  • With loads of talent back, Fleming again a favorite in 1A volleyball

    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Fleming volleyball coach Derek Herbert can’t help but smile when he heads to the gym for preseason practice this year.

Herbert has one of those teams that, for Class 1A coaches, usually come far and between.

Fleming captured the 1A state title last fall with a junior-laden team. In fact, of the four seniors on the roster, only one started.

Among the returning starters who received all-state recognition last fall are 5-foot-11 middle hitter Timmi Keisel, 5-foot-2 libero Megan Chintala and 5-foot-6 setter Rachel Frantz — all first-team selections — along with second-team all-state outside hitter Deborah Kurtzer. Keisel was the 1A player of the year.

“We’ve got some talent,” an understated Herbert said, “but our biggest key is how we work together. A lot still has to come together.”

Fleming lost only two games in winning pool play, the semifinals and the championship match to take last year’s state title.

“It takes a lot of chemistry,” Herbert said of the main ingredient of earning a state championship. He should know. Last year’s title victory was Fleming’s fourth in seven years.

This season, the Wildcats open as No. 1 in the preseason rankings.

The road to a second straight state title will not be without its challenges. Of the eight teams qualifying for last year’s state tournament, only Dove Creek, which lost to Fleming in the title match, and Caliche were senior dominated. Caliche has since moved up to 2A.

Otis, a four-time state champion, graduated just one player. Idalia, which had no seniors on its state qualifying squad, could have perhaps the tallest team in 1A with 5-10 outside hitter Reagan Shaffer and 5-10 right-side hitter Stephanie Helling. The Bulldogs and Wolves should compete for supremacy in the YWKC League.

Sangre de Cristo, which qualified for last season’s 2A tournament, drops to and could be the team to get past in the Southern Peaks League. It also graduated just one player.

Look for 6-3 senior outside hitter Tanaia Hansen of Eads to be among the dominant forces on net. Kit Carson, another High Plains League power, is also expected to make a strong run toward a return state tournament appearance.

Another frequent state qualifier, Flager, will again be a force in the Lower Platte League.

Then there are teams such as Weldon Valley, which gave Fleming all it could handle in the district playoffs last November. The Warriors, which were a sophomore-dominated team, got better as the season progressed.

“1A’s going to be really tough,” said Herbert, who’s in his 11th season as the Wildcats’ head coach.

Fortunately for him, that starts with the defending state champs.

Defending champions head six of football’s seven preseason CHSAANow.com rankings, which were unveiled Monday morning.

The lone exception is Lutheran in Class 3A — which saw both its champion (Coronado) and runner-up (Silver Creek) move up to 4A this cycle.

In fact, that ranking was also the most split of any other, with both Lutheran and preseason No. 2 Delta both getting three first-place votes. Lutheran got the No. 1 nod with 65 total points. Delta had 53 points.

Lutheran was eliminated in the first round of the 3A playoffs last season, while Delta made the semifinals. Lutheran is entering its first season under new coach Blair Hubbard, formerly of Faith Christian.

Valor Christian, a five-time defending champion across three classifications, opens up as No. 1 in Class 5A for the second year in a row. The Eagles topped Fairview to win the 5A title last season.

Cherry Creek, a quarterfinalist a year ago, is No. 2 in 5A. Cherokee Trail is ranked third, Pomona is fourth and Columbine is fifth.

Chatfield begins the season as No. 6, Regis Jesuit is No. 7, Grandview is No. 8, Ralston Valley is No. 9 and Fairview rounds out the preseason poll.

Among those receiving votes in 5A were ThunderRidge, Overland, newcomer Monarch and Legend.

In 4A, Pine Creek begins as the No. 1 team. The Eagles beat Montrose in last year’s title game. Montrose is No. 2 in the ranking.

Other preseason No. 1 teams are Platte Valley (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Stratton/Liberty (6-man).

The rankings are voted upon by coaches and select media members, and are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, rankings will be released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Caliche wins 1A, claims first baseball title in school history

LAKEWOOD — The heartbreak ended for Caliche on Thursday afternoon on Keli McGregor Field at All Star Park in Lakewood.

After coming up short in the 8-man football title game and losing by a point in the Class 1A boys basketball championship this school year, the Buffaloes were able to finally hoist a championship trophy.

Caliche dominated the 1A baseball title game, defeating Dove Creek 17-1 to win the school first-ever state baseball championship.

“It’s relief. The pressure has been lifted off,” said Caliche junior Austin Yahn, who reached base and scored in all five plate-appearances in the championship game. “We finally got first.”

The majority of the Buffaloes’ key players were on both those state runner-up teams in the fall and winter.

“It was tough being second place in both football and basketball,” Caliche senior Mitch Davison said. “It’s really awesome to win it in baseball. We wish we could have got those other two, but this feels great.”

Davison was the starting quarterback and leading rusher for Caliche’s football team. He was also the leading scorer on the basketball team this winter. The senior played a huge role Thursday afternoon in the Buffaloes snaring a state title that eluded them all school year.

Davison pitched a complete-game on the mound. He gave up just one unearned run to the Bulldogs (7-15) in the bottom of the fourth inning. He surrendered just three hits and struck out nine to earn his fifth victory of the season.

“I knew it wouldn’t be high scoring, for them (Dove Creek) anyways,” Caliche coach J.P. Lambrecht said after his team completed a five-game postseason run where the Buffaloes outscored their opponents 63-3. “Mitch throws good. He is always round the plate and throws strikes. He has been a phenomenal thrower for me.”

The senior was also effective at the plate. Davison had a big two-run double in the second inning that pushed the Buffaloes lead to 5-0. He also pulled a two-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the fourth inning, extending Caliche’s lead to 8-0.

“I was just swinging for a good base hit,” Davison said of his second home run of the season. “It ended up being a home run.”

Despite his monster game, Davison deflected the credit.

“My teammates behind me had a great game. They played very well,” Davison said of his defense that committed just one error. “It wasn’t just me. Everyone helped out.”

Evidence that it was a team effort is Caliche’s No. 9 hitter Jayden Stieb. The senior took advantage of two walks and two errors to reach base and eventually score on all four of his at-bats.

Caliche (12-11) managed 13 hits and took advantage of eight walks and eight defensive errors by Dove Creek.

“You’ve got to get on base with walks, errors and hits, whatever,” Lambrecht said. “You have to put the pressure on the defense.”

Dove Creek’s lone run came on an RBI double by junior Alex Ogas in the bottom of the fourth inning. Caliche answered in the sixth inning with two runs, but really poured it on in the top of the seventh with a seven-run inning.

“I think we were pretty calm and confident in ourselves,” said Davison, who struck out the final two Bulldog batters to end the game and proceeded to be at the bottom of a dog pile near the mound as Caliche players celebrated the win. “We’ve been here a couple of times in state championship games. We played to the best of our ability.”

Yahn admitted it was a struggle to get into baseball mode after losing the state basketball title game 52-51 on March 15. The Buffaloes lost their first six games of the season.

“Our record shows it took awhile to focus, we are only one game above .500,” Yahn said. “It didn’t feel right playing baseball until about mid-season. We turned it around.”
