  • Marble and Kountz lead No. 5 Denver East boys basketball over No. 10 Doherty

COLORADO SPRINGS — A battle of two of the state’s top 10 Class 5A teams did not disappoint. Denver East boy’s basketball won a close game against Doherty on Tuesday night with a final of 70-65.

The Spartans(16-4 overall, 9-0 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) held a lead through the first two quarters and seemed to have control of the game, but as the second half of the game started Denver East came charging.

The fourth quarter started with No. 5 Denver East (18-2 overall, 5-0 5A/4A Denver Prep) ahead 44-43 and the lead was extended throughout the quarter thanks to rebounds, passing, and stellar defense. No. 10 Doherty came back alive and a basket by Joe Golden got the Spartans back within three points.

Then like a yo-yo, East’s Kwane Marble II got a basket and Golden went and got a basket and this continued for the next three plays.

With only 30 seconds left and a score of 68-65, Doherty’s Alijah Bates stole the ball, but East’s Will Sass swiped it right back and gave East the ball with 20 seconds left. Daylen Kountz then was fouled and made two free throws that cemented their win and gave Doherty their first lost at home this season.

“Our boys were very resilient” Denver East coach Rudy Carey said. “We scraped, we found some combinations that worked well, and we worked hard.”

Denver East was led in scoring by Marble with 20 points and Kountz with 22 points.

“We did well rebounding, playing defense, moving the ball around, and communicating,” Marble said. “Plus, I felt that I played good, well, I guess great and helped my team get the win tonight.”

    (Kelsey Lowry/CHSAANow.com)

Despite the loss, Doherty fought all game and was led in scoring by Bates and Golden who scored 15 each. All but two of Golden’s output came in the fourth quarter.

“We showed up and early on offensively we made shots, we got good looks, and we did a good job defensively limiting their two best players,” Doherty coach Eric Steinert said. “But with 23 turnovers its not going to cut it against a good team like Denver East.”

Doherty will face Rampart on Thursday and continue to fight to get a conference championship.

With Tuesday’s win, Denver East extends its winning streak to nine games and it seems like everything is setting up nicely for the team going into the final two weeks of games. The coaches and players are looking forward to what the next few weeks bring for their team as they go up against Denver South on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to play hard so that we can have a shot at the state title this year” Marble said.

The last state championship for East came in 2014. If the Angels can make a run, they would set a record with the most state basketball championships in Colorado history.

  • No. 9 Doherty boys basketball holds on to beat Liberty

    (Kelsey Lowry/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — In a game that was consistently back and forth, the Doherty boys basketball had just enough to edge Liberty on Thursday night.

Grasping onto a 38-35 lead at the end of the third quarter, the Spartans, ranked No. 9 in Class 5A, held off Liberty 57-54.

In such a close game, it was free throws that made an impact. Doherty made 9-of-15 shots from the line, while the Lancers made 15-of-18.

“I don’t think that both teams played well, just at times,” Doherty coach Eric Steinert said. “But when the game did get tough, we played our best and I’m proud of our guys for that.”

Doherty was led by senior Kyrele Benford, who scored a vital 18 points even though he was sick.

“He was throwing up all of half time and came out and played one of his best halves of basketball,” Steinert said. “Defensively he was locked in and he didn’t come out even when he was sick, and that is a special thing.”

Doherty was also helped by junior Alijah Bates, who supplied 12 points, and seniors Joe golden and Josh Walker, who both provided 10 points.

It was a five-point game or closer throughout the final quarter. Liberty surged back with a jump shot by senior Kyle Bohuslavsky, and Moz Doria drove in a layup in the final minutes of the game.

However, Doherty’s Bates scored the final bucket with a monumental dunk and eventual game-winning basket within the last seconds of the game.

The Lancers had a thrilling drive of eight points within the last few minutes thanks to shots made by Doria, Jacob Burns, and Bohuslavsky. Doria led Liberty with 28 points. Despite the impressive numbers put up by Liberty, missed rebounds and turnovers proved to be the difference-maker in a well-fought battle.

With Doherty beating Liberty for the second time in a month, the Spartans will need to keep this momentum as they play league games against Coronado and Pine Creek in the next week.

“Close games like these have value for playoffs because everyone gives you their best shot,” Steinert said. “And playing games like these that are tough against good teams can help us get better prepared for that.”

  • Passion, intensity match respect in the boys basketball rivalry between Doherty and Palmer

    Doherty Palmer boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Palmer basketball coach Jimmy Grantz is a graduate of Doherty High School. More than a lot of people, he sees the crossover of students and athletes from both schools and understand that has truly evolved into one of the most intense rivalries throughout the state of Colorado.

But it wasn’t always this way. Back in his day, Doherty’s big rival was Mitchell, a different District 11 school.

“This rivalry didn’t really start to pick up until the early 90’s,” Grantz said.

And picked up it has. Saturday marked the first meeting of the D-11 foes this season. The bleachers at Doherty were so packed that athletic director Chris Noll had to rope off a few rows so game workers had room to navigate.

The administrations of the two schools promote the game as a “rivalry with respect.” Grantz points out that the has coached several Doherty players in various phases of their life.

Before Alijah Bates dropped 18 points in the Spartans 66-53 win, he played middle school football for Grantz. Kyrele Benfrod, who knocked down a big 3-pointer to put the Spartans (11-2 overall, 2-0 Class 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) up 12 in the first, has knows the Terrors coach since he was in seventh grade.

They’re all buddies. They all cross paths. There is certainly respect there.

    Doherty Palmer boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

But at the end of the day, there is also an intensity level that always comes when competing against a rival.

“The intensity is always up,” Doherty senior Joe Golden said. “Palmer always gives us their best game and it’s always a great, fun atmosphere to be in.”

Golden matched Bates for a game-high 18 points in the win, 10 of them coming in the first quarter. Gone are the days of Brevin Brimble and the threat of 3-point shots falling en mass.

The offensive plan was cut and dry early and that was to work the ball into the post where Bates and Golden were able to thrive and help Doherty grab the lead after the first quarter.

“I just try to do whatever I can to help my team,” Golden said. “Sometimes shots aren’t falling and someone has to pick it up so I try to be that guy.”

The Terrors (6-8, 0-3) had to get points from everyone if they wanted to a chance to down the defending CSML champs. Isaiah Robinson scored 15 and Darrien Meyers scored 14.

Palmer connected on eight total 3-pointers, but it just wasn’t enough to keep pace.

“We played a lot better tonight than we did against Liberty last Tuesday,” Grantz said. “That’s encouraging because we don’t match up and at all. Not many teams do.”

On the other bench, Doherty coach Eric Steinert got his first taste of this rivalry. With just two losses on the season, Steinert has done a good job keeping the 5A No. 7 Spartans focused on the task at hand. But it was unexpected for him when he felt like his guys got a little too caught up in the atmosphere of this specific game.

“We talk about culture, we talk about mindset, we talk about being in the moment,” Steinert said. “I thought we lacked a little bit in that tonight.”

He’ll have just under a month to get his boys ready for the same game, but in a hostile environment. Doherty will travel to Palmer on Feb. 10.

Coming off a loss in the rivalry on Saturday, when kids fill the halls at the corner of Nevada and Platte in downtown Colorado Springs, they’ll be looking ahead for their chance at redemption.

“I don’t know what it’s like (at Doherty), but three weeks before the game kids will ask me when do we play Doherty,” Grantz said. “We have six games before we play Doherty, but (the intensity) is always there.”

And judging from the handshakes and hugs at the conclusion of Saturday’s game, so is the respect.
