  • Football rankings: 3A adds five new teams; Lakewood, Skyline also among newcomers

    There was all kinds of shakeup in this week’s football rankings.

    The Class 3A poll added five new teams: No. 4 Berthoud, No. 7 Roosevelt, No. 8 Skyview, No. 9 Harrison and No. 10 Canon City.

    Lakewood (5A), Skyline (4A), Crowley County (1A), Clear Creek (1A), Sargent (8-man) and Sierra Grande (6-man) are also new this week in their respective classifications.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football roundup: Greeley West knocks off 3A No. 1 Longmont; game called early due to nearby gas leak

    Greeley West football beat Longmont to move to 2-0 on Thursday night, taking down Class 3A’s top-ranked Trojans.

    The game had a weird ending: It was called with 2:39 remaining after the stadium had to be evacuated, according to the Greeley Tribune, because of a gas leak near the stadium.

    Afterward, Greeley West posted on its Facebook page that “small leak” had been capped.

    “The site is now secure and safe, according to fire authorities,” the school posted. “Sorry for the inconvenience and interruption to tonight’s Greeley West game. The emergency response was quick and safety was secured.”

    This marked the first time since 2009 that Greeley West, which plays in 4A, had beat Longmont. The two teams play annually, and Longmont had won seven-straight games between the two teams.

    Longmont actually led 14-0 in the first quarter before Greeley West rallied to tie the game at halftime.

    The Trojans again took the lead at 20-14 in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored the game’s final 20 points.

    Greeley West’s Derek West had two rushing touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a score, according to the Greeley Tribune.

    The Spartans are now 2-0, while Longmont fell to 1-1.

    3A/4A: Palisade 28, Montrose 27

    The Bulldogs scored 22 second-half points to rally from a 27-6 halftime hole and beat Montrose.

    Montrose, which plays in 4A, jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, but Palisade adjusted after the break. The rally started late in the third, with a rushing touchdown with 4 minutes to play in the frame.

    The Bulldogs, a 3A program, got another rushing score early in the fourth, then took the lead three minutes later on yet another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

    3A: (4) Silver Creek 45, Mountain View 33

    Silver Creek exploded for 22 second-quarter points en route to the 45-33 win over Mountain View.

    Andreik Knechtel and TJ Blazon each accounted for two touchdowns for the Raptors, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. Brandon Harper added a 98-yard kickoff return for a score.

    Notables

    • David O’Connell threw for 196 yards and four touchdowns as Golden beat Littleton 49-0. Colin Mulligan caught two of those touchdown passes.
    • Ho-hum, yet another high-scoring affair: Skyline beat Coronado 70-50. Jeremy Hollingsworth and Moses Rivera each had four touchdowns for Skyline, according to GazettePreps.com.
    • There were five shutouts on Thursday. Aside from Golden over Littleton, Thomas Jefferson beat Pueblo Central 68-0, Cherokee Trail beat Denver East 33-0, Horizon topped Overland 40-0, and Denver North beat Arvada 40-0.

  • New era officially begins for Golden football under Jared Yannacito

    ARVADA — It might seem like an eternity since Golden football played in the Class 4A state championship game in 2002.

    In fact, the starting quarterback for the Demons 15 years ago was Mark Melancon. Golden’s three-sport athlete has pitched for six Major League Baseball teams (New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals and San Francisco Giants) and been named to three MLB All-Star Games since Golden was edged by Monarch in the 2002 4A title game.

    It has been a struggle for the football program at Golden over the past several years. The last winning season for the team was in 2009.

    First-year coach Jared Yannacito, a Pomona High School graduate and former offensive coordinator for the Panthers, hopes to turn the Demons’ football program around from the ground up.

    “The thing as coaches we are building is just a family, building a team again,” Yannacito said after the Demons’ season opener Thursday night. “Our big motto has been ‘Close the gap’. I think fans saw it and coaches saw it. The kids played as hard as they could. I’m really proud of them.”

    Yannacito and his Demons officially kicked off the new era of Golden football against Skyline at the North Area Athletic Complex. The Falcons shut out the Demons 41-0 a year ago in the season opener. It was the beginning of a 1-9 season for Golden.

    It was a much different story this time around. The Demons actually led 13-12 at halftime. Golden kept it going in the third quarter too.

    Senior Joe Madsen caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback David O’Connell with 2:08 left in the third quarter to give the Demons a 27-20 lead.

    “I’m still in shock. I think it’s awesome that we were tied up with a team that beat us by almost 50 points last year,” said Madsen, who eight catches for 62 yards and was also an impact player on defense. “We were in contention to win it. This team is on the rise and I’m really proud to be a part of it.”

    While Golden had the feel-good story going through late in the third quarter. The Falcons showed they had the resilience to grab the momentum and game away from the Demons.

    Skyline scored four unanswered touchdowns from late in the third quarter until the final whistle to come away with a 48-27 victory.

    “I’ve been part of a new coaching staff. I understand the fire and excitement,” said Skyline junior running back Jeremy Hollingsworth, who finished with 12 carries for 91 yards and four touchdowns. “Golden played a great game, but I think we helped them out in the first half for sure.”

    Skyline junior quarterback Nate McGregor had an impressive game going 12-for-16 through the air for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed for 69 yards. Junior Kyle West was McGregor’s favorite target making nine grabs for 172 yards and a touchdown.

    “The offense that we run. What can you do to stop it? Pick your poison,” Hollingsworth said. “We are going to do it until teams stop us.”

    West did his part on defense to seal the win. His interception and 50-yard scamper into the end zone for a defensive score in the final minutes of the fourth quarter finished off the flurry of points by the Falcons.

    “They (Hollingsworth, McGregor and West) let us bring an exciting brand of football,” Skyline coach Michael Silva said. “If you play with energy and focus on all levels it’s fun to watch.”

    Silva admitted his players probably overlooked the Demons after the shutout win a year ago, but he was proud of how is team responded in the second half to pull out the victory. Skyline stays on the road as the Falcons face Coronado next Thursday at Don Breese Stadium in Colorado Springs.

    “Skyline is a heck of a football team,” Yannacito said. “They have some skill guys who can go the distance on any given play.”

    Golden hits the road next week to face Littleton on Thursday, Sept. 7.

    “Everyone tonight realizes — even if we didn’t come out with a victory — that the culture has changed,” Yannacito said. “It’s a new era. We have to let this soak in a little bit and get ready for Littleton next week.”

    The 2017 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

    Stratton/Liberty pulled off one of the biggest comebacks of the 2016 football season on Friday night.

    The Knighted Eagles trailed Cheyenne Wells 41-8 at one point in the second quarter, but scored the game’s final 41 points to rally and get a huge top-5 win in 6-man, 49-41.

    “A win like this could carry a team a long way,” Stratton/Liberty coach Toby Kechter told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It’s just the belief that they can do anything. They stay together as a team, don’t doubt each other or get mad at each other.”

    The Knighted Eagles scored just before halftime to cut it to 41-16, and then really came out firing in the third quarter.

    “They had the momentum the whole first half, and we got it back and our guys started believing and it just snowballed after that,” Kechter said. “There wasn’t no stopping us.”

    The game, Kechter said, was a “tail of two halves. I mean, we couldn’t do anything right the first half, and they couldn’t do nothing wrong. Then it switched the other way in the second half.”

    Stratton/Liberty tied the game up at 41 with a safety in the fourth quarter. It then held Cheyenne Wells and got the ball back.

    “We were just going to try and kick a field goal to win, but we snuck her in on a fullback dive, and we got the win,” Kechter said. “It was pretty exciting.”

    3A: (4) Pueblo East 24, Durango 20

    Josh Tellez scored the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute of the game to help the Eagles avoid an upset.

    Pueblo East led 10-0 at halftime, and pushed it to 17-0 with 6:56 to play in the third quarter.

    Durango then went on a tear and rallied to take the 20-17 lead by scoring 20 unanswered points. Its last score came with 3:02 to play, but then Pueblo East had a clutch drive to go take the lead and secure the win.

    4A: Monarch 24, (10) Skyline 13

    The Coyotes handed the Falcons their first loss of the season after jumping out to a 17-0 halftime lead.

    Skyline did cut it to 17-7 early in the third quarter, but Monarch responded to go back up by 17 points.

    “We had quite a few offensive snaps,” Monarch coach Phil Bravo told the Scoreboard Show. “When we know we can do that, we’re going to keep someone’s offense frustrated and off the field.”

    Monarch moved to 3-3 with the win, while Skyline is now 5-1.

    “We’ve been talking about it all week long, about … playing a team that just doesn’t know how to lose. They really haven’t,” Bravo said. “At 5-0, I mean, they just don’t understand what that loss column is all about. And a team that doesn’t know how to lose refuses to lose.

    “All in all, we played really well against a good football team,” Bravo said.

    5A: (7) Regis Jesuit 36, Legacy 8

    Regis Jesuit scored the game’s final 29 points en route to a 36-9 win over Legacy.

    The seventh-ranked Raiders, now 5-1, had a monster second half to come back to beat the Lightning, who dropped to 4-2.

    Legacy had leads of 3-0 and 9-7 in the first half, with the second lead holding up at halftime.

    But Regis Jesuit came out firing in the second half, including an early TD which game the Raiders a 15-9 lead, as well as a long interception return that pushed it to 22-9.

    With the win, Regis moved to 1-0 in the new Mt. Antero Conference.

    6-man: Hi-Plains/Flagler 82, (7) Arickaree/Woodlin 16

    The Patriots ran out to a hot start, and never really looked back in an upset performance that made a few dents in the record book.

    Hi-Plains/Flagler led 48-16 after the first quarter. The 48 points were the fourth-most in a single quarter, and the 64 combined points were the second-most in a quarter by two teams.

    At halftime, it was 64-16. The 64 points were tied for the sixth-most in a half by one team.

    In the end, the Patriots cruised to the 82-16 win.

    Notables

    • After an 0-3 start, 2A No. 10 Sterling won its third game in a row, beating Platte Valley 27-18. “They bounced back nice off the bye and we were able to take that week to get back to the basics, get back to some fundamentals, and just back to believing in ball again,” coach Rob Busmente told the Scoreboard Show. “The kids have responded really well.”
    • Holyoke upset 1A No. 6 Limon, 21-14.
    • In 8-man, No. 2 Sedgwick County rolled past No. 8 Haxtun, 56-6.
    • Another top-10 showdown in 8-man turned out to be pretty one-sided as No. 6 Akron beat No. 4 Merino 45-0.
    • In 3A, Evergreen is now 4-2 after beating Skyview 33-7. “I was very happy with the defense. We played physical,” coach Rob Molholm told the Scoreboard Show. “The defense played very consistent tonight, and very aggressive.”
    • Defending 1A champion Buena Vista has responded to a two-game losing streak with two straight wins. The Demons beat Colorado Springs Christian 34-29. “We gave away a few games, and now that should be far away from them,” Buena Vista coach Matt Flavin told the Scoreboard Show. “With this younger team, they just need to go out there and play and enjoy it and have fun. That’s kind of what we pushed this week.”
    • West Grand beat Plateau Valley 30-6, giving Chris Brown his state-leading 311th career win.
    • Kent Denver and coach Scott Yates (308 wins) play Ridge View Academy on Saturday.
    • 5A’s Cherry Creek, now 3-3, answered a few doubters about their No. 10 ranking with a dominant 42-7 win over Fossil Ridge (now 4-2).
