ANTON — Kyle Leoffler jumped the route and delivered a title.

The Arickaree/Woodlin senior had a game-changing interception return for a touchdown just as the third quarter ended, and the Indians used to momentum to seal a title with a 44-26 victory over Eads in the 6-man football championship game on Saturday.

“Honestly, I think that decided the game,” said Arickaree/Woodlin senior Garrett Shaffer. “If we wouldn’t have gotten that, they could have come back. They did it against Peetz (in the semifinals). They could have done it against us. They’re a good football team.”

Added Leoffler, who threw two touchdowns and rushed for another for a four-score day: “That kind of took some of it out of them.”

But things didn’t start well for Arickaree/Woodlin, the top seed in the 6-man playoffs. Even with a 1 p.m. kickoff, conditions were frigid. The temperature hovered around 15 degrees with a wind chill dropping it to minus-2 at times.

The weather affected both offenses early, though No. 2-seeded Eads was able to grab a 6-0 lead on its first drive on Dylan Dixon’s touchdown.

The Eagles were threatening to add to that lead later in the quarter when Arickaree/Woodlin made a huge stop on 4th-and-1 at the 9-yard-line.

“That’s huge,” said Arickaree/woodlin coach David Saffer. “They can put up a lot of points. To get a stop, get a swing in momentum and get things going your way, it makes a difference.”

Two drives later — on third and goal from the 25 — Leoffler took a pitch from his brother, Trent, eluded a tackle in the backfield, then lofted a swing pass back to Trent. Trent shot down the left sideline for a score; Kyle added a two-point kick for an 8-6 lead.

That score held up at halftime, which left many scratching their heads.

Arickaree/Woodlin entered the game on pace to break the state record for points scored in a season. Ultimately, after Saturday’s win, the Indians finished with 747 this season, one off Hugo’s record of 748 set in 1930.

Suffice to say, the first half was out of character for Arickaree/Woodlin.

“We started slow,” Kyle Leoffler said. “It was cold.”

Said Shaffer, “We came out flat. We weren’t paying attention like we should.”

At halftime, the adjustments were nothing schematic, Saffer said.

“We just weren’t firing off the ball,” the coach said. “We were just a little sluggish, I think, and they were taking it to us. We just weren’t aggressive enough.”

A delicate snow began to fall as the second half opened, but it only added to the atmosphere.

Arickaree/Woodlin scored on its first two drives of the second half, then came Leoffler’s pick-six. It was 28-12 at that point, but Arickaree/Woodlin answered every score Eads had from there on out.

Eads’ Dixon had a great day, scoring four touchdowns, and was seemingly in on every tackle.

With the four touchdowns Saturday, Kyle Leoffler finished his season with 48 scores. That mark is the seventh-most in state history.

The championship is the first for Arickaree since the school won three consecutive 6-man titles from 1986-88. It’s Woodlin’s first football championship since winning 8-man in 1974.

“It’s great for both of these schools,” Saffer said. “It’s been a while that both of these communities and schools can get excited, so I’m happy for these kids, happy for both of these schools.”

  • Football roundup: Ralston Valley pulls off miraculous win on 56-yard field goal

Ralston Valley looked to be the first major upset victim of the Class 5A football playoffs.

Then senior Collin Root drilled a 56-yard field goal on the final play of the Mustangs’ second-round game against Eaglecrest. It made for an unbelievable, miraculous 44-43 win.

“56-yarder, with that kind of pressure, by Collin Root, it’s just an unbelievable kick,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show on Friday night.

The two teams slugged it out the entire night, with Eaglecrest methodically marching down and kicking what looked to be a game-winning field goal with 38 seconds left following a fumble recovery.

But Ralston Valley got one last crack. With Eaglecrest in a prevent defense, and despite having just one timeout, the Mustangs dialed up three straight run plays — two by Kyle Rush, another by Andrew Wingard — to drive down to Eaglecrest’s 39-yard-line with 3.3 seconds remaining.

With the famous Legacy Stadium wind at his back, Root stepped up and drilled the kick. Eaglecrest coach Mike Schmitt later told the Aurora Sentinel that he thought the odds of it going through the uprights was “1 percent.”

“He’s such a heck of a kicker, and he’s hit 55 in practice multiple times,” Loyd said. “The key word being ‘practice.’ Different story with the game on the line in order to keep moving on.”

Root entered the game having hit 2-of-4 field goals this season, with a long of 43.

“It was unbelievable,” Loyd said. “It was pretty exciting for our guys. We’ve actually been out there three times before, and lost heartbreakers, so we were able to win that one.”

The Mustangs, a No. 1 seed, move on to host No. 2 Fairview in the quarterfinals.

    4A: (13) Falcon 28, (4) Denver South 13

Matt Bastian, Josiah Hall, Jeff Vela and Wyatt Aaberg each had rushing touchdowns for the Falcons, who pulled the biggest upset of 4A’s first round.

“We knew we had to go on the road and battle against a really tough team, and our kids really came together and found a way to get it done tonight,” Brian Green, Falcon’s co-head coach, told the Scoreboard Show.

It was Vela’s score in the third quarter which made it 21-7 as Falcon announced the upset potential to the state. The Rebels did cut it to 21-13 later in the third quarter, but Aaberg’s touchdown put the game away.

Falcon did a great job of containing South’s ground game, as well, and actually didn’t allow a rushing touchdown.

Denver South entered the game averaging 323.7 rushing yards per game. Falcon held the Rebels to 35 yards on 29 carries.

“It’s just an incredible job by our kids,” Green said. “It was a great gameplan, and just attacking. We weren’t sitting back waiting for them — but just attacking and running downhill on defense.”

Falcon jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the game. It advances to play Pueblo South in the quarterfinals, a team that beat the Falcons 24-21 on Sept. 19. Falcon will host.

    4A: (5) Pueblo South 20, (12) Greeley West 7

Ray Mitchell had two rushing touchdowns to spot Pueblo South a 14-0 lead in the first half and the Colts never looked back en route to the win. The defense had an outstanding night, as well.

“I can’t give enough praise to our defense and what they did, and getting off the field in key situations, and making plays,” Pueblo South coach Ryan Goddard told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids just stepped up.”

Nate Spinuzzi also kicked a pair of 23-yard field goals in the win. The final came on a long, time-consuming drive which put the game out of reach.

“It’s a tribute to our offensive line, and credit to those guys up front, and our backs,” Goddard said. They did a fantastic job of just grinding it out and getting first downs.”

    5A: (2) Fairview 45, (3) Overland 27

Quarterback Johnny Feauto threw four first-half touchdown passes, three to Tim Ryan, as Fairview opened a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

“To be able to get that halftime lead was a great start,” Fairview coach Tom McCartney told the Scoreboard Show.

Feauto finished with five touchdown passes, and Ryan also added a 65-yard rushing touchdown.

    • Arickaree/Woodlin carved out a spot in 6-man’s championship game with a 72-22 win over Fleming in the semifinals.
    • No. 2 Fort Collins beat No. 15 Rampart 49-6 in 4A. The Lambkins get a rematch with Longmont next. “We had to battle the elements,” coach Eric Rice told the Scoreboard Show. “The skies opened up and it pretty much poured the whole second half, and we didn’t see that in the forecast. I’m proud of our kids for being able to adjust.”
    • Two No. 1 seeds in 5A just rolled in running clock wins: Cherry Creek beat No. 4 Bear Creek 56-21, and Grandview beat No. 5 Lakewood 40-0.
    • Another big win for a top seed in 5A: No. 2 Valor Christian beat No. 3 Mountain Vista 44-0. Quarterback Dylan McCaffrey threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns.
    • One more: No. 2 Regis Jesuit 44, Heritage 0. Alec Barnes rushed for three touchdowns.
    • In 4A, No. 7 Longmont beat No. 10 Pueblo Centennial 26-7. Longmont has won seven straight games after a 1-3 start. “It’s super-exciting to be able to do that,” coach Doug Johnson told the Scoreboard Show. “It’s just a tough-minded group of kids.”
    • Discovery Canyon, 3A’s top seed, easily handled No. 16 Berthoud, 41-0. It’s actually the first playoff win in school history. “We talked a little bit about it, and just about the disappointing exit of the previous two seasons,” coach Shawn Mitchell told the Scoreboard Show. “I feel like this group just has a different mentality. I don’t think they had too much anxiety about that. I think that they were just focused on being 1-0 at the end of this week. But for the program itself, it was a big hurdle to get over.”

  • Playoff football roundup: Gunnison slips Sterling’s upset bid in 2A

It came down to a fourth-down conversion in overtime, then an extra point, but Gunnison survived.

No. 12-seeded Sterling pushed the No. 5 Cowboys to overtime on Saturday afternoon in the Class 2A football playoffs.

Tied at 22 at the end of regulation, Sterling scored on its possession in overtime, but went for two points and didn’t convert.

When it got the ball, Gunnison quickly faced a third-and-10. Gunnison quarterback Jake Wallin scrambled to the 1-yard-line to set up a 4th-and-1. The next play, running back Brady Wilson scored. The Cowboys then kicked the extra point to take a 29-28 win.

“It’s playoffs. A win is a win,” Wallin told the Gunnison Country Times afterward. “It doesn’t matter what the score is. If you win, you go on, if you lose, you’re taking your pads off for good. We’re excited to play another week.”

Gunnison advances to play Eaton, the No. 13 seed which upset No. 4 Lamar 41-20 on Saturday.

Eaton led 26-7 at halftime in that game. Lamar cut it to 26-14 with a score early in the third quarter, but Eaton pulled away with a 15-point fourth quarter.

AURORA — Grandview, Ralston Valley, Pomona and Cherry Creek all got No. 1 seeds when the Class 5A football bracket was released on Sunday.

All four teams are the top seeds in their respective quadrants — which is a new format for this season. The classification kept a 32-team bracket, but instead of seeding teams Nos. 1-32, the seeding committee seeded four quadrants with Nos. 1-8 apiece.

The seeding committee is also a new addition this season. Previously, the 32-team bracket was set strictly by Wild Card points standings, with a few changes up or down one seed to avoid league matchups. This year, the 32 qualifiers were again set by the Wild Card points — which were released on Sunday morning — but the committee true-seeded the field based on a number of different criteria, including head-to-head, and an RPI ranking system.

No. 2 seeds include Rocky Mountain, Fairview, Valor Christian and Regis Jesuit. No. 3s are Fountain-Fort Carson, Overland, Mountain Vista and Doherty.

Among first-round matchups are No. 4 Prairie View vs. No. 5 Lakewood, No. 3 Mountain Vista vs. No. 6 Cherokee Trail, No. 4 Legacy vs. No. 5 Eaglecrest, and No. 3 Doherty vs. No. 6 Heritage.

Valor Christian is the defending champion, having won five consecutive titles over three classifications.

Teams can begin play this weekend. The semifinals are the weekend of Nov. 22 at home sites, with the championship No. 29 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The full 5A bracket can be found here.

The 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man brackets also came out on Sunday.

2A’s top seed is Brush, which will faces Moffat County in the first round. No. 2 is Kent Denver, No. 3 is Strasburg and No. 4 is Lamar. Also hosting first-round games are No. 5 Gunnison, No. 6 Platte Valley, No. 7 Montezuma-Cortez and No. 8 Faith Christian.

Platte Valley is the defending champion.

See the full 16-team 2A bracket here.

In 1A, Paonia earned the top seed. The defending champion will host No. 16 Wiggins in the first round of the 16-team playoff.

Other hosts in 1A include No. 2 Buena Vista, No. 3 Meeker, No. 4 Resurrection Christian, No. 5 Centauri, No. 6 Rye, No. 7 Crowley County and No. 8 Wray.

See the entire 1A bracket here.

Dayspring Christian, also a defending champion, nabbed the top seed in 8-man. It will host No. 16 Elbert to kick off its title defense.

No. 2 Norwood, No. 3 Caliche, No. 4 Granada, No. 5 Akron, No. 6 Sangre de Cristo, No. 7 Simla and No. 8 Vail Christian will also host games in the first round of the 16-team field.

In 6-man, Arickaree/Woodlin is the top seed of the eight-team field. It plays No. 8 North Park in the first round.

Other teams hosting games in the first round include No. 2 Eads, No. 3 Peetz and No. 4 Fleming.

Defending champion Stratton/Liberty did not make the eight-team field.

The 2A, 1A and 8-man championship games are No. 22. 6-man’s title game is Nov. 15.

  • Football roundup: No. 3 Fort Collins rallies to beat No. 8 Broomfield

Fort Collins trailed Broomfield 21-10 at halftime, but rallied for a 30-21 win on Friday night.

“At halftime … it wasn’t really a matter of X’s and O’s and we kind of knew that from a coaching standpoint,” Fort Collins coach Eric Rice told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show. “It was just more a matter of not finishing plays that we had the opportunity to.

“And so our very spirited message at halftime to the guys was, ‘Sometimes winning a football game is about playing with heart and just playing with a lot of courage.’ I really think that’s all it really took for us to get better in the second half.”

The third-ranked Lambkins actually led 10-7 with five minutes to play in the second quarter, but Broomfield struck for two quick touchdowns in a span of two-and-a-half minutes to take a 21-10 advantage into halftime.

Fort Collins responded with a touchdown on its opening drive of the second half — a 5-yard run from Kyler Sigsbee capped it.

William Bridges then gave the Lambkins a 24-21 lead later in the third quarter, and Sigsbee added another touchdown, his third of the game, with 7:16 remaining in the game to seal things.

“Really, really proud of our kids for showing their true character that they’re bunch of fighters and they got a lot of heart and they got a lot of courage and found a way to get a win tonight,” Rice said. “I actually look at tonight, and being down at halftime, as a very positive thing for us in the long run, because we might find ourselves in the playoffs here in a couple of weeks down at halftime, and we’re going to be able to draw back on this experience and say, ‘We’ve been there before.’”

The win sealed the Class 4A Northern League title for the Lambkins.

    5A: Overland 50, Cherokee Trail 48 (OT)

A back-and-forth game all night long, it was fitting that this one ended up in overtime.

The game featured seven ties or lead changes, but it was Ahjon White’s score on fourth-and-goal from the 2 and Austin Conway’s subsequent two-point conversion that proved to be the difference.

Overland had leads of 14-0, 22-14, 28-20 and 36-28. Each time, Cherokee Trail battled back. The Cougars actually took at 42-36 lead in the fourth quarter, but it was Overland’s turn to respond. Josh Wright’s 20-yard touchdown with 5:26 to play tied the game.

Overland had a chance to win it with 2.8 seconds to play, but missed a field goal and the teams went to overtime.

In OT, the Trailblazers got the ball first and White scored his fourth total touchdown of the night on the fourth-down try. Conway then got the conversion on a run. It was Overland’s fifth two-point attempt of the night; they ended up converting three of them.

Cherokee Trail also scored on a fourth-and-goal from the two, but couldn’t convert for two.

Conway finished 22-of-26 with 256 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 108 yards

Cherokee Trail’s Izaiah Lottie had a big night with three touchdowns.

    1A: (8) Centauri 42, (6) Monte Vista 6

The Falcons cruised to an easy win over the Pirates.

“We played well and we played together and we were able to get a big victory against a league rival and a good team,” coach Kyle Forster told the Scoreboard Show after the game. “Our first four games were against four quality teams. Three of them are in the top-4. We learned a lot early, and we were able to put it together tonight.”

Centauri closed the regular season with five-straight wins.

    • The latest Wild Card point standings won’t publish until either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
    • Speaking of Wild Card points: Manual was the beneficiary of a forfeit from Ridge View Academy earlier this week. It moved them all the way up to No. 9 in the 2A Wild Card points. • Northridge upset 3A No. 9 Berthoud, 32-20.
    • Also in 3A, No. 6 Rifle held off Glenwood Springs 20-13. “As usual, we traveled well,” Rifle coach Damon Wells told the Scoreboard Show. “It was a full house. It was pretty loud. I think sometimes in the mountains in Colorado on Friday nights in the fall, it’s a pretty special environment.”

    • St. Mary’s, No. 9 in 2A, won a rivalry game with Manitou Springs, 28-18. St. Mary’s went 1-8 last season; they’re now 7-2 in 2014. “These kids are riding high right now, playing well,” coach Nic Olney told the Scoreboard Show.
    • Here’s another good turnaround: Littleton is 5-4 after beating Ponderosa 21-19. The Lions started 1-4. They won the 4A Plains League as a result. “This is our second fall being together,” coach Kurt Krantz told the Scoreboard Show. “The kids are believing in what we’re doing. They’re starting to understand what this is about.”
    • Rangeview won the 5A South Metro League with a 29-7 win over Heritage. “I really like where our team’s at,” coach Dave Gonzales told the Scoreboard Show. “We kind of found our identity tonight. Peetz’s win assures the classification of a new champion this year. Stratton/Liberty won the 2013 crown.

  • Grandview nabs No. 1 ranking after 5A football poll shaken up

Grandview, now 8-0, is the new No. 1 team in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A football rankings this week.

The Wolves took over the top spot previously occupied by Valor Christian, which lost an in-state game for the first time in 28 outings on Friday when then-No. 9 Cherry Creek upset the Eagles 33-17.

Grandview is unbeaten to this point in the rugged Centennial League, and beat Cherry Creek in Week 7. It topped a very solid Overland team 53-13 last Thursday.

    But it wasn’t a clear-cut, unanimous vote.

Ralston Valley also had a good claim to the top ranking. The Mustangs are 8-0, too, and won a monster game over then-No. 3 Pomona on Friday. They settled into the No. 2 spot this week, just 10 overall points behind Grandview.

Grandview received 10 first-place votes; Ralston Valley got five.

Meanwhile, Fairview moved up two places to No. 3 after escaping an upset bid from Fossil Ridge.

Pomona dropped one spot to fourth, Cherry Creek rocketed up from No. 9 to No. 5, and Valor fell all the way to sixth. Regis Jesuit is seventh, dropping one place despite a good win over then-No. 7 Mountain Vista.

Rocky Mountain remained at No. 8, Mountain Vista fell to No. 9 and Doherty rejoined the 5A poll at No. 10.

Speaking to the uncertainty in the 5A ranking at the moment, spots Nos. 4-7 are separated by a mere five points. Things could get much more clouded — Valor Christian and Grandview play in their regular season finale on Friday.

In the other six classificatoins, none of the top-ranked teams were displaced. It means Pine Creek (4A), Discovery Canyon (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Arickaree/Woodlin (6-man) stayed on top.

There were no newcomers in the 4A ranking this week, though 3A added Palisade (No. 10), and St. Mary’s (No. 9). Eaton (No. 10) joined the 2A poll. 1A added Crowley County (No. 10), and North Park joined 6-man’s ranking at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.
