Three new No. 1 teams were crowned this week in the CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.
Silver Creek now stands atop the Class 4A poll, Paonia takes over as the top 2A team and Holly comes at No. 1 in the 1A rankings.
With new teams breaking into every poll this week, the rankings have a much different look to them than they did when the last new set was released two weeks ago.
Silver Creek made the most impressive jump out of any other team, regardless of classification. Two weeks ago, the Raptors held the No. 7 position in 4A and after rattling off three wins in Arizona, the voters saw enough to boost their position.
Canon City, Pueblo East and Valor Christian also had solid outings since spring break and played their way in the rankings. Canon City lands at No. 3, Pueblo East comes in at No. 4 and Valor Christian takes over the No. 7 spot that Silver Creek held in the previous rankings.
Regis Jesuit remains No. 1 in the 5A poll this week. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
Regis Jesuit remains the top team in 5A.
Ralston Valley gained ground in this week’s poll, jumping from No. 9 to No. 6.
Douglas County, ThunderRidge and Heritage join the 5A rankings at No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.
Eaton may still be the top team in 3A, but it’s No. 2 Bayfield who suddenly getting attention from voters. The Wolverines completed a successful road trip to Colorado Springs where they held on to beat St. Mary’s before holding off Lamar and Manitou Springs in a double-header.
Kent Denver was the lone addition to the 3A poll at No. 9.
Paonia’s 8-0 start to the season was good enough for the Eagles to jump three spots and take over the No. 1 spot in 2A. They swept former No. 1 Resurrection Christian in a double-header on Saturday.
The Cougars fell to No. 5 as a result.
Rocky Ford (No. 6) and Limon (No. 10) joined the 2A rankings this week.
Holly made the two-spot jump after a 2-1 start to their season to become the new No. 1 team in 1A.
Granada, who was ranked No. 7 in the previous rankings, also made a significant jump this week as the Bobcats come in at No. 2.
Rocky Mountain Lutheran and Briggsdale are the two new teams to the 1A rankings, coming in at No. 7 and No. 8 respectively.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

It’s still early in the 2016 baseball season, but there has already been some shakeup in the Class 1A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.
Eads takes over the top spot in the state after a 1-0 start to their season. Former No. 1 Dove Creek, who has stumbled out of the gate fell to No. 2.
Cotopaxi and Manzanola played their way into the still young rankings, coming in at No. 6 and No. 9 respectively.
Nothing has changed at the top of the 5A rankings as Regis Jesuit and Cherry Creek remain the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in those rankings.
Ralston Valley joined the 5A baseball poll at No. 8 this week. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
Columbine is one of two newcomers in the poll as they land at No. 8 with Ralston Valley, the other newcomer, joining at No. 9.
The top of the 4A rankings has the same story as the 5A poll. D’Evelyn and Lewis-Palmer remain the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the class, with both teams undefeated on the year.
Though, the 4A rankings did see more turnover this week than any other class as Silver Creek (No. 7), Denver North (No. 8) and Air Academy (No. 9) all broke their way into this week’s poll.
And it was 3A who saw the least turnover of the week. Eaton still holds the No. 1 spot, but nine of last week’s 10 ranked teams all stayed in the poll this week, although a few did jump up or down in ranking.
Buena Vista is the lone newcomer in the poll, coming in at No. 10.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

PUEBLO — This game needed a hero and Jesus Loya delivered.
The senior made a free throw with 16.8 seconds left to vault Holyoke to a 61-60 overtime decision over Ignacio in a Class 2A quarterfinal game at Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Massari Arena.
“I’m just super proud of the way they competed all night,” Holyoke coach Scott Dille said. “They just stuck together through thick and then. We didn’t start real well, but I guess it didn’t matter.”
Holyoke improved to 22-3 and advances to play Sanford, the same the two-time defending state champs. The Bobcats dropped to 21-3.
Holyoke trailed 17-2 late in the first quarter, and then late in the fourth the Dragons were also struggling.
Ignacio went to spread offense to run the clock and it worked as the Bobcats took a 51-43 lead with 2:47 left in the fourth quarter after Kruz Pardo’s free throw.
Holyoke came charging back and Gunnar Kroeger made a trey the Dragons were only down 52-48 with 1:34 left. Pardo drained two free throws with 65 seconds remaining to put the Bobcats up 54-50, but Holyoke’s Alex Strauss answered with a 3-point play and then Kroeger made a long-distance trey with 31 seconds showing to tie the game at 54-54.
In overtime, the game remained tied at 56-56 at the 3:11 mark. Igancio’s Nicholas Herrera’s inside bucket gave the Bobcats a 58-56 lead, but Holyoke answered to tie the game at 58-58 with 1:52 left. The deadlock remained at 60-60, until Holyoke’s Loya went to the free throw line with 16.8 ticks left.
Loya missed his first attempt, but made his second giving the Dragons the 61-60 lead. On the ensuing possession, Ignacio’s Wyatt Hayes drove to the hoop, but was called for a charge at the 5.9-second mark.
Hoyoke’s Alex Strauss was fouled immediately, but missed the front end of his one-on-one attempt.
Loya came to the rescue again, stealing the ball and the time ran out giving the Dragons the improbable win.
“I was glad my guys had the confidence to take shots at the end of the game and make them,” Dille said.
In the third quarter, the Bobcats stretched their lead when Anthony Manzanares scored five consecutive points, giving his team a 45-32 at the end of the third quarter.
Holyoke’s Jesus Loya drained a trey and Austin Herman put in a follow shot and Loya added an inside bucket to get the Dragons within 49-41 with 5:05 left in the fourth.
(2) Resurrection Christian 69, (7) Rye 52
The mission is simple.
Resurrection Christian’s boys basketball team wants to win a Class 2A state title.
The Cougars took one step toward reaching that goal by ousting Rye 69-52 in a Class 2A quarterfinal game at Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Massari Arena.
“I thought we played excellent the first half,” said Resurrection coach Bruce Dick, who team lead 40-21 at half. “We gave up a few transition points to them, but we didn’t turn the ball over. That was a key to a great start. We got a little sloppy the fourth quarter. We tried doing things in one pass instead of working some offense and it kind of bit us a little bit, but we answered the call. I thought we played hard.”
The Cougars, who were a Class 2A runner-up to Sanford a year ago, ran their record to 24-0. The Cougars will face Sedgwick County (23-1) at 5:30 p.m. today in the semifinals. Rye dropped to 21-4.
“We have not played Sedgwick County and they are a good fast team,” Dick said. “They like to get up and down the floor. We’ve talked about getting back to the state title game for 12 months now and we want to learn (from last year) and hopefully we will get another opportunity this year.”
Tanner Ervin scored 29 points, including five 3-pointers, and Luke Fick added 17 as the Cougars sped past the T-Bolts.
Rye’s Connor Hale tried to keep the Thunderbolts in the game as he had 30 points – 17 in the fourth quarter. He converted an old-fashion 3-point play with 2:14 left to get Rye within 61-51, but the Thunderbolts could get no closer.
(1) Sanford 82, (8) Ellicott 62
The two-time defending state champion Indians survived an early scare and regrouped to capture the 20-point victory.
Sanford improved to 25-0 on the season and dating back to the middle of the 2013-2014 season the Indians have won 71 games in a row. Ellicott fell to 18-5 on the season.
Miles Caldon fueled Sanford with 25 points, and made 8-of-11 free throws. Caldon wasn’t the only player providing offensive power as Chamce Canty (15), Griffin Peterson (11) and Austin Chavez (10) all scored in double-figures.
Top-seeded Sanford looked anything but in the first quarter as the Indians were trailing 11-1 in the early going.
That wasn’t a sign of things to come. The Indians stayed calm and found a way to win.
“I thought our kids played well,” veteran Sanford coach Rhett Larsen said. “That team came out and hit some shot and they were hot. I don’t think we were flat really, I just think they were sharp. I was real proud of our guys how they have fought back. I think our experience helped and we kept our composure pretty well.”
Sanford rallied and took a 34-28 lead at half and stretched things out to a 53-38 advantage with eight minutes to play. Morgan Murray had a game-high 27 points in Ellicott’s loss, including five three-pointers.
(3) Sedgwick County 72, (6) Paonia 59
Tyler Woodhams poured in 35 points leading the Cougars to a 72-59 win over the Eagles.
The Cougars (23-1) held a five-point lead at intermission and then pulled away for good in the second half, as Woodhams scored 18 of his points in the final 16 minutes.
Dagan Rienks had 28 in Paonia’s loss. The Eagles drop into the consolation bracket with a 23-2 record.
“I thought our team defense was good at times and Tyler did step up and we have some other kids who need to step up, especially on the offensive end,” said Sedgwick coach Stacy Woodhams, Tyler’s father. “It is always tough to get the first win and we got it. It was kind of ugly, but it is a win.”
The younger Woodhams made two treys and was 15-of-18 from the free throw line.
Lewis-Palmer senior Paul Tillotson wants to help the Rangers win a state baseball championship before he heads to Nebraska. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
MONUMENT — It’s now or never for Lewis-Palmer senior Paul Tillotson.
The senior has been a staple to the Rangers’ baseball program for three seasons and entering his fourth and final year, he’s hoping that his experience and leadership can help him get his hands on that state championship trophy, even if the makeup of the team doesn’t have the same feel.
“It’s a little bit different,” Tillotson said. “We lost some guys from last year, we got a new coach but we’re looking on the up-and-up right now.”
Having Tillotson on the roster gives the team instant credibility. They came in as the No. 2 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com preseason baseball rankings. That’s the kind of reputation a team has when they have a University of Nebraska commit on its roster.
That’s right. Like several other Colorado athletes, Tillotson is bound for Lincoln. That is assuming that the lure of Major League Baseball doesn’t rear its head in June.
Paul Tillotson. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
But for now, Tillotson’s only focus is on helping the Rangers become a better baseball team and continuing the string of success it has seen in recent seasons.
First-year coach Brett Lester is fortunate enough to join a squad that rosters one of the best players in the state.
“It’s a luxury that not many coaches get the chance to enjoy,” Lester said. “He’s going to be competitive every time out and he’s going to do well on the mound, even at the plate in the games that he’s not pitching, he’s going to have a huge output.”
In 2015, Tillotson was such a devastating weapon for the Rangers. From the offensive side, he batted .446 with six home runs and 32 RBIs. In 95 plate appearances, he struck out only six times.
On the mound, he went 8-1 with a 1.62 ERA. He struck out 145 hitters and walked only 22.
So which skill set are the Huskers hoping to utilize?
“I’m definitely going as a pitcher, but they wanted to know if I still want to hit,” Tillotson said. “They hinting on the subject that I’m going to hit more (than they thought I would).”
And he’s up for it.
He remains in constant communication with the Huskers and they continue to track each other’s progress.
And while it’s easy to track numbers on a boxscore, the one thing that Tillotson is working harder at this year is helping out the younger players. He and teammate Billy Cook are doing everything they can to develop young players and ensure that Lewis-Palmer will be a winning program well beyond this year.
“As returning veterans it’s kind of on us to help those young guys out,” Tillotson said. “Just the little things that go into winning games through the season. It’s our job to help kids out when we see things they need help on.”
And in the process, they’ll be helping themselves out as well. At the end of last season Tillotson and the Rangers were on hand as the state championship trophy was handed to Green Mountain. That feeling, regardless of the changes the team has gone through, made him hungry and determined to bring a state championship back to Lewis-Palmer.
The Rangers have never won a baseball crown.
“I definitely have the hunger,” he said. “I want to push myself and my team to prove that we deserve that No. 2 ranking. I’m always going to be pushing my team to make sure that we’re doing the best that we can.”
Losing five of their first six games of the year saw the Patriots slip out of the polls as they appeared destined for a more mediocre season than most thought.
Then league play began and things got much better much faster.
George Washington is undefeated in a tough Denver Prep League which has gotten the attention of the voters.
Rangeview remains the top team in the 5A poll and ThunderRidge made an impressive jump this week, landing at No. 4. That’s three spots better than last week and a win over No. 3 Regis Jesuit probably had a lot to do with it.
Lewis-Palmer hangs on to the top spot in the 4A poll this week. The Rangers have rattled off 19 straight wins and with two games remaining have already wrapped up a share of the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference regular season title.
No new teams broke into the 4A rankings this week.
DSST-Stapleton remains the No. 1 team in 3A with Faith Christian right on its heels. The Eagles are the only blemish on the Knights’ 18-1 record.
At No. 10, Grand Valley cracks its way back into the 3A top 10 this week.
Sanford is still the No. 1 team in the 2A poll, holding off Resurrection Christian and Sedgwick County, the other two undefeated teams in the class.
Crowley County is the lone newcomer in 2A, coming in at No. 10.
Defending 1A champion Holly maintains their spot as the No. 1 team this week. Cheyenne Wells is a new face to the 1A poll as they land at No. 10.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

The Pueblo South Colts are putting together a nice season. They carry their momentum into this week as they take over the No. 1 spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.
Their week was highlighted with a 79-51 win over Pueblo Central on Tuesday. The Colts looked absolutely dominant and are legitimate 4A title contenders.
Former No. 1 Longmont fell to No. 3 after losing to the FNE Warriors on Saturday.
The 4A poll saw two newcomers this week as Holy Family and Rifle come in at No. 8 and No. 10 respectively.
There were very few changes in the 5A poll. Rangeview proved to be the real deal after taking a hold of the No.1 ranking last week. They topped Regis Jesuit 60-52 to prove that they are indeed worthy of the state’s top spot.
The Raiders fell one spot to No. 4 as a result of the loss.
Colorado Springs Christian School hangs on to the top overall spot in the 3A rankings as they prepare for a big Tri-Peaks League showdown with St. Mary’s on Friday. The Pirates handed the Lions their only loss last season and the Lions will be out to even the score.
Faith Christian jumped three spots to No. 6 this week and the 3A poll saw one newcomer as the Manitou Springs Mustangs come in at No. 10.
Sanford is still the No. 1 team in 2A this week after cruising to a 63-35 win over Centauri. The top five seeds from last week all maintained their position.
The bottom five spots saw some shuffling, but overall the 10 ranked teams from last week remained in this week’s poll.
Fleming takes over the top spot in the 1A after defending champion Holly and Wiley handed South Baca its first two losses of the year.
Kit Carson jumps from No. 4 to No. 2 and Holly jumped from No. 6 to No. 3.
No new teams played their way into the 1A rankings this week.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

The 2015 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and then a vote of coaches.

Once again, there were minimal changes to the top of the CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.
Overland, Longmont, Colorado Springs Christian School, Sanford and Fleming all maintain their positions as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes. And while new teams made their way into this week’s set of polls, it appears that taking down the top teams in every class is going to be a formidable challenge.
The Class 5A poll might’ve had the most interesting turnaround since last week. Cherokee Trail certainly got the attention of a lot of teams with their 85-81 win over Denver East. The win helped the Cougars jump from No. 10 to No. 6.
Eaglecrest and Regis Jesuit each climbed two spots and remain undefeated on the young season.
On the strength of a 4-1 start, Chatfield joins the 5A rankings, coming in at No. 10 this week.
In 4A, the top seven teams remain the same from last week, with only Pueblo West and Sand Creek changing positions. The two teams swapped spots, putting the Cyclones at No. 5 and the Scorpions at No. 6.
The largest set of newcomers to any poll took place with the 4A rankings as Vista Ridge, Thomas Jefferson and Conifer come in this week and occupy the last three spots of the top 10.
Very few changes took place in the 3A poll as there were no newcomers. Lutheran and DSST-Stapleton each jumped two spots with Lutheran landing at No. 5 and DSST-Stapleton coming in at No. 7.
Dayspring Christian jumps into the 2A poll this week at No. 10. They are the lone newcomer.
After going 3-0 last week, Meeker made a significant jump in the poll, going from No. 8 to No. 5 as they look to set themselves up as a contender. Paonia also jumped three spots from No. 9 to land at No. 6 this week.
The top nine teams of the 1A poll went unchanged, although Arickaree/Woodlin did move from No. 7 to No. 5. Norwood cracked the top 10 this week, taking the No. 10 spot.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
