  • After lightning delay, No. 5 Fort Collins boys soccer tops Mountain Range

FORT COLLINS — One weather delay, two goals and three yellow cards later, No. 5 Fort Collins boys soccer shutout Mountain Range in a very physical match on Tuesday evening.

The match ran for about nine minutes before the lightning delay was called. During this short period of time, Fort Collins (7-1 overall, 3-1 league) maintained possession throughout and senior Connor Lowdermilk managed to score a goal with 35 minutes left to play in the first half. The crowd celebrated the first score of the game and kept cheering on the Lambkins until 31:17 remained in the first half, when lightning struck nearby.

Fort Collins headed to its locker room and Mountain Range (5-3, 3-1) headed to its bus, where coach Eric Sarno had a pep talk with them.

“After the delay, they really got into the match and made a great game of it,” Fort Collins coach Justin Stephens said of Mountain Range.

Both teams came back from their break aggressively — much different from the first part of the half where Fort Collins dominated the ball. This time, the ball was going back and forth, being played on both sides of the field.

The Lambkins’ defense played incredibly well, especially goalkeeper Alex Snavely, who did not let a shot past him the entire match.

With 13:26 remaining in the first half, senior forward Blake Moncur scored the Lambkins’ second goal, and the final goal of the game. Fouls grew heavy toward the end of the first half and the play started to get physical.

Aggressive became almost too aggressive by means of physicality during the second half. Three yellow cards were given out — two to Fort Collins and one to Mountain Range. Mountain Range’s Matthew McGuire earned his yellow card after an intense play, resulting a Lambkin down on the field and the crowd going crazy.

Fort Collins seniors Max Bostak and Max Arellano received yellow cards, as well.

The Lambkins and the Mustangs both came very close to scoring goals in the second half, but the Lambkins ran into communication errors and kept overshooting the ball; and the Mustangs just were not able to execute any of their shots because Fort Collins’ defense was so strong.

The coaches from both teams have a clear mutual respect for one another, even after such a tough match.

“That was a good team, they played very well,” Sarno said. “We couldn’t find that goal, and we never gave up.”

Stephens is proud of his team but he has recognized what they did wrong in this game and what they can improve on.

“We were goalless in the second half, so it would be nice get that third and put the game away,” Stephens said.

Fort Collins went into this match coming off its only loss of the season this far against Monarch. Mountain Range will be playing Monarch on Wednesday night on Monarch’s home turf.

The Mustangs will not have a practice between the two matches. Sarno hopes his team will improve their “communication at the back and knowing when to get forward” so that they can play at their fullest on Wednesday.

  • Softball rankings: Valor Christian returns to No. 1 spot in 4A

Powered by a week in which they went 2-0 and outscored their opponents 29-0, the Valor Christian Eagles have returned to the No. 1 spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com softball rankings.

That was the only change at the top of the polls as Legend held strong in 5A and Strasburg remained on top in 3A.

There was a lot of movement in the 5A rankings as Chaparral jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 and Loveland rose from No. 10 to No. 5. Broomfield was the lone newcomer in this week’s poll as they landed at No. 8.

Besides Valor Christian taking over the top spot in 4A, the biggest change of the week was Mountain View jumping from No. 7 to No. 5. There were no new teams to join the 4A rankings this week.

Burlington and Cedaredge jumped into the 3A rankings at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Eaton picked up some ground as they land at No. 3, up two spots from their ranking last week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Complete rankings for each class are below.

  • This 61-yard goal in overtime helped Mountain Range boys soccer upset No. 1 Broomfield

Scoreless in overtime, Mountain Range boys soccer pulled off a stunning upset of top-ranked Broomfield last Thursday when Alex King nailed this 61-yard winner on a free kick:

King’s goal gave Mountain Range the 1-0 win, something that should bolster the Mustangs’ resume come postseason, and handed Broomfield its first loss of the year.

At the time, the Eagles were ranked No. 1 in Class 5A. They have since dropped to No. 6, with Boulder taking over the No. 1 spot this week.

It was King’s first goal this season. The junior plays midfield and defense.

Legend has returned to the top of the CHSAANow.com softball rankings in Class 5A.

Following a 3-2 loss to Loveland, Mountain Range fell out of the top spot in 5A, allowing Legend to move in at No. 1 this week. The win also helped Loveland break into this week’s poll as they come in at No. 10.

Loveland was the only new addition in 5A, but plenty of other moves were made. Ralston Valley jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 on the strength of a 3-0 record from last week. Chaparral also made a significant jump this week going from No. 10 to No. 7.

In 4A, Frederick retained the top spot, and Erie stayed firm at No. 2. Valor Christian comes in at No. 3 and Wheat Ridge at No. 4, with those two teams trading places from last week.

Discovery Canyon (No. 9) and Pueblo Central (No. 10) are the new additions to the 4A poll this week.

Strasburg remains the No. 1 team in 3A after receiving every first-place vote. Brush cracks its way into the rankings at No. 9.

  • Broomfield volleyball continues hot start in league play

BROOMFIELD — Looking to continue their momentum in in league play, the Broomfield Eagles were more than prepared for Mountain Range, downing the Mustangs 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-21) Wednesday night.

Trying to remain undefeated at home the Eagles (5-4 overall, 2-0 5A Front Range League) started off strong in the first set of the match gaining a 10-9 lead and holding on to that lead finishing the set 25-6 against the Mustangs (3-4, 0-1).

“Being at home definitely meant something to us,” outside hitter Mari Boyer said. “Especially playing against Mountain Range, since we have struggled with them in the past we wanted to come out swinging.”

The senior believes that her team needs to work on consistency along with playing as a team all the time and if they get that down they could go far.

The Eagles quickly jumped ahead with a quick 14-5 lead in the second set, and again were able to maintain the lead throughout the set only this time with sophomore Nicole Gonzales leading the team with defensive stops that helped their momentum carry on to widen the gap to 22-9 before getting the 25-10 win.

Though only a sophomore, Gonzales’ confidence not only shows on the court but off as well. Some might that being an underclassmen puts her at a disadvantage to be able to step up as a leader, but she sees things differently.

“I don’t believe that my age has anything to do with me being able to step up and take on a big role for the team,” she said.

On the other end, Brooke Buchan — the senior captain of the Mustangs — wasn’t going to let her team go down without a fight. Making several strike plays and talking to her team they started off the third set looking brand new, taking their first lead since early on in the first set against the Eagles.

The Mustangs kept the spark going holding on to the lead at 16-15, determined to fight to the very end. The game came to a thrilling end after over seven lead changes in the last set alone. In order to move forward and have a successful season Mountain Range coach Melissa Sayre believes it will be on the underclassmen.

“We have a really young team,” she said. “And so the work for us is to get them incorporated and use to the system playing with other players that they’ve never played with or against before.”

Buchan walked away from Wednesday’s match knowing that her team has the ability to put wins, they just need the effort to match the desire.

“The team needs to start playing harder earlier on but I believe that we can do it,” she said.

After coming out so strong in the first two sets and capturing an early lead and being able to maintain them, the Eagles didn’t look like they had the same intensity in the final set as they had shown in the first two.

Boyer believes that it was because the team underestimated the Mustangs. But they were able to battle back in the final set, getting some much needed production from the younger members of the team.

“The underclassmen really stepped up big and we couldn’t have won the game without them,” Broomfield coach Jeff Larson said. “We still are a young team and learning how to mesh together with new starters, we won’t focus on this win too much. We have another game tomorrow on the road against another good team.”

The Eagles hit the road Thursday as they travel north to take on Rocky Mountain. Mountain Range heads back home for a match against Greeley West. That match is also scheduled for Thursday.
