  • All-state skiing teams for the 2018-19 season

The 2018-19 all-state skiing teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. Skiers of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced during the meet. Coaches of the year are voted upon by their peers prior at the state meet.

Skimeister is a season-long event conducted by the Colorado High School Ski League which honors the top skier in both disciplines.

  • Aspen boys and Battle Mountain girls win skiing state championships

    (Bethany Brookens/CHSAANow.com)

DURANGO — Though the weather was unpredictable at the condensed two-day state skiing championships in Durango, as they say, the show must go on.

With powder dominating the landscape of Chapman Hill and Purgatory Resort, the Aspen boys and Battle Mountain girls ended an exciting couple of days with some hardware to take back home.

With the highest score of 676 total points, Battle Mountain’s girls defeated last year’s champion, Aspen, by 33 points.

The Aspen boys totaled 675 points, 97 more than-second place Battle Mountain.

Starting at 9:37 a.m. at Chapman Hill, the boys slalom kicked of the day. Vail Mountain School’s Shane Cole (45.24 seconds) won, Aspen’s Trey Thorpe (45.42), and Vail Mountain’s Mackay Pattison (47.76) was third.

With an impressive 20.87 second run to cap the victory over Thorpe (who finished .18 behind Cole), the senior veteran finally had his time to clinch what he had worked so hard to achieve.

“This is my last time ski racing in high school, and it means a lot because I fell both runs at states last year at Ski Cooper,” Cole said after learning the results. “It also means a lot because the conditions were difficult and it really was just anyone’s race. I’m really glad to come out with the win.”

As snow mounted across the mountain all morning, the top five finishers all posted quicker times in their second run compared to their first. With the snow playing faster and more compact to the surface, these elite skiers all took their game to the next level.

“The run was straighter the second go-around,” Cole said. “I started a little earlier the second run, so the snow conditions were a little bit better than the first run, not as rutted. The top of the hill was pretty icy and a pretty good surface while the bottom wasn’t as soft as I expected, so it was great, nothing really to it, just better conditions.”

Individually in fourth and fifth place, Battle Mountain’s Will Bettenhausen (46.29) and Nederland’s Talus Lantz (46.69) concluded the top five.

The girls category was owned by Battle Mountain’s dynamic duo: Gretchen Pavelich and Berit Frischholz.

Both of Pavelich’s runs led the girls with times of 23.49 (first run) and 22.10 (second run) as the senior won the event in 45.59.

Frischholz, a junior, put up a total time of 47.22 to finish second.

Middle Park placed three girls in the top 11 in Ella Wiser (third, 47.31), Bethanne Droll (ninth, 49.45) and Sofia Olsson (11th, 49.99).

The fourth and fifth individual finishes came from Steamboat’s Ella Pietras and Summit’s Olyvia Snyder.

As the alpine race completed, fans, teammates, and parents packed their bags and headed to Purgatory Resort at the Nordic Center. Snow continued to fall as 3 p.m. arrived.

Aspen’s Everett Olson, and Vail Mountain’s Emma Blakslee came out on top individually.

In the boys team race, Aspen repeated as champion with 675 points. It is the program’s ninth championship.

Battle Mountain’s boys finished second (578 points), Vail Mountain (563) was third, Middle Park (560) was fourth, and Summit (546) was fifth.

On the girls side, the championship is Battle Mountain’s fifth. The Huskies led the field with 676 points. Aspen (643) placed second, Summit (597) was third, Steamboat (578) was fourth, and Vail Mountain (525) was fifth.

  • Battle Mountain and Aspen headline first day of skiing championships

    State skiing
    (Adam Hothersall/CHSAANow.com)

DURANGO — On a snowy opening day of the 2019 state skiing championships at Purgatory Resort, the weather played a definite factor as Giant Slalom and Nordic events carried on.

Leading in total points after day one, Battle Mountain girls (340 points) and Aspen boys (338 points) head into the final day with confidence and points on their side.

Despite the postponement of the Slalom round Thursday — it will be held Friday at 9 a.m. at Chapman Hill — and the last-minute change of just one lone run of the GS, these two dominant programs didn’t struggle to rack-up numbers.

Winning the GS by one point, Battle Mountain’s girls recorded 171 total as three racers finished in the top seven of the contest: No. 2 Gretchen Pavelich, No. 3 Berit Frischholz and No. 7 Kiana Brausch.

Aspen, nipping at their heels, placed three in the first eight, including the leader, Levyn Thomas (39.61 seconds). Both groups found themselves far ahead of the rest of the teams: Steamboat (143), Summit (140) and Vail Mountain (136).

As for the boys, three teams in the Giant Slalom were neck and neck (and neck) of each other.

With a two-way tie atop the leaderboard, Battle Mountain and Vail Mountain both recorded 167 behind six skiers combined on the two teams in the top 12.

For Battle Mountain: Will Bettenhausen (3rd, 40.37), Max Timm (4th, 40.73) and Dominik Lettovsky (10th, 42.47) led the Huskies.

With a competition-best time of 39.81, Shane Cole, along with Robert Harnick (5th, 41.28) and Cole Pattison (12th, 42.75) had their squad right in the thick of things all day.

In third, and only a point back, Aspen, hoping to reclaim their title as boys champion liked their chances with nine of the top 18 performers on Thursday.

The Skiers were headlined by Trey Thorpe (2nd, 40.34), Noah Forman and Charlie Olsen (tied for 7th, 41.62). Fourth and fifth place in the event went to Nederland (148 points) and Middle Park (131 points)

Switching over to Nordic and the 5 Kilometer Classic, the girls of Battle Mountain found themselves atop of the leaderboard behind second, third and ninth-place finishes from Grace Johnson, Liz Harding and Naomi Harding with times of 19:27, 19:49 and 20:25 respectively.

Winning the event and dominating in doing so, Tai-Lee Smith of Summit recorded an impressive time of 19:14 to help her squad hang in at third-place with 157 points.

In second Aspen (No. 6 Emma Barsness and No. 7 Eva McDonough top finishers), recorded 158 points on the afternoon as seven of the first 20 to cross the finish line were Skiers.

Rounding out the top five in team points in Nordic No. 4 Steamboat (145 points) and No. 5 Durango.

In the boys team category of the Nordic, Aspen finds themselves with a 14-point lead with 172 points and eight skiers in the top 21 slots.

Winning the race, Vail Mountain’s Cameron Wolfe edged out Aspen’s Everett Olson by a toe length as both competitors finished with a time of 16:01.

Coming in third, Aspen’s Colt Whitley finished with a time of 16:06 as Durango’s Logan Moore and Middle Park’s Tyler Scholl rounded out the top five with times of 16:32 and 16:47, respectively.

As a group, Middle Park snuck its way into the No. 2 spot in the event despite only Scholl and Sebastian Brower making the first 13 slots.

Host team Durango finished third with 153 points, followed by Summit (147) and Battle Mountain (136).

The championships will resume at 9 a.m. Friday at Chapman Hill with the Slalom event. The two-day festivities will wrap up with Nordic once again at Purgatory Resort starting at 3 p.m.

FORT COLLINS — As Davy Brown strolled to the podium with a smile, she slapped hands with all the other championship finalists. It was her way of celebrating another state crown.

A title-winner both individually (100-yard backstroke) and as a team (Aspen) during the first-ever 3A state finals in 2017, Brown has been a force for years. She added to that status Saturday in her prep finale while clinching victories in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 08.65 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (57.58).

“I had a really big plateau for awhile,” Brown admitted. “It’s incredible to have overcome all that and to actually be back on my game.”

With a backstroke crown in her grasp as a sophomore, Brown seemed destined to claim further golds. Instead, she was eclipsed by Sydney Silver (St. Mary’s) in the 2018 final. That result led to some soul-searching, especially as Aspen dealt with adversity as a group.

“We’ve had a lot of unfortunate circumstances to bring us down, but it seems that we really know how to overcome things, especially with having relationships with each other and being able to hold each other up when falling,” she said.

On Saturday, emotion spilled out of Brown and why wouldn’t it? She was even part of a 3A record-setting relay group in the 200 freestyle (1:40.46) as the Skiers inched past a Pueblo County (1:40.60) team that also blew away their previous school and classification record of 1:41.06 from 2017.

“I think it’s a symbol of how far we have come as a team and I think it’s a symbol to me to show how far I can go,” Brown said. “I can succeed, I can overcome.”

Brown, Emily Kinney, Laila Khan Farooqi, and Kayla Tehrani broke new ground in Class 3A for Aspen.

Even so, Evergreen was able to secure the 3A team championship as Remi Gucker clinched both the 200 and 500 freestyle titles. Christina Crane snagged her share of points as well with runner-up finishes of her own (100 breaststroke, 100 free). Gucker, Crane, Maggie McDonald, and Hope Atkins also won the 400 free relay (3:39.31).

The Cougars, who piled up 428 points, topped the 4A state fields in 2014 and 2015. Pueblo County tallied 297 and matched their 2018 runner-up showing. The Hornets also claimed the win in the 200 medley relay.

As for the diving competition, a bit of magic happened when Rachel Alexander made a late charge to win her first state championship. The Discovery Canyon junior was in fourth after the prelims and third after the semifinals, but her 424.90 points surpassed Campbell Patteson’s (Kent Denver) 419.50.

“I had a few rough rounds this morning so I didn’t know if there was still a chance,” Alexander said. “Going into finals I was just going to give it my all and see how it went.”

She finished fourth at the state meet as a freshman and fifth as a sophomore, but shattered her own school record Saturday.

La Junta senior Emily Moreland made history for her school as well in winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.05.

“It means everything to me,” she said. “There’s only been two girls that have ever gotten state championships for swimming, so I just really like that I get to represent our community in a great way.”
