  • District baseball brackets released for first time under RPI system

Back in January, the Legislative Council approved the recommendation of the CHSAA baseball committee to fast track the use of RPI as the system to determine the playoff fields.

Wednesday saw the results of that vote for the first time as district brackets for Class 3A through 5A were released. Unlike the Wild Card system used previously, the RPI format takes into account the overall strength of schedule for each team and combines it with their win/loss record to create the field of 32 teams.

Pine Creek came away with the top overall seed in 5A, and will host this weekend. Other host schools are Regis Jesuit, Lakewood, Heritage, Rock Canyon, Grandview, ThunderRidge and Mullen.

Rock Canyon, which won last year’s 5A championship, is the No. 5 overall seed and will play Bear Creek in their first game. If they advance they’ll see the winner of Dakota Ridge and Chaparral.

Three of the final four teams left in last year’s playoff field made it back to the tournament with Grandview landing at No. 6, Chatfield at No. 26. District play will begin this weekend with the state tournament starting next week.

Mountain View leads the way in 4A, taking the top overall spot in the class. They’ll host their district where they will play Roosevelt. The winner of that game will meet the winner of Palisade and The Classical Academy.

The other host schools in 4A are Canon City, Valor Christian, Windsor, Pueblo West, Fort Morgan, Denver North and Delta.

Two-time defending state champion Green Mountain did not make it inside the top 32 teams and did not qualify for district play.

Last year’s runner-up, Lewis-Palmer, drew the No. 26 seed and will head to District 6 and play host Fort Morgan. The potential of a showdown with league rival Palmer Ridge is there as the Bears play Longmont in that same district. Lewis-Palmer swept the season series against the Bears this year.

Of last years final four teams in the tournament, only Lewis-Palmer and Ponderosa (No. 29) qualified for districts this year.

Defending 3A champion Eaton held strong as the No. 1 team in that class all season and is the No. 1 seed coming into districts. The Reds will face Olathe in their first district game with the winner of that game playing the winner of No. 16 Lutheran and No. 17 The Academy.

University, St, Mary’s, Lamar, Faith Christian, La Junta, Valley and Kent Denver are the other host teams in 3A.

All four of last year’s final four teams in the tournament qualified for districts this year. Eaton and University are the top two teams in the brackets, Brush comes in at No. 9 and will play No. 24 Buena Vista in District 2 at Kent Denver and Sterling lands at No. 21 and will play No. 12 Colorado Academy in District 4 at Faith Christian.

  • Baseball rankings: Silver Creek returns to No. 1 in 4A

For the third time this season, Silver Creek sits atop the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

The Raptors came away with two key wins last week, one against Northridge and one against Greeley Central. They’ll finish their regular with one game against Greeley Central and two against Mountain View this week.

Mountain View was the No. 1 team in last week’s poll and sits at No. 2 this week.

Denver North is the only new team in the poll, landing at No. 8.

Pine Creek holds on to their No. 1 spot in 5A. The Eagles will see action every day this week as they close out the regular season.

Ralston Valley (No. 6) and Rocky Mountain (No. 8) are the new additions to the 5A poll this week.

Eaton remains the unanimous No. 1 team in 3A.

La Junta jumped four spots this week to land at No. 6 ahead of the Tri-Peaks League crossover games this weekend.

Brush is back in the 3A poll, taking the No. 10 spot this week.

Paonia is still undefeated and as a result, still the No. 1 team in 2A.

County Line (McClave/Wiley) jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 3 and even snagged two first-place votes along the way.

Crowley County is the only new addition to the 2A poll as the Chargers land at No. 9.

Granada hung on to the No. 1 spot in 1A.

Gilpin County broke into that poll, taking the No. 10 spot this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

With some regular seasons already over, and others winding down, these will serve as the final rankings of the regular season in all classes. Postseason brackets will be released on CHSAANow.com when they become available.

  • Baseball rankings: Three new No. 1 teams take over

Three new No. 1 teams were crowned this week in the CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

Silver Creek now stands atop the Class 4A poll, Paonia takes over as the top 2A team and Holly comes at No. 1 in the 1A rankings.

With new teams breaking into every poll this week, the rankings have a much different look to them than they did when the last new set was released two weeks ago.

Silver Creek made the most impressive jump out of any other team, regardless of classification. Two weeks ago, the Raptors held the No. 7 position in 4A and after rattling off three wins in Arizona, the voters saw enough to boost their position.

Canon City, Pueblo East and Valor Christian also had solid outings since spring break and played their way in the rankings. Canon City lands at No. 3, Pueblo East comes in at No. 4 and Valor Christian takes over the No. 7 spot that Silver Creek held in the previous rankings.

Regis Jesuit remains the top team in 5A.

Ralston Valley gained ground in this week’s poll, jumping from No. 9 to No. 6.

Douglas County, ThunderRidge and Heritage join the 5A rankings at No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

Eaton may still be the top team in 3A, but it’s No. 2 Bayfield who suddenly getting attention from voters. The Wolverines completed a successful road trip to Colorado Springs where they held on to beat St. Mary’s before holding off Lamar and Manitou Springs in a double-header.

Kent Denver was the lone addition to the 3A poll at No. 9.

Paonia’s 8-0 start to the season was good enough for the Eagles to jump three spots and take over the No. 1 spot in 2A. They swept former No. 1 Resurrection Christian in a double-header on Saturday.

The Cougars fell to No. 5 as a result.

Rocky Ford (No. 6) and Limon (No. 10) joined the 2A rankings this week.

Holly made the two-spot jump after a 2-1 start to their season to become the new No. 1 team in 1A.

Granada, who was ranked No. 7 in the previous rankings, also made a significant jump this week as the Bobcats come in at No. 2.

Rocky Mountain Lutheran and Briggsdale are the two new teams to the 1A rankings, coming in at No. 7 and No. 8 respectively.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Denver North baseball gets seven runs in the fourth inning, beats Durango

    Denver North Durango baseball
    (Stephen Priest/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — Any lingering doubts about whether Denver North is the real deal in Class 4A should be extinguished.

The Vikings are an offensive juggernaut and validated that narrative Tuesday as it was the fourth consecutive game they’ve dropped double-digit runs on an opponent, beating Durango 13-2.

The No. 8-ranked Vikings (5-0 overall) are currently on a three-game run of beating teams via the mercy rule, and continued the streak even though the bats didn’t get off to a hot start.

Tuesday night offered up a unique set of circumstances as inclement weather led to a delay, while the game was also played across Speer Boulevard at the Regency Athletic Complex belonging to the Metropolitan State.

However, the Denver North players seemed to have no problem swapping a home game to play a neutral contest at the facility, which features a turf field which is more resilient to wet weather.

Prior to the third inning, the game seemingly crept along as neither team could keep command of their, pitches leading to full counts constantly. The game advanced to the bottom of the third with the advantage going to Durango (2-5) leading 2-1, putting the Vikings in an unfamiliar position.

“I just told the guys the game wasn’t even close to being over and they just have to respond when something negative happens and that there is a lot of game left,” Denver North coach Ernesto Marquez said. “They’ve been working hard all year, we’ve been working hard on the mental side of the game all offseason and it’s paying off.

The tide would ultimately change quicker than Colorado weather.

Behind the bat of senior Daniel Gurrola, who started things off with a double to right-center, Denver North rattled of five runs in the bottom of the third.

Gurrola went 3-for-4 on Tuesday, scoring once, but made sure to deflect credit for himself and heap it on his squad as a whole.

“My mentality tonight was just win, with my team,” Gurrola said. “I don’t really focus on my hits or my personal stats. I just want to help my team win and at the end of the day the ‘W’ is all that matters.”

Durango managed to slow down some of that offensive momentum from Denver North, but failed to answer back in the top of the fourth. And the slug-fest for the Vikings would continue in the bottom half.

They not only managed to bat through their batting order, but forced two pitching changes in the same inning as the Demons couldn’t find the strike zone. In addition, sloppy throws, numerous walks, and continuous hits to the outfield gaps did Durango a defensive disservice.

Denver North notched seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 13-2 lead going into the top of the fifth. The Vikings closed the game out after retiring the Demons in order.

When asked about the explosive offensive start to the year, coach Marquez had nothing but praise for his veteran squad.

“The guys are player-motivated and self-driven, they’re the hardest group I’ve ever coached,” Marquez said. “It’s to the point where I don’t have enough time to practice with them because they want to practice 24/7. It’s not uncommon that I see a guy hitting at the park by himself with a tee. It’s just the hard work that those guys have put in all offseason that had paid off.”

The Vikings will look to continue their winning streak as they take on Pueblo East on Thursday, while Durango will face Pueblo Central.

  • Baseball rankings: Eads new No. 1 in Class 1A poll

It’s still early in the 2016 baseball season, but there has already been some shakeup in the Class 1A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

Eads takes over the top spot in the state after a 1-0 start to their season. Former No. 1 Dove Creek, who has stumbled out of the gate fell to No. 2.

Cotopaxi and Manzanola played their way into the still young rankings, coming in at No. 6 and No. 9 respectively.

Nothing has changed at the top of the 5A rankings as Regis Jesuit and Cherry Creek remain the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in those rankings.

    Ralston Valley Chatfield baseball

Columbine is one of two newcomers in the poll as they land at No. 8 with Ralston Valley, the other newcomer, joining at No. 9.

The top of the 4A rankings has the same story as the 5A poll. D’Evelyn and Lewis-Palmer remain the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the class, with both teams undefeated on the year.

Though, the 4A rankings did see more turnover this week than any other class as Silver Creek (No. 7), Denver North (No. 8) and Air Academy (No. 9) all broke their way into this week’s poll.

And it was 3A who saw the least turnover of the week. Eaton still holds the No. 1 spot, but nine of last week’s 10 ranked teams all stayed in the poll this week, although a few did jump up or down in ranking.

Buena Vista is the lone newcomer in the poll, coming in at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Denver North has hired Mike Marquez as its football coach, the school announced Friday.

Marquez takes the job to coach the Vikings after spending the past seven seasons as the head football coach at Thornton High School. He also spent time as the head coach at Northglenn and as an assistant coach at Fairview.

“I am honored to be named the Head Coach of the Denver North Vikings,” Marquez said in a release. “I’m excited to once again work with North’s student athletes, helping to develop them into dedicated young people of character. I have extremely high expectations of my players, both on the field and in the classroom and I have no doubt these young men will rise to the challenge.

“My commitment to my players reaching high academic goals and preparing them for higher education will be pursued as passionately as our quest for a conference title.”

Marquez is currently employed at Metro State University in the Student Academic Access Center. He completed his undergraduate studies at Metro before getting his Masters in Education from Regis.

“Coach Marquez has the right combination of experience, leadership, vision and commitment to excellence to take on the unique opportunity of the position at Denver North High School,” Denver North assistant principal and athletic director Kevin Bendjy said in the release. “He has a proven track record of success with his student athletes and dedication to their development both as athletes and scholars and we welcome him to Denver North.”

Denver North’s Al Rodriguez resigned his position as the school’s head football coach on Wednesday.

Rodriguez, a 1989 graduate of the school, had been the head coach since 2011. His teams were 13-35 in five seasons, including 3-6 in 2015.

The school announced the change in a press release.

“I believe that this decision is in the best interest for my family and the North High football family,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “The Viking community is truly a family and I’m extremely thankful for all of the great people I’ve been fortunate to work with over the years. The future is bright for the North Vikings on and off the field.”

Prior to becoming head coach at Denver North, Rodriguez was the program’s wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator.

“We truly appreciate all of coach Rodriguez’s efforts with the football program over the past five years in his position as head coach,” North athletic director Kevin Bendjy said in a statement. “He’s been a tremendous asset and role model for our scholar athletes and model representative of Denver North High School in the community.”
