  • Peetz grinds out 6-man football title win over Stratton/Liberty

JOES — It was gut check time for Peetz. Down 28-24 with five minutes left in the game, Peetz lined up for a game-tying field goal.

The Bulldogs sent a man in motion to the outside, the holder took the snap, dropped back, and threw it up to Logan Sircy for a touchdown to win the 6-man football championship.

“Well we’ve worked on it,” Peetz coach Scott Sorensen said. “We used that motion man to get us a one-on-one matchup. We felt comfortable with it, we ran it in practice all week. It was great to see it work.”

Sircy had three touchdowns, none bigger than the one that distanced Peetz for good in a 38-28 win.

“It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,” Sircy said. “It’s crazy, we worked our butts off all year just to get to this point. We had some guys come out that had never played high school football before. It was a team effort, from the bottom to the top.”

The Bulldogs outscored Stratton/Liberty 24-8 in the final quarter.

“It shows our grit,” Sircy said. “We’ve been down before. We were down to Fleming in the first half by a couple touchdowns. We feel that we overcome adversity.”

Stratton/Liberty came out with a tough defensive effort. The Knighted Eagles forced Peetz to punt on each of it’s first five drives.

Eltan Yarger put Stratton/Liberty up 6-0 with 6:49 in the 1st quarter, then Phillip Pickard followed with a 38-yd touchdown run to give the Knighted Eagles a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

“We just needed to get out of that first quarter,” Sorensen said. “To only be down two touchdowns after that first quarter, that was great. They were bringing it.”

Peetz forced two turnovers with Stratton/Liberty inside the five-yard-line — an interception in the endzone and a fumble recovery at the two — but was unable to turn the opportunities into points.

A turnover on downs finally gave Peetz good starting field position, and they took advantage of it. The Bulldogs cut the Stratton/Liberty lead to 14-6 with about two minutes before halftime after a crucial fourth down conversion in the red zone.

“The kids were used to it,” Sorensen said. “They’ve had tight games. The loss, I think helped us bounce back and know that we’re not invincible.”

With Peetz driving, Stratton/Liberty stopped the Bulldog offense on fourth down and two, then took it down the field to extend the lead. Yarger’s second touchdown of the day put the Knighted Eagles up 20-6.

Sircy kept Peetz in the game with two touchdowns. His second, with 1:38 in the third quarter, made it a one-possession game with Stratton/Liberty holding just a six-point lead.

“Do whatever I can to help my team,” Sircy said. “Do whatever I can to get us that much closer.”

On the ensuing drive, Sircy intercepted the pass to set up Peetz with a shot at taking its first lead of the game. Peetz went three-and-0ut, but the punt was downed at the Stratton/Liberty one-yard line.

Peetz shot up the middle on defense and forced a safety on the first play of the fourth quarter.

“That was the turning point,” Sorensen said. “You felt the whole momentum shift. It was big. First of all, the punt to  get it down there, that was great. What a punt. Nice little sequence of plays there.”

Hunter White spun into the endzone to cap the ensuing drive and give Peetz its first lead of the game. The extra point hit off the upright and bounced in to put the Bulldogs up 24-20.

But, Stratton/Liberty hung tough. A gutsy, tackle-breaking run by Pickard put the Knighted Eagles back in the lead.

Then, Sorensen’s fake field goal call gave Peetz a title win after a 15-year drought. Peetz last won the 6-man championship in 2002 and 1995.

“It feels good, I just don’t need to do it every 15 years, man,” Sorensen laughed. “Holy crap.”

  • Football roundup: Windsor clinches league title with OT win over Skyline

Windsor broke up a two-point conversion attempt in overtime to seal a wild 56-55 win over Skyline and wrap up the Northern League championship on Friday.

The fifth-ranked Wizards had led 49-33 with 5:47 remaining, but Skyline came storming back to tie the game at 49 following two touchdowns and two-point conversions.

Windsor scored first in overtime — quarterback Connor Apodaca faked a handoff up the middle and ran to an open end zone to his left — but No. 10 Skyline again responded. The Falcons’ Nathan McGregor hit Austin Robison on a play-action pass on fourth-down.

Skyline then went for two, its fourth such attempt of the game. This time the pass was broken up in the left side of the end zone. According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan, it was senior Bryce Kellum who had the big play.

The result was a Windsor win, and a conference championship. The Wizards are now 8-1 this season, and 4-0 in their league. Every other Northern team has at least two league losses.

Skyline is now 7-2, including 2-2 in the Northern.

“It was awesome,” Kellum told the paper of the win. “Just awesome.”

Windsor led 35-20 at halftime, a lead secured by a key interception from junior Tayt Gallatin in the end zone.

Noah Montague had two rushing scores for the Wizards, including a 91-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Salazar also rushed for two touchdowns, according to the Coloradoan’s Kevin Lytle.

Skyline’s star running back Jeremy Hollingsworth had two touchdowns. McGregor had four total touchdowns, including a pass to Jack Wathen with 15.7 seconds left in regulation that helped tie the game.

  • Football roundup: No. 5 Roosevelt gets a big win over No. 8 Berthoud in 3A

    (@Spartans_BHS/Twitter)

Roosevelt football beat Berthoud on Friday night in a key Class 3A matchup.

For starters, it was a top-10 win, with the No. 5 Roughriders topping the No. 8 Spartans. Second, it was a win in the Class 3A Tri-Valley League, which is probably the best league in the state regardless of classification. Third, Roosevelt is now 5-2.

But most importantly: It helped the Roughriders move up in the 3A RPI standings from No. 13 to No. 8.

Roosevelt rallied from down 12-7 to take a 15-12 lead at halftime, and led 22-12 after three quarters.

    2A: (6) Sterling 56, Fort Lupton 28

Sterling quarterback Bodie Hume threw six touchdowns in the first half of Sterling’s 56-28 win over Fort Lupton. That ties the state record.

Hume finished with seven touchdowns; he only played one series in the second half.

The six touchdowns in a half are now tied for the most in state history. Hume is the seventh player to do that. His seven touchdown passes are tied for the fifth-most in state history.

    4A: (10) Skyline 70, Greeley Central 44

Skyline junior Jeremy Hollingsworth rushed for six touchdowns and more than 350 yards in a wild win over Greeley Central. He now has scored 26 touchdowns this season.

The Falcons are 6-1 this season.

    3A: Fort Morgan 17, (6) Silver Creek 7

Fort Morgan not only pulled off the upset, but moved to 2-0 in the Northern League. Both conference wins followed a three-game losing streak.

“We changed it up this week,” Mustangs coach Harrison Chisum told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “We had a lot of competitions and a lot more fun in practice, and it kind of helped with our energy level.”

Donovan Moya had an interception return for a score to help Fort Morgan win on Friday.

“He’s a competitor, and that was a huge pick-six to start the second half,” Chisum said.

Both teams are now 4-3 this season.

    6-man: (1) Stratton/Liberty 63, (3) Otis 6

“The kids just blocked their hearts out,” he said. “The effort’s just been great.”

(Winslet Chen & Brandon Kamm/Belleview Christian)

Belleview Christian won its first football game since 2012 on Saturday.

  • Football roundup: Erie makes a statement with another top-10 win

    (Steven Higgins)

A week after beating sixth-ranked Silver Creek, Erie football has another top-10 feather in its cap.

On Friday night, the Tigers, now ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, beat No. 4 Berthoud 33-7.

“Playing in the Tri-Valley (League), it doesn’t get any easier,” coach Chad Cooper told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game. “I told our kids to enjoy this one tonight, but tomorrow morning we’re back to work and getting ready for Holy Family.

“It’s kind of similar to a playoff run where you can’t let down,” Cooper continued. “It’ll be good to kind of prepare us for the playoffs. You can’t have any let downs in the playoffs. It’ll be a great test for us.”

Erie’s Jacob Mansdorfer hit Alex Mathis with a touchdown pass just before the end of the first half to push the Tigers’ lead to 20-7.

Noah Roper rushed for two second-half touchdowns, and also recovered two fumbles on defense. He returned one of those for a touchdown. Roper had 165 yards rushing.

“Noah, obviously, is a talented kid. He kind of does it all for us,” Cooper said. “He runs extremely hard and is able to grind on people, too, with the style that we have on offense.”
