  • Poudre’s Ky Ecton topples familiar foe at 5A girls tennis state tournament

DENVER — Split sets, against her good friend. It was a familiar moment for Poudre’s Ky Ecton.

Ecton, a sophomore who plays No. 1 singles, was certainly accustomed with her opponent in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A girls tennis state tournament on Thursday: Mountain Range senior Kristen Kirby.

The two had played twice this season, including in the Front Range League tournament, and also met in the state tournament last season. Each match went three sets — and Kirby had won each time.

So when Thursday’s match went to a third set, Ecton sighed to herself, and thought, “Of course.”

“We’re actually really, really good friends, so I just love playing her every time,” Ecton said. “She’s just a great sport about everything.”

“I was kind of expecting it to go to a third set,” Ecton added. “To be honest, we’re very similar in how we play, so I felt like if it wasn’t going to go to a third set, someone was going to have an off day.”

Ultimately, Ecton pulled off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win to advance to Friday’s semifinals.

“Going into it, I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Ecton said. “I figured win or lose, it was going to be a fun match, anyway — and it was. It was just a super fun match to play in.”

Ecton will face Cherry Creek’s Gloria Son on Friday. Son, a senior who won the No. 3 singles title last season, beat both of her opponents in straight sets to advance.

It will be another familiar opponent for Ecton, even if the two have never played.

“She’s my big sister’s old doubles partner, so she’s a friend, too,” Ecton said. “I haven’t played her because she’s a senior. … It’ll be really fun to see what happens.”

Ecton lost in the playback semifinals last season, and says she took a lot away from that experience.

“I learned that you’ve got to live in the moment, because you never know if you’re going to make it back all four years,” she said. “So you’ve just got to live in the moment and have fun, and be with your team while you can.”

The No. 1 singles bracket is pretty open, as both defending champion Amber Shen of Fairview, a sophomore, and Cherry Creek senior Kalyssa Hall, who finished runner-up, opted to not play this season.

In terms of the team race, Fairview jumped out after the first day with 19 overall points. The Knights qualified all seven positions for the tournament, and each one advanced to the quarterfinals. Of those, six remain alive in the semifinals.

Cherry Creek, the 19-time defending champion and winner of 20 of the past 21 titles in 5A, sits in second place with 18 points. The Bruins have six positions in the semifinals, as well.

Mountain Vista is also in the title hunt with 14 points after the first day. The Golden Eagles have four positions in semifinals.

Fossil Ridge (nine points), Poudre (eight), and Heritage (seven) also scored highly as a team on the first day.

DENVER — For the first time in nearly two decades, there might be a new champion in Class 5A girls tennis.

    Emphasis on might.

Fairview and 19-time defending champion Cherry Creek are locked in a battle for the team title at the 5A state championships. Fairview holds a slim 58-56 lead in team points following the second day of competition on Friday.

It is a major development in the world of girls tennis. On top of the 19 consecutive titles, Cherry Creek has won 20 of the past 21 championships. And more often than not, those championships have come in a runaway fashion: The Bruins have bested the second-place finisher by an average of 27.6 points during their streak.

The streak is to a point where, from outsiders looking in, championships are simply expected from Cherry Creek girls tennis.

“We try to really make it about these 11 girls this year. It’s not about the steak,” said Cherry Creek coach Chris Jacob. “But they know about it. They’re smart and they research stuff. … Everybody talks about it at school. They hear about it constantly, so there’s tremendous pressure that goes along with that.

“But they handle it well. I can’t imagine handling myself like that at 17; it’s lovely to see.”

The Knights, on the other hand, have been runner-up four times — 2015, 2012, 2011 and 2010 — in recent seasons.

“We don’t talk about winning,” Fairview coach Susan Stensrud said. “I believe we have the opportunity, the chance, the potential to win it all. But on a day-to-day basis, I don’t talk about winning. I talk about the girls playing their best match, playing their best game, maximizing their potential, and how they can support their teammates.”

Still, Stensrud later, “(The girls) are excited, but they’re very focused on the fact that all of us have a part in it. They’re all trying to think of what their part is.”

Fairview’s current position is made more impressive considering that only four players returned from last season’s varsity team, including the loss of defending No. 1 singles champion Amber Shen, who opted not to play this season as a sophomore.

Seraphin Castelino, a freshman, stepped into the No. 1 singles spot for the Knights, and will play in the final on Saturday. Castelino beat Mountain Vista’s Casey Zhong in three sets (6-7, 6-1, 6-1) to advance. She is the younger sister of former 5A boys No. 1 singles champion Ignatius Castelino.

Castelino will face Poudre’s Ky Ecton in the final. Ecton outlasted Cherry Creek’s Gloria Son in three sets.

“Amber was focused on her studies this year, and Seraphin just stepped right in,” Stensrud said. “For her to — two freshmen, she and Sophie (Pearson) — to drop in our lap this year has been quite a coup this year.”

Pearson will be in a crucial matchup on Saturday, in the No. 3 singles final against Cherry Creek freshman Sayuri Garud. It is one of two remaining head-to-head matchup between the two teams, the other coming in the third-place match at No. 4 doubles.

The Knights also have Clare Lupo and Denali Pinto playing for a title at No. 4 doubles.

Cherry Creek, meanwhile, underwent a rebuild of its own. The Bruins lost three top players to transfers at the January semester break, and returned just five varsity players.

    But the transition?

“Not a problem, really,” Jacob said. “It allowed other girls to step up and move into these spots that they’ve worked for.”

The Bruins really gelled during a trip to Chattanooga, Tenn., for a national tournament in March, Jacob said.

And so, “For as tough as that sounds, it was a real smooth transition for us,” Jacob said. “The girls responded, and they get along really well, and they’re supporting each other. We’re in a good spot.”

In addition to Garud, the Bruins have sophomore Micha Handler playing for the No. 2 singles championship, and the duo of Allison Murphy and Emily Wilkens in the No. 2 doubles title match.

Counting playbacks — each team has three positions in third-place matches — both Fairview and Cherry Creek have 15 potential points remaining.

“Some people ask me, ‘Do you want to know what the (team) points are?’” Stensrud said. “And I don’t want to know. I just to know at the end. … It stresses me out too much.”

Mountain Vista is currently in third place with 37 points, ahead of Poudre (29 points). Poudre has two finalists: Ecton and No. 2 singles finalist Alessia Fabiano, who is an exchange student from Italy.

Heritage is in fifth place with 19 points, while Fossil Ridge, Denver East and Ponderosa sit in a tie for sixth at 15 points.

The finals all begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Gates Tennis Center. Admission is free.

Tuesday night, eight teams played their way into Friday’s state quarterfinals. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

    (2) Horizon 40, (3) Pine Creek 37

Pine Creek took a seven-point lead into halftime and seemed to be on the verge of upsetting the Hawks. But it wasn’t meant to be as Horizon battled back and edged the Eagles 40-37, ending Pine Creek’s season in the Sweet 16.

    (3) Cherry Creek 39, (2) Poudre 33

In a defense battle, the Bruins held the lead nearly from wire-to-wire as they knocked off the Impalas 39-33.

Poudre did cut the lead to two points with just over four minutes remaining, but weren’t able to gain the lead. A team that began the year unranked, the Impalas impressed early with some high-profile wins.

The Bruins will have their hands full as they’ll take on Grandview.

A photo gallery from the game is available here.

    (2) Ralston Valley 56, (3) Doherty 31

The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 13-point lead at halftime and stayed in cruise control the rest of the way as they topped the Spartans 56-31.

The win puts Ralston Valley back into the Great 8 where they fell to ThunderRidge last year.

    (1) Lakewood 65, (4) Rampart 51

Nebraska commit Nicea Eliely scored 31 points for Rampart, but it wasn’t enough as the Rams fell to the Tigers 65-51.

Lakewood returns to the Great 8 where last year they lost to eventual state champion Broomfield.

    (2) ThunderRidge 51, (6) Arapahoe 37

The Grizzlies advanced to the Great 8 once again with a 51-37 win over Arapahoe. ThunderRidge is looking to get back to the Coors Events Center at CU where last year they fell to Broomfield in the state championship game.

They are set to face Lakewood at the Denver Coliseum on Friday.

    (1) Highlands Ranch 70, (5) Dakota Ridge 41

It was an explosive second quarter for the Falcons as they went on a 12-0 run to pull away from the Eagles.

Highlands Ranch came away with the 70-41 win and will face Horizon at the Denver Coliseum Friday.

    (1) Grandview 81, (5) Fairview 31

Grandview held a slim four-point lead after the first quarter, but then completely took over. The Wolves went on a 60-14 run through the final three quarters of the game to top the Knights 81-31 and secure a spot in the Great 8.

Grandview has now advanced farther than they did in last year’s tournament when they fell 86-83 to Lakewood.

  • Pomona wrestling overcomes adversity to claim second 5A trophy in four years

DENVER – Pomona came into the Class 5A state wrestling tournament expecting to come away with the team trophy, and the Panthers did exactly that.

How the team secured its first championship since 2013 may have been unconventional, but sometimes a little adversity isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Pomona finished the three-day tournament with 139.5 points, a state champion and eight placers. Along the way the team lost one qualifier to a skin issue before the tournament even began, and saw both of its defending state champions lose in the quarterfinals.

Instead of folding, the squad regrouped and pulled away from second-place Poudre (106.5 points), Ponderosa (95.5) and Pine Creek (95) on Saturday night at Pepsi Center.

“We overcame adversity right here. We lost one kid to ringworm before the tournament even started,” said Panthers coach Sam Federico, whose team finished second to Arvada West in each of the previous two seasons. “We battled the whole weekend and got it done.”

    Theorius Robison Pomona state wrestling
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Freshman Theorius Robison captured the lone state title for Pomona at 126 pounds with a 9-5 decision over Cherry Creek’s Josh Finesilver.

“The start of the season was a little bit rough. It was an adjustment from eight-grade to high school,” Robison said. “But I expected to win, because I don’t really ever expect to lose.”

Robison spent the final 20 seconds of the match moving away from Finesilver, which drew a pair of stalling penalties and also caused Pomona to have a point deducted from its team score because of unsportsmanlike conduct. The team was hit with a second deduction later in the tournament for a separate infraction.

“He’s a freshman that’s excited and he dominated a match,” Federico said. “I wish it wouldn’t have ended like that, of course. But he’s a freshman, he’s excited, and there’s nothing wrong with that, either.”

Jason Romero (145 pounds) and Cameron Gonzales (170) finished second for the team.

Poudre’s charge to second place was led by sophomore Jacob Greenwood, who captured his second state title with a 15-4 major decision over Monarch Cole Polluconi.

“I’ve been working all year for this,” Greenwood said. “Everything’s paying off right now.”

Greenwood defeated Legacy’s Ryan Deakin in overtime as a freshman. He did so while dealing with a slight fracture in the L-5 vertebrae in his back, an injury which kept him sidelined until November.

He said the pressure was much more evident this season than a year ago.

“I think last year was easier, as far as the mental game goes,” Greenwood said. “Nobody expected me to win and I was the underdog by quite a bit.

“This year the mental piece was a little harder at points because I knew everybody was expecting me to win again.”

Deakin bounced back Saturday night to win his second championship in three years, shutting out Denver East’s David Kavanagh 7-0 at 138 pounds.

Another sophomore who came up big Saturday was Grand Junction’s Josiah Rider, who lost nearly three minutes of stoppage time to a bloody nose. Rider ultimately held on for a 5-3 victory at 152 pounds over former state champion Matt Finesilver of Cherry Creek.

“He’s very determined, very focused and he’s a very seasoned wrestler,” Grand Junction coach Cole Allison said. “It takes a lot to rattle Josiah Rider, so he knew if we could get the blood stopped and not let the time become an issue, he’d find a way to get the match.

“He wanted a pin, he wanted a tech, but there are no style points in the finals. Just find a way to get it done however it comes, and that’s what he did.”

Castle View’s Malik Heinselman won his first title with a second-period pin at 106 pounds and Adams City’s Fabian Gutierrez followed with his own pin at 113 pounds.

Pine Creek’s Jordan Martinez edged Ponderosa’s Hunter Matney 3-1 at 120. Lakewood’s Gabriel Dinette also landed his first crown with a 2-1 victory over Pomona’s Romero via ultimate tiebreaker in overtime.

Other winners included Pine Creek’s Peter Isais with a 3-1 OT decision at 160; Chaparral’s Dawson Kranmer by a 3-1 decision at 170; Pine Creek’s Garrett Neil via a 6-5 decision at 182; and Mountain Vista’s Trenton Schultz by an 8-3 decision at 195.

Ponderosa freshman Cohl Schultz scored a first-period pinfall with one second left to secure his first title at 220. Fruita Monument’s Clayton Voytilla scored a 3-1 decision at heavyweight.

DENVER — Meeker’s TJ Shelton opened his quest for a fourth title with a pin of Wiggins’ Dillon Donaghy in 49 seconds in the first round of Thursday’s Class 2A state wrestling tournament.

Shelton, who wrestles at 170 pounds, will face Edgar Pedigo of Custer County in Friday’s quarterfinals. Pedigo pinned Rhett Uhland of Eads in 4:22.

Shelton won 2A’s 170-point title as a freshman, 160 pounds as a sophomore, and 170 again as a junior last season.

He is aiming to become the state’s 19th four-time champion.

Last season, Paonia’s Jesse Reed won a fourth championship, and Broomfield’s Phil Downing did the same in 2014. Only once before has the state has had a four-time champion in three-consecutive tournaments. The came in 2003-05, when a total of five wrestlers accomplished the feat.

Grant Willits has a lot to prove this year.

The junior from Pueblo County came into the 2015 state wrestling tournament with his eyes on taking his second state championship. But when weigh-ins took place, Willits missed his cut by a tenth of a pound and was disqualified.

Thursday he made a triumphant return to the floor at Pepsi Center and pinned Littleton’s Poe Di in the 4A 126-pound bracket.

“It feels nice,” Willits said. “I definitely feel like I have a chip on my shoulder. This whole summer I just thought about it all the time and worked harder and harder to make up for what happened last year and try to chase a title this year.”

Willits will face Riley Prough from Glenwood Springs in Friday’s quarterfinals.

    Returning champions, unbeatens roll on

    • In addition to Shelton, each of the other returning champions in every class advanced to the quarterfinals during the first session at the Pepsi Center. There are a total of 26 — six each in class 2A and 3A, nine in 4A, and five in 5A.
    • Included in that group are two juniors who have each won championships in their first two seasons: John Mall’s Jonathan Andreatta (2A 120), and Pueblo County’s Hunter Willits (4A 152).
    • Likewise, all wrestlers who entered the day unbeaten stayed that way. There are five undefeated wrestlers in both 2A and 4A, and three in 3A. The 5A tournament does not have an unbeaten in its field.

    Quick pins, total pins

    • 40 wrestlers finished with pins in less than a minute during the first round on Thursday. Of those, 12 came in less than 30 seconds.
    • The quickest pin of the day belonged to Sergio Campos of Hotchkiss, who took down Calhan’s Matthew Heitmann in 15 seconds at 2A 106. The record for the quickest pin is four seconds.
    • In the first round of each of the four tournaments, there were a total of 213 pins. By class, 2A had the most first-round pins with 68, 4A had 52, 3A had 51, and 5A had 42

    Team races

    • In 2A, defending champion Rocky Ford leads the field at Round 1 with 30.5 points. Meeker, runner-up a year ago, was second with 28. Centauri is third with 25.
    • The 3A race is also being led by a defending champion in Valley, which sits at 30 points after the first round. Berthoud is currently in second (24 points), and Dolores Huerta is third (22).
    • Pueblo County jumped out ahead in the 4A team race, and leads with 34.5 points. The Hornets were runner-up last season. Greeley Central is second with 29.5, Cheyenne Mountain is third with 25, and defending champion Thompson Valley sits fourth with 19.5.
    • Pomona heads the 5A race with 27 points. Legacy and Pine Creek sit in a tie for second with 21 points, Ponderosa is fourth with 16.5, and Poudre is fifth with 15.5.

    Friday’s schedule

    • The 2A/3A championship quarterfinals will begin at 10 a.m. at the Pepsi Center, with first-round consolations immediately following.
