  • Football rankings: Cherokee Trail, Rocky Mountain join 5A poll

Cherry Creek remains the top overall team in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com rankings after a 7-6 win over Pomona Friday night.

The Bruins received all but one of the first-place votes. It was the Panthers who got that other No. 1 vote.

Following its second-straight loss, Valor Christian fell one slot to land fourth in the polls, with Columbine taking over the third spot.

Both Cherry Creek and Valor Christian will travel out of state for games this week.

Newcomers to the 5A poll include Cherokee Trail, fresh off an impressive win over Denver East, and Rocky Mountain.

Like in 5A, the rest of last week’s top teams remained at No. 1 in the polls, with some newcomers being filtered in.

Pine Creek remains the top team in 4A after its bye week. Greeley West made the biggest jump in the 4A pool, going from ninth to sixth, thanks to a 28-20 win over D’Evelyn.

After starting the year 2-0, Palmer Ridge broke into the 4A poll at ninth, followed by fellow-Colorado Springs newcomer, Rampart, at No. 10. The Rams blanked Coronado on Saturday and have yet to surrender a point this season.

Defending champion Pueblo East is still on top in the 3A poll. The top seven teams in 3A held their positions and only one team, Mead, broke in as a newcomer. They join this week’s poll at 10.

Kent Denver remains atop the 2A polls, but the biggest shake-up of the week happened right behind them. Faith Christian fell from second to seventh after a stunning loss to Florence. The Huskies joined the poll this week at eighth on the strength of their 15-12 win over the Eagles.

Trinidad also joins the 2A polls at No. 10 this week. The Miners look good early this season, outscoring their opponents 93-14 through two games.

Crowley County joined the 1A polls at No. 10 this week.

Springfield and Holly each made their way into the 8-man polls. They come in and ninth and 10th, respectively. Merino also jumped from No. 10 to No. 6 this week.

In 8-man, Cheyenne Wells breaks into the top 10, coming in at ninth. Pawnee also jumped from fifth to third this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Cherry Creek, fresh off of two impressive wins to begin the season, has ascended to the top of CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A football rankings this week.

The Bruins, defending 5A champions, beat Heritage in Zero Week, then followed it up with a 17-3 win over then-No. 4 Regis Jesuit in Week 1. They received 11 of the 18 first-place votes, and edged out Pomona, which moved up to No. 2 after getting six first-place votes.

Cherry Creek and Pomona play on Friday.

Pomona, No. 3 in the preseason, beat No. 1 Valor Christian last week. Valor Christian fell to No. 3 in the 5A poll.

Columbine is fourth, and Grandview moved into the top five following its win over Chaparral. Ralston Valley also moved up — to sixth — after its Week 1 win over Eaglecrest.

Regis Jesuit fell three spots to seventh, Fairview is eighth and Doherty moved up to ninth. Mullen is the lone newcomer to 5A this week at No. 10. The Mustangs opened the season with a 41-0 win against Gateway.

There are also new No. 1 teams in the 2A and 8-man rankings.

    Kent Denver Gunnison football

Kent Denver takes over in 2A following its win over then-No. 7 Gunnison, coupled with Brush’s loss to rival Fort Morgan. The 2A ranking added No. 7 La Junta this week.

In 8-man, Dayspring Christian takes over at the top. The Eagles narrowly edged out Norwood with 75 total points to Norwood’s 74 — despite Norwood actually getting more first-place votes (four) than Dayspring (three).

The 8-man poll added Haxtun (No. 9) and Merino (No. 10) this week.

Each of the other No. 1 teams held firm this week: Pine Creek (4A), Pueblo East (3A), Paonia (1A) and Fleming (6-man).

The biggest movers in 4A’s ranking were Windsor, which moved up to fourth and Vista Ridge, now ranked No. 6. That poll added three new teams: No. 8 Ponderosa, No. 9 Greeley West and No. 10 Wheat Ridge.

In 3A, Rifle jumped up from No. 8 to No. 4. That poll, too, has three new members: No. 7 Berthoud, No. 8 D’Evelyn and No. 9 Lewis-Palmer.

There were no new teams in 1A, though Burlington did jump from No. 10 to No. 6.

The 6-man poll added Cheraw at No. 8.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Legend takes over as No. 1 in 5A volleyball rankings

Legend volleyball, No. 8 in the Class 5A preseason poll, has risen to the No. 1 spot after the first full week of action.

The Titans, now 5-0, beat former No. 1 Cherokee Trail, then-No. 4 Regis Jesuit and Air Academy, at the time ranked No. 9 in 4A, in the past week.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier. Legend has a date with 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer on Thursday.

There was much more shakeup to the 5A poll, which is conducted by CHSAANow.com. Cherokee Trail remained very high, at No. 2, but there was a lot of change behind the Cougars.

Chatfield moved up two spots to No. 3, Rock Canyon rocketed from unranked to No. 4, and Regis Jesuit moved into the top five.

Cherry Creek is No. 6, Grandview is No. 7, and then three newcomers round out the ranking: No. 8 Castle View, No. 9 Mountain Vista and No. 10 Brighton.

In the 4A ranking, Lewis-Palmer retained its grip on the top spot. That poll added No. 7 Longmont and No. 9 Windsor. Montrose also made a big jump in going from No. 7 to No. 4.

The other No. 1 teams also stayed put: Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Idalia (1A).

Other new teams this week include Faith Christian (No. 10 in 3A), Rye (No. 8 in 2A) and the following in 1A: Sangre de Cristo (No. 8), La Veta (No. 9) and Norwood (No. 10).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Softball rankings see a host of changes, including new 5A No. 1 Legend

    Grandview Legend softball
Legend softball is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Legend, off to a 7-0-0 start this season, is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A softball.

Already, the Titans own wins over former No. 1 Grandview, then-No. 10 Dakota Ridge and then-No. 6 Douglas County. So it wasn’t shocking to see Legend get nine of the 10 first-place votes to lead CHSAANow.com’s poll this week.

It was only the start of the changes to this week’s rankings, as five new teams joined the 5A poll. Included was a big riser in Mountain Range, which went from unranked to No. 2.

Also new to 5A’s poll this week are No. 4 Ralston Valley — the Mustangs got the other first-place vote — No. 5 ThunderRidge, No. 7 Liberty and No. 8 Rocky Mountain.

Douglas County also made a big jump in going from No. 6 to No. 3. Fossil Ridge (No. 6), Brighton (No. 9) and Grandview (No. 10) are the other teams who remained from the preseason rankings.

4A’s poll got six new members, though Valor Christian remained atop the ranking. No. 4 Vista Ridge, No. 5 Silver Creek, No. 6 Kennedy, No. 7 Berthoud, No. 9 Mountain View and No. 10 Green Mountain all joined this week.

3A also had some changeover, though not as much. Strasburg did retain its top spot, but was joined by three new teams in the ranking: No. 7 Faith Christian, No. 9 Akron and No. 10 Lamar.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Complete rankings for each class are below.

  • Defending champs top 5 of 7 preseason football rankings

Defending champions rule the preseason football rankings, save for two classifications.

Pine Creek (Class 4A), Pueblo East (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A) and Caliche (8-man) all won championships last season — and each one sat atop their respective classfication when the preseason CHSAANow.com Football Polls were released on Monday.

Only Valor Christian (5A) and Fleming (6-man) are preseason No. 1 teams without being a defending champion. Valor was the runner-up in 5A last season, while Fleming was a semifinalists in 6-man.

The 5A voters were pretty determined that the top three teams this season would be Valor, Cherry Creek and Pomona. Each team received at least one first-place vote, and the trio separated themselves from the rest of the field by more than 50 points each.

Valor got nine of the 15 first-place votes and totaled 140 points. Cherry Creek, last season’s 5A champion, is No. 2 with four first-place votes and 134 total points. Pomona got one first-place vote and is No. 3 at 123 total points.

At No. 4 is Regis Jesuit and new coach Dan Filleman. Perennial contender Columbine rounds out the top five.

Fairview, led by senior star Carlo Kemp, checks in at No. 6; returning semifinalist Grandview is No. 7; and Fountain-Fort Carson is No. 8.

Ralston Valley, another semifinalist, opens at No. 9, and Doherty rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The 4A ranking featured the lone unanimous top-ranked team in Pine Creek. The two-time defending champion Eagles, who feature Nebraska commit JoJo Domann, got all 12 first-place votes and totaled 120 points.

Longmont, the 4A runner-up, is No. 2; Dakota Ridge is third; and Falcon (No. 4) and Denver South (No. 5) round out the top five.

Pueblo East is No. 1 in 3A’s preseason poll. (Mark Adams)

In 3A, defending champion Pueblo East returns a stacked roster, but will have a new coach in interim head Lee Meisner. Even still, the Eagles got 13 of the 14 first-place votes in 3A, and lead the ranking.

Fort Morgan got the other first-place vote and is No. 2 to begin the year. Evergreen is third, Holy Family is fourth and Palisade is No. 5.

Brush, another team looking to defend its title, led the 2A poll with seven of the 10 first-place votes. The Beetdiggers, too, have a new coach: Reid Kahl. Kent Denver, last year’s runner-up, opens at No. 2.

In the 1A ranking, Paonia, the defending champion, received eight of the 12 first-place votes. Buena Vista is No. 2.

The 8-man poll was interesting. Defending champion Caliche leads the way at No. 1 in the preseason, but four different teams received first-place votes — including Dayspring Christian at No. 3, which got three top votes. Caliche and No. 2 Norwood each got two first-place votes, and Granada got one.

Fleming got four first-place votes to lead the 6-man ranking, while No. 2 Eads and No. 3 Arickaree/Woodlin each received one. Arickaree/Woodlin won last season’s title.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Three teams favored to three-peat in preseason volleyball rankings

Resurrection Christian volleyball is the No. 1 team in the preseason 2A volleyball poll. (Tim Visser/TimVisserPhotography.com)

Last fall, for the first time in state history, every single volleyball champion successfully defended its title. Three of them are favored to win a third consecutive championship heading into the 2015 season.

Defending champions Lewis-Palmer (Class 4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) are among top-ranked teams in the CHSAANow.com Volleyball Polls, which were released Monday. Also heading their respective classifications are Cherokee Trail (5A) and Idalia (1A).

The last team to win more than two straight titles was Cheyenne Mountain, which won five from 2008-12.

Lewis-Palmer is actually coming off a mythical national championship in addition to its two 4A titles. The Rangers got eight of the 11 first-place votes in 4A’s preseason poll. Ponderosa, the team they beat for the 2014 title, is No. 2.

Eaton, the defending 3A champion, holds the top spot in that poll after getting eight of the 10 first-place votes in that class. Colorado Springs Christian opens at No. 2.

In 2A, Resurrection Christian — yes, another defending champion — got six of the seven first-place votes to top the preseason poll. The Cougars have actually won 58-straight matches, which ranks fifth-best all-time. Yuma is No. 2.

Cherokee Trail opens as the favorite in 5A. The Cougars got six of the 11 first-place votes. Grandview, last season’s champion, is No. 2 and got one first-place vote.

Cherry Creek is No. 3, and Regis Jesuit is No. 4. Chatfield, the 2014 runner-up, is No. 5. The Charges received two first-place votes.

Two teams — Fossil Ridge and Brighton — received first-place votes, but did not make the 5A ranking.

The 1A poll is led by Idalia, which got all six first-place votes. Flagler is No. 2.

Fleming won last season’s 1A title, and has won 47 consecutive matches. The Wildcats open at No. 9.

  • Akron’s Jordan Baer wins girls Steinmark Award

    Akron's Jordan Baer. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
    Akron’s Jordan Baer. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

    Shaking with excitement.

That was the first thing Akron’s Jordan Baer felt when she received her call from the Colorado High School Coaches Association’s Tom Southall that she was the recipient of the 2015 CHSCA Steinmark High School Athlete of the Year Award for girls.

“I am shaking with excitement right now,” Baer said. “I’m so honored. I know a couple of the other girls that were nominated. This is such a great accomplishment and I can’t seem to describe this thrill right now. Thank you so much.”

Baer will be presented with the Steinmark Award at the Colorado High School Coaches All-State Games, June 12, in Alamosa where she will be playing in the CHSCA All-State basketball games. This is the 42nd year for the girls, but the 43rd trophy as there was one year, 1984, in which two girls were recognized. The first winner for the girls was Anne Vento of Pueblo Centennial in 1974.

Vento was the first girl’s player to fashion an undefeated season playing tennis. She also was a standout in swimming and track. Dave Logan of Wheat Ridge, now the voice of the Denver Broncos, head football coach at Cherry Creek and KOA radio talk show host, was the winner of the first Steinmark in 1972.

“The Fred Steinmark Award stands for faith, courage, heart and determination through academics, athleticism, and citizenship,” said Baer. “He set incredibly high goals for himself and worked diligently to achieve them. He battled life’s obstacles in a public manner and got the country educated about the disease and the possibilities of a cure. He kept looking to the future, despite the fact that it looked bleak medically.”

Academically, Baer graduated as the valedictorian at Akron this school year with a 4.1188 grade point average. And, of course, she was just as outstanding on the athletic courts in basketball and volleyball.

Baer started in 106 basketball games and averaged an outstanding 15.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists through her career. She has been a first-team All-State selection in basketball every year since she was a sophomore and was second-team All-State as a freshman. She was also named as CHSAANow.com’s Class 2A Player of the Year.

She also came through to earn all-state first team honors in volleyball as a junior and senior. She spent the course of her career slamming the volleyball as she racked up 1,018 kills.

And like all other Steinmark winners over the years, she was very involved in her school and community activities. She will be headed to Colorado Christian University in the fall.

Indeed, Baer fits well into the Steinmark role of athletics and academics of those who have been honored before.

Freddie Steinmark was a brilliant scholar, athlete and citizen that graduated from Wheat Ridge and earned All-State and All-American honors while competing for the Farmers in football, basketball and baseball. At the University of Texas, he helped the Longhorns win the national title in football in 1969. His life was cut short as Steinmark died of cancer in 1971.

There are four requirements for a senior student athlete to receive a nomination for the CHSCA Steinmark Award that can be made by any coach or school. The rules for nomination require that two sports be played during an athlete’s high school career in which they must be All-State in one sport and at least All-Conference in another. They also need to have carried at least a 3.0 grade point average and be active in their school and community.

Even though the Steinmark carries “Athlete of the Year” designation, it actually recognizes a high school career. It is an all-classification award and through the decades all classifications, boys and girls, have had winners. It has become recognized as the most prestigious athletic award a graduating high school senior athlete can receive in Colorado and is now sponsored by the Colorado High School Coaches Association.

It is a difficult task to select the finalists for the award out of the many youngsters who have been nominated by coaches throughout the state each year. The winners are selected by a panel of high school coaches and administrators, but no coaches or administrators from the schools of the nominees are allowed to participate in the selection process.

Winning the Steinmark is certainly another reason in which her father, Alan Baer, can be proud of his daughter. After all, he also coached her in basketball.

“Jordan is my daughter but I have also had the privilege of being one of her basketball coaches since she started competing in the second grade,” he said. “She doesn’t desire individual attention, as the team goal is of the utmost importance to her. In fact, she struggled greatly fulfilling this application for this award and she is very uncomfortable being in the spotlight.”

Throughout all four years of high school, Baer started in every varsity basketball and volleyball game. She was a top outside hitter in volleyball and could certainly hit her baskets from the outside in basketball.

“Jordan is extremely dedicated at getting everyone involved in the game and her passion is contagious,” Alan continued. “She loves to win, is determined to win, but accepts a loss as a challenge to get better. Her relentless work ethic goes hand-in-hand with her success. Throughout, she has been an exceptional role model, not only for her teammates, but for the youth in our community.

“She realizes that although her sports career has been full of shining moments, she grasps that these are not defining moments, but truly stepping stones to her future,” concluded her father.

Akron teacher Britney Weers also speaks highly of Baer and her accomplishments.

“Jordan’s character and integrity far exceeds any other student I have taught,” Weers said. “She will go above and beyond what is asked of her without batting an eye. This is shown through her success in both sports and academics. When students see her attention to detail, they begin to follow in the same direction.

“Even beyond the classroom, Jordan can be seen as a leader,” said Weers. “She is one I know I can count on to get a job done, and done well. In my ten years of teaching, I have never met a student who is as much of perfectionist as me. She will not let any task go partly done.”

Once again, the competition for the Steinmark Award made it extremely difficult for the committee of coaches and athletic directors to arrive at their final decision. Cori Aafedt of Valley, Courtney Clark of Lamar, Riley Cooney of Mountain View, and Jordyn Colter from Cherry Creek where very much in the hunt for the award as this year’s finalists.

Other student athletes receiving nominations this year were: Alexandria Dufour of Frederick, Savannah Heebner of Castle View, Anna Schweke of Clear Creek, Payton Shahan of Pagosa Springs, and Jordan Williams of Norwood.
