two-time returning champion beat Landen Mayberry of Hotchkiss in 1:01. He also pinned his opponents in the first round (14 seconds) and quarterfinals (45 seconds). Rodriguez will face John Mall’s Chris McKenna.
    • Greeley Central’s Josh Nira knocked off previously unbeaten Jace Trujillo of Pueblo East in the 4A 113 semifinals with a 10-4 decision. Trujillo was also a returning champion. Nira will face Pueblo County’s Josiah Nava in the final.
    • John Mall’s Jonathan Andreatta will wrestle for a third state title after beating Meeker’s Tannen Kennedy in the 2A 126 semifinals with a 4-0 decision.
    • Isaiah Delacerda of Alamosa, a two-time champion, beat La Junta’s Isaiah Gamez in the 3A 113 semis.
    • Also aiming for a third state title is Fort Lupton’s Jody Sandoval, and he will get a shot at it after his win in the 3A 126 semifinals.
    • Grand Junction’s Josiah Rider tore his way through the 145 bracket in 5A, getting his third pin of the tournament in the semifinals. Rider will face Ponderosa’s Parker Benekas in the final.
    • Returning champion Aaron Trujillo picked up his third pin of the bracket in the 3A 145 semis, winning in 58 seconds. He will face Centauri’s Brandon Buhr, who pinned his opponent in 37 seconds.
    • Rocky Ford’s Dillon Jaramillo reached the 2A 113 final when he pinned Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Kolton Dickinson with just two seconds remaining in the match.
    • Cody Venem of Rocky Ford beat Hotchkiss’ Cody Hall in overtime, 5-3, to reach the 2A 132 final.
    • Mesa Ridge’s Elijah Valdez moved to the 4A 145 final with a 4-1 tiebreak win over Mountain View’s Erik Contreras. In the championship match, he will face Niwot’s Tommy Stager, who is trying to become his school’s first champion since 1993.
    • Hayden’s Christian Carson won in overtime to advance to the 2A 195 final, where he will meet John Mall’s Jason Murphy.
    • Three Unified wrestling matches were held as exhibitions prior to the semifinals.
    • One of the officials at the state wrestling tournament is Mikael Smith, the Nucla grad who won four state titles from 2002-05.

    Team races

    • 2A: Meeker heads the pack with 127 points. John Mall (120) and Rocky Ford (118.5) are close behind.
    • 3A: Valley leads with 85.5 points. Alamosa and Jefferson (75) are tied for second, and Centauri (73) sits in third.
    • 4A: Pueblo County is way out in front with 183 points. Cheyenne Mountain (88) is second, with Pueblo East (80) and Greeley Central (74.5) close behind them.
    • 5A: Pomona sits in first place with 148.5 points. Grand Junction is in second with 103.5. Brighton (81.5), Poudre (78), Coronado (74.5) and Cherokee Trail (72) have also amassed a lot of points.

    ARVADA — Pomona sophomore Theorius Robison had enough in the tank Saturday night to do a backflip after winning the 132-pound title at the Arvada West Wrestling Invite.

    “Wrestling can get emotional,” Pomona coach Sam Federico said about Robison’s match which was the highlight of the finals. “You try to keep things calm, but you never know. Sometimes it goes crazy. A finish like that is always exciting.”

    Last year’s 126-pound 5A state champion and top ranked 132-pounder in Tim Yount’s On the Mat rankings let his emotions get away from him a little bit after defeating No. 2 ranked Grand Junction’s Dylan Martinez. However, Robison was clearly focused on the future moments after the come-from-behind victory.

    “That was a big win, but I’ve got to just keep on getting ready for state. I know he (Martinez) is already working on stuff to get me back at state,” Robison said. “I’m trying to defend my title at state. I’ll keep working hard, but that was a big win.”

    Robison trailed 5-0 late in the second period. It appeared he scored a 1-point escape, 2-point takedown and 3-point near-fall in the final moments of the second period, but after the two officials talked it over the near-fall was ruled to have happened after time expired in the period.

    Martinez led 7-6 with 8 seconds left in regulation time and with a restart in the neutral position. Robison made one last-ditch effort to take the victory. The sophomore was able to get a last-second takedown to grab a 8-7 victory.

    “I kind of knew he was going to back up,” said Robison, who improved to 18-1 on the season. “I came in hard and it just happened the way it happened. That’s the way is was supposed to go.”

    Robison was one of four Panthers to take home first-place titles at the annual A-West Invite. Sophomores Justin Pacheco (113) and Colton Yapoujian (120), along with seniors Jason Romero (160) and Brandon Micale (285) joined Robison on top of the podium at the end of the night.

    “All in all we wrestled pretty good,” Federico said. “We still have some improvement to do like everyone else here. We are wrestling pretty good.”

    The Panthers had seven wrestlers in the finals and captured the team title with 196.5 points. The top-ranked team in 5A faced a tough field with 5A’s No. 2 Grand Junction, No. 3 Grandview, No. 6 Castle View, No. 7 Coronado and No. 9 Adams City all at the tournament that has been called the “mini-state” in the past.

    The Panthers weren’t completely at full strength. Pomona was missing its 106 and 145 pounders.

    Pacheco won one of the deepest brackets in the tournament. Five of the top seven ranked 5A wrestlers at 113 pounds made it a tough road for everyone. The sophomore took a 4-0 decision over Coronado’s Steve Dabelko in the final.

    Yapoujian could likely moved up to No. 1 at 120 after winning another competitive bracket. The sophomore pinned Jefferson’s Jimmy Ramirez III in the championship bout at the 59 second mark.

    Romero, a two-time state runner-up, had a tough match against Grand Junction’s Jay Skalecki. The senior was able to take a 4-2 victory on his journey to hopefully that first state title.

    “Going up to 160s for the first weekend was a little different,” Romero said. “I was a little banged up from the tournament we just came from, but I was able to finish strong.”

    Pomona senior Brandon Micale wrapped up the tournament with a 6-3 victory over Castle View’s David Nuriyev in the heavyweight bout. Micale came in ranked No. 4 at 220, but wrestled in the heavyweight class on Saturday.

    “He (Micale) is a strong kid, but you are having to push around some big kids,” said Federico, who added he might keep Micale at heavyweight for the rest of the season. “He is used to doing it in football, but it’s a little different in wrestling. We’ll see.”

    The next tournament up for Pomona is the two-day Top of the Rockies Tournament at Centaurus High School this coming Friday and Saturday.

  • All-state football teams for 2016 season

    The 2016 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • 4A softball roundup: Mountain View tops Mullen to reach semifinals

    AURORA — Last week, Mountain View stumbled a bit in its softball regional, dropping the second game of the tournament to Frederick.

    But the state tournament would be an entirely different story. After beating Discovery Canyon 8-2 in the first round, the Mountain Lions came away with a more decisive (and stunning) win over No. 2 Mullen, 15-4 to advance to the Class 4A semifinals.

    “When you play some of these teams here and you’ve seen their scores and seen their records, you don’t know who they are,” coach Randy Felton said. “We hit well today. We made routine plays and sometimes the routine plays open up big innings.”

    And they wasted no time in getting those big innings going.

    Mountain View jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning and quickly increased it to a 8-1 lead by the fourth.

    The Mountain Lions added five more runs in the fifth and had a chance to close the door early on the Mustangs, but Mullen showed some resiliency and tacked on three of their own to force another inning.

    But Mountain View’s bats refused to cool down and they snagged two more runs and came out in the bottom of the sixth and held off any chance for a Mullen rally to take the win and advance to the semifinals on Saturday.

    “We were pretty nervous,” shortstop Izzy Griego said. “It’s hard going into a game and being a lower seed than the team you’re playing. But scoring five in the first inning, the pressure was lifted off our pressure a bit.”

    Griego was huge on offense for the Mountain Lions, hitting two triples and a double while driving in three RBIs.

    Tara Shadowen added four RBIs of her own in the winning effort.

    Next up for Mountain View is No. 3 Valor Christian. The semifinals will begin play at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

    Pueblo West jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but a solo home run by Rio Sanchez in the fifth inning sparked the Tigers. They would score five more before the Cyclones could retire the side and advanced to the semis with a 9-1 win.

    (3) Valor Christian 1, (11) Silver Creek 0

    Abby Zuschlag drove in Hannah Hollander in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 win and a chance to defend their 4A state title.

    (5) Air Academy 7, (4) Wheat Ridge 5

    Payton Romines launched a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Kadets into the semifinals following a heartbreaking early exit in 2015.

    The Kadets will face Erie at 10 a.m.

    AURORA — Strasburg, Erie and Broomfield are the No. 1 seeds in the regional softball brackets, which were released on Monday morning.

    All three teams held the top spot in their respective class in the final RPI standings of the regular season.

    Broomfield is 17-2-0 this season. The Eagles will host No. 32 Denver East, No. 16 Legacy and No. 17 Castle View in Region 1.

    Defending champion Mountain Range is the No. 26 seed.

    Erie is the lone remaining unbeaten team in any of the three classes at 19-0-0, and they are the No. 1 seed in 4A. They will host No. 32 Montrose, No. 16 Golden and No. 17 Berthoud in Region 1.

    Other hosts in 4A include Mullen, Valor Christian, Pueblo West, Wheat Ridge, Mountain View, Silver Creek and Conifer.

    Valor Christian is the defending champion.

    In 3A, Strasburg sits in prime position as it tries to defend its title. The team will host No. 16 Meeker and No. 17 Limon in its Region 1.

    Other hosts include Rocky Ford, Eaton, Brush, Lamar, The Academy, Basalt and Burlington. Valley also received a high seed, but isn’t hosting.

    The 3A field expanded to 24 teams this season, the most its ever had.
