  • Montrose boys soccer defeats 3A No. 4 Delta

    (Tom Hoganson)

Montrose boys soccer hosted 3A No. 4 Delta on Tuesday, and came away with a 5-2 win.

Tied at 2-2, Montrose scored three second half goals to secure the victory.

“I am really proud of the resilience that my team showed today,” Montrose coach Cassie Snyder said. “We played hard the whole game and when we needed to capitalize on our opportunities the most, we came through at the end and put away three goals.”

Each team scored two first half goals. Montrose’s Bryan Delgado scored two, with one assisted by Jorge Baeza. Martin Corral scored both for Delta. Both were assisted by Nathan Downy.

The second half was up and down the field. With less than five minutes to play, Baeza put Montrose ahead 3-2. Then Sean Alex, on assists by Delgado ,scored two late goals to make the final 5-2.

“Early on I was down hanging my head,” Baeza said. “Brian Delgado got me fired up and I scored the goal.”

“We started the second half well and with a lot of momentum, because we knew we had control of the game,” Alex said. “We struggled to finish all game, until Jorge stepped up to the plate and hit an absolute cracker to the top 90 and that sparked the team. We put two more goals in from great assists from Brian and Jorge and that sealed the deal.”

Said Delta coach Paul Shean: “I thought Montrose wanted it more today. Give them credit for finishing the game. They blasted three quality shots past our keeper. The game was a battle but Montrose was the better team today.

“Montrose found a way to finish 80 minutes. When you stop playing after 75 minutes you open the door. They saw a little opening and kicked three balls in.”

  • No. 5 Montrose football begins year with win over Grand Junction Central

    Montrose Grand Junction Central football
    (Paul Hurschmann)

MONTROSE — Montrose, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, opened its year with a win over Grand Junction Central on Friday.

Montrose jumped out to a 21-0 lead, and didn’t look back en route to a 44-20 victory.

“I really liked our effort and attitude throughout the game,” Montrose coach Brett Mertens said. “We need to fix our penalties and obviously can’t turn the ball over.”

    (Paul Hurschmann)

Cole Simmons scored from four and 41 yards out in the first quarter, and then Emmert Kasteneick scored from 53 yards away to make it 21-0.

In the second quarter, Raul Martinez sacked Grand Junction Central quarterback Michael Gohn for a saftey, making it 23-0, before Central’s Joe Carol picked up a fumbled handoff and went 80 yards for the touchdown.

But Montrose wasn’t done. Riley Barnhill scored from five yards out, pushing the lead to 30-7.

The Warriors scored late in the first half on a pass from Gohn to Cole Taylor to make it 30-13 at halftime.

In the third, Trent Blundell went 20 yards to put Montrose up 37-13. Each team scored once more in the fourth, including a 35-yard run from Kastendeick.

“Our o-line dominated tonight all across the board,” Simmons said. “Our running back fakes were phenomenal. Also really impressed with our defense tonight as one whole unit.”

  • Radio: Berthoud vs. Platte Valley highlights Week 1 football matchups

    (Gabriel Christus/Denver Broncos)

After a slate of Week 1 games took place Thursday night, the bulk of football season truly gets underway as competition against all classes will be in full force on Friday.

Several games can be seen on the NFHS Network while others have the opportunity to be seen on television broadcasts.

All around the state, local radio stations will feature select games as teams begin their journey to have turnaround seasons or go hunting for a state championship.

(If any stations are interested in featuring their games in this weekly post, please send an email to dmohrmann@chsaa.org)

    Class 2A

    Berthoud at (2) Platte Valley

    Time: 7 p.m. kick

    Station: 1310 KFKA

On the call: Clark Johnson (play by play) and Bryan Kentfield (color)

Johnson on the matchup: Preps Radio’s Friday Night Game of the Week features first year coach Cory Ticnor and his Berthoud Spartans on the road to Kersey to take on Troy Hoffman’s State runner-up Platte Valley Broncos.

The Broncos opened with a 16-0 shutout against the Spartans last season, but things might be a little tougher for the Broncos this time around as they look to replace dual threat QB Trevon Wehrman and standout RB and LB Ernesto Rios. Look for senior Josh Yancey to step up big for Platte Valley.

The Spartans give the controls to senior QB Sam Baird and will look to get the ball into the dangerous hands of senior Cooper Stratmeyer.

The broadcast kicks off at 7pm Friday Night on 1310 KFKA Preps Radio.

    Salida at Summit

Time: 7:00 pm (Pregame: 6:00 pm)

    Station: The Peak 92.3

On the Call: Caleb Burggraaf (Play by play) Jimmy Doogan (Color)

Burggraaf on the matchup: The Salida Spartans are coming into this season with low numbers on the football team compared to last season, but the hopes are still high with a few returning starters speckling the roster. The Spartans graduated double digit seniors from last years roster, so the big key to watch will be how the young starters react to the Friday night lights experience. Being on the road actually might be a help in this regard to take some nerves away for as many new faces as there will be.

    Class 4A

Grand Junction Central at (5) Montrose

    Time: 7 p.m.

    Station: The Team 1340

The game: Montrose heads into the season as the fifth-ranked team in Class 4A. Coach Brett Mertens lost his leading rusher from a year ago, but senior Emmert Kastendieck appears ready to pick up the load.

Central lost quarterback Max Marsh and he and now former head coach Shawn Marsh moved to Eaglecrest. But the Warriors still have standout tight end — and LSU commit — Kole Taylor who can be a huge difference maker on offense.

    8-Man

    Soroco at South Park

Time: 1:00 pm (Pregame: Noon) on Saturday

    Station: Eagle Country 104

    On the Call: Caleb Burggraaf

Burggraaf on the matchup: Soroco will always be a tough test, but that is exactly what the South Park Burros are hoping for this season with their schedule coming in as one of the toughest in 8-man. This matchup should only help to prep them for games with Front Range Christian, Caliche and Haxtun (all of which are home games for the Burros). South Park will be looking to replace Daigen Springer and TJ Peters as weapons in the offense, but the line is looking very good, and the running game should get some help with new size up front.

Check out the game on Eagle Country 104.

    (Courtesy of Melissa Lords)

MONTROSE — Two-time defending Class 4A boys golf champion is off to a hot start to its 2019 season.

Montrose won the Devils Thumb Tournament in Delta on Aug. 8, finishing 2-under as a team — 13 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Fruita Monument. Jordan Jennings won that event at 7-under, while Micah Stangebye, the reigning 4A individual champion, was second at 5-under.

A day later, Montrose, playing without Stangebye, placed third at the Battlement Mesa Classic hosted by Grand Junction, behind defending 3A champion Aspen and Fruita Monument. Jennings led the team at 3-over.

On Tuesday, the team traveled to the Metro area to play in the Cherry Creek Invitational, and also won that event held at Buffalo Run Golf Course. Montrose finished at 10-under, winning the tournament by 12 strokes. Jennings again won the tournament as an individual, shooting 5-under. Ryan Lords was second at 4-under, and Stangebye finished in a tie for fifth at 1-under.

The win at the Cherry Creek Invite, in particular, put a spark into the team.

“The tournament win was a good momentum moving forward and beating all the top teams in Colorado,” Jennings said. “We are excited to keep going.”

Added Lords: “I have been hitting the ball good all summer. Just happy I finally made some putts. This was a good win in Denver and gives us momentum to achieve are main goal to win state.”

Said Stangebye: “We played great as a team. … Jordan is playing very well right now, but we are really just getting ready for the last at The Bridges.”

Coach Dave Woodruff said it was “just one step towards our at the end of the season.”

Then, on Wednesday, Montrose placed third at the Sun Devil Invitational, hosted by Kent Denver at Saddle Rock Golf Course, behind 5A programs Lakewood and Arapahoe. Lords led the way at 3-over, and a fourth-place finish individually. Stangebye (6-over) was tenth, and Jennings (7-over) was 14th.

“We will learn from tough conditions out there,” Jennings said of the Sun Devil Invite.

Added Stangebye: “Today, I started out with seven straight pars, then found some trouble on 8,9 and 10. I just need to forget today and work on the parts of my game that is struggling and prepare for our next event at Cobble Creek.”

Montrose hosts the Cobble Creek invite on Aug. 22.

  • Boys golf season gets fall sports competitions rolling early

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

By the time the calendar turns to August, athletes and coaches are getting anxious. The anxiousness for the boys golfers ended with the start of fall practice on Monday. Competitions are set to begin on Thursday marking the official start of the 2019-20 athletic season.

The start of the boys golf season is always unique in that it happens a week earlier than every other fall sport. A bunch of factors tend to tie into that reason, but both coaches and players alike don’t mind hitting the range and getting things underway as soon as they can.

    If anything, it seems normal.

“As a kid growing up in Colorado, who played high school golf, I’ve never thought anything about it,” Fossil Ridge coach Andy Stevens said. “It’s always been this way. Boys golf has always been the first sport of the fall season.”

If it’s okay for golf to get going, it begs the question as to why other outdoor focused sports aren’t starting practices and competition on a similar schedule. Why not get cross country, field hockey, boys soccer or football going as well?

It could have to do with the maintenance of the courses among other factors. Getting the kids on the tee boxes early can give them a chance to play some of the top courses while they are in the best shape.

“It’s cool to be able to come out and play in August when the golf courses are in their best shape,” Cheyenne Mountain coach John Carricato said. “The weather is usually pretty good so that’s all what makes it special.”

As far as the weather being ideal, it’s no secret that things can go south for the boys and the girls when it comes to golf and state championships. The girls tournaments were confined to just one day each this spring and two years ago, conditions were far from ideal when the boys tournaments were being played in the fall.

But that’s not the primary reason that the season starts so soon.

“Not after what the girls go through in the spring,” Carricato added.

For the players, the start of golf practice often predates the start of the school year. For the athletes that compete on the golf teams, it’s not orientation or the first day of school when classmates are able to gather and catch up over their summers. They usually do it on the driving range hitting high cuts or baby draws with their mid-irons.

4A boys state golf Micah Strangbye Montrose
    (Kelsey Lowry/CHSAANow.com)

“Today we had tryouts and we’re two weeks outside of actual school starting so it’s kind of weird,” defending Class 4A champion Micah Stangebye said. “It’s weird preparing for a high school sport when school is still several weeks out. I think we even play three events before school starts.”

He added that the big benefit there is competing in tournaments without having to miss class, another plus in the minds of coaches and especially teachers.

Perhaps the final benefit of the timing of boys golf season is the time in which the boys have already been competing over the summer. Three months of sunshine and blue sikes allows the kids to get out and play as many rounds as time allows them.

For those competing on their high school teams, it’s often encouraged that they get out and play the game to some degree.

“Our big push for our players is give them as many competitive playing opportunities as we can wherever that may be,” Stevens said. “It can be at the local level, it can be at the state level with (the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado) or like in years past when we’ve had big-time talents they can play nationally.”

It worked last year for Dillon Stewart. And Stangebye is one of many players who hope it works this year. Stangebye and several other high school players competed on the JGAC Tour this summer and are hoping to ride that momentum into the fall of 2019.

“With me traveling a lot, my game has stayed right where it should be with me playing almost every week,” Stangebye said. “Our whole team has been out here grinding even without starting school.”
