  • Boys basketball rankings: Arvada West, Rock Canyon join 5A poll

    The No. 1-ranked teams in this week’s CHSAANow.com basketball polls held steady, but a flurry of new teams were added.

    With play beginning last week and most teams in action it was only a matter of time before the look and feel of the polls started shifting, specifically in the higher classes. But the top teams of Overland (5A), Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Fleming (1A) all held on to the top spots in their respective divisions.

    The Class 5A poll saw the addition of two new teams in Arvada West at No. 8 and Rock Canyon at No. 9. The Wildcats started the season on a tear, taking down Smoky Hill, Northglenn and Mountain Range.

    Rock Canyon overcame a season-opening loss to Eaglecrest and rattled off three straight wins of their own, good enough to crack this week’s poll.

    In 4A, Valor Christian showed they can pose a threat to Longmont as the top seed in the class as they ran out defending champion Air Academy. But the most impressive jump this week came from Pueblo South, which jumped from No. 10 to No. 3 on the strength of a 63-59 win over Lewis-Palmer.

    The Rangers only fell one slot thanks to a one-point win over Pueblo Central, which still looks like a good team despite the loss of Kobi Betts for the season.

    Mead and Green Mountain are this week’s 4A newcomers, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

    It was the 3A poll that look the most different from the preseason rankings. They added four new teams, a staggering number for any week. Bennett, Grand Valley, DSST-Stapleton and Eaton all jump into the top 10 this week.

    It was Bennett who made the biggest impact, breaking at No. 5. They topped Lutheran (who jumped one spot this week to No. 7) 49-47 Friday. Grand Valley, DSST-Stapleton and Eaton came in at 8, 9 and 10.

    No new teams were added to this week’s 2A rankings, but there was some shuffling that took place.

    Rye fell two slots to No. 6 after a 61-57 loss to Alamosa and Sedgwick County jumped three spots from No. 8 to No. 5.

    Three new teams jumped into 1A’s top 10 as Sierra Grande (No. 6), Wiley (No. 8) and Shining Mountain (No. 9) all jump into the basketball rankings for the first time this year.

    Fleming was the only top seed to actually lose this week as they fell to Holyoke 68-65. Even with the loss, they held on to the top spot in this week’s rankings. Holyoke is ranked No. 4 in 2A.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • State football brackets released for five classes on Sunday

    AURORA — The state playoff brackets for five classifications — 5A, 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man — were released on Sunday. Postseason play in each class begins this week.

    The 5A bracket, a 32-team field, is the only playoff of the bunch that does not feature a No. 1 overall seed. Instead, it seeds teams Nos. 1-8 into one of four quadrants. The four No. 1 seeds are Columbine (9-0), Valor Christian (7-2), Grandview (7-2) and defending champion Cherry Creek (7-2).

    No. 2 seeds, who are also hosting first-round games, include Regis Jesuit (7-2), Arapahoe (9-0), Pomona (6-3), and Westminster (9-0).

    There were some questions as to why Arapahoe got a No. 2 seed behind Grandview, who the Warriors beat this season. Asked about that specific situation, the 5A committee said it “was due to the quality of (Grandview’s) wins late, how early Arapahoe and Grandview played, and overall strength of Arapahoe’s schedule.”

    Also hosting first round games in 5A are No. 3 seeds — Legacy, Ralston Valley, Horizon, and Fountain-Fort Carson — and No. 4 seeds — Heritage, Fairview, Mountain Vista and Mullen.

    The 32-team 5A field is set by the final Wild Card points, which were released on Saturday morning. From there, the committee has a number of criteria it can use to seed the teams, including the use of the CHSAA RPI formula.

    The 5A title game will be played on Dec. 5 at Mile High.

    In 2A, Bayfield heads the field as the No. 1 overall seed. The Wolverines are 8-0.

    Other top seeds in the 2A field who will host games in the first round include No. 2 Kent Denver, No. 3 Platte Valley, No. 4 La Junta, No. 5 Sterling, No. 6 Alameda, No. 7 Bennett and No. 8 Moffat County.

    Brush, the defending champion, is seeded No. 9.

    The 2A championship game is set for Nov. 28 at a home site.

    Leading the 1A field is top overall seed Buena Vista. Also hosting games in the first round are No. 2 Resurrection Christian, No. 3 Paonia, No. 4 Monte Vista, No. 5 Crowley County, No. 6 Burlington, No. 7 Platte Canyon and No. 8 Wiggins.

    Paonia is the defending champion.

    The 1A title game will be played No. 28, also at a home site.

    8-man’s playoff field is led by No. 1 Sedgwick County. Other first-round hosts include No. 2 Norwood, No. 3 Akron, No. 4 Sargent, No. 5 Springfield, No. 6 Dayspring Christian, No. 7 West Grand and No. 8 Hoehne.

    Defending champion Caliche did not make the field.

    The 8-man title game will be played No. 28 at a home site.

    In 6-man, Kit Carson got the top seed. Those teams also hosting first-round games are No. 2 Fleming, No. 3 Eads and No. 4 Arickaree/Woodlin. Arickaree/Woodlin is the defending champion.

    The 6-man title tilt will kick off the championship slate with its game scheduled for Nov. 21. It will be played at a home site.

  • Football rankings: Bayfield moves to the top of 2A

    There’s a new No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com Class 2A football rankings. After a convincing 41-7 win over Alamosa, Bayfield comes in at the top spot of this week’s poll.

    The rest of the 2A rankings are relatively unchanged as no teams dropped out this week. Despite a 41-13 win over Brush, Sterling was unable to gain any spots, but look very dangerous as the No. 6 team in 2A.

    Columbine held on to the top spot in the 5A rankings with an impressive 31-7 win over Chatfield Friday. The big surprise in 5A comes with Grandview’s jump from No. 4 to No. 2, overtaking Valor Christian, which won a physical 10-0 game against Cherry Creek on Friday night.

    The Wolves and Eagles will play this coming Friday with the Centennial League title up for grabs. That game is scheduled for a 8 p.m. kick and Altitude will carry the broadcast.

    Fresh off a 41-3 win over Durango, Pine Creek comes in as the unanimous No. 1 team in 4A. The top four teams from last week were able to hold their positions.

    Denver South and Wheat Ridge both made their way into this week’s top 10 with the Rebels coming in at No. 9 and the Farmers taking the No. 10 spot. Wheat Ridge topped Aurora Central 37-14 Friday.

    There were very few changes to the 3A poll this week. Pueblo East remains in the top spot after a 36-21 win over The Classical Academy.

    TCA fell one spot as a result of the loss and Mean moved up to No. 9.

    Buena Vista holds on to the No. 1 in 1A this week and the rankings overall went unchanged from a week ago.

    In 8-man, Sedgwick County remains at No. 1 after a 44-18 win over No. 5 Dayspring Christian Academy. Vail Christian jumped two spots to No. 7 and Hohne is the lone newcomer to this week’s poll.

    Fleming is still the No. 1 team in 6-man. No newcomers were added to this week’s rankings, but Peetz did fall two spots to No. 7 despite a 55-13 win over Weldon Valley.

  • Football roundup: Pomona upsets rival Ralston Valley

    Pomona’s defense had an outstanding night, limiting Ralston Valley to just two field goals in a 13-6 win on Friday night.

    The Panthers, ranked No. 8 in Class 5A, pulled the upset of the No. 5 Mustangs. The win continued a streak of equality in the rivalry: Since 2009, Pomona and Ralston Valley have traded wins every other year.

    On Friday, Pomona grabbed a 7-0 lead after the first quarter on a punt return for a score. Ralston Valley got a field goal near the end of halftime, but Pomona answered with a touchdown early in the third quarter.

    Ralston Valley did cut it to a one-score game with another field goal, but couldn’t get any closer.

    3A: (1) Pueblo East 36, (9) The Classical Academy 21

    The Classical Academy led 7-0 early, but then Pueblo East took over. The Eagles scored 19 unanswered points to take a 19-7 lead at halftime, thanks to five Titan turnovers.

    That lead only grew as the second half opened. It was 26-7, then 33-7, before TCA finally broke the string of points in the fourth quarter.

    Pueblo East, the defending 3A champions, is now 7-1 with the lone loss coming to 4A No. 2 Longmont in Zero Week.

    2A: (6) Sterling 41, (7) Brush 13

    Sterling jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter, but Brush rallied to tie it at 13 at halftime.

    Austin Burkholder’s rushing score late in the third quarter gave Sterling the lead back and the Tigers never looked back. Freshman Isaac Harris made it 27-13 a short while later, Burkholder added another score — his fourth — and Sterling cruised.

    8-man: (1) Sedgwick County 44, (5) Dayspring Christian 18

    Sedgwick County jumped out to a 30-3 lead at halftime, and kept the pressure on in an important win for the playoff picture.

    The loss avenged a 53-21 defeat last season.

    2A: (10) Bennett 40, Strasburg 39

    Bennett stopped a two-point conversion in the final minutes to hold off the upset bid.

    “Big play from Jesse Rodriquez, our corner, (who) intercepted their two-point conversion try,” coach Rick Jacoby told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show.

    Bennett recovered the ensuing onside kick and then ran out the clock.

    Bennett had led with three minutes to play, but Strasburg responded with its own touchdown with under two minutes left prior to the two-point attempt.

    “We were behind most of the game,” Jacoby said. “We didn’t take the lead until about the seven minute mark of the fourth. We were down, I think, 19 at one point in the third quarter. We ended up being able to dig ourselves out of the hole.”

    With the win, Bennett clinched the Frontier League championship.

    • West Grand beat Rocky Mountain Lutheran 80-28 on Friday, giving coach Chris Brown his 305th career win. He can tie the state record for victories at Vail Christian next week.
    • 2A No. 4 La Junta beat Lamar 35-0 in Colorado’s second-oldest rivalry, a matchup known as the Whistle Game.
    • 5A No. 5 Palisade had 689 total yards in a 62-18 win over Grand Junction Central.
    • In 8-man, No. 4 Sargent beat No. 6 Dove Creek 30-18. “It was a tough battle,” Sargent coach Trevan Pepper told the Scoreboard Show. “We were a little bit asleep getting off the bus on that first drive, they went down and scored, and then we kind of stepped it up on defense the rest of the first half.”
    • 1A No. 6 Crowley County won a tough game against Limon, 21-14. The Chargers won the South Central League as a result. “We had a big, long drive in the third quarter and were able to put it in on a little option play,” coach Brandon Roe told the Scoreboard Show. “We just played really great team defense after that.”
    • Thompson Valley upset 4A No. 7 Greeley West 8-0.
    • Merino knocked off No. 10 Haxtun in 8-man, 26-21.

  • Football rankings: Columbine ascends to the top of 5A

    Following a 42-35 win over Pomona Friday night, combined with Cherry Creek’s 28-20 loss to Grandview, Columbine takes over the top spot in this week’s Class 5A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

    Cherry Creek falls to No. 2 as a result of their loss to the Wolves. This week, they square off against No. 3 Valor Christian in a rematch of last year’s 5A state championship game. The Bruins walked away with a 25-24 win. Cherry Creek also won last year’s regular season meeting 33-17, a game in which the Bruins didn’t allow a single point in the second half.

    No new teams were added to the 5A poll this week, but with its upset win over Cherry Creek, Grandview jumped from No. 9 to No. 4.

    Like they have all season long, the Pine Creek Eagles firmly held on to the No. 1 spot in 4A. Like the 5A poll, no new teams were added in 4A.

    Durango was able to beat Palmer Ridge 48-35, helping them jump up to No. 5 in the rankings. The Demons travel to Colorado Springs this week for a league game against the No. 1 Eagles.

    This will be the fourth time this season that Pine Creek will be facing a team also ranked in 4A’s top five. They won the three previous games by a combined score of 107-38.

    Pueblo East remains a strong favorite in 3A and is still ranked as the top team in that class. Both Roosevelt and Rifle garnered first place votes thanks to weekend wins over other top 10 teams. Roosevelt topped Holy Family in a shootout, 64-63 and Rifle edged Palisade 13-7.

    No new teams broke into the 3A poll this week.

    A great week for Kent Denver continues in this week’s 2A poll. After Scott Yates recorded his 300th win, the Sun Devils held on to the No. 1 spot in 2A.

    There were two new additions to this week’s 2A rankings as Moffat County comes in at No. 9 and Bennett breaks in at No. 10.

    Buena Vista is still holding on to the top spot of the 1A rankings, but Resurrection Christian is nipping on their heels, trailing by only two points.

    Meeker, who dropped out of the 1A poll last week, returns at No. 8.

    Sedgwick County is still the top team in the 8-man rankings. There was little movement in that poll, but undefeated Vail Christian did make it’s way into the top 10, landing at No. 9.

    Although Fleming is still the No. 1 team in 6-man, there was movement near the top of that poll. Kit Carson topped Eads 22-8 Friday night causing those two teams to swap places.

    Kit Carson now sits at No. 2 while Eads fell only one spot to No. 3.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Colorado Preps‘ Kevin Shaffer looks at Week 5’s big football matchups around the state.

  • Reid Kahl gets fresh start with defending 2A football champ Brush

    [dropcap]R[/dropcap]eid Kahl is no stranger to defending state championships. Kahl was able to secure Class 4A titles in 2006 and 2008 while he was the head coach at Wheat Ridge.

    Now he has the task of defending a 2A championship. Only, unlike those at Wheat Ridge, this is not a state championship that he won. This offseason, Kahl was hired by Brush to take over for Randy Dreitz. Dreitz left the team in March after leading the Beetdiggers to the 2A state championship.

    “After the season was over last year, everybody pretty much knew that Randy was going to retire,” Kahl said. “I didn’t think much about it until later in the spring when the job opened up. I had a lot of people from the community reach out to me and show a lot of interest in me doing it.”

    The start of Brush’s title defense is a more interesting story for Kahl himself rather than the team. The Beetdiggers kick their season off by traveling to Fort Morgan on Sept. 4. Kahl was a standout football player for the Mustangs, who happen to be the Beetdiggers’ rivals.

    “I’m going to be completely honest with you, and I’m not just saying this, it’s been a much bigger deal for everyone else than it has been for me,” Kahl said. “It’s been since 2001, which was my last season in Fort Morgan.”

    Karl left the Farmers after the 2013 season and took last year off before taking the job at Brush. It was a summer of turnover at the school as a new principal and athletic director were named at the same meeting.

    To echo the sentiment of Kahl, it was really the community support that brought his name into the coaching search since there wasn’t an athletic director to include him in it.

    “None of us that hired Reid were here,” said athletic director Scott Hodgson, who is also in his first year at the school after coming over from Holly. “Once we found out that was the choice, we were really happy. He’s had great success everywhere he’s been.”

    Karl comes in this season with the task of defending a state championship that he was not a part of. The Beetdiggers also lost a big senior class, including 2A player of the year Kyle Rosenbrock.

    Fair or not, this young Brush team comes into the season, not only with a new coach, but also with a target on its back.

    “It’s a different situation and it’s not an easy situation,” Kahl said. “They graduated a ton of seniors last year and I have a really inexperienced team. We all know that there’s a big target on our back and I talked to the kids about it when I first met with them.”

    But that won’t matter to the teams on the opposite sideline. They’ll only see “Brush” on the jerseys and they’ll know that was the last team to walk away as state champions.

    Besides, Brush opened up as preseason No. 1 in 2A on Monday.

    Karl knows the expectations are high and that he is walking into a program that will expect him to win. His track record at Wheat Ridge indicates that he can find success. His plan is to just run the systems that he’s comfortable running and hope that it translates into wins for the Beetdiggers.

    “I’ve installed a lot of the same offense that I run wherever I’m (coaching),” Kahl said. “We spent a lot time on it over the summer and the kids have done a nice job picking it up.”

    He gets his chance to see just how well they’ve picked it up when Brush travels to Fort Morgan on Sept. 4. Kahl has plenty of good memories from when he was with the Mustangs but knows once the ball kicked-off, it’s time to focus on his job as the coach of the Beetdiggers.

    “After 26 years of coaching, it’s not like I was there yesterday,” Kahl said. “I think it seems to be a big to people on the outside and not so much for me.”
