  • Boys golf regional roundup: Heritage wins at Colorado Springs Country Club

Heritage’s Sam Blackwood (left) claimed a regional championship on Monday. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story originally had Sam Blackwood as the sole winner, but scores were recalculated after the on-site reporter left the course. The story has been changed to reflect the accurate result.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Sam Blackwood and Canon Olkowski played well down the stretch and as a result are co-regional champions.

They both shot a one-under-par 70, one stroke better than teammate Blackwood’s teammate Ben Carrington, to take the Class 5A southern regional boys golf championship on Monday.

“My game was more steady,” Blackwood said of his play on the final nine holes. “My ball striking was a lot more inconsistent on the front nine. I found my swing on the back nine and that really helped.”

His birdie on his 18th hole proved to be timely as Olkowski sank a nearly 20-foot birdie putt to get to get to one-under as well.

Heritage also took the team win with Grand Junction finishing second. Both teams have qualified for the 2017 5A state tournament at CommonGround.

The top two teams in each region, along with the next 13 individual qualifiers, will head to state next month.

Complete results for each regional tournament can be found here.

3A 1: Defending champ Oliver Jack cruises.

Oliver Jack, the reigning state champion in Class 3A, cruised to a win in 3A’s Region 1 at East to Links.

Jack shot a 2-under 69. His round included five birdies, including his final two holes.

Jack’s teammate, Jackson Klutznick, tied for second with Lance Peters of Alamosa at 1-over. Klutznick tied for fourth at state last season.

Kent Denver also won the team title, shooting 1-over. Lutheran (+24) was the second-place team, and also qualified for state.

4A 1: Defending champ Luke Trujillo also cruises.

Discovery Canyon’s Luke Trujillo won 4A Region 1 at Elmwood by eight strokes, shooting a 5-under 65. Trujillo won the 4A championship last fall.

Niwot’s Jack Hoover placed second at 3-over, while Falcon’s Ryan Welsh was third (+5).

Discovery Canyon easily won the regional title as a team at +11. Niwot (+33) also qualified as a team.

Montrose golfer Micah Stangebye won a playoff to win 4A’s Region 4, held at The Bridges at Black Canyon.

Stangebye and Bridger Tenney of Evergreen were tied at even par after the round, but Stangebye won on the second playoff hole.

Montrose’s Dawson Hussong (+1) finished third.

Montrose also won the region championship as a team, finishing 3-over as a group. Evergreen (+4) was second.

3A 4: Aspen runs away with region championship.

Aspen won the 3A Region 4 title held at Devils Thumb with a stunning 6-under team finish. That was 22 strokes better than second-place Basalt, which finished at 16-over.

The Skiers had an astonishing four golfers finish under par — the top four finishers — led by individual champion Carter Hall at 3-under. Dawson Holmes was 2-under.

Davis Bryant is headed back to another state tournament.

The Eaglecrest senior, who was second at the 5A tourney last season, tied for first with Rock Canyon’s Kieran McMullen at the Central Region, which was played at Plum Creek.

The region did not hold a playoff to determine the individual medalist.

Fossil Ridge’s Dillon Stewart tied for third with Mountain Range’s Connor Jones.

Fossil Ridge was the top team at 5-over. Rock Canyon placed second at 6-over.

5A Northern: Regis Jesuit’s McCoy is the top individual.

Monarch’s Spencer Daake (+1) was second individually, while Chaparral’s Bryce Howard (+3) placed third.

The Raiders also won the team championship at +11. Monarch qualified for state, as well, after finishing second at 16-over.

5A Western: Arapahoe wins team and individual crowns.

Arapahoe’s Tommy Packer captured the 5A Western region with a 1-under 71. Lakewood’s Jack Castiglia finished second at even par at the event, which was hosted by Broadlands.

The Warriors were also the top team finisher at 9-over. Fairview (+12) placed second.

3A 2: Agelopoulos, Grossenbacher battle for individual title.

Colorado Academy’s Christian Agelopoulos and Eaton’s Peter Grossenbacher were tied at 2-under at 18 holes at 3A’s Region 2, held at CommonGround.

Grossenbacher then won in a playoff on the first hole.

CA was the top team, finishing at 2-over. Eaton (+11) was second, and qualified for the state tournament.

  • Football roundup: Garnes leads No. 3 Eaglecrest past No. 5 Grandview

    Eaglecrest Grandview football
    More photos. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Victor Garnes had two receiving touchdowns, and third-ranked Eaglecrest football beat Grandview 21-14 in a big Class 5A game on Friday.

Eaglecrest is now 3-0, while Grandview moves to 2-1.

Both of Garnes’ scores came on great throws from Raptors quarterback Jalen Mergerson, a senior.

The first came on fourth-and-11, midway through the second quarter. The second was a 34-yard catch and run that saw Garnes juke out a crowd of defenders on his way to the end zone.

Kenny Wanting got Eaglecrest started with a 2-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter.

Grandview’s Aaron Harris blocked a punt that the Wolves recovered for a touchdown to cut into Eaglecrest’s lead early in the third quarter. They had possession deep in the Raptors’ territory on their next possession, but the drive stalled and the Wolves turned it over on fourth down.

Eaglecrest then went back up 21-7, and held that lead for most of the fourth quarter.

Grandview did score with 31 seconds remaining to make it a one-score game again, but Eaglecrest recovered the onside kick.

    4A: (10) Pueblo West 55, (3) Pueblo South 54 (2OT)

In a wild one, Pueblo West took down their crosstown foe in two overtimes.

The game was tied at 42 after regulation — but Pueblo West had to rally to get to that point. South led 35-21 at the half, only to see Pueblo West tie the game at 35 in the third quarter.

South again took the lead late in the third quarter at 42-35, and West again responded with a touchdown with four minutes to play.

In overtime, West scored first, only to miss an extra point attempt. South also scored — and also missed an extra point.

South opened the second overtime with another touchdown, but again missed the extra point. West responded with a score, and the extra point was good, giving the Cyclones the win.

After a double-bogey on No. 4 brought him back to even, Montrose’s Dawson Hussong birdied three of four holes en route to shooting a three-under-par 69 to win the Steamboat Springs Invitational on Thursday.

  • 3A boys hoops Great 8 roundup: Strong second half propels Sterling into semis

    Sterling boys basketball team
    (Katie Pickrell/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER – Every time Manitou Springs senior Lucas Rodholm hit a big shot Thursday night – and there were plenty of them – Sterling’s boys basketball team hand an answer.

The Tigers never allowed the second-seeded Mustangs the opportunity to close gap down the stretch of the Class 3A state quarterfinal game at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gymnasium. Instead, it was No. 10 Sterling that punched its ticket into Friday’s Final 4 after a 58-50 victory.

“It’s a great feeling. Our school hasn’t been to the final four since I think they won (4A in 2011),” Sterling senior Riley Schaefer said. “We’ve worked so hard. I’m just glad we got this – I think we deserve it.”

The Tigers (20-5) face two-time defending state champion Colorado Springs Christian at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Top-seeded Kent Denver draws Faith Christian in the other semifinal.

“It will be a huge challenge. The (Justin) Engesser kid is really, really good and they’re really well-coached,” Tigers coach Mike Holloway said. “We’ll come back and hope to play our best game of the season, because that’s certainly what it will take.”

Rodholm scored a game-high 30 points for Manitou Springs (22-3). He did most of his damage in the second half, but Sterling responded each time. Schaefer hit a pair of big 3-pointers in the third quarter, and sophomore Carter Keil also had a big half.

“I think when we hits some 3s, they really had to get out on us,” Schaefer said. “It helped us – we could give a pump-fake and we could get by them and get people open.”

Keil and Bodie Hume combined for 30 points to pace Sterling.

    (1) Kent Denver 56, (9) Basalt 54

The top-seeded Sun Devils trailed by 10 points headed into the fourth quarter, but Kent Denver rallied behind a number of big shots to hold off Basalt’s upset bid.

Coby Gold scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. Rory Buck put the Sun Devils (22-3) up by one with 1:44 to go, and Kent went 5-for-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch to put it away.

Michael Glen scored a game-high 31 points for the Longhorns (21-4), but the team struggled to find its shot in the fourth quarter. It was the team’s first Great 8 appearance since 1989.
