  • Football rankings: Silver Creek bumps up to No. 2 in 3A

    Silver Creek is playing its best football at the right time.

    And thanks to a 28-14 win over Fort Morgan on Friday, the Raptors jumped to No. 2 in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

    They are now firmly entrenched behind Discovery Canyon, which held on to its No. 1 spot thanks to a thrilling win over Lewis-Palmer.

    Rifle was the only new team to break into the 3A poll, coming in at No. 10.

    Pomona hung on to the top spot in the 5A rankings and Mullen was able to stay at No. 2 thanks a blocked extra point in overtime that gave the Mustangs a 28-27 win over No. 5 Columbine.

    The rest of the 5A rankings remained fairly consistent as no new teams broke into the poll.

    In 4A, Denver South, Chatfield and Pine Creek all held their spots at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

    Mesa Ridge made the biggest jump of the week, gaining two spots to come in at No. 8. Greeley West (No. 9) and Monarch (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A poll.

    La Junta remains the undisputed No. 1 team in 2A, receiving every first-place vote in the process.

    There were no new teams in the 2A rankings this week.

    Strasburg hangs to the No. 1 spot in 1A with Paonia still hanging right behind them at No. 2.

    Meeker was able to overtake Platte Canyon as the No. 3 team in the rankings with both teams still undefeated on the year.

    The 1A poll also had no new teams this week.

    Thanks to receiving eight of 12 first-place votes, Sargent is still the No. 1 team in the 8-man rankings.

    Akron jumped one spot to come in at No. 3 and at No. 9, West Grand is the only new addition to the 8-man poll.

    Fleming edged out Kit Carson by one vote to hang on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings.

    Stratton/Liberty still hangs tight at No. 3 as each of the top three teams in the poll remain undefeated.

    There were no new teams in the 6-man poll.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football roundup: Pine Creek runs away from Pueblo West in top-10 4A game

    Pine Creek made an absolute statement on the road on Friday, shutting out Pueblo West in a big top-10 football matchup in Class 4A.

    The Eagles, ranked No. 3, beat the No. 9 Cyclones 35-0. It is Pine Creek’s fourth win in a row since starting 1-2.

    “I thought our kids just came out and played well hard,” Pine Creek coach Todd Miller told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game. “We’ve made some changes since the beginning of the season, and our kids are kind of buying into it. They’re flying around, and we’re playing kind of old school Pine Creek football and getting real physical. We had some fun.”

    The two teams were scoreless after the first quarter, but Pine Creek’s Xavier Hill scored twice in the second quarter to give his team a 14-0 lead at halftime.

    Peter Isais, Damario Portillos and Wyatt Wieland also had touchdowns for Pine Creek.

    It was yet another solid defensive outing for the Eagles after giving up 50 points in a season-opening loss to Chatfield.

    “There’s no superstars on that defense, just a bunch of guys that run to the ball, hustle and they play every play,” Miller said.

    Miller added that he thinks his team still has more improving to do.

    “We’ve got a lot to do,” he said. “We can get a lot better. I think we haven’t played our best football. We’re playing pretty good, but there’s a lot of steps we need to take to play that championship-caliber football that I think a lot of teams in the state are capable of. We’re on our way. It’s just one step at a time.”

    4A: Greeley West 30, (4) Broomfield 29

    Greeley West led 23-8 as the fourth quarter opened, then held on for dear life to secure the upset win.

    “It ended up going our way tonight,” Spartans coach Jason Renouf told the Scoreboard Show. “It was a close game.”

    Broomfield scored on the first play of that final frame to make it 23-15, only to see Greeley West respond on Darren Delacroix’s second touchdown of the game.

    But Broomfield cut the the lead to 30-23 with 2:53 remaining, and recovered the ensuing onside kick. They scored again, but failed on the two-point conversion attempt that would have given the Eagles the win.

    “It was a wild finish,” Renouf said. “Broomfield’s a good team. They don’t quit. They have a solid passing attack, and they unleashed it there in the fourth quarter.”

    “We just held them when we needed to,” Renouf added.

    Greeley West led 16-0 at halftime, including a second-quarter safety.

    3A: (5) Silver Creek 28, (2) Fort Morgan 14

    This game was back-and-forth all night, but Silver Creek ultimately pulled it out.

    Silver Creek got a crucial fumble recovery in the second half which led to the go-ahead touchdown.

    “That was a huge play,” Raptors coach Mike Apodaca told the Scoreboard Show. “They had scored to go up, our offense did a good job of answering — we tied it up — and on the ensuing kickoff, we forced a fumble and got a short field and were able to do something with it.

    “That was probably a turning point in the game,” he added.

    The Raptors grabbed an early lead on pick-six by Junior Ramirez. Fort Morgan quickly tied the game, and the two teams went into the half knotted at 7.

    After the break, Fort Morgan went up 14-7, but Silver Creek tied it up at 14 when Dylan Ordway hit Thomas Blazon for a score.

    On the ensuing kickoff, Silver Creek forced that crucial fumble, and the Ordway found Joseph Roth-Bogrett to go up 21-14. Ramirez added a rushing score to give his team the final two-score cushion.

    2A: Faith Christian 19, (4) D’Evelyn 6

    Faith Christian jumped on the Jaguars early, leading 9-0 at the half, and then pushed the lead to 16-0 after three quarters.

    The Eagles held on from there to win.

    “It was one of those wins we had to have in order to stay in a place where we can get into the playoffs,” Faith Christian coach Ralph Nance told the Scoreboard Show.

    It was Faith Christian’s fourth-straight game following an 0-3 start.

    “The young kids are starting to figure it out, and we just hope that as we go down the road, they’ll continue to improve,” Nance said.

    2A: Bishop Machebeuf 53, Sheridan 0

    Bishop Machebeuf played the first home game in the history of its program on Friday. The Buffaloes beat Sheridan.

    Machebeuf is now 6-1, which is its highest win total since the 2010 season when it went 7-4.

    • Briggsdale beat Longmont Christian 83-75 in 6-man. The 158 combined points are the third-most in state history.
    • Akron, No. 4 in 8-man, avenged a earlier loss to No. 3 Daypsring Christian with a 37-27 win. “Our linemen played phenomenal tonight,” coach Jerome Weers told the Scoreboard Show.
    • 6-man No. 2 Kit Carson beat No. 7 Eads 48-8. “It was a big game, and our kids responded really well to the challenge,” coach Jim Trahern told the Scoreboard Show.
    • Another big one in 6-man: No. 1 Fleming outscored No. 6 Peetz 58-41.
    • In 3A: No. 10 Holy Family made a statement with a 43-20 win over No. 9 Erie.
    • 1A No. 4 Meeker took care of No. 6 Cedaredge, 42-14.
    • 8-man’s No. 2 team, Sedgwick County, won on the road at No. 7 Merino.
    • 2A No. 9 Manitou Springs narrowly escaped an upset by Salida with a 35-34 win. The Mustangs faked a punt in their own territory in the fourth quarter to keep a drive alive, went down and scored, then faked the extra point to get the win.
    • Castle View beat Rocky Mountain in overtime, 28-27.
    • Our weekly check of the all-time wins list: West Grand and coach Chris Brown beat Rangely 46-8, giving him his 312th career win. And Kent Denver and coach Scott Yates beat Englewood 41-13, giving him win No. 310.

  • Football roundup: Stratton/Liberty pulls off massive comeback

    Stratton/Liberty pulled off one of the biggest comebacks of the 2016 football season on Friday night.

    The Knighted Eagles trailed Cheyenne Wells 41-8 at one point in the second quarter, but scored the game’s final 41 points to rally and get a huge top-5 win in 6-man, 49-41.

    “A win like this could carry a team a long way,” Stratton/Liberty coach Toby Kechter told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It’s just the belief that they can do anything. They stay together as a team, don’t doubt each other or get mad at each other.”

    The Knighted Eagles scored just before halftime to cut it to 41-16, and then really came out firing in the third quarter.

    “They had the momentum the whole first half, and we got it back and our guys started believing and it just snowballed after that,” Kechter said. “There wasn’t no stopping us.”

    The game, Kechter said, was a “tail of two halves. I mean, we couldn’t do anything right the first half, and they couldn’t do nothing wrong. Then it switched the other way in the second half.”

    Stratton/Liberty tied the game up at 41 with a safety in the fourth quarter. It then held Cheyenne Wells and got the ball back.

    “We were just going to try and kick a field goal to win, but we snuck her in on a fullback dive, and we got the win,” Kechter said. “It was pretty exciting.”

    3A: (4) Pueblo East 24, Durango 20

    Josh Tellez scored the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute of the game to help the Eagles avoid an upset.

    Pueblo East led 10-0 at halftime, and pushed it to 17-0 with 6:56 to play in the third quarter.

    Durango then went on a tear and rallied to take the 20-17 lead by scoring 20 unanswered points. Its last score came with 3:02 to play, but then Pueblo East had a clutch drive to go take the lead and secure the win.

    4A: Monarch 24, (10) Skyline 13

    The Coyotes handed the Falcons their first loss of the season after jumping out to a 17-0 halftime lead.

    Skyline did cut it to 17-7 early in the third quarter, but Monarch responded to go back up by 17 points.

    “We had quite a few offensive snaps,” Monarch coach Phil Bravo told the Scoreboard Show. “When we know we can do that, we’re going to keep someone’s offense frustrated and off the field.”

    Monarch moved to 3-3 with the win, while Skyline is now 5-1.

    “We’ve been talking about it all week long, about … playing a team that just doesn’t know how to lose. They really haven’t,” Bravo said. “At 5-0, I mean, they just don’t understand what that loss column is all about. And a team that doesn’t know how to lose refuses to lose.

    “All in all, we played really well against a good football team,” Bravo said.

    5A: (7) Regis Jesuit 36, Legacy 8

    Regis Jesuit scored the game’s final 29 points en route to a 36-9 win over Legacy.

    The seventh-ranked Raiders, now 5-1, had a monster second half to come back to beat the Lightning, who dropped to 4-2.

    Legacy had leads of 3-0 and 9-7 in the first half, with the second lead holding up at halftime.

    But Regis Jesuit came out firing in the second half, including an early TD which game the Raiders a 15-9 lead, as well as a long interception return that pushed it to 22-9.

    With the win, Regis moved to 1-0 in the new Mt. Antero Conference.

    6-man: Hi-Plains/Flagler 82, (7) Arickaree/Woodlin 16

    The Patriots ran out to a hot start, and never really looked back in an upset performance that made a few dents in the record book.

    Hi-Plains/Flagler led 48-16 after the first quarter. The 48 points were the fourth-most in a single quarter, and the 64 combined points were the second-most in a quarter by two teams.

    At halftime, it was 64-16. The 64 points were tied for the sixth-most in a half by one team.

    In the end, the Patriots cruised to the 82-16 win.

    Notables

    • After an 0-3 start, 2A No. 10 Sterling won its third game in a row, beating Platte Valley 27-18. “They bounced back nice off the bye and we were able to take that week to get back to the basics, get back to some fundamentals, and just back to believing in ball again,” coach Rob Busmente told the Scoreboard Show. “The kids have responded really well.”
    • Holyoke upset 1A No. 6 Limon, 21-14.
    • In 8-man, No. 2 Sedgwick County rolled past No. 8 Haxtun, 56-6.
    • Another top-10 showdown in 8-man turned out to be pretty one-sided as No. 6 Akron beat No. 4 Merino 45-0.
    • In 3A, Evergreen is now 4-2 after beating Skyview 33-7. “I was very happy with the defense. We played physical,” coach Rob Molholm told the Scoreboard Show. “The defense played very consistent tonight, and very aggressive.”
    • Defending 1A champion Buena Vista has responded to a two-game losing streak with two straight wins. The Demons beat Colorado Springs Christian 34-29. “We gave away a few games, and now that should be far away from them,” Buena Vista coach Matt Flavin told the Scoreboard Show. “With this younger team, they just need to go out there and play and enjoy it and have fun. That’s kind of what we pushed this week.”
    • West Grand beat Plateau Valley 30-6, giving Chris Brown his state-leading 311th career win.
    • Kent Denver and coach Scott Yates (308 wins) play Ridge View Academy on Saturday.
    • 5A’s Cherry Creek, now 3-3, answered a few doubters about their No. 10 ranking with a dominant 42-7 win over Fossil Ridge (now 4-2).

  • Volleyball rankings: Pueblo West joins 4A poll

    Pueblo West has jumped into the Class 4A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings at No. 6. The Cyclones have rattled off four-straight wins and haven’t even dropped a set since Sept. 16

    Lewis-Palmer is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 4A and is looking more like the team that won back-to-back state championships in 2014 and 2015.

    Berthoud also broke into the 4A poll this week, coming in at No. 9.

    Rock Canyon is still the No. 1 team in a very competitive 5A class. The Jaguars are undefeated in league play and have not lost since Sept. 3.

    Mountain Vista (No. 4) and Highlands Ranch (No. 8) are both two spots better than they were in last week’s poll.

    At No. 8, Ralston Valley is the only new team in the 5A poll.

    Eaton is still receiving every first-place vote in 3A to hang on to the position it has held all season long.

    Colorado Springs Christian School jumped three spots to come in at No. 2, but University had the biggest jump of the week, improving four spots to land at No. 4.

    Bayfield is the only new team in the 3A poll, coming in at No. 9.

    Paonia still has a firm grasp on the No. 1 spot in 2A with Dayspring Christian still holding strong at No. 2.

    Yuma jumped three spots to land at No. 4.

    There were no new teams in the 2A poll this week.

    While Fleming held its position at No. 1 in 1A, there were plenty of changes to speak of in that poll.

    McClave jumped a staggering five spots to come in at No. 4 this week.

    There were also three new teams in the 1A poll, the most of any class in this set of rankings.

    Holly comes in at No. 8, Heritage Christian lands at No. 9 and Sierra Grande rounds out the poll at No. 10.

  • Football roundup: La Junta beats The Classical Academy on a Hail Mary

    It was a top-2 game, and it was a wild one.

    La Junta, newly-minted as the No. 1 team in Class 2A, beat No. 2 The Classical Academy 26-21 on a Hail Mary to end the game.

    La Junta grabbed a 6-0 lead with 5 minutes left in the first quarter, and things that way until midway through the third quarter.

    TCA went up 7-6 with 6:36 remaining in the third, and expanded the lead to 14-6 early in the fourth quarter after recovering a bad snap on a punt.

    That’s when things got wild.

    La Junta made it 14-12 in with six minutes to play, but had a two-point conversion called back because of a penalty. The Tigers took an 18-14 lead with 1:20 play, and that lead turned out to be brief. That’s because TCA drove down the field to go up 21-18 with 37 seconds to play.

    All of this, of course, just served to set the stage for La Junta’s game-winning Hail Mary.

    This was the Tigers’ second huge win in a week. La Junta beat then-No. 1 Kent Denver last week in another top-2 showdown.

    3A: (10) Longmont 46, (7) Holy Family 35

    Longmont scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to put this back-and-forth game away.

    The team teams were tied at 8 after the opening frame, and Longmont held just a 23-21 lead at halftime. After a Trojans’ field goal, Holy Family went up on a passing score from Stone Samaras to Kyle Helbig.

    The Tigers pushed it to 35-26 on the first play of the fourth quarter, but that’s when Longmont turned it on and scored the game’s final 20 points.

    “We knew that if it came down to the fourth quarter, we were going to do the right things this time that we needed to do to get the win,” Longmont linebacker Austin Hassler told BoCoPreps.com after the win.

    3A: Skyview 11, Lincoln 5 (OT)

    This was a weird one.

    Skyview grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a first-half safety. Lincoln then went up 3-2 on a field goal with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter.

    The Lancers expanded that lead to 5-2 with a safety of their own with 1:57 remaining in the third, only to see Skyview tie it on this field goal with 44 seconds left:

    3A: Skyline 28, Niwot 0

    Skyline is now 5-0, and off to its best start in more than a decade after a 28-0 win over Niwot.

    The Falcons were already receiving votes in this week’s 4A rankings, and could slide into the poll on Monday.

    It’s quite the turnaround for the program: Skyline has won five games in a season just once since 2014.

    “We’ve got great kids, and they’re coachable, and they buy into the mentality and the scheme and the system, and once you get buy-in, good things happen,” Skyline coach Michael Silva told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “That’s what they’ve done and they’ve showed that they have the mentality, regardless of the situation, that they’re going to find a way to win. That’s tough to do, because of our history.

    “These guys have managed to find a way, and trust in me and my staff, and it’s been a fun ride so far. And we don’t want it to stop.”

    Notables

    • Sand Creek broke a 20-game losing streak with a 14-8 win over Air Academy. That had been the longest drought in the state. It was the Scorpions’ first win since Sept. 19, 2014, which also came over Air Academy. That was a wild 68-62 win which set all kinds of records.
    • On the other side of the coin, 2A No. 8 Weld Central has now won 10 consecutive games, the longest such streak in the state. The Rebels, now 5-0 this season, beat Valley 28-21.
    • An update on the all-time wins list: Kent Denver beat Elizabeth 39-20 in an afternoon game. That gave coach Scott Yates his 308th career win. West Grand and coach Chris Brown beat Hayden 53-18. That’s Brown’s 310th career win.
    • Berthoud connected on a Hail Mary at halftime of its game with Thompson Valley. But TV won, 28-13, to notch its first win this season (1-4).
    • There was also a first-half Hail Mary in Rangeview/Gateway. Rangeview’s Jaelin Odegard hit Josh Hollins from near midfield (video here). Rangeview went on to win 52-7.
    • Pueblo East beat Pueblo South in the Cannon Game, 21-14. Check out this cool timelapse from the Pueblo Chieftain’s Nick Jurney.
    • Dayspring Christian had another wild game. This time, 8-man’s No. 2 team beat No. 8 Haxtun 55-53.
    • A big game in 8-man: No. 3 Sedgwick County took care of No. 4 Akron 46-8.
    • In 6-man, No. 3 Stratton/Liberty beat No. 5 Arickaree/Woodlin 54-28.
    • Another top-10 6-man game: No. 8 Cotopaxi upset No. 6 La Veta.
    • Eaglecrest is now 5-0 after a 42-20 win over Bear Creek. The Raptors, No. 4 in 5A, are off to their best start in more than a decade.
    • Fairview, ranked No. 7 in 5A, is also 5-0 after beating Arapahoe 48-7.
    • In 1A, No. 2 Paonia beat No. 7 Cedaredge 35-21.
    • Florence upset 2A No. 10 Salida 22-13. That is actually the lone upset of an unranked team over a ranked team so far in Week 5. Ranked teams are a combined 34-1 against unranked opponents through Friday’s games this week.

  • Volleyball rankings: Mead, Eagle Valley join 4A poll

    For the first time all season, all five top teams held their spots in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings.

    Rock Canyon, Lewis-Palmer, Eaton, Paonia and Felming all come in at No. 1 in their respective classes.

    There was an air of consistency in the Class 5A rankings as the top three teams all went unchanged from last week. Arapahoe jumped two spots to come in at No. 4.

    There were no new teams in 5A this week.

    The Rangers hold firm at No. 1 in 4A with rival Cheyenne Mountain climbing one spot to land at No. 2.

    Niwot and Silver Creek each jumped four spots to come in at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

    Mead (No. 7) and Eagle Valley (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A poll.

    Eaton still sits at No. 1 in the 3A rankings.

    Middle Park made the biggest jump of the week, gaining three spots to land at No. 6.

    Salida is the only new team in the 3A poll as the Spartans come in at No. 9.

    Paonia (No. 1) and Dayspring Christian (No. 2) hold on to their spots from last week with nine of 10 first-place votes going to those two teams.

    Hoehne makes a two-spot jump to come in at No. 3.

    Simla (No. 6) and Denver Christian (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 2A rankings this week.

    Fleming improved to 10-1 with a 3-0 win over Prairie last week and as a result, hang on to the No. 1 spot in 1A.

    Undefeated Flagler made a four-spot jump to come in at No. 3 and took three first-place votes in the process.

    There were no new teams in the 1A rankings this week.

  • Football roundup: Grandview gets big bounce-back win against Cherry Creek

    A week after being upset by Eaglecrest, Grandview had a big bounce-back win against Cherry Creek.

    The ninth-ranked Wolves got rushing touchdowns from Hayden Blubaugh and Gunnar Lamphere, then relied on a stout defense to secure the 17-6 win.

    “It was a great bounce-back week for our kids, and our defense really stepped up tonight,” Grandview coach John Schultz told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show.

    Blubaugh, the Wolves’ star running back, gave his team a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 57-yard run. No. 7 Cherry Creek responded in the second quarter with a rushing score from Trey Windham.

    Grandview added a field goal before the half to lead 10-6 at the break. Lamphere, the quarterback, added his TD in the third quarter.

    “It was a good grind-it-out victory for our offense,” Schultz said.

    The game set an attendance record for Legacy Stadium.

    8-man: (2) Daypsring Christian 51, (6) Hoehne 50 (OT)

    In a wild one, Dayspring Christian outlasted Hoehne in overtime.

    The two teams traded scores most of the night, but Hoehne did start to pull away by halftime, leading 30-16 at the break.

    It remained a two-score game after the third quarter, with Hoehne holding a 38-29 edge, and the Farmers pushed it to 44-29 with 9:17 remaining the fourth.

    But the Eagles refused to go away. They scored 16 unanswered points in five minutes to tie the game at 44, and the teams headed to overtime deadlocked there.

    In OT, Dayspring Christian was able to secure the win.

    3A: Mead 49, (3) Longmont 35

    Mead got perhaps the best win since the program was restarted in 2010, topping city rival Longmont in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

    “We just kept plugging. That’s kind of the mantra we’ve been using,” Mead coach Jason Klatt told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids just didn’t get ratted. We’ve shown a resiliency, and our kids don’t really care if we’re down two touchdowns, or seven points. It doesn’t matter. We just kept on plugging and I’m really proud of our kids tonight.”

    The two teams went crazy scoring in the first half, and Longmont held a 32-28 lead at halftime. The Trojans pushed it to 35-28 after three quarters, but didn’t score again.

    “I’m so proud of our defensive staff and our defensive kids,” Klatt said. “We really just hung in there tonight, and we started gaining confidence as the game wore on that we could stop them.”

    Mead tied it up on Riley Glynn’s third passing touchdown, and four minutes later Evan Hanson returned an interception for a score to give the Mavericks the lead.

    Nathan Mackey had three total touchdowns, including two rushing scores and one receiving.

    It was Mead’s third-straight win after dropping its season-opener.

    8-man: (1) Sargent 22, (5) Norwood 20

    The new No. 1 team Sargent held firm with a big top-5 win.

    “It was a total team effort. They jumped out ahead 6-0, and we just kept battling and battling,” coach Trevan Pepper told the Scoreboard Show.

    The Farmers led 22-8 early in the third quarter, and then 22-14 as the fourth quarter started, but they were able to hold on.

    Sargent made a stop on a two-point attempt in the fourth quarter to win.

    “It was a good victory for us,” Pepper said.

    3A/2A: Durango 14, (6) Bayfield 6 (OT)

    The two area rivals met for the first time in 80 years, and Durango pulled off the overtime win.

    Peyton Woolverton hit Jake Bourdon for a four-yard TD in overtime to give his team the lead, which they followed with a two-point conversion.

    “We had it timed out well in practice and it was just like second nature down there because we’d done it already so many times,”Boudron told the Durango Herald after the game.

    Durango’s Dawson Marcum then ended the game with an interception on Bayfield’s possession in overtime.

    3A: (7) Silver Creek 20, (10) Roosevelt 10

    The Raptors improved to 4-0 with a big top-10 win.

    “It’s a huge win,” Silver Creek coach Mike Apodaca told the Scoreboard Show. “We had the opportunity to play Roosevelt eight-to-ten times over the last few years, and we’ve never been able to beat them at their place. For our program in general, that was a big win and a step in the right direction.”

    Silver Creek led most of the way, though it was only 7-3 at halftime, and Roosevelt did take a brief 10-7 lead in the third quarter.

    “Our defense kept us in it,” Apodaca said.

    Notables

    • High winds affected a number of games across the state, to the point that they caused the postponement of the Rye/John Mall game, according to Rye AD Beth Burns. The winds were so bad that several cars had their windows blown out, one soccer goal slid on the field, and another blew over the fence. The two teams will play Saturday at 1 p.m.
    • 6-man No. 2 Kit Carson beat No. 5 Cheyenne Wells 22-14. The game featured a 20-minute lightning delay, and a big rain storm late in the fourth quarter. “To our kids’ credit, they really hung on and persevered and came up with the win,” coach Jim Trahern told the Scoreboard Show.
    • A top-5 showdown in 1A ended with No. 2 Strasburg beating No. 4 Limon 43-12.
    • 4A No. 6 Pine Creek beat No. 5 Vista Ridge 39-14. Both teams are now 2-2.
    • Another top-10 matchup in 4A saw No. 9 Ponderosa handle No. 10 Rampart, 37-6. “Our team is starting to click a little bit,” Ponderosa coach Jaron Cohen told the Scoreboard Show.
    • Snow made its first appearance at a game this season, when Grand Valley hosted Aspen. Grand Valley won 48-34.
    • In 2A, No. 7 D’Evelyn picked up a good win by topping No. 10 Platte Valley 22-12.
    • 1A No. 5 Bennett edged No. 10 Burlington 15-13.
    • Centauri got a big 26-12 upset win against 1A No. 6 Buena Vista. “They were fired up and ready to go, and they did everything we asked them to do,” coach Kyle Forster told the Scoreboard Show of his defense.
    • Pikes Peak Christian upset No. 10 West Grand 20-8 in 8-man. The keeps all-time wins leader Chris Brown at 309 career wins.
    • Cheraw knocked off No. 7 Sierra Grande in 6-man.
    • Legacy football won its second game in a row after the tragic bus accident that shook the community. This night, the Lightning beat Horizon 38-21.
    • Lutheran beat Falcon in overtime, 21-14.
    • Pueblo West made a late stand to secure a 20-13 win over Dakota Ridge. Dakota Ridge was at the 6-yard-line with 17 seconds remaining.
    • Faith Christian had a 98 1/2 yard touchdown tonight in a 34-7 win over Brush. Freshman Isiah Kroll hit senior Brandon Herman.
    • 4A No. 8 Windsor trailed at the half, but rallied to beat Greeley West 28-7.

  • Football rankings: Fort Morgan takes over at the top of 3A

    There is a new top dog in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

    Following a loss to Discovery Canyon — which lands at No. 2 this week — Pueblo East fell out of the No. 1 spot and Fort Morgan took its place.

    No new teams made their way into the 3A rankings, but there was plenty of movement as Lewis-Palmer (No. 5), Palisade (No. 6) and Silver Creek (No. 7) all climbed two spots.

    The 1A rankings also saw a new team land in the No. 1 spot as Paonia now sits atop the poll. The Eagles topped Ridge View Academy to move to 3-0 and Buena Vista fell out of the top spot with a 16-8 loss to Platte Canyon.

    The Demons come in at No. 6 this week.

    Burlington is the only newcomer to the 1A poll, coming in at No. 10 this week.

    A 57-0 win over Fowler helped Sargent move into the top spot in the 8-man poll with former No. 1 Sedgwick County falling to No. 3.

    That was the only big change in 8-man as there were no newcomer to those rankings.

    In 5A, Pomona remains and No. 1 with Mullen still on its heels at No. 2.

    Columbine jumped one spot to No. 3 after beating Bear Creek, but the big jump went to No. 4 Eaglecrest. The Raptors jumped six spots after beating Grandview on Friday night.

    Only one new team jumped into the 5A rankings this week as Legend breaks in at No. 10.

    Chatfield holds a firm grip on the No. 1 spot in 4A, taking 14 of 17 first-place votes.

    With a win over Greeley Central on Saturday, Loveland jumped three spots to land at No. 3. Vista Ridge also climbed three spots after an impressive 24-22 win over Dakota Ridge.

    With a showdown looming with No. 9 Ponderosa, Rampart is new to the 4A rankings this week. The Rams round out the rankings at No. 10.

    Kent Denver holds on to the No. 1 ranking in 2A this week as La Junta makes the one-spot jump to No. 2. The Sun Devils and Tigers play each other on Friday night.

    The Classical Academy jumps two spots to land at No. 3, just two weeks ahead of their league-opener against La Junta.

    Manitou Springs jumps into the 2A rankings at No. 8. Through three games, the undefeated Mustangs have already matched their win total from a year ago.

    Fleming got eight of 12 first-place votes to hang on to the top spot in the 6-man poll.

    Cheyenne Wells made the big jump of the week, moving up two spots to land at No. 5.

    At No. 10, North Park is the only new team to the 6-man rankings.

  • Volleyball rankings: Rock Canyon back on top of the 5A poll

    The ever-shifting Class 5A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings has another new(ish) No. 1 team.

    Rock Canyon regains the top spot after falling off the perch in the Week 1 rankings. The Jaguars came in as the top team in the preseason rankings.

    Fossil Ridge and Denver East are also making noise this week, landing at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

    The Sabercats were able to knock off defending 4A champion Cheyenne Mountain on Friday, giving them the credential to come in right behind Rock Canyon.

    The Angels got a huge win over Chatfield last Wednesday, which proved to be a huge factor in their jump.

    Coronado is the only new team to break into the 5A rankings, coming in at No. 9.

    Lewis-Palmer is still the No. 1 team in 4A, getting every first-place vote in the process.

    Montrose (No. 4) and Valor Christian (No. 7) each jumped three spots this week and Niwot and Silver Creek each broke into the rankings at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

    Like Lewis-Palmer in 4A, Eaton is still the top team in the 3A rankings by a unanimous vote.

    Three different teams jumped a couple of spots this week as Valley climbs to No. 2, Sterling lands at No. 3 and Pagosa Springs comes in at No. 5.

    At No. 8, Coal Ridge is the only new team in the 3A poll.

    The most turnover of the week came in the 2A poll as a staggering five teams broke into the rankings.

    While Paonia holds on to the No. 1 spot, Hoehne (No 5), Ridgway (No. 6), Sargent (No. 7), Wray (No. 9) and West Grand (No. 10) are all newly ranked teams this week.

    Fleming hangs on to the No. 1 ranking in 1A, as do the other top five teams from last week.

    Kiowa jumped two spots to land at No. 8 while Nucla (No. 6) and McClave (No. 10) are new to the 1A poll.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football rankings: Chatfield takes over top spot in Class 4A

    If no one was paying attention to Chatfield before, they are now.

    Following a 50-39 win over Pine Creek in Week 1 and a 53-7 win over Palmer in Week 2, the Chargers have earned the right to be the No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

    Chatfield is one of two new No. 1 teams this week.

    The 4A rankings received a little bit of a shakeup as a Pine Creek win over Windsor lifted the Eagles to No. 3 this week.

    The Wizards fell to No. 4 as a result of their Saturday loss.

    Ponderosa is the only new team to break into the 4A rankings this week.

    Sedgwick County is the other new No. 1 this week, taking the top spot in the 8-man rankings for the second time this year.

    Sangre de Cristo comes in at No. 8 and is the only new team to the 8-man poll this week.

    Pomona hangs on to the top spot in the 5A rankings thanks a weekend win over Fountain-Fort Carson.

    Fairview made the biggest 5A jump of the week to land at No. 7. That’s three spots better from where the Knights were a week ago.

    There were no new teams in the 5A rankings this week.

    After a thrilling win over Pueblo West, Pueblo East remains the No. 1 team in the 3A rankings by taking 12 of 13 first-place votes.

    The most turnover of the week belongs to the 3A class as it saw three new teams break into the top 10.

    Lewis-Palmer lands at No. 7, Silver Creek comes in at No. 9 and Erie rounds out the 3A top 10 at No. 10.

    Kent Denver remains the No. 1 team in 2A after getting Scott Yates win No. 307 of his career.

    The entire top five from last week’s rankings remained intact as everyone except for No. 2 Resurrection Christian (bye) notched wins.

    Weld Central is the lone team to break into the 2A top 10, coming in at No. 9.

    Buena Vista hangs on to the No. 1 spot in the 1A rankings. No. 2 Paonia and No. 3 Strasburg also held firm in their positions.

    Limon jumped from No. 6 to No. 4 this week.

    Ellicott (No. 9) and Cedaredge (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A rankings.

    A bye week resulted in Fleming hanging on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings.

    Stratton/Liberty (No. 5) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 7) each jumped three spots from their rankings last week.

    There were no new teams in the 6-man poll.
